REMINDER: ALL BIDS FOR NATIONAL EVENTS FOR 2006 ARE DUE BY JULY 31, 2005 TO DAVID LEE, ROAR COMPETITION DIRECTOR [email protected]. Recently Approved Motors: The following Brushless Modified Teardown is approved: ● Modified Novak Novak Brushless, 1050 Teardown, bare Al can ends, purple band 3.28.2005 Recently Approved Battery: At this time the following battery is approved effective January 1, 2005: ● GP Epic Monster Metal Shrink Description: Black center band with edges of black and white diagonal stripes. Rule Changes CARPET OVAL NATIONALS (ONLY) The following deviations that came as requests from the Oval Rules Committee and were approved by majority votes of the ExCom. Brushless and Open Modified: We are modifying the position of brushless in open modified for the 2005 Oval Nationals only. Brushless will be run as a separate class and will not be included in open modified for oval racing. Body trimming: A deviation has been approved to resolve a conflict in the rule book for oval bodies. The body rule (6.1.15) requires the body to be cut at the molded trim line and a minimum body height as shown on rule 8.9.8. We typically have enforced the ride height as the trim line would usually make the body stick way up in the air. For the 2005 Oval Nationals the minimum ride height “C” will be the governing dimension. 1/12 scale NASCAR bodies: A deviation request was approved for 1/12 scale NASCAR bodies. The approved 1/12 scale NASCAR bodies for oval are not available (Bolink is out of business and Proline/Protoform 1/12 NASCAR bodies will not be made anymore). Because of this, the 1/12 scale class will be allowed to run what ever 1/12 scale body they can find to run. Supplies are very limited at best. The deviation request is to not require the use of an approved 1/12 scale oval body due to availability concerns of the effected drivers. Recently Approved Bodies The following bodies are approved for competition: ● ● 1/10 Supertruck McAllister Chev Silverado 215—03.26.08 1/10 Nextel Cup McAllister ’05 Dodge Charger 216—03.26.08 InsiDe this issue: Region 1 .............................................. pg 4 Region 2 ............................................. pg 5 Region 3 .............................................. pg 6 Region 4 .............................................. pg 7 Region 5 .............................................. pg 8 Regions 6, 7 & 8 .................................. pg 9 Regions 9 & 10 ....................................pg 10 Region 11 ........................................... pg 11 Region 12 ........................................... pg 12 Regions 14 & Canada ........................ pg 16 2005 Fuel Off-Road Nationals .............pg 13 ROAR Race Flyers ....................pgs 14 & 15 Interested in becoming a ROAR MEMEBER or AFFILIATED CLUB? I generally repeat some of the information annually, including a description of how the ROAR insurance program works and what a great benefit it is to ROAR members. How ROAR Insurance Works The ROAR insurance program is one of the most valuable aspects of ROAR membership. The insurance policies are complex but I would like to try to summarize the key parts of the insurance program in layman’s terms, particularly for the new members, as part of my annual column on this subject. ROAR members are covered by two ROAR insurance policies, liability and bodily injury, while participating in a ROAR sanctioned race or a practice for such a race. Liability: This policy protects members from claims resulting from damage caused by their R/C car to spectators and others. The insurance company has the right and duty to defend the insured (member) against any suit seeking damages because of bodily injury or property damage, and pay those sums the insured becomes legally obligated to pay up to the $ 1 Million policy limit. This applies to ROAR sanctioned races and practices and basically applies to accidents directly related to the operation of an R/C car. Damage caused by a wind blown pit umbrella or shade tent isn’t covered. Often that kind of coverage is provided by your homeowners policy. In my opinion, the greatest value here is the protection from lawyers and lawsuits. (Insurance company has the duty to defend...). You’ve got to have a real bummer of an accident to cause $1 Million in damage. In terms of cost, this liability coverage currently represents about $4.80 of your annual membership fee. The liability cost per member has increased compared to a few years ago, primarily because the insurance industry is experiencing more lawsuits and larger damage awards for liability claims in general. Bodily Injury: I like to think of this as a “no-fault” injury policy because it pays medical expenses if you hurt yourself in a ROAR sanctioned race (trip over your own feet turn-marshalling) up to $10,000. Most member’s accidents are minor and fall within the current $200 deductible for each claim, however, a broken leg with resulting hospital and doctor bills adds up real fast with today’s high medical costs. In terms of cost, the bodily injury coverage currently represents $1.40 of your annual membership fee. During the last few years, the insurance company has paid claims including one for nearly $6000 to cover medical costs for a member’s broken arm. It also rejected one claim for nearly $1000 identified by the Emergency Room physician as a skateboarding injury, which obviously was not RC related. One aspect of both policies of insurance is that they are secondary to any coverage you may have that is already obligated to pay the covered expenses. In other words, you would not be able to receive payment twice for the same expense. A ROAR sanctioned race is one run by a ROAR Club or Track with an approved sanction from ROAR. Clubs are automatically issued a certificate of insurance naming them as an additional insured under the member policy. If they use someone else’s property for a race, the insurance company will add that party, (landlord, city park, shopping center) as an additional insured for a nominal fee (currently $67.11 including insurance tax). These additional insured parties have the same coverage as the member. Again, remember the main value here is the insurance company’s “duty to defend” and the lawyers tendency to sue anyone even remotely connected with the event looking for deep pockets. The key element to all of this, particularly for the Clubs, is that the insurance coverage is related to the individual member insurance, and if the person having an accident is not a ROAR member officers 2 President: Rick Wilson 535 Crater Camp Dr., Monte Nido, CA 91302 Phone: 818.591.7531; [email protected] Track Director: Kenny Bergschultz 2830 South 12th St., Sheboygan, WI 53081 Phone: 920.457.5266; [email protected] Vice President: Mike Queller 9212 Gallant Fox, Austin, TX 78737 Phone: 512.326.8481; [email protected] Technical Director: Bob Ingersoll 2921 Harlee Dr., Farmers Branch, TX 75234-5007 Phone: 972.620.0407; [email protected] Secretary / Treasurer: Randy Holst 9400 NE 121st St., Kirkland, WA 98034 Phone: 425.373.4875; [email protected] Competition Director: David Lee 1280 Timber Creek Ln., Greenwood, IN 46142 Phone: 317.859.0596; [email protected] Promotions Director: Dawn Sanchez 6207 W. Phone: 949.494.0515 [email protected] the insurance company won’t know him. The track’s coverage depends upon having all racers be ROAR members. Remember to let the race director or track owner know of any accident, and write down his name and number, so the insurance company can verify the details of any claim submitted. The $6.20 of your membership fee devoted to the insurance program is an excellent value particularly in this day and age when there are so many lawsuits. We want to make sure that all racers at our events are protected by the insurance coverage, so make sure that you are participating in a ROAR sanctioned race run by a ROAR Club (listed here in Rev-Up under your Region report), and that everyone participating in your club events is a ROAR member. It’s cheap insurance. n Competition Director David Lee One of my duties is to solicit the bids for level 4 events for the coming year. ROAR has offered championships in all racing classes since it’s early days. Now is the time for clubs, commercial tracks and racing facilities to consider hosting one of these championship events for 2006. The ROAR process is for an interested host to construct and submit a bid to me for the championship they wish to hold. The bid will then be sent to the class committees overseeing each racing discipline for endorsement of the best bid or location for the event. The bids and the endorsements will then come under review of the Executive Committee for final determination of the successful bids for 2006. Bids shall follow the format identified by the template on the ROAR internet site. The template is located in the Nationals section. It includes topics such as description of the racing facilities, proposed date of the event, classes offered, identification of race officials and their qualifications and others relevant to the success of the proposed event. Three national championship events have been completed at the date this article is written. Two of the events have been conducted without a hitch, while one of the events had numerous issues even though there were great racing and worthy champions. ROAR has learned that the staff conducting the event is very important to the success attained. Many times it is easy to overcome deficiencies in the staff, but every once in a while, that is impossible. There have been suggestions that ROAR establish a permanent team of officials to staff these events. I agree this is a solution that will reduce the possibility the event will have uncorrectable problems. This is an important topic the Executive Committee will discuss relating to future level 4 events. One of the negatives for a move like this is the cost to retain and travel a competent team of officials. Part of the discussion will be to compare those costs against the value they represent. I personally hope those costs do not out weigh ROAR’s interest to high value events. n Promotions Director Current Affiliates continued: Dawn Sanchez Greetings ROAR members! This month I wanted to remind all track affiliates that we are attempting to advertise in the national magazines all the sanctioned races but, it takes getting the information to do it! I hear all the time, what does ROAR do for me.. well, c’mon guys....send me the date, track, contact info, type of racing information of all your sanctioned events and we’ll get them advertised! Also, we are able to get the magazines to print the national event entry forms but remember, three months ahead of time is when we have to have them to make on time printing! ROAR banners have been mailed out to the national venues and I recently received one banner for each region director to take to events and races they attend to do some promotions! I will be mailing those out very soon. (sorry I haven’t done that already!) Please, contact me at [email protected] should you have any promotional ideas or want to step up and do some good with ROAR. Class committees are always looking for participants and personally, I’ll take whatever help I can get! n Ashford Hobby PO Box 840, Boalsburg PA 16827 USA [email protected]; www.ashfordhobby.com Panther Products, Inc. 1100 Marlborough Ave., Riverside CA 92507 USA [email protected]; www.panther-rc.com Associated Electrics 3585 Cadillac Ave., Costa Mesa CA 92626 USA [email protected]; www.rc10.com Parma International, Inc. 13927 Progress Pkwy, N. Writing this in May, we have seen a lot of rain washing out the early portions of the outdoor season. Many of the ‘kick off’ kind of races have been washed out. Hobby Chamber hosted the 2005 Carpet Onroad Nationals back in March. What an interesting event—interesting is probably an understatement. Lots have been said about how poorly this event was executed. Most of which is true. It is easy to point fingers at ROAR and/or Hobby Chamber for the event, which many did. I was there, I saw. I was involved in some of the planning. I know some of the inside issues. Many situations were handled poorly all around, leading up to, during and after the event. On September 1, 2005 I will review all bids received for the sanctioned events of 2006. If you would like to host sanctioned events in 2006 please submit a sanctioning form to me. This will be a first come first serve. Tracks submitting by September 1st will have preference. RC Madness will host the ROAR Modified Off-road Nationals July 21-24. Goto Rc Madness’ web site for the entry form and the information. Madness has been working hard to cover all angles of this event to ensure that is will be a success. That’s because a few members are on the Region 2 e-mail distribution list and have already received this article via e-mail. If you’d like to be added to distribution list, please forward your e-mail address to [email protected]. The planning of regional events for the year 2005 has been slow. To better administer the region, I’ve asked Mark Somerville who was instrumental in coordinating the 2004 Fuel Off-Road Points Series to assist as the Off-Road Regional Director. Unfortunately, I’ve been unable to coordinate and get a schedule set for the Region 2 Regional off-road electric and Fuel Championships. Homer Allman has expressed and interest in hosting the electric off-road, date to be determined and I’m still waiting to hear from Tony West, the new operator of Pasadena raceway, Homer and Mark about a fuel off-road points series. I’m sure we will have something set soon which will be highly advertised on all the Internet forums. In an earlier press release, I expressed my goal for 2005 and this upcoming 2-year term would be a continuation of what I’ve already started. To improve ROAR’s presence and ensure there exists a fair and consistent level of racing at all Regional, State Championships and High Profile events throughout our Region. Lets dissect this goal. I will continue to enforce the concept of creating a fair and consistent level of racing throughout our region. I’m passionate about this and feel it will lead to a greater level of competitive racing throughout our region. This quality of competitiveness was evident at the On-Road Carpet Regionals hosted by The Track this past April. I will however not waste anymore of my time defending the actions of ROAR in what I believe are the organizations weaknesses. Just after the on-road carpet nationals, I submitted my thoughts to the executive committee and everyone involved with ROAR as guidance to improve ROAR’s presence at future national and regional level events. With the exception of a few regional directors voicing support for my program, I’ve not heard a word from any of the decision makers at ROAR. I’m very disappointed. Race Report: During the time since my last Rev-Up release, The Track in Gaithersburg, MD hosted the 2005 On-Road Regional. Just like the 2005 MidAtlantic Carpet Clash, the turnout for this event drew the top on-road drivers from throughout the region. As I expected the race program as support was exceptional. Special thanks Perry Caswell, race director and to Glenn Peters and Scott Buller for assisting me in tech throughout the event. FYI, Mimi has expressed an interest in hosting the 2006 Carpet Nationals, which I will campaign ROAR. Of special note, the level of racing displayed during this event far exceeded that which I witnessed during the carpet nationals. During the 1/12th Stock A-Main the difference between 1st and 3rd, Heimbert Olmos, Perry Caswell and Heon Ryou overall was less than 8 seconds, with Perry finishing just 2 seconds behind Heimbert. Even the 1/12th B-Main proved to be a competitive battle between Charles Leinbach and Robert Paoge. In Stock Sedan, Dan Hartman and Chris Vogan battled it out finishing 1st and 2nd respectively, separated by less than 2 seconds. In 19T Sedan A-Main, Craig Xavier was in a class by himself, finishing almost a lap on 2nd place Billy Spence. The battle during this race was for 2nd place as 2nd through 6th all finished with 24 laps and within 6 seconds of each other. For me the race was great, even though I decided not to race and focused on overseeing tech. This also allowed me the time to sit back and enjoy the main events. I’m also please to report that we had no instances of any technical violations. The results of the race are as follows: 1/12 Stock A-Main: Heimbert Olmos, Perry Caswell, Heon Ryou, (TQ) Vincent Jackson, Dave Rasnake, Keith Wright. 1/12 Stock B-Main: Charles Leinbach, Robert Poage, Rod Mitchell, Stephene Ludlum, Gareret Hufffman, Steve Walter. I’ve only gotten one report on the Electric On-road series this time. The new Off-road director had a race this past weekend and it will not be possible for a report at this time. The Nitro On-road regional was rained out I believe and I have not heard anything yet. However I’ll see the nitro director this coming weekend. Hopefully on the next Rev-up I’ll have many articles and updates on the different series racing. I do know many racers here in Florida are gearing up for the On-road Electric and Nitro Open Nationals coming here in October and November. There will also be a nationals warm up (electric) in September so check Speedline hobbies website for current information. The FSEARA series is going to be celebrating our 25th anniversary next month in Daytona at Strickland R/C track. They will be giving several special awards to the “New Hall of Fame.” I know I’ll be one of them—I’ve been racing in the series of 24 years. I can say it’s been a real interesting time. I’ve meant so many people, some real characters thru the years. Also made some great friends and have enjoyed traveling around the state. Although it’s an old saying any weekend racing is better than working. Now days the racing weekends are just the Broward County R/C Race Club 13310 Mustang Trail, Sunshine Ranches FL 33330 USA Site: Mills Pond Pk, Ft. This will soon change as a new permanent track will be build about 3 miles from my house (Sunbeam R/C Raceway). They will have both an On-road track and an Off-Road track. Also new in the state is what was formerly known as Full Throttle Speedway is now Kissimmee R/C Raceway. The new partners Rafael Angula and Kevin Hutchinson will be fixing up the place and Hosting the ROAR Nitro On-Road Nationals on November 3rd-6th. I’m sure with these new owners and what they have planned for the place everyone will see a big impovement. I’m looking forward to racing my electric cars and watching the planes fly around. Oh yes and a few golfers having a good round or two. Searching the internet today I’ve got some racing dates for the Ft. Myers R/C Club: June 4-5, July 16-17, August 13-14. Saturdays practice all day from 9:30 to 3:30pm. Sunday practice 9:00am-10:30 with two rounds of qualifying and the mains. Also The Sunshine Bandits of Central Florida have released their club race schedule: August 27 28, September 10-11, October 15-16, November 12-13, January 28-29, March 18-19 and April 15-16 Trophy Dash. The Forgass Series for 2004-2005 is finished. This year the series has grown and here are the top three in each of the classes. 1/8—Chuck Moon (Series Director), Aston Brinson, Ryan Rhodes. 1/10 Outlaw—Collin Ashley, Jim Rice, Julian Hope. 200mm—Scotty Gray, Maxy Velazco, DJ Apolaro. While searching the web I also found out that the 2006 Winter Nats are being planned for February 12-18. I usually get the paperwork in the summer so we see if these dates are correct. Although I have no race results to report, I can report that R/C racing on a local level has been very active. Our weather, which has been milder than normal, has let all of our region’s tracks continue to be very active. Meridian R/C Speedway has continued to lead our region with the largest group of racers interested in dirt oval racing. While they race all classes, nitro trucks still seem to be very popular. I have been told that a new off road track is under construction. When it is completed I will want to check it out. Meridian R/C Speedway races every Friday evening. Red Stick R/C Raceway is the only indoor racing facility in our region. The Pino family just celebrated 5 years in business and son Todd’s birthday with a special weekend race. They have a paved banked oval track as well as an off road track. These folks are very eager to become known as a fun place to visit. It is very nice to have another paved oval in our region. Small Cars Unlimited is still going strong and racing every Saturday. With 2 off road tracks, a dirt oval track, an asphalt on road track, and a concrete high banked tri-oval track, Small Cars can run any ROAR class from 1/18 scale up to 1/5 scale. I write this article in early May, long after the busy winter racing season is over and right before the summer season officially begins. I thought it would be a good time to reflect on what I’ve learned since taking over as region 8 director. For starters, this job is not easy. One of the largest problems we face, especially in winter, is scheduling. Unfortunately, every track in the Midwest schedules its trophy races in the span of about two months, and there are some races that have been going on for years on the same dates. The January off road race in Chillicothe is just one example. Picking the dates for the carpet on road and oval regionals was especially tough this year, because February and March are jam-packed. I tried to schedule the races far enough away from everyone else’s races to at least give region 8 roar members the opportunity to go to as many of those races as they could. In the future I hope to avoid any more problems by doing what I’ve done this year with the electric off road regionals. Because the summer time is such a ruckus of activity with annual races, the electric off road regionals are taking place in October on what is normally the fall race in Chillicothe. Scheduling regionals in place of the host track’s well known and attended event will hopefully keep conflicts to a minimum, and I hope to do more of the same in the future. The other thing I learned is that Oval racing is not only tough, but also alive and kicking in our region. The carpet oval regionals took place March 4-6 at the Hobbytown Hobbyplex is Omaha, Nebraska, and oh man, was it a great race. Oval racing is fun to watch and even more fun to announce. A majority of the time these guys are less than an inch from each other bumpers and some of the passes I saw were downright pretty. As it was with the on road regionals, the oval regionals attracted racers from outside the region. There was a great group of guys from Colorado, that were extremely fast, as well as a few guys from Region 5 including Snowbirds winner Sonny Brown. There were 99 entries total, another success in 2005. Practice started early on Friday; with the groove left by the on road regionals the previous week disappearing in a matter of hours, and the oval groove got blacker than I’d ever seen. If you got out of that groove you were toast. Three rounds of qualifying took place Saturday, and it was super close, especially in 4-cell stock. A resort was done after two rounds, and there was very little movement in the top ten of each class, until the last chance qualifier on Sunday. Oval racing is great because you only need one good run to get in the show. And there were several drivers that got in the main on the last day by bearing down and getting it done. Single A-mains were run in the afternoon on Sunday, and what a set of races it was. In 4-cell stock, Mike Kelm TQ’d all four rounds of qualifying and stayed out in front the whole main while tight clean racing took place behind him. 4-cell 19t was a surprise as Brittany Murdock showed up on Sunday, unable to make qualifying on Saturday, qualified 2nd and then drove to the lead in the main to take the win. Jeff Goodier proved that nothing is set in stone when he took the win in 19t 12th scale. TQ Sonny Brown got into trouble early and never recovered. 2005 National brushless class winner Phil Beardshear hinted at his later success by taking the regional brushless championship after he TQ’d all four rounds and drove away in the main. Danny Bartholemew continued his great success by winning the coveted 4-cell mod class in a close race with Sonny Brown and Rob Murdock. Mike Lafferty waded through absolute terror in the Hobbyplex’s very own Plexcup class. TQ Phil Beardshear had a target on his rear bumper and Craig Maline found it…and then found it again. Plexcup is a stock class with cost in mind, only allowing spec tires and a spoiler on the body instead of a wing. It was carnage, but fun carnage… 9 rEGIONAL rEPOrTS Full results can be found at www.hobbyplexraceway.com. E verything went as planned without a single major problem. Drivers started showing up on Sunday (3 days before they were allowed on the track), and were happy to just look around. Tuesday we ran four rounds of 10-minute heats, with about 50% of the racers having already shown up. Wednesday we got in 3 rounds of 10-minute heats, more racers now. Thursday started a little late with 100% of racers on sight we only got in 2 rounds of 5-minute heats (some were a little bummed), but was fair for all there. Thursday night at the banquet with about 85% in attendance we served up some of the best fajitas in South Texas, with beans, rice and flour tortillas. Also for entertainment we had one of the leading Mariachi Bands in the US playing for our enjoyment (they were a little loud at times). Speakers at the banquet included Gabriel Gonzalez (City Manager), Delia Martinez (Chamber of Commerce), Jeff Lyssy (Parks Department), Jerry Lewis (President of GEARS Club), Jason Ashton and Jared Tebo. And we will never forget the courageous Carlton Eppes for taking on the duty of M.C. and putting up with all of us for 5 days! Thursday practice all the guys you would expect to be fast, were fast. But when it came to qualifying that was another story. The track had some really rough sections that acted as equalizers, and gave some of the drivers a better shot at making a higher main. Also it put a lot of the better drivers in lower mains, for example Jeremy Kortz qualified 47th in 1/8 bumped all the way to the A-Main and finished 8th at the end of the day. Man that’s what I call driving the wheels off a Buggy. MT A-Main was no exception to the rest of the week. Jason Ashton looked like the man to beat all week, but electrical gremlins jumped on his truck for the Main. And ROAR crowned its first MT Champion, Jay Halsey (seems to be first to do everything). Dean Sexton coming in second 2 laps back, and Kris Moore in third 3 laps back of Dean. Jason not even finishing out the full 45 minutes (38.57) still pulled out a sixth place finish. Jason was on rails for most of the race and looked unbeatable. Gas Truck A-Main was as most expected from the beginning to finish. Jared Tebo got the whole shot on the grid, and didn’t look back for the next 15 laps, during pit stops Ryan Cavalieri got the lead and held on till lap 40 when he relinquished the lead back to Jared. Three laps later Ryan had some major problems and was in the pits for several minutes dropping him back to 13th on the field. Jared kept on trucking for the next 67 laps to pull of another big win for AE. Pulling off the other podium spots were two other AE pilots Taylor James in second and Marty Korn in third. The track defiantly took its toll on some of the driver’s rides with only ten of the fourteen finishing the full one hour main, and most several laps down. 1/8th Buggy WOW!!! Best finish in years!! With most of the race being a total blurr we will take it to the finish. Carlton calling the race with less than a minute to go with Mark Pavidis in first and Ryan Cavalieri in second, time running down quick as both drivers were coming to the table top, Mark took the safe jump as Ryan took the jump full wood. Mark landing and going through the land mine turn (named by Carlton) Ryan hit the table top and landed just inches in front of Mark. Down the short shoot and to the finish line both cars were wheel-to-wheel, tangled up and crashed (beating the horn). Marks car ended up on its lid (right in front of a turn marshal) Ryan landed on his wheels and completed his last lap just 3 seconds ahead of Mark. Jared Tebo crossed the line in third 2 laps down from the leaders. Believe me if that next to last lap would have been the finish, we would still be looking at the tape trying to determine who won this one! Thanks to all who made this race happen!
