Olympic Tradition Unlike Any Other
The Carolina Olympic tradition has existed for more than
70 years. Harry Williamson was the first Tar Heel Olympian,
competing in the 800 meters at the 1936 Berlin Games. Though
overshadowed by Olympic teammate Jesse Owens that year, Williamson finished sixth and gave birth to what would fast become
a rich and storied history.
Four years later, Floyd “Chunk” Simmons became the first
Carolina track medalist, taking bronze in the decathlon. In Helsinki in 1952, Simmons again won bronze, as American decathletes swept the competition for the “World’s Greatest Athlete”.
Despite the abundance of great athletes who called Chapel
Hill home over the next four decades, it would be 44 years before
a Tar Heel brought an Olympic medal back to UNC. In 1996,
Allen Johnson triumphed in the 110-meter hurdles, setting off
what would become the “golden” age for Carolina athletes in the
Olympics.

Carolina’s International Connections
Much of the Olympic success connected to former Carolina track athletes has
occured under the flag of the United States.
In fact, all six medalists have won while
competing for
the American
team. However, UNC
has produced
a number of
Olympians
that have
proudly represented other
nations.
The 1996
Atlanta Games
featured two
international
stars - Eddie
Neufville of
Liberia and
Ken Harnden
of Zimbabwe.
Neufville
competed
in the 400Nadine Faustin-Parker
meter relay,
while Harnden ran the 400-meter hurdles,
an event in which he won the NCAA title
while at Carolina. Dominic Demeritte of
the Bahamas and Nadine Faustin joined
Neufville and Harnden at the 2000 Sydney
Games. They ran in the 200 and 100-meter
hurdles, respectively. One of the biggest
moments in Demeritte’s career came when
he was crowned the 2004 Indoor World
Champion in the 200 in Budapest. Faustin,
the national record holder in five different events for the Republic of Haiti, was
crowned the Central America and Caribbean Games gold medal
winner in the 100-meter hurdles in 2005.
Both Demeritte and Faustin competed in the 2004 Olympic
Games where Faustin advanced to the semi-finals in the 100meter hurdles and Demerite advanced to the quarter-finals in the
200. Faustin also competed in the 2008 Beijing Games. Another
Tar Heel, Vikas Gowda, competed in the Olympics while still in
school. Gowda, then a junior at Carolina, competed in the discus
for his home nation of India.

Hall of Honor
When excellence abounds, it can be all too easy for the glory of the past to
slip away amid the brilliance of the present. The brand new Track and Field
Hall of Honor (pictured above), however, ensures that such a fate will never
befall the many Tar Heel track and field greats who have made their mark on
the sport while donning Carolina Blue. Housed on the third floor of the Eddie
Smith Field House, the hall pays tribute to the myriad of accomplishments of
past UNC teams and athletes via a remarkable setup of trophy cases, displays,
exhibits and photos.
While special recognition is given to standout teams as well as those UNC
athletes who earned All-America honors, competed internationally, or won
NCAA Championships, the hall also shows a deep acknowledgement and appreciation of the contributions of all the athletes who have helped take the Carolina track and field program to the echelons of the elite. More than anything, the
hall makes clear the immutable truth that all the accomplishments achieved at
UNC in the past will forever intersect with the paths of all athletes who choose
to come to Chapel Hill.
The North Carolina track and field staff itself gives further and absolute
testament to that intersection as it features a trio of all-time greats who are still
giving back to the University. Pictured at right are 2006 national champions
Laura Gerraughty -- who also won both shot puts in 2004 -- and Vikas Gowda.
Gerraughty was the assistant throws coach and Gowda was a volunteer coach
in 2009. Nadine Faustin (now Faustin-Parker) returned in 2007 to take over for
former Carolina great Kendra Warren who became the head coach at Virignia
Commonwealth. Faustin-Parker will oversee all of the athletics adminstration
aspects of the Carolina track and field teams. Just like the legendary athletes
that reside in the new hall of honor, these standouts have left collegiate competition – but they will never cease to leave their mark of excellence on UNC.
