But a little recognition from time to time is nice, too.” His wife and creative partner Annegret Morf agrees. “We’re trying to strike a balance between one of a kind and collected pieces,” she adds. “There’s a good market for quality $100 pieces, as well as for the pieces that cost many thousands.” Serafino’s new, colourful Puntata Collection offers jewelry lovers a series of hand-crafted “modern art” ring and earring designs, with other creations to follow. The Puntata rings feature sterling silver and 14K yellow gold shanks in unusual “circle-triangle” shapes. Distinctive details (on both rings and earrings) include jutting prongs, set with a rainbow variety of stones in dominant and supporting roles: amethysts, blue topazes, citrines, sapphires and tsavorite garnets. The name “Puntata” is an Italian word. Its meanings include a poke, a pointed remark, a bid in a bet, and a wink or flirtation, in the sense of the eye contact and intention that precedes an approach. In 2009, the 54th annual Salon des métiers d’art du Québec (SMAQ) has selected Serafino for its juried exhibit “Coup de cœur du public,” or People’s Choice Award competition. Serafino is one of the 20 competitors chosen from 450 Salon exhibitors for this exclusive competition, voted on by Salon visitors. Acknowledged as the biggest professional craft show and sale in North America, the SMAQ takes place 4-22 December 2009 at Montreal’s Place Bonaventure. Salon organizers expect over 240,000 visitors this year. Annegret and Antonio would love to meet you at their booth #504. Speak to Annegret Morf and Antonio Serafino @ 514 685 7114. Serafino is one of the 20 competitors the Salon jury chose for the exhibit out of the 450 exhibitors participating in the SMAQ, the biggest professional craft show and sale in North America. Hand-crafted in 14K yellow gold, the Via Lactea necklace features white freshwater Keshi pearls in striking organic star-like shapes. The overall effect is of a refined modern jewelry classic with just a hint of wildness. The Keshi pearls subtly follow the wearer’s movements, showing off their soft iridescent sheen like snowflakes slowly turning in the wind, or the ever-changing “Via Lactea,” the Latin name for “Milky Way.” You can see Via Lactea up close, and vote for it, at the “Coup de cœur du public” exhibit at the SMAQ in Montreal’s Place Bonaventure, 4-22 December 2009. The couple relocated from Italy where Serafino trained as a master goldsmith and worked for 15 years studying gemology and stone setting techniques. Despite launching Serafino in 1999, it wasn’t until 2005 when Morf joined her husband at the business fulltime, that their business blossomed, putting their unique heirloom quality jewelry on the fashion radar. Serafino features three collections, “Pallino”, whose pieces boast spherical designs and bright gemstones, “Freevola” showcases hammered silver disks with inlaid stones, and “Chikeshi”, where the unique and irregularly shaped keshi pearls dominate the pieces. In addition to the collections, Serafino also specializes in one-of-a-kind custom orders, diamond and pearl pieces, and wedding jewelry. -Jessalynn Keller Photos: Maxim Demers and Serafino
