I’m about to walk you through the little known mental architectures and core beliefs that people ranging from visionary entrepreneur and Tesla creator Elon Musk, basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal, billionaire financer Sir John Templeton, media titan Oprah Winfrey, and pop culture icon Kanye West to the great geniuses of history like William Shakespeare, Leonardo da Vinci, and Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius ran through their brains on a daily basis to generate the epic results that these rare-air producers released to the world. Along the way, you’ll be suddenly exposing your conscious mind to transformational ideas that will change the way you think, your unconscious mind to insight that will influence the way you behave and your spirit to content that will change the way you feel about your ability to make the highest version of your bravest visions come to life elegantly and swiftly. I want to underline that for you, 110 times between the time they wake up and the time they go to sleep. I guess what I’m suggesting to you is an addiction to distraction is the death of your creative production. There are so many people in the world today suffering from what I call ‘Broken focus syndrome’. I know you’re busy, but my promise to you is if you’ll make the time to protect your focus from distractions and commit to watching this video that I’ve crafted for you with vast devotion and passion for your success, all the way to the very end, three things will happen to you by the time this video is over. Key principle, ideation without execution is mere delusion. Okay. In case you don’t know me, please allow me to take a few minutes just to share my backstory. I come from humble beginnings, very humble beginnings. No privilege background, no special talents, zero exceptional resources. I’ve been very candidly to the mountaintop of success, and I’ve walked through the darkness of the valley of defeat, but life lacks color and richness and depth without a taste of both. © 2015 THE TITAN ACADEMY GLOBAL AG 4 THE 7 UNWRITTEN LAWS ONLY GAME-CHANGERS KNOW I grew up in a small town of about 2,000 people and I’d never really fit in or I’ve had that feeling I’ve never really fit in. I’m an introvert by nature like a lot of creative people, and I’ve spent a lot of time living in my mind. I once heard the author of ‘The Life Of Pi’ say, “He lives a life in the mind.” A lot of people told me maybe just like people told you, I wouldn’t amount very much, that I didn’t have what it takes, that I’d never make the cut. Maya Angelou once said it so well. She said, “People may forget what you say. People may forget what you do, but no one will ever forget how you make them feel.” In grade five, when I was ten years old, an angel showed up when I least expected it. Isn’t life like that? Her name was Cora Greenaway. She had the gift of being able to shine a light on the best in people, and she shined that light on me. Cora Greenaway was my history teacher. She taught me to believe in me. To this day, I still remember how she made me feel bigger, stronger, and braver in her presence. Fast forward to university, and I decided to become a lawyer. Not because it spoke to my heart, not because it was right for me, but because the people around me kept on suggesting that being a lawyer was the fast track to success and fitting in, and so I went to law school. Then, I did a master’s degree of law. Then, I became what most people said was a tremendous success. Only one problem. I wake up in the morning, and I’d look in the mirror every single day, and I didn’t like the person who is looking back at me. I mean, what’s the point of being a success in the world but an empty man or empty woman within yourself? Another key principle. When the pain of your stagnation grows larger than the fear of your transformation, then your life begins to explode into success. I knew it was time to change my thinking. I knew it was time to change my feelings. I knew it was time to change my fundamental ways of being, and I started off on my big adventure just like I hope today will be the beginning of you starting off on your big adventure into your best life. I’d work as a litigator by day, but late into the night and very early in the mornings, I’d be deep into studying “What made the great human beings who have graced our planet before us so great? How do those who lead lives of great creativity and courage and conviction and compassion do it while so many of us die at 30 and are buried at 90? How do a small percentage of humans get more done in a few years than most achieved in an entire lifetime? Why do some get crushed by failure and pain and tragedy, and actually that’s most of us, 5 ROBIN SHARMA while some strong souls somehow find it within them to use that pain and adversity and heartbreak to their advantage?” I read hundreds of books, attended seminar after seminar, worked with coaches and elders, business titans, and basically became outright obsessed. An obsession is only an obsession if it’s a bad obsession, so I became obsessed with human capacity and capability, and the road to human nature and what makes the great ones the great ones. Along the journey, I transformed personally. You cannot help but be exposed to a great idea with somehow your mind not fundamentally being different by that exposure. Along this journey, I transformed. You can’t expose your mind to a new idea with somehow your mind, your self-identity, your subconscious mind also being transformed by the exposure to great ideas, which is why this video, why education, why being around people who are thinking bigger than you, playing bigger than you is so fundamentally important to you becoming a game-changer. I opened up a whole new universe within my thinking. I saw the world in just fundamentally different terms. The way I felt when I woke up every morning was vastly better. I had this inexplicable joy growing within me. I felt an internal power I hadn’t known. I got more done in a week by what I learned and what I’m going to share with you throughout this video right to the end than most people get done in a year. The way I related to people was different. My whole self-concept began to change. As I started listening to myself versus the chattering voices of the naysayers around me, a silent whisper from within me suggested “Write a book. Share your learnings. Share your transformation with other people”, and I was a lawyer, never a writer. When your “Mighty Why” is big enough, the hows of how to do it line up pretty beautifully, and the universe always has a way of supporting you when you come from the integrity of your truth and the passion of your authentic ambition. I started to write often at three in the morning. I’m not sure where all the energy came from. I’m not sure where all the drive came from. I’d be a lawyer in the day, and then get back to this book I wanted to write in the night. I wrote for many months, and I’ve got to share with you, the world around me ridiculed me. They mocked my dream, so I started to write often at three in the morning. I’m still not really sure where all the energy and drive came from. I’d be a lawyer in the day, and then I get back to my book at night. They called me crazy, just like they’re going to call you crazy as you start to apply what I’m teaching you and unleash it in the world. They called me crazy for thinking anyone would read my book. Criticism is the price brave repays to get its best work done, and I was relentless. I love that word, ‘Relentless’. I called the book, ‘The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari’. I self-published it in a 24-hour coffee shop. My mom was my editor, and my first printing was very, very small. My first seminar, 23 people attended. Twenty-one of those people were my own family members. I mean, this all started from very, very humble beginnings. Fast forward to where I am now, and I say this with the utmost of humility, but I want you to know what happens when you start to apply the ideas I’m going to be teaching you throughout this video and in the two videos that will follow. My books have sold over 10 million copies in 76 nations. I’ve been blessed across the planet many, many times speaking at events by many of the best known companies in the world including Nike and FedEx, General Electric, Oracle, Starbucks, IBM, Microsoft. Once you do those things, you will get through these results. This is not a quick fix. I know you’re not a quick fix person. Of course, no idea works unless you do the work. You can’t be a world class athlete until you hit the gym. You can’t be a world class chess champion unless you learn and practice. You can’t be a world class mother or entrepreneur unless you do the work, stay with the practice, put in the training, find the right people, learn the right lessons, and then apply them. When you do on a daily 7 ROBIN SHARMA basis, you’ll see daily progress. I also want to tell you, I am a work in progress just like you as well. Like every other human being, I make mistakes on a constant basis. If you’re not making mistakes regularly, you’re playing too small. I have experienced great victories as I’ve shared with you hopefully with tremendous humility, but I’ve also endured crushing defeats, although I’ve trained my brain to see those as platforms of growth and progress and wisdom-building opportunities. Because I’ve dreamed so big and pushed so hard, I’ve also fallen very hard, and I’ve got the scars to show it. I think you’re the same. Life is meant to be lived out loud and played in the arena. I still love and adore the quote of Teddy Roosevelt that has got me through a lot of my painful times. “It’s not the critic who counts, not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who valiantly strives, who errs, who comes up short again and again because there is no effort without error and shortcoming, but who does actually strive to do the deeds, who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions, who spends himself in a worthy cause, who at best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly so that his place shall never be with those cold, timid souls who neither know victory, nor defeat.” Okay. A few final important suggestions before I walk you through the seven laws that only game-changers know. Please don’t fall into the thinking trap that you don’t have what it takes to become amazing at what you do and one of the most successful people that you know and a game-changer, a true game-changer that inspires all witnesses. It’s a total myth destroyed by researchers like Anders Ericsson, the preeminent researcher in the field of great performance, scientists like Roy Baumeister, and positive psychology pioneers like Martin Seligman, and thinkers like Howard Gardner who’s done some amazing work on multiple intelligences and what true intelligence really means. The myth that they’ve really debunked is that great skill comes from special talents that you need to be born with, and a privileged childhood that you need to blessed with and lucky breaks. That’s just nonsense being debunked by great science. As you’re about to learn the best of the best that you admire, that we all admire and celebrate, we’re no smarter, no gifted, no richer, no genetically inclined more than the person next door to you and you yourself. They just did different things, and they learned different concepts. © 2015 THE TITAN ACADEMY GLOBAL AG 8 THE 7 UNWRITTEN LAWS ONLY GAME-CHANGERS KNOW When you start learning what they know and doing what they do consistently, you’re going to get the results that they get. As we go through the rest of this video, please, please, please don’t let the voice of your lowest self and the chatter of your biggest fears tell you to stop the video, or that the ideas you’ll soon learn won’t work for you, or that you’re too busy to learn whatever I’m teaching, or whatever excuses your insecurities will start to try to sell you as you leave the safe harbor of your known, and go out into the brightest possibilities of the rest of your life. I guess I want you to remember this powerful thought. “Your fears are not real. Your fears are just an emotion. They’re neither good, nor bad. They just are.” It’s human psychology for your fears to start screaming when you have the opportunity to leave this circle of security and grow into more of your power and realize more of your potential. You’re smart and committed to becoming your absolute best. Don’t give up. Your life is just too important to give it over to your loudest excuses. Then, also, and this is the last thing to keep in mind, please watch out for your self-sabotaging patterns that are going to come up when you start to hear these new ideas. They are new ideas, and they’re very fresh, and many of them you’ve never heard before. The patterns that will self-sabotage you sound like this. “I’ve heard all of this before”, or “I don’t agree with what this bald man in the black shirt is teaching me, so it’s wrong”, or “That might be fine for Robin and the billionaires that he coaches privately or those who show up The Titan Summit, but I’m just an ordinary person, so what he’s sharing is not practical for me.” Everything I’m sharing with you is perfectly practical for you and it will work if you do the work and you open up your mind to what I’m sharing with you. Please, please, don’t shoot the messenger as an escape route for the changes the best part of you knows you need to make. You’re watching this for a reason because you’re ready to transform. What you’re about to learn will transform you as you apply it. What you’re about to learn in the next two training videos I’m going to share with you will transform you because they’ve transformed millions of the people I’ve been blessed to work with over the 20 years of devotion I’ve been in this field of leadership epic performance, helping ordinary people scale their internal brilliance to world class, but the go is a sneaky beast. It’s brilliant. I mean, the fears within are brilliant. They’re vicious. They know that as you rise to your brilliance, it’s going to die. Your fear is going to crumble, and 9 ROBIN SHARMA it’s going to lose its hold over you. This self-saboteur that lies deep in the murky waters of your unconscious self where the real work is to be done will start to come up as you start to transform and learn, and all these limiting messages that if you’re not careful and really awake, you’ll actually believe they’re true. Your excuses and your self-sabotaging mental patterns and your false beliefs are just the lies your fears are trying to sell you. Trust me. Today is the day to stop listening to them and get busy making outrageous success happen. ‘The Seven Unwritten Laws that Only Game-Changers Know’ is a framework for uncommon performance, rewiring your mindset to win in both excellent and miserable conditions. Hey. We’re all human here. Right? We all go through the ups and the downs, and it’s really all about leading a life that truly does make history. You can do this. You’re meant to experience this. Today is your day. Now is your time, so let’s get right into these laws. Okay. Fasten your seat belts. Here we go. Game-Changer Law number one: “A mighty vision releases massive talent.” As a child, you had a natural sparkle in your eye. You never want to lose that sparkle. You’re hardwired to dream bold, juicy, ingenious, and inspiring dreams. As you grew, that audacity was smothered deep within you. You were told to be sensible and practical and responsible. What a word. Responsible. Because you’re a little kid and you trusted the adults around you to teach you how the world worked, you bought into their fears without realizing they were just teaching you the fearful thinking they themselves had been raised with, and so you stop tending to your dreams. You lost private access to your power. You began to play small, and the sparkle within your eyes went dim. The main value of the past is what it’s made of you in the present, and today is the ideal day to start your best life. Six months from now, my guess is that you’ll have wished you began today, so why wait? Let go of any form of average. Lift up your expectations and your standards, and get seriously unreasonable with yourself and your dreams, because here’s the real key I’m trying to suggest to you. The bigger your dream, the more talent gets released from within you as you walk towards it. I’m going to repeat that again because it’s so important. The bigger your dream, the more talent gets released from within you. The problem is most people don’t have the confidence and self-belief to set an audacious vision © 2015 THE TITAN ACADEMY GLOBAL AG 10 THE 7 UNWRITTEN LAWS ONLY GAME-CHANGERS KNOW that awakens the greatness that sleeps within them. One of my favorite pieces of wisdom ... I love wisdom. I love quotes. I love a lot of the old literature because there’s so much to be learned from it. The playwright, George Bernard Shaw said it so beautifully. He said, “The unreasonable man adapts himself to the world. The unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.” Today, together, you begin your journey into the unreasonable. Please know, I am here to help, encourage, inspire, and support you in every step along the way. We are in this together as of today. The starting point for you though is to start the process of discovering what I’d call ‘Your compelling cause’. We’re hardwired neurobiologically to come to life, to really come to life once we discover a vision and a purpose that speaks to us at an emotional level. This truth explains why great producers like Steve Jobs, William Shakespeare, Leonardo da Vinci, Warren Buffett, John Coltrane were able to create and deliver as much epic work as they did. They were cause-fueled. That’s what law number one of a game-changer really is. One big example, Elon Musk. Born in 1971 in South Africa. From an early age, he viewed the world through a different filter. He coded his first computer game at 12, and sold it to a computer magazine for $500. After moving to Canada, and then to the United States where he joined Stanford’s PhD program, he and his brother started their company called ‘Zip2’. After only a few years in business, given it was during these 1990s and the Internet frenzy, they sold it to a company called ‘Compaq’, which you’ve heard of, for 307 million. Musk was 27. His next company was ‘X.com’ which morphed into PayPal, which he kneaded 100 million on when eBay bought it. Rather than retiring to some villa in the Caribbean, and coasting through the rest of his life in extreme wealth, Musk did the unfathomable. He invested 100 million of his own money in a beyond risky venture, involving a rocket company that would allow human beings to become multi-planetary species including his dream of colonizing Mars in the next 100 years. Then, he also started at the same time pretty much an electric car company called ‘Tesla’ in a world where no electric car company had ever been created. To add to the seeming insanity, he launched yet another company around the same time called ‘SolarCity’, which would install solar panels in the homes of millions of people. In 2008, he almost lost everything. The rockets being built were not launching. Tesla’s first car was vastly behind delivery schedule, and people started laughing 11 ROBIN SHARMA at him. They started ridiculing Musk, calling his ambitions impossible, and chattering away that his companies were on the way towards tragedy, and they lost everything. Then, on top of it all, the global economy collapsed. On top of even that, he was enduring a very messy divorce with his first wife. These words of Albert Camus have sustained me personally during adversity, and I think they fit here. “In the midst of winter, I found there was within me an invincible summer, and that makes me happy. For it says that no matter how hard the world pushes against me, within me, there’s something stronger, something better pushing right back.” In the midst of this personal winter that Elon Musk found within himself, something bigger than his adversity, he pushed right back. Life replied to his bravery born of a mighty vision with even more success. Within a few months, the fourth rocket launched by SpaceX was finally a success. NASA decided to make a big bet on Musk, and gave him a 1.6 billion dollar contract, and Tesla course corrected in investors, and investors including Dyler stepped up and saved the company. The results are exciting for me to share with you right now. SpaceX is valued at many billions of dollars. His outrageous dreams are coming true, and it’s a widely respected pioneer in the rocket field. Tesla, this brave and ridiculous idea of an electric car company is a leader in the electric car company arena. I love what Elon Musk himself said. He said, “If something is important enough to you, you should try even if the probable outcome is failure.” I watched the video where he was speaking at Stanford University, and he said, “The first two companies, SpaceX and Tesla, the likelihood of success was less than 50%, but it was something important so it needed to be done.” This is what law number one is all about. You want to be a game-changer, you need to have these audacious, scary goals that almost frighten you when you look at them written on the printed page. Once you set that goal and you 20X your life, and you say “I feel scared, but I need to do this whether it’s being a better baker, a better taxi drive, a better mother or father, starting something like a nonprofit in your field, being the best entrepreneur in your community, being an awesome teacher, being a great marathoner.” I don’t know what your dream is deep in your heart, but you need to get it done. If you don’t write it down and then start the process of executing around it, not next month, not next year, but today, and then start the process, you will not only die with your greatest dreams left within you, but you will not © 2015 THE TITAN ACADEMY GLOBAL AG 12 THE 7 UNWRITTEN LAWS ONLY GAME-CHANGERS KNOW evoke and elicit the talent that is slumbering within you. I guess what I’m suggesting probably not very elegantly, but it’s setting the mighty vision starts the process of your mighty vision coming true. The very nature of setting that mighty why evokes and elicits the talents, and the passion, and the energy that will bring the talents to the world and give you the fire in the belly that is probably missing in your life, otherwise, you wouldn’t be here right now. You are the kind of person who can get those dreams done, and you owe it to yourself. It’s not only your duty to do it, because then you honor the talents you were born into, but it’s your duty to your family. It’s your duty to the people you work with. It’s your duty to your community. It’s your duty to the world because the world will be better and benefit by your talents being in the world. Not only that, but you living your highest expression of your deepest vision will inspire us, and you’re going to show us what’s possible in a world where there is such a race to the bottom. Okay. That’s a little bit of my rant in this video, but I just want you to think about Elon Musk. I want you to be the Elon Musk of your work and your life beginning now. The big question becomes, “How did Musk really do it?” As I’ve been suggesting in one line, he was driven by a deeply compelling cause. More than any other human being on the planet today, I believe so, Musk is obsessed with helping elevate humanity, and it’s all driven by a powerful, game-changing vision to improve the very fate of humanity. The drive behind SpaceX is and was to save the world’s population crisis. The commitment behind Tesla is to remove the dependence on fossil fuels the world has and save the environment, and develop alternate forms of energy. That’s the same with SolarCity. We are hearing more and more about “I think the time is ready. The world is ready. Business is ready.” People are ready to hear, “You know what? You’ve got to know your purpose.” When I started out, people laughed at that. They say, “That’s two pie in the sky”, but probably, 15 years ago, I wrote a book called ‘Leadership Wisdom From The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari’ in a time where people were not talking about their why and their purpose and their mighty cause which has become very sexy right now. I wrote a chapter called ‘Link Paycheck to Purpose’. I talked about you’ve got to know your compelling cause, and you really do have to know your compelling cause beginning today, which is what this law number one is really all about. We’re just about to get to Game-Changer 13 ROBIN SHARMA Law number two, but I want to mention as well what Elon Musk did was not about ego, not about money, not about fame, not about external power. It was about getting the gorgeous vision that would raise humanity down with excellence and speed. Martin Luther King Junior said it so much better than I ever could when he said, “Unless you found the cause you’re willing to die for, you’re not fit to live. Be in service of something bigger than yourself, and the by-product is worldly fame.” Steve Jobs, his cause was to bring beautifully designed objects to the world to make their lives better. Taylor Swift, you might not love her or you might love her, but she’s a game-changer in the music industry. She was fueled by a cause, and is. “My hope”, she said, “Is that in every young girl, they realize their self-worth.” Harry Potter star, Emma Watson, who’s now obsessed with standing for the rights of women across the planet saying she has “a passionate purpose about releasing the talents young women didn’t know they had.” I guess what I’m suggesting to you is if you lead from your ego and if you make it all about money and fame and power, your focus and your acumen, and your drive, and your obsession will be off the creativity and the vision and the fire in the belly that will get you all those other worldly things, guaranteed. Before I end on this first law, you don’t have to be an Elon Musk. You don’t have to be a Steve Jobs. You don’t have to be a Thomas Edison or even a Mother Teresa to find the cause that the folks you write is talent. There was a Johannesburg janitor that I met when I went into the men’s room or the bathroom or the restroom, whatever you call it in wherever from the across the world you’re watching this video. As I walked into this restroom, his eyes lit up. He said, “Welcome to my office.” This man was a janitor, but he cleaned the washroom in the Johannesburg men’s room like Mozart composed music, and like Van Gogh did his paintings. Why? Because he actually told me he sees himself as an ambassador of South Africa, and that every single person who walks into that place where he is blessed to work and make his living, he can have the opportunity to lift them up a little bit. I was on the airplane a little while ago, and the flight attendant said, “We don’t have the green tea that you want, but in my purse, I have some. I’d be blessed to share it with you.” She understood and is driven by some cause which is every day is an opportunity to influence and lift up the world one person at a time. I was in New York City from LaGuardia going into Manhattan, and there was a taxi driver. He was not an Elon Musk, but he was the Elon Musk of his own life. He said, “I dress the way I do, and my cab is the way it is, which © 2015 THE TITAN ACADEMY GLOBAL AG 14 THE 7 UNWRITTEN LAWS ONLY GAME-CHANGERS KNOW is impeccable, because this is not a dirty job, and I am all about making a difference.” You know the teacher in your community, and you know the barista in your coffee shop. These are the true game-changers in many ways because they have found something bigger than themselves that they’re investing their life in. Okay. Great job being with me so far. We’re ready for Game-Changer Law number two. “You don’t get lucky. You make lucky.” The world sells us a series of lies about what it takes to lead a life that wows all witnesses. Society trains us to believe from a pretty young age that those among us who express a great skill achieve awesome results and rise to iconic, are cut from a different cloth, that they have uncommon genetics, have divinely blessed talents, and other worldly gifts that make them exceptional from the rest of us. The average person is then left with the psychology that world class performance is something that is just not intended for them. Becoming an A-Player is not within their grasp. Being considered a titan of what they do and how they live has no role in their fate, and so most of us don’t even start the process of becoming one, because what would be the point? Key insight I invite you to really wrap your thinking around. Positive psychologists confirmed that your perception about your potential determines how much of your potential you will actually bring to life. That’s a tremendously important point, so I’ll say it again or suggest it again is probably a better way of saying it. “Your perception about your potential determines how much of your potential you’ll actually allow to see the light of day.” If you don’t think you’re worth very much, you won’t do very much. If your self-identity says you’re just the kind of person who needs to spend the best hours of your life watching television in the subdivision then your performance will match that, because your daily behavior always reflects your deepest beliefs. Leading scientists like Steven Spencer, and you’re going to love this. They write about a phenomenon known as ‘Stereotype threat’, which describes the fact that when people think they’re part of a social group that doesn’t succeed in a certain area, they perform in a way that exactly matches that internal expectation. What does this mean for you and me? It means that if you come from a neighborhood of low achievers, and if you’re not careful to manage your thinking and your self-identity well, you’ll unconsciously ... It’s unconscious. You don’t even know you’re doing it. Unconsciously, you’ll buy into the stereotype and perform as a low achiever. This means that if you fall into the trap of making excuses like “My parents didn’t have money, 15 ROBIN SHARMA so I can’t have money”, or “People just like me can’t achieve amazing results”, that kind of thinking program will create a self-fulfilling prophecy, and you’ll get a life born of those fears. There is even more extremely powerful information emerging from science, and it’s called ‘Epigenetics’. You’re going to adore even this. Okay. If you love that, even more powerful information that I’m going to offer to you. It’s emerging again from science. It’s called ‘Epigenetics’. What is epigenetics? It’s information in a cell that determines which traits within a genome will get expressed. Now, it’s all pretty complex, but the bottom line for you and me right now is this. Science is discovering that environmental factors including how you think, behave, what you do every day, how you respond to stress, your daily diet, your environment, even things like do you watch the news actually influence what part of your genetic potential you will express over the course of your lifetime. It even suggests according to epigenetics, if the people around you are depressed, you will become depressed. If the people around you don’t think they’re going to play at world class, you will become someone who thinks you can’t play at world class. If your environment is dull and uninspired, don’t be surprised if your genetic languaging in your DNA which is in every one of your cells does not express the genes that you were born into. Another bottom line what it means for you, it actually means you have the choice, the choice, the choice as to how much of your genetic potential you actually get to express between now and the rest of your life. That is an incredibly exciting finding because it means you actually have the power to choose whether you fully express your genetic potential or not. It means that your decisions actually affect your epigenetics and gene expression. It also means if you’re making bad dietary choices or friend choices or circle of influence choices or fitness choices or intellectual choices or emotional decisions, you’re actually going to pass that way of being not only across the rest of your life, but down to your future generations who will follow you according to science. On the other hand, when you make new choices as to how you think, how you perform, how you achieve, what you learn, how you live, you literally change the abilities and the lives not only of your life, but your future generations. As I’ve been suggesting, if you buy into the myth, that those who were called ‘Geniuses’ and ‘Lead Performers’ are naturally endowed with talents you don’t have, then you won’t do the work required, invest in the learning programs needed, surround yourself with the right people to become a genius in your chosen field, and live a life that you’ll be proud of at the end. Why? Because what would be the point? What would be the value of setting © 2015 THE TITAN ACADEMY GLOBAL AG 16 THE 7 UNWRITTEN LAWS ONLY GAME-CHANGERS KNOW this epic vision for your future I mentioned under law one? What would be the point of practicing relentlessly and putting them to training hours obsessively? What would be the sense of learning more and investing in your personal development, and investing in the online courses, and getting the right coaching, and being in the right population because it wouldn’t make a difference? If you think and behave like this, you’ll betray your genetic and human potential to do amazing things with your life and live a life that does inspire the world around you. I’m going to encourage you to think about famous psychologist, Alfred Binet, who invited the first practical intelligence test. He once observed, “It’s not always the one who starts out the smartest who ends up the smartest.” I’ve got to repeat that again because it’s so fundamentally important. I’ve got to repeat that again because it’s so mind-bending. He said, “It’s not the one who starts out the smartest who ends up the smartest.” According to science, our very definition of what potential means is changing. Science really is teaching us that that whole idea of potential is a lot more flexible and plastic, and moving than we traditionally have been taught for hundreds of years. For example, the concept of neuroplasticity is now explaining that our brains are like a muscle, and that the more we flex them, the stronger and faster they grow. In this moment, you actually have the brain you’ve earned versus the brain you deserve. What’s the game-changing idea right now? Even more confirmation of what I’m sharing from you comes from psychologists like Carol Dweck. She says, “It all comes down to...” In other words, being a game-changer and an epic performer all comes down to instillation of one simple, yet extremely important belief. Here’s that belief. My potential and talent is not fixed from birth. My potential and talent can grow if I do the work to get the growth. In her excellent book, ‘Mindset’, Dweck makes the distinction between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset. Her research shows that every top performer in her studies had this second growth mindset in common. In other words, they believed that if they did the right things, they would get the results, and if they kept on learning and training, they would keep on rising. You can spot a person with a fixed mindset a mile away. What do they look like? They’re stuck. They’re stagnant. They unconsciously operate as victims, blaming the unfair hands of fate for the way their lives look. These people with a fixed mindset recite excuses like “Successful 17 ROBIN SHARMA people just get lucky”, and “Geniuses have special genetics”, and “Learning is a waste of time”, and “I tried to get better, but it didn’t work”, and “I could never do what those great people do. They’re just different from me, and I’m just born this way.” Human beings with this mindset, they complain a lot and they excuse a lot. They watch a lot of mindless TV. They do as little as possible on any given day. They think investing in personal development courses and professional education is a waste of time. They numb the pain of potential unexpressed by video games and web searching, and they basically live the same year 80 times, and they call it a life. No judgment, but they totally see themselves as unfortunate little victims. They’re giving away their power to do the amazing things that they could do with their lives to the people in conditions around them. People with the growth mindset to use Carol Dweck’s term are extremely different in their thinking and their world view. They think like leaders. They get that fortune and success is less about your static DNA, and more about your perception, and your commitment, and your character, and your choices. As I’ve shared, you can actually cause your DNA to more fully and beautifully express itself through the power of epigenetics. Producers with the growth mindset love to learn. They get that the more they know, the more they can achieve. They understand that through focus, hard work, things that are within their control, other things like tons of practice, persistence, grit, patience, extraordinary results are guaranteed to show up pretty quickly. When they fail, people with the growth mindset treat it as part of the process of getting better. When they are challenged, they rise to meet the challenge, knowing that setbacks are nothing more than opportunity in wolf’s clothing. Today, in this moment, my encouragement to you is to tattoo onto your brain cells the belief that rare-air performance and vast success has less to do with the potential you were born with, and a lot more about ... I’m going to underline this for you, mentally what you choose to do with whatever potential you are born with. In life, it’s not the most talented who wins, but the bravest, the one willing to focus the most, practice, persevere when failure appears, outlearn the competition, surround themselves with other A-Players, and create the environment needed to be the best. I guess what I’m suggesting to you is confidence in your abilities, faith in your capacities is far more valuable than this inborn talent concept, and commitment beats giftedness every single time. © 2015 THE TITAN ACADEMY GLOBAL AG 18 THE 7 UNWRITTEN LAWS ONLY GAME-CHANGERS KNOW You’re smart, so you know this truth. The world really is full of these super high I.Q. and genetically blessed human beings who did very little with what they were born with. The history books are full of top athletes and musicians and business greats, and science pioneers who started off average but worked their way up to legendary. Just one example is Einstein was called “slow”. Can you believe that? More science. James Flynn, the psychologist, uses the term ‘Capitalization I.Q.’ to describe the phenomenon I’m speaking of, that what you do with your talent is far more essential than how much of it you were born with. Again, the key idea is this is within your hands. Okay. We’re almost at law number three to be a game-changer, but I want to offer some final examples of so-called ‘Ordinary people’ who did extraordinary things. Sir John Templeton who passed away at the age of 95 a number of years ago, he grew up in very humble beginnings in a small town in Tennessee. Very few people around him had ever been to university, but he believed in his own potential, and he believed in his own talents, and believed in the value of education and relentless persistence. What did he do? He worked his way into Yale. He paid his way into Yale, and at the age of 26, he borrowed $10,000 to purchase 100 shares in 104 companies that at the time were offering a share for less than one dollar. Thirty-four of those companies were in bankruptcy. You see what I mean? A bit of bold, crazy vision and how important it is. Because of that, he found it within himself to step into the talents that he was born with. Within a few years, he made a small fortune for this move and formed an investment company, that then went about pioneering this unheard of concept at the time of mutual funds. Over the decades, his fortune grew into billions, but he still lived simply driving his own car, spending most of his days reading and writing and dedicating himself to philanthropy. Another example as we get to law number three which you’re going to love, Misty Copeland. I love this example. She could have behaved as a victim. She could have been addicted to her excuses. She could have given away her power as a human being through the tough conditions she experienced. She could have waved the white flag of surrender to the promise of her highest possibilities, but she dug deep, and she made a series of choices that made her now one of the brightest ballet stars in the world and a hero to so many. Here’s a backstory. Copeland grew up not knowing her father, living with a number of step-fathers, 19 ROBIN SHARMA eventually living in a single room at the Sunset Inn next to a highway and a bunch of liquor stores. She had to take buses to ballet practice, one time missing it and having to walk 13 miles home. Through endless focus, persistence, grit and practice, Copeland has worked to become the first African-American woman to be named a principle dancer in the 75-year history of the American Ballet Theatre. The final example, a few weeks ago, I read about this kid from Kenya. He was poor as dirt. He didn’t get shoes until his teens. He was one of 11 children in his family. Yet, he longed to run. He wasn’t the most gifted, but he was the most committed. He longed to lead his field. He longed to be on the podium of the heroes he would watch and represent his nation as a runner. Again, he wasn’t the most gifted. He wasn’t the most talented, but through his choices, he expressed his epigenetic potential, and he did some amazing things. He did the work too though. He’d run a 125 miles a week, and yet, in his day job, he smashed rocks in a quarry to feed himself. Years later, Geoffrey Mutai is now considered one of the greatest marathoners in the history of the marathon. He’s rich. He’s famous. He’s adored, but you know what? More than anything else from everything I’ve read about him, he’s a man who loves himself by the things that he’s done. I want to congratulate you because we are now at Game-Changer Law number three. “You can be a virtuoso or you can be popular, but you can’t be both.” In a biography on Jay Z that I read, something just popped off the page for me. It was his comment that he knew he’d achieved lift off in pop culture success when haters started trying to tear him down. He even wrote a song about it with Kanye West called ‘Haters’. Taylor Swift who I mentioned a little earlier in this video has written a similar song that speaks to this human reality of people leaving the membership of the cult of mediocrity and starting to make the rise into rare-air levels of success and influence, experience the fact that other human beings try to bring them down. The deeper psychology behind this is when you model the highest of creative and productive possibility, you will inevitably bring up the insecurities of all those who have not used their own potential. Rather than accepting personal responsibility for the way their lives look, and then making the changes needed to make their life a life that wows, it’s far easier for people in this cult of mediocrity and safer to throw stones at those who have succeeded. Winston Churchill said it beautifully. “You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something © 2015 THE TITAN ACADEMY GLOBAL AG 20 THE 7 UNWRITTEN LAWS ONLY GAME-CHANGERS KNOW sometime in your life.” When you stand up for your gifts, when you stand up for your dreams, when you stand up for your values, when you stand up for your life, when you stand up for your gifts, when you stand up for your dreams, when you stand up for your deepest values, when you stand up for the life you have been placed on this earth to live, my friend, I share with you from the deepest place within me right now, people will attack you. If you really get to a place of world class, they will start to hate you because the very nature of a disruptor, the very nature of a game-changer, the very nature of a leader means you leave the herd of average, and you rise into the rare-air of the place you have been designed to be. I guess what I’m suggesting to you is being a game-changer is a lonely sport. As you apply all the ideas I’ve hopefully very passionately shared and researched, and really obsessed on so they’re great for you and make a real visceral difference in your work life, your productivity, your mindset, your performance, your family life, your love life, your community life, every core area of your life, but as you start to do what I’m sharing, you’re going to rise to this new level of achievement, results and impact. Please just expect. Just expect it that you’ll be criticized and that you’ll be condemned, and you’ll be misunderstood, and oftentimes by the people who are closest to you. Also, just remember that ridicule is the price visionaries pay for leading a life that makes history. I mean, just imagine where the music world would be if Kanye West or John Coltrane or Mozart or Beethoven or Bach had listened to the haters who were threatened by the full expression of their highest brilliance. Just imagine where technology would be if Steve Jobs or the Google guys didn’t persist in executing around their goals. Just imagine where science would be without Da Vinci or Copernicus or Jonas Sulk or Albert Einstein if they listened to the people who laughed at them and who said, “Your visions are impossible and you don’t have enough talent.” Where would the world be if the true game-changers had bought into their haters? As you know, the starting point is believing in you because no one is going to believe in your vision until you deeply believe in your vision. Just remember as well, self-confidence is contagious. Okay. Game-Changer Law number four, “Failure reveals progress, and heartbreak delivers strength.” Before we go further, I’ve got to say I think you’re awesome. Do you know how rare it is someone in this world right now where people are addicted to distraction, they can’t sit still, so many people don’t have the focus? I call it ‘Broken focus syndrome’. So many people, they snack on great content. They don’t show commitment anymore. 21 ROBIN SHARMA They don’t follow through on their learning. They don’t follow through on their promises. They don’t follow through on their dreams. No judgment whatsoever. Just an observation. You are here with me to this point, Game-Changer Law number four. What does that say about you? What does that say about what’s within you? What does that say about your potential? What does that say about the kind of person you are? It says to me you are the kind of person that has something deep within you that knows you want to be a gamechanger, and you want to learn how to be a game-changer. It says to me you’re the kind of person that will do the things that I will share now in this video, throughout this video in the next two videos that I’m going to be sending to you, that you will not only read them, you’ll not only watch them, you’ll not only be open to them, you’ll not only digest them. You’re actually going to execute around them. It also suggests to me you will get the results as you do the work. I just want to congratulate you because you don’t see it so much in the world that we currently live in, and I think it’s worth me saying “Congratulations”. Okay. Law number four is going to start off with a great quote from Nietzsche who once said, “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” He also sagely observed that “Chaos gives birth to dancing stars.” I guess what I’m suggesting is crisis brings the potential for extraordinary transformation. I say potential because most people really do allow failure to crush them, but the game-changer is vastly different. She or he leverages. Leverages. Leverages is the key word, adversity to grow them. It’s just a belief they install and then a decision they practice, and just as the violinist who trains daily gets better, and the chess champion who practices regularly becomes greater, and the boxer who does the workouts every morning while the world is asleep grows stronger. Using difficulty to your advantage is a skill that you will definitely become brilliant at with daily devotion and practice. That’s one of the great things about practice. Every single workout makes you a little bit better, and small daily optimizations and improvements over time lead to legendary results. The victim will say “I’m having a bad day or a bad decade or a bad life”, or the fixed mindset entrepreneur will say, “Why me?”, and get stuck, and the growth mindset entrepreneur and the real game-changer will practice developing a mindset and an emotional architecture and a way of being. Again, it’s not something that’s a quick fix, but it happens inevitably over weeks and months until it becomes your automatic default, which is exciting © 2015 THE TITAN ACADEMY GLOBAL AG 22 THE 7 UNWRITTEN LAWS ONLY GAME-CHANGERS KNOW for you because it’s within your choices and you will get there as you do the work. The big idea is you will get to a mindset where when you get knocked down, you automatically get up. You will get to a mindset where you actually see hardship as opportunity, and beautiful possibility to make yourself and your results even greater. Please just remember this core principle. A problem only becomes a problem if you’re running the mental software and install the hard-wiring architecture and operating system that says “Problems are problems”. I totally get that you say, “But Robin, isn’t feeling the pain or getting discouraged during a difficult time, isn’t that part of being human?” I’d say to you, “That’s an old way of being human.” What I’m inviting you to start playing with and being a game-changer is human nature 2.0. I want you to start feeling that “Yes. It’s human nature in the past for most human beings according to those old beliefs to feel that intense hardship is hard.” It is at times. I agree it’s definitely just top five percent thinking to see that something difficult and feeling stuck that has knocked you down can actually lift you up. I get that this way of being definitely takes practice over the coming days, weeks, and months until you get there, but it’s so worth it. I mean, if this was easy, everyone would be doing it. If being world class was easy, everyone would be doing it. If being in the best fitness of your life was easy, everyone would be in the best fitness of their lives. If doing world class work that stuns your industry was easy, everyone would be a Jordan or a Picasso or an Elon Musk or the Mother Teresa of what it is that they do, or the Misty Copeland of their industry. That’s the opportunity, because so few people are willing to do the work and go deeper. It’s because so few people believe that they can rise to iconic, and I’ve given you the science. That’s all just a myth. You have that opportunity here today. What I’m suggesting to you is as you do the practice and do the training and do the work, you will feel confident, positive, happy, and peaceful on the inside no matter what’s going on on the outside. That is a great place to be. Your inner state of grace and power will no longer be conditional on everything in your outer world being perfect, and that’s an amazing place to be. If you’re still resisting me on this idea that you really have it within you to get to a place where no matter if your outer world is falling apart, you are graceful, powerful, and strong within, please just think about this. Everything you now find easy, you once found hard. That’s the very nature of developing any skill. See, all of this 23 ROBIN SHARMA is developing a skill. Unconditional bravery is the skill that we’re talking about. Of course, it’s going to be hard at first. Of course it’s going to be messy in the middle as all your false beliefs get torn down and make way for better beliefs, and it’s going to be ever so gorgeous at the end which is the state of mastery. Okay. You’re saying, “Robin, you gave us some beautiful science in the previous laws. Give it to me now.” Science is confirming a lot on what I’m talking about under this law, which is that as human beings, we have been hardwired to grow into this life state, or we can stay strong even if our outer life is falling apart, whether it’s a business failure or job loss or divorce or health issue. If you look at what’s going on in the global economy right now, and if you look at what’s going on geopolitically right now, these are top topsy-turvy, messy, dangerous, confusing times for the victim, and these are gorgeous, inspiring, amazing, exciting times for the game-changer. I mean, this is a time where a lot of people are going to crumble as we advance into what’s coming. Not only economically, but with the world, with industry, with job losses that are going to be coming, with emotional change that what people are going to be going through. It’s going to be a messy, messy time of turbulence, and sometimes, people say chaos. For those who are going to apply the things that I’ve been teaching you, for those committed to being game-changers, for those who are going to be practicing the concepts I’ve been teaching you, this is going to be the best ten years that you have ever lived until your next ten years, and you really do want to create an internal state of such power and such invincibility that you no longer need your outer world to be wonderful for you to feel wonderful. You want to build yourself up to the point where you feel wonderful no matter what. Unconditional bravery, so please allow me to share with you some of the cutting edge insights that science is teaching us on dealing with adversity. Number one, stress isn’t evil. Stress is actually essential for your finest performance. Stress wakes up your gifts. It wakes up your capacities. It wakes up your abilities. To expand your universe of your potential and your performance, the key is really to push all the way to your limits and a little beyond is what the research says. As you do so, you’re going to leave your safe harbor of the known and sail into the blue ocean of greater achievement. As you do, what happens is you bring up a very human emotion called ‘Fear’. Fear is just a symptom, and the symptom of fear is stress. It’s just part of the process of developing any new skill, and it’s just part of the process of growing and expanding your production and your performance. © 2015 THE TITAN ACADEMY GLOBAL AG 24 THE 7 UNWRITTEN LAWS ONLY GAME-CHANGERS KNOW Stress is really just growth coming to get you. The second insight from science is that the key to stress management is actually recovery management. As I mentioned to you, stress is good. The key is to install the right rituals and routines that ensure that you have enough recovery from the stress that you’re going to experience as you become an epic performer. In studies of groups like war vets and adults who experienced trauma, the ones who actually used the hard times to get better all had similar recovery routines in common. These are people who practice things like gratitude, which there’s a ton of good science coming out, which is gratitude is actually the antidote of fear. It releases the motivational neurotransmitter like dopamine, and it has to be deliberate gratitude which is you don’t just do it once a year. You develop a gratitude practice that’s very deliberate, so every day you list ten things that are blessings in your life. That might sound a little soft, but actually, it affects the way that your brain works. It releases these neurotransmitters, and it also trains your brain to focus on what’s good in your life versus what’s not working in your life. These people also have in common recovery routines like reframing adversity into opportunity. Other recovery routines included leveraging physical fitness. They were in the best fitness of their lives, and that created this internal pharmacy of mastery that allowed them to turn hard times into times of growth. Almost all of these people that were studied found some great purpose and learned from the lessons of the trials they were working through. What these recovery routines did ... Another one would be meditation. Meditation is nothing really spiritual or religious. Meditation actually grows your prefrontal cortex. Meditation actually releases BDNF, brain-derived neurotropic factor that has been shown not only to grow brain cells. Isn’t that exciting? Grow brain cells, but actually to repair damaged brain cells that occurred during stress. Physical fitness also releases brain-derived neurotropic factor which has been called ‘Miracle-Gro for the Brain’, so you definitely want to use these recovery methods including the meditation, the physical fitness, the daily gratitude practice to then train your brain to release the dopamine and all the good chemicals so that your response to difficult times actually is vastly different from the ordinary people around you. Okay. GameChanger Law number five, “Daily wins beat unexpected breakthroughs.” Consistency is the mother of mastery. Consistency is more valuable than intelligence. What you do every single day is so much more important and valuable than what you do once every once in a while. 25 ROBIN SHARMA The best writers write when they wake up, not only when they feel inspired. The best athletes do their practice when they’re committed to doing it, instead of when they just feel like doing it. The most successful entrepreneurs do the work when they scheduled it, not when they had the energy to execute around it. What I’m really asking you to wrap your brain cells around is self-discipline beats lucky breaks every single time, and you really want to get your daily schedule right. One of my favorite stories is the story of Picasso. By the way, if you ever have a chance, go to Barcelona and find the Picasso Museum. It’s full of his great works. It’s full of a lot of information on how he ran his days. One thing that really stands out even to this day was in there, there was a sign that said “People were disturbed by the genius of Picasso”. When you start playing your best game and when you start being the game-changer, I know you are built to be. People will be disturbed by the brilliance, and the giftedness, and the talent, and the energy, and the work you release out in the world. One day, Picasso was in a marketplace. This woman saw Picasso. She ran over to him and she said, “Mr. Picasso, I’m a huge fan. Would you please do a little drawing for me?” He said, “Sure.” She pulled out a little piece of paper and handed him a pencil. She said, “Mr. Picasso, here you go.” He looked at this little piece of paper and he did this little drawing and handed it to the woman. The woman looked at it and said, “Ah. Mr. Picasso, you’re a genius. You’re so brilliant”, and she walked away. He stopped her and he said, “Ah, my dear lady.” She said, “Yes.” He said, “That’ll be a million dollars.” She said, “What? Mr. Picasso, that took you 30 seconds to do that.” He looked at her and he said, “My dear lady, it took me 30 years of daily focus and running a daily routine and daily consistency to be able to do what I gave to you in 30 seconds.” Again, what you do every day is so very important. A lot of the great companies or a lot of the great performers, sometimes it’s easy to fall into the seduction that let me have a revolutionary act that allows me to rise to world class. Even businesses. Just let me do one product created on one Friday afternoon that will change the world, that will change the industry, that will change the way this company rises. If you look at the Apples and you look at the Googles, you look at the Amazons, you look at the William Shakespeares, you look at the Alexander Wangs, you look at the Emma Watsons, you look at the best of the best, © 2015 THE TITAN ACADEMY GLOBAL AG 26 THE 7 UNWRITTEN LAWS ONLY GAME-CHANGERS KNOW and they all got that. Greatness is less about revolution, and greatness is so much more about evolution. Your days are your life in miniature. What you do today is literally creating the entire future you’ll be experiencing, which brings me to game-changer law number six. This is one of my favorite ones. “The more you learn, the more you’ll achieve.” Read almost any great biography from any great performer, and you’ll discover they all have one thing in common. They are absolutely fanatical learners. They totally get that the single best investment you will ever make is to go all in in investing in yourself. Elon Musk’s brother, Kimbal said that “Elon would regularly read for 10 hours a day.” I remember hearing a fantastic interview on Warren Buffett by Charlie Rose. He said, “What do you do every day that has made you one of the brightest thinkers in investing?” He said, “I read for about 10 hours every day.” I mean, Charlie Rose couldn’t believe it. He said, “You spend most of your days reading?” The key to really remember this is as you know more, you can do more. Steve Jobs was not a genius. Steve Jobs could see more and around corners compared to his industry peers because he was obsessed. All he did was read and live and think about technology, the intersection between entertainment and technology, and the things that mattered most to him. A key high performance law is simply this. Your external results can never be greater than your internal self. What’s going on within your thinking, within your feelings, within your physical life and your spiritual world all unite to produce your behavior in the world. The core move is to do the inner work need to construct an undefeatable self. Then, as you advance through the world, you become undefeatable. Psychologists have a term ... Again, we’ll go to some science. The psychologists have a term for this called ‘Personality Hardiness’. The great news is via practice and via choices, like learning, investing in your personal development, professional education, you can cultivate it. Via practicing, you can strengthen it. By devotion, you will unleash it. I call this the ‘2X3X Mindset’. If you want to double your income and your impact, you absolutely must make a commitment to tripling your investment in two core areas. Your personal development. In other words, thinking like a pro, releasing the anger and frustration and lack of self-worth in your emotional life, doing the work required and learning what it takes to 27 ROBIN SHARMA become physically fit like an athlete, and doing the spiritual work so that you do live for a cause that’s larger than yourself. That’s the whole physical piece, and that’s the whole personal development piece. The second thing to invest in is your professional education. I mean, you literally want to be the heavyweight champion of your industry. You really, really want to know more about what you do than anyone who’s ever done the work that you do. That’s a gorgeous opportunity, because people pay for the best, even if we’re in a recession, even if there’s a meltdown globally, economically, even if there’s job layoffs, even if you are facing more competition in your sector than ever before. If you are the best at what you do, people will blaze a path to your door. You want to commit yourself today, now, to outright mastery. Every legendary performer truly has invested massively in their learning and in their skills development. Personally, I invest in at least two audiobooks every single week. I call it ‘Traffic University’. When I’m driving to the office, when I’m driving to a meeting, when I’m driving to pick up my kids from let’s say soccer practice or whatever it is, I am listening to Audiobooks. I’m learning about productivity. I’m learning about mindset. I’m learning about relationship building. I’m learning about stress management. I’m learning about leadership. I’m learning about entrepreneurship. I’m learning about philosophy. I’m learning about the lives of great people through their autobiographies or their biographies. I’m going through one right now. It’s on Roosevelt. I went through another one recently on John F. Kennedy, but I download books relentlessly. Personally, I invest in online courses constantly. I’ve got some of the best ideas that have been truly right angle turns that have transformed my business life, my mental life, my productivity life, my energy life, my physical life, my personal life from the courses that I’ve invested in online. Then, every quarter, you definitely want to invest in going to a conference, because you can’t put a price tag not only on the information you’re going to learn, but being in a room with people who are as smart as you or even smarter and who have done the things that you want to do. I call this the ‘Roger Bannister Metaphor’. You know who Roger Bannister is. He was the first human being to run a mile in under four minutes. Before he did that, people said “No one could ever do this. It is simply impossible given the human dimensions for a human being to run a mile in under four © 2015 THE TITAN ACADEMY GLOBAL AG 28 THE 7 UNWRITTEN LAWS ONLY GAME-CHANGERS KNOW minutes.” After he did it, within the weeks and months have followed, lots of people did it. It’s not that it wasn’t possible. It’s no one had ever seen it done. That’s why I call it the ‘Roger Bannister Metaphor’. Once you’re in a room like by going to a conference, being around the people who are doing the things you want to do, and living the life you want to live, you see what’s possible. Then, you trigger your mirror neurons, and then you trigger their what’s called ‘Emotional Contagion’, so you actually pick up their emotions of hope and confidence and possibility, and you leave the conference totally transformed. I guess what I’m suggesting is an investment in education scales your confidence. Being around big thinkers and game-changers shows you what’s possible. If they can do it, you can do it. Here’s the real question for you right now. If they can do it, why not you? Education is inoculation against disruption. As you know more, you can do more. The person who learns the most wins. Okay. Almost at law number seven, but I really do just have to share this final idea with you because it’s relevant to law number six. One of the best ideas I’ve learned from billionaire, Warren Buffett is to focus on return on value versus the cost, because it’s so easy for your self-saboteur to say “I can’t afford this book”, or “I can’t afford this online course. I can’t afford to go to things like The Titan Summit that you do every year, Robin. I can’t afford good coaching. I can’t afford to get a physical trainer”, which is another game-changer. What I learned from Warren Buffett is this. Average performers are constantly worried about the cost of learning, investing in a book, investing in the course, going to the seminar, but the best of the best thinks so fundamentally different. If the investment in the learning in education doubles or triples what they pay, then what they paid was actually free. They actually made money on the investment. That’s a fundamentally different way of seeing the world. I encourage you whatever it is you do, whether it’s the equipment you use for work, whether it’s the things you do in your personal life, look at the return on investment versus just the cost. Game-Changer Law number seven, “What you release into the world is donated back to you.” I always think about what my father shared using the words of the great poet, Rabindranath Tagore. Rabindranath Tagore once said, “When you were born, you cried while the world rejoiced. Live your life in such a way that when you die, the world cries while you rejoice.” 29 ROBIN SHARMA It’s a fundamental truth which is even the longest life is a very short ride. Before you know it, you will be at the end. Before you know it, you’re on the last hour of your last day. The human reality is that the CEO gets buried next to the street sweeper. My friend, what if the things you now think are most important, and the last hour of your last day, you realize those things mattered so little? I don’t think when you get the last hour of your last day, the car you drove, the title on your business card, the size of the house you lived in, whether your peers thought you were cool, whether you were liked by the people around you, whether you had a certain level of net worth, I don’t think all of those shiny toys that society sells us on the true measures of success will be most important when you connect with your mortality. With deep respect and love, I suggest to you what will matter most when you get to the very end of your life will really come down to two fundamental things. Number one, who did you become? Did you use whatever potential and gifts you were born into to express them to the world? Who did you become? Did you become brave, amid fear? Did you become loving, amid turmoil? Did you do work that matters? Were you the industry leader of what you did even if you clean toilets? Who did you become? Were you a woman or a man of honor and integrity and decency and humanity? Number two, how many people did you help? I mean, even people with so-called ‘unimportant jobs’ can change the world like that janitor in the Johannesburg Airport changed my life, and to this day, I remember him. All it takes is one encounter with one person who says “I might not have the big title, and I might not be who the world calls ‘a game-changer’, but using my own inner power, using my power to transform, my power to do great work, my power to uplift other people, I can one person at a time change their world.” That could have a cascading effect through our world. Law number seven really is about that which is “Whatever you give to the world, that is what you’re going to receive.” You give out great work, great things come to you. You radiate positivity, positivity comes back to you. You keep your promises, great things come back to you. You treat even strangers with decency and respect and optimism, that’s what going to come back to you. You give, that’s what’s you get. Please just remember, life fundamentally is very, very short. Someone took their last breath doing that very thing. When we’re born, we take this big inhalation to start our lives, and at the very end, the last thing we do is we exhale. Really, what we do in between those defines our entire life and our legacy.
