By any measure, there was less club riding this year compared to the previous 3 years. Hopefully we will have better weather next season. From the 435 people who did at least 1 ride last year, 193 did not ride this year. Many of the 193 were members who dropped out this year, but it also includes visitors and other non-members. This is similar to last year. There were 233 new riders this year who didn’t ride last year. Many of the 233 are new members, but again it also includes visitors and other non-members. This is up significantly over last year. Riders with illegible names on the log sheets accounted for 428 miles. Most of these were non-members. The final individual ride stats were reported on the website in mid-December and can still be accessed there. The table below summarizes the 2013 club riding stats. At just under 116,000 total miles, the RBC could have criss-crossed the country 34 times in an imaginary relay ride. A draft of the calendar will be available on the website. The jerseys were also available for sale. After our fill of pizza and desserts Whitey brought the meeting to order. It was announced that the Winter Meeting is tentatively scheduled for Feb 22nd, although more presenters are desired. More details will follow in the January newsletter and on the website. Brad, filling in for Cindy, gave the Membership Report. The 2013 season ended with 641 members, consisting of 444 individual memberships and 126 family memberships. The significant increase in membership over last year was attributed at least partially to the new website and ability to join, renew and pay on-line. Over 85% of members joined or renewed on-line. 110 members had done at least one volunteer activity over the past year. 71 CDs were distributed, with the rest of the membership electing either to download the CD content from the website or use the website directly. Dave gave the Treasurer’s Report. The fiscal year ended with $12,886 in income, which included $10,890 in membership income and $1,284 in jersey sales. Major expense items were the Volunteer dinner, insurance, printing and the website. The year ended with $7,508 in our checking account and $19,957 in our investment account. Whitey introduced the board members who are stepping down and they were given a round of applause for their work. The new slate of board members was then introduced by Whitey. No additional nominations came from the floor. A motion was made and seconded to approve the slate and the vote to approve was unanimous. The minutes from the September board meeting were approved. Committee/Officer/Director Reports: Cindy Fleischer, Membership: 20 new members joined in September, 16 new members joined in October. No renewals either month. Dave Natrop, Treasurer: $7849.34 balance in Key Bank. Dave noted some specific income and payments, all typical for this rather quiet time of year for the club. Nothing new in the investment account, interest due in October and will be reported at the next BOD meeting. Brad Jensen, website: 61 people have registered so far for the volunteer dinner. Brad reported he will send out another reminder within the next week. He expects attendance at the Volunteer Dinner to be what it usually is. There was some conversation about the forms Brad wrote for the website for the dinner registration. While most present believed they were easy to follow he will be simplifying them. Dale Vanocker, newsletter: Requested the full slate of 2014 BOD nominees to publish in the November newsletter. All Members will then have access to the information prior to the mid-November Election/pizza meeting. Nominee names will also be published on the website. Andy Stewart, Ride of Silence: election details. Thank you notes have been sent. Andy will be handling the pizza party/ Richard DeSarra, Advocacy: Lots of great, creative, low cost improvements are being made for cycle traffic in and around Rochester. Bob Cooper and Richard attended a public meeting with Rochester Chief of Police. The Chief is going to appoint an officer to lead the bike patrol unit. The officer will serve as the Rochester Cycling Alliance (RCA) & RBC liaison. The Chief indicated there will be more education for the police regarding the new cycling infrastructure (green lanes, bike boxes, sharrows). Green lanes are used extensively in Portland, Austin, Boulder, etc. The green lanes fall under the perusal of the NYS DOT and are being tested in NYS. There are several in the City of Rochester now and there will be up to a dozen more by the end of 2014. There is the problem that many cyclists and motorists currently aren't sure how to regard or use these road markings. The City of Rochester is looking for grant money to educate the public. Here's a video demonstrating the promotion and use of the bike box in Portland, OR and how it helps prevent the right turn "hook" cut-off of cyclists by cars Continued on the next page >>> 8 www.rochesterbicyclingclub.org in intersections: http://www.streetfilms.org/portland-green-bike-box/ and another in print: http://iamtraffic.org/ glossary/bike-box/ Here's information about Sharrows: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4CvvT_Y-Rbo The Governor's Traffic Safety Coalition awarded a grant to NYBC to work on an educational program for police on rules of the road for both cyclists and motorists. Albany and Rochester will be the first two cities in NYS to be offered training programs. Bike sharing may be coming to Rochester. A feasibility study is being conducted by the Genesee Transportation Council. Additionally, the City of Rochester is doing a study on Bicycle Boulevard routes. These include street signs to indicate alternate neighborhood street routes, thereby directing cyclists off high volume streets and away from dangerous intersections. New business: Volunteer Dinner: A list of jobs for Vol. Dinner has been circulated among BOD members. Contact Whitey if you do not like your assignment. Whitey has bought the majority of the Volunteer Dinner raffle prizes, most of which have been at least partially donated. At least $400 value of prizes will be raffled off to members. Voting BOD members are not eligible to win. Bike Case Purchase: Harvey Botzman has requested the RBC buy a soft bike bag to help demonstrate transporting bikes on trains, which is now allowed by Amtrak. RBC would own the bag. $300 has been brought in for rental fees for the current RBC hard case bike cases over the past three years. Discussion about whether we should buy the bike bag followed. It was moved and seconded that RBC spend a maximum of $200 to buy a new soft bike bag. The motion passed unanimously. New Officer nominees: Mark Robbins - Vice President Bill Crowe - Secretary Scott Wagner - Education Mark Robbins - Publicity New Member at Large nominees: Elaine Mizzoni Mike Harris Bike Safety Signs: Bob Lechner noted that a motorcycle coalition of some sort and an official government body work together to distribute the "Look Twice for Motorcycles" signs. Why not for bicyclists? Or safety billboards in May encouraging motorists to watch for bicyclists? Richard DeSarra mentioned that there is a small sum of money in RCA and that such an awareness campaign may dovetail well with the 2014 Bicycle Week which was initiated in 2013 by Scott Wagner. Perhaps RCA would work with RBC and approach a sponsor to get a similar awareness program going for bicyclists. Bob Lechner and Richard DeSarra will investigate. RBC Brochures: It was gratefully acknowledged that Dana Black has volunteered to coordinate production of the RBC brochures next year. MEETING ADJOURNED 7:55 PM Next Meeting: The next board meeting will be held at 7PM on Nov. 3, 2013. Respectfully submitted, Cindy Fleischer 9 www.rochesterbicyclingclub.org RBC Board Meeting Minutes: 11/3/2013 Present: Present: Whitey Link, Mark Robbins, Richard DeSarra, Brad Jensen, Bob Cooper, Dave Natrop, Tammy Grossman, Bob Lechner, Cindy Fleischer, Andy Stewart, Dana Black, Joe Voelkel, Dale Vanocker Guest: Elaine Mizzoni Meeting called to order at 7:00PM. Approval of minutes for 10/6/2013 Board Mtg: Meeting Minutes Approved. Volunteer Dinner: Brad reported 2 comments from this year’s volunteer dinner. One person suggested including salt potatoes on the menu and another suggested having wet wipes available (for the bbq chicken). Board members present commented positively about the prizes that were made available this year. Memberships: Cindy reported 4 memberships during October, including 1 family membership. Treasurer’s Report: Current account balance is $7617.51. Primary expenditure for the past month was for our Volunteer Dinner ($1412.13). Dave shared a report drafted for distribution at the November showing income and spending, by category, during the past several years. Cindy asked a question about our club’s financial support of National and State Cycling organizations. Discussion ensued. RBC has historically made contributions to League of American Bicyclists, New York Bike Coalition and Adventure Cycling. It was noted that these organizations play a significant role in advocating for legislation and funding around issues that are important to bicyclists. Our total financial support for these organizations comes to approximately $1000.00 annually. It was further noted that all such contributions occur only after board approval. Website: Brad mentioned that after the Nov. election he will update Board membership list on the website. Brad and Cindy will review some of the automatic emails pertaining to membership and “tweak” the process, as appropriate. Newsletter: Dale shared that the deadline for the January Feb. newsletter is Dec. 15. Rides: Rides are ongoing with good attendance at some of the recent colder weather rides. Noted that development of the 2014 ride calendar is ongoing with several members volunteering to lead 2014 rides at the Volunteer Dinner. Continued on the next page >>> 10 www.rochesterbicyclingclub.org Advocacy: Richard reported that the feasibility study for Rochester’s bike sharing program is getting underway. The study will be conducted by the Toole Design Group. Jerseys: Mark reported sale of one new jersey during the past month (at Vol. Dinner). Richard reported selling 3 of the older jerseys this past month. Richard added that five remain and that all are uncommon sizes. Publicity: Publicity chair to contact all LBS’s this month to ascertain their wishes with regard to club discounts. Tammy mentioned that there are three new LBS’s in the area: Cyclepath Bikes in Genesseo, Yellow Haus in downtown Rochester, and Rochester Fitness and Cycling on Panorama Trail. Maps: Ginn was unable to attend the meeting but offered the following input via email: “I received 2 revisions from Karen M. at the "volunteer's dinner"; map 101 and 134. They will be added to the "to do list" that I have for new maps and revisions.” Annual Meeting/Pizza Party: Briefly discussed. Brad reminded the group that minutes should be taken. Mark indicated that he will not be able to make the meeting and so another member would need to serve as minute taker. Elaine volunteered to get the Club Jerseys from Mark and bring these to the Annual meeting for sale there. Winter Meeting/Media Presentation: Whitey will contact Brian with regard to planning for this event. Meeting Day: Whitey reported on the survey conducted as to board members’ preferences as to meeting day. Based on survey results we will continue to hold our Board Meetings on Sundays. Awards Banquet: The 2014 Awards Banquet will take place on March 15th. WXXI Auction: Whitey indicated that he will contact Karen as to procedure for donation of items to WXXI’s silent auction. Adopt a Highway: The board recommended that RBC maintain its involvement in the Adopt a Highway program. Bike Safety Signage: Bob L. indicated he will be researching types of signs that might be available and will report back to the board. Rochester Regional Center for Design Award: Noted that Rich Desarra will be this years RRCD Betty Strasenburgh Award in honor of his 40 years of cycling advocacy. The award ceremony will take place on Dec. 5th, from 11:45am - 1:30pm. Board and Club members are encouraged to attend. Cindy made a motion that the club purchase tickets for two members to attend the luncheon which are $50 each -- for a total of $100. The motion passed unanimously. Printed Materials: Mark shared information on the remaining inventory of publicity materials. He will summarize current inventory and share with Bd. Members via email. Update to discussion of Lifetime Membership at Sept., 2013 Board Meeting: Subsequent to the Sept. Mtg. Brad emailed Board Members indicating that, based on criteria recommended by Bd. Members at the Sept. Meeting and reviewing the membership against such criteria, he’d not be proposing any new Life Memberships this year. Next Meeting: The next board meeting will be held at 7PM on Dec. 8th.
