Jason Dove - Morphius Records
Jason Dove Pronto Weathering the aftermath of, well, Math Rock has not been easy for most veterans of the late-90’s indie staple genre. Jason Dove has risen above the miasma of bizarre and often embarrassing post-math projects by nationally known artists to create an experimental rock offering that is as personal and genuine as one could hope for in today’s “flavor of the week” indie rock landscape. Born in Norfolk, VA in 1976, Dove began exhibiting his musical talents at age 12 and was playing out in various bands by age 15. His longest stint was with Atlanta’s critically acclaimed, Plexorjet, known for defying genre definitions with their math infused spaced-out power jams. While they utilized intricate atonal chord progressions and the complex time-changing percussion stylings of bands like Polvo, Unwound, and Rodan, Plexorjet added a generous helping of art-rock styled jams a la Zeppelin and was awarded “Best 7’’ of the Year”, in 1998, by Punk Planet. They also had several songs featured on MTV’s Road Rules vs. The Real World: Battle of The Sexes and Road Rules: Season 3. Becoming despondent over conforming to the regimented expectations of indie rock in the late 90’s, Dove formed Slot Racer in 1998 to collaborate with friends Edward Rawls (bass) and Michael Griffeth (drums) in the hopes of creating an outlet to explore his childhood rock influences (The Beatles, Buddy Holly, Led Zeppelin) away from the jaded attitudes that reined king in late 90’s Indie. Slot Racer made a creative departure from the post-rock limitations of Plexorjet. Not concerned with the popular notions of contemporary rock outfits, Dove treated the band as an exercise in musical collage, garnering influences from the pantheon of classic rock gods. Most notable among these was his appropriation of Elvis Costello’s “picked last for the team” playground pathos-infused vocals, which Dove masterfully contrasted with Buddy Holly’s relentlessly upbeat guitar tone. continued on back Distributed Exclusively Worldwide by Morphius Records, Inc. 100 E. 23rd Street, Baltimore, MD 21218 [email protected] www.morphius.com 410-662-0112 410-662-0116 fax Publicity: Simeon Walunas [email protected] 410-662-0112 Monday-Friday, 10-6pm Jason Dove Pronto continued from front The release of Early Years 1998-2001 compiled Slot Racer recordings, demos and live tracks that spanned the first three years of of the band, and included the first two out of print Slot Racer EPs, as well as rare live tracks recorded in Atlanta from 2001. Changing gears again, Dove relocated to Baltimore, Maryland in 2003 and constructed a new lineup after recording the material for Pronto (Carbon & Monoxide) with original members Brett Jones and Michael Griffeth in Atlanta. Dove chose to drop the name Slot Racer, partly as a response to the critical acclaim of his solo performances.
