[email protected] Introduction to UM Integrating Spheres Modular Configurable Concept from Base Sphere to Complete Test System Gigahertz-Optik’s UM* series integrating spheres and accessories (sphere components) offer one of the most extensive integrating sphere and IS integrating sphere system programs available. The modular design concept allows integrating spheres to be set-up according to the customer’s own application specifications and budget requirements. Our integrating spheres are built to order from stock standard components using an efficient cost effective production process. Custom modifications of standard components, custom design components and complete system setups are offered. * the Ulbrichtsche Kugel (Integrating Sphere) is named for the designing engineer Richard Ulbricht (1849 to 1923). M stands for Modular concept UMBB-150 in Custom Design Set-up Modular Configurable Integrating Spheres Gigahertz-Optik stocks a selection of hemispheres in different diameters to set up UM integrating spheres. The two hemispheres form a UMB base integrating sphere. The base spheres are configured with sphere components which mount onto the sphere. Once the UM sphere is configured port adapters and sphere accessories can be mounted onto the port frame(s). UMB Base Sphere UMPF Port Frame UMDP Detector Port UMPB Port Baffle UMSS Sphere Stand UMPR Reducer, VL-1101 Detector Set-up Criteria for Integrating Spheres There are three main application groups for integrating spheres: Integrating Sphere Detectors (ISD) Integrating Sphere Sources (ISS) Integrating Spheres for Optical Properties of Materials (ISMP) [email protected] Set-up Criteria for Integrating Sphere Detectors (ISD) Light measurement is the primary integrating sphere application. Light emitted in different directions or over a wide dispersion angle is internally integrated within the sphere for detection. The port and baffle layout must be designed so that no direct illumination of the light detector by the test sample or light entering the sphere (calibration source) occurs. Typical integrating sphere designs for total flux measurement of light sources include: 1. Integrating sphere for sources that emit light in all directions (4π) include a lamp holder for positioning and operating the test lamp in the center of the sphere. A post-mount baffle is set in front of the light detector to avoid direct irradiation of the detector by the test source. A diffuse window with wide field-of-view is installed in front of the detector for complete integration of reflected light from the total sphere surface. An auxiliary lamp supports the correction of any self-absorption (substitution) error due to the test sample lamp and its housing. 2. For collimated or low divergence spot (beam emitting) lamps, fiber light guide output and lasers the integrating spheres are designed with an application port in the sphere wall enabling operation of the source outside the sphere. A baffle is not needed if the detector is not directly illuminated by the test source. The light detector must employ a diffuser window to reduce hot-spot detection effects by the collimated beam. 3. For integrating spheres measuring hemispherical emitting sources (2π), like LEDs without a lens, the light detector must be baffled against direct illumination by the test source from the application port. Test Source [email protected] Set-up Criteria for Integrating Sphere Sources (ISS) The second main application for integrating spheres are integrating sphere light sources offering a uniform light output with a hemispherical emission characteristic. These spheres are also called Uniform Light Sources. One of the main design criteria for integrating sphere light sources is the selection of the light source: 1. Integrating sphere sources that employ all directional lamps (4π) such as halogen lamps provide the highest level light output when the lamp(s) are mounted inside the sphere. This is because all of the lamp’s flux is integrated by the sphere. Intensity control is achieved in steps by switching lamps on and off. 2. For variable intensity control of lamps that cannot be intensity controlled by adjustment of electrical power (halogen lamps, arc lamps) the lamp needs to be externally mounted onto the sphere so that a variable aperture or hole pattern attenuator between sphere and lamp can be used to control the level of flux entering the sphere. The flux level of 4π lamps entering the sphere can be increased using reflectors. 3. Integrating sphere sources employing LEDs offer intensity control in steps (on-off) and variable output intensities through electrical power control. Light Output Port [email protected] Set-up Criteria for Integrating Spheres for Optical Properties of Materials (ISMP) The third main application of integrating spheres is the measurement of optical properties of materials such as reflectance, transmittance, absorbance, fluorescence, photoluminescence and others. All of these types of measurements use light as the reference signal. Typical Set-ups with collimated light sources are: 1. Reflectance: Integrating sphere with sample port and collimated light source for sample irradiation through the sphere. Measurement of total reflectance or diffuse reflectance with open port for regular reflected light. 2. Transmittance: Integrating sphere with sample port and collimated light source for sample irradiation opposite to the sample port. Measurement of total transmittance or diffuse transmittance with open port for regular transmitted light. 3. Absorbance, Fluorescence: Integrating sphere with sample holder mounted in the sphere center. Through port illumination of the test sample with collimated light source (or laser). Measurement of absorbance by calculating the ratio of signal with and without test sample. The sphere inner UMBB Integrating Spheres in Custom Design Set-up surface is coated with barium sulfate a highly diffuse reflective coating. The spheres are stocked in semi-finished form in different sizes. Sphere Diameters from 100 (4”) to 1000mm (20”) Gigahertz-Optik supplies the UM base integrating spheres from 100mm up to 1000mm in diameter. Barium Sulfate Coating For larger size integrating spheres Barium Sulfate is the most cost effective coating. Gigahertz-Optik manufactures it’s own ODP97 coating which is characterized by wide angle diffuse reflection, uniform spectral reflection and high reflectivity. The coating is applied in a process with several thin layers air sprayed. The ODP97 coating is also available as stand alone product described in Optical Diffuse Material. Wide Range of Integrating Sphere Components for Integrating Sphere Configuration Gigahertz-Optik stocks a wide range of sphere components for assembly onto the base integrating sphere. Sphere components supplied include post mount sockets, flange mounts, stands, port frames, port frame accessories, detector ports and port baffles. Once the sphere layout is finalized it can be configured with additional accessories to complete the measurement system. Port adapters, light sources, sample holder and other accessories are described in Light Measurement System Components. Integrating Sphere Detectors and Light Meters One of the most common use of integrating spheres is in light measurement application. With Gigahertz-Optik’s lightmeters integrating sphere detectors can be individually formed. Standard integrating sphere detectors and light meters are described in Measurement of Light. Integrating Sphere Light Sources The second common use of integrating sphere is as integrating sphere light sources for uniformity calibration and comparison of imaging systems. Gigahertz-Optik’s integrating sphere sources are described in Light Measurement Standards and Services. Sphere Socket for Post Mount The UMSS-SM14/M6 socket enables Gigahertz-Optik integrating spheres to mount onto post type stands with M6 threaded stud, for example Gigahertz-Optik’s PMS series. The post mount socket is not recommended for use with large size and heavy weighed spheres. Synthetic Diffuse Reflecting Coating with High Reflection The synthetic ODM98 coating is a nearly perfect diffuse reflective coating combine with high resistance against high density UV to NIR optical radiation. Because of the light permeability of ODM98 optical radiation is reflected within the material itself which requires a minimum thickness of the synthetic material for its high reflectance. The thickness of the ODM98 coating of UMBK and UMTK integrating spheres is typically 10mm. Machined Ports with Knife Edge Machining of UMMP Port for use with Protection Cap Knife edge design ports prevent stray light from bouncing off the port edge and entering the sphere. The sharpest knife edge is achieved using machined ports without an internal step. The knife edge angle at ODM98 coated spheres is limited by the ODM98 material thickness. Detector Ports for 37 and 45 type Detectors UMPF-0.5 plus UMPA-0.5/11 Gigahertz-Optik’s light detectors in 37 and 45 type housing can be mounted to integrating spheres using the UMDP-37 and UMDP-45 detector ports. Detector Ports with Baffle The freedom in design for ODM98 coated baffles is limited by the light permeability of this material which requires a minimum thickness for it’s high reflectance. Because of that Gigahertz-Optik has developed a unique sandwich port baffle design with metal shielding between the two ODM98 layers. The UMPB-ZB port baffles are supplied with UMPF-0.5 and UMPF1.0 port frame interfaces allowing the mount of UMPA0.5 and UMPA-1.0 port adapters to mount light meters and fiber bundles. The ports should be arranged so that no light from any other port or light source inside the sphere can reach the port directly without multiple reflections. In practice this is not always possible so baffles between ports and between light sources and ports are used to avoid direct illumination. Port Baffles with Synthetic ODM98 Coating The freedom in design for ODM98 coated baffles is limited by the light permeability of this material which requires a minimum thickness for it’s high reflectance. Because of that Gigahertz-Optik has developed a unique sandwich port baffle design with metal shielding between two ODM98 layers.
