We have been preparing for the biggest event for CABMET, none other than the CABMET Symposium. This year will be bigger than ever! If you do not come for the great classes, the golf, the poker tournament, the vendors’ presentations, the great prizes or even the great food, you must come and hear our key note speaker the Steven Grimes. Steven Grimes was the former Director of Vanderbilt’s Clinical Engineering and the past President for American College of Clinical Engineers (ACCE). His presentation on Clinical Engineering and I.T. convergence will surely be thought provoking and applicable for everyone engaged in preparing for the future of the Biomed field. Mr. Grimes is the expert in this area and CABMET is honored to have him speak. I hope everyone takes advantage of all the great classes and the vendors showing the latest and greatest technologies for the Healthcare industry. This year we have consolidated the Symposium to the Fitzsimons campus area. Children’s is hosting the Symposium, and if you attended last year you will know that Children’s is a perfect facility for our annual meeting. Fitzsimons hosted our very first golf tournament and we are back to where all began. We have a terrific new venue for the poker tournament. The Timbers is a great place to host this very popular event. I hope many of you will take advantage of the fun, camaraderie and excitement that this event will provide. As you know the Symposium is a special occasion and year after a few hard working members share the hard work to bring this a valuable event to you. We really do need of volunteers to assist with the golf tournament and helping with setting up and tearing down for the symposium. Please email [email protected] if you are interested in helping out. I hope everyone enjoyed and benefitted from the very thought provoking and well delivered presentation from Myron Hartman. Does everyone have their goal list filled out? We owe a debt of gratitude for ¬¬¬¬¬Jeff Kiene and Medrad for hosting the May meeting at Good Samaritans. A special thanks goes to Joe Medina for hosting and setting up the room for our meeting. CABMET wishes to congratulate our essay winners. Leticia Malone is a special CABMET member who could not attend AAMI due to her service to our country. Leticia should be honored and thanked for her sacrifice and dedication for serving in Armed Forces. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers, best wishes for her deployment. We are excited about having Richard Marshall join us in Tampa for the AAMI conference. It is great to see young talent learn and grow and AAMI has a lot to offer in this area. Richard will have an opportunity to share his experience with CABMET. If anyone is going to the AAMI convention please stop by the CABMET booth and say hi to us and Richard Marshal our super CABMET essay winner. I hope everyone has a great summer and we look forward to seeing you all at the symposium!! Hit’em straight golfers. Grimes, FACCE FFHIMSS FAIMBE Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise and CE-IT collaboration – Come and hear about some of the exciting successes and challenges in learning to integrate the medical equipment environment with the information technology environment. This is an area of Biomed, or Clinical Engineering, that is growing and changing very rapidly, especially with some of the new initiatives coming out of the government. For the success of any of our customers, it is very important for our Biomed community to become very familiar with this subject. Stephen Grimes is Director of Clinical Systems Engineering at Linc Health, a healthcare technology consulting, management and service organization meeting the needs of over 200 clients throughout the U.S. Mr. Grimes specializes in technology management, medical and information technology convergence and integration related matters, with nearly 35 years experience with hospitals, shared service organizations, and healthcare consulting and research firms. He is a nationally recognized authority and a frequent speaker and author on topics ranging from future challenges facing clinical engineering to healthcare technology integration, medical device security and risk management issues. He also serves as a healthcare technology management consultant to the World Health Organization (WHO) and Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). He is a Fellow of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) where he chaired their Medical Device Security Workgroup. He was also named a Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE). And he is a Fellow American College of Clinical Engineering (ACCE) where he is that organization’s immediate past President. He is a graduate of Purdue University’s Biomedical Engineering Program. Case stUDy A 12-year old girl with a heart murmur was referred to a cardiologist at the Karolinska University Hospital in Sweden. An echocardiographic examination was performed and was unrevealing as to the source of the murmur. The patient was subsequently re-examined using a different ultrasound system and transducer; this examination clearly revealed a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) – a serious congenital heart defect, as the murmur’s source. The patient was treated surgically and is now back at play, the picture of health. The underlying cause of the initial missed diagnosis was the result of the reduced sensitivity of the transducer due to a partially delaminated lens identified through a FirstCall probe test. Because transducer defects can sometimes evolve slowly it can often be difficult for the sonographer to recognize when a transducer is working improperly, pointing to a need for periodic transducer testing in the clinical setting. The costs of not doing so are just too high. ©2010 Unisyn Medical Technologies, Inc. The clinical consequence of using these probes is that a correct diagnosis may be compromised.
