fashionable a profile as Brighton Collectibles in Thousand Oaks. Brighton
is known for designing products with
a message and carries elegant belts,
handbags, watches, and more.
In support of National Breast
Cancer Awareness Month, Brighton
engaged in a Power of Pink promotion.
The local designee for the funds was a
handsome choice as well, Livingston
Memorial Visiting Nurse Association.
Lovely designer bracelets and
charms were sold with a generous portion of the proceeds donated to Livingston. The promotion was so popular
the merchandise sold out, generating
$2,106 worth of donations.

Giving Opportunities
he community supports Livingston for various
reasons. For many, providing home healthcare for
the sick, handicapped, elderly and homebound resonates with their own values and so they support our mission.
They believe, as do we, that taking care of the underinsured
and uninsured regardless of their ability to pay makes Ventura County a kinder and more caring place to live.
Many of our foundation and government funders are
interested in insuring certain disadvantaged types of people
or residents within a specific city. For example, we partner
with the cities of Oxnard, Thousand Oaks, Ventura, and
Westlake Village to make sure their citizens get the vital
care they need to live healthy lives. The Women’s Legacy
fund insures there are funds to care for indigent women
throughout Ventura County.
Livingston events are no exception; they too provide
supporters with personally fulfilling opportunities to give.
Our 5th Annual Mother’s Day Luncheon, see next page for
details, offers many options to support Livingston. Some
people will give in recognition of the honorees. Some will
give because they like being a part of the Livingston social
community. Some will give in order to honor their own
mothers. Everyone has their own reasons for giving. We try
to provide opportunities that meet the needs of our donors
and are congruent with our mission.
“Thank yous” are another matter. We are tremendously
grateful and appreciative of every donor regardless of gift
amount. On page 7 begins a list of all our 2010 donors. We
hope we’ve done a good job meeting your needs and thank
you for your continued commitment.

Livingston Memorial VNA Health Corporation and Livingston Memorial
Visiting Nurse Association recognize the growing need to provide services in
the home environment for the sick, handicapped, elderly and homebound.
As community-supported, nonprofit organizations, they strive to provide
professional, licensed and supportive home health and hospice care services
of the highest quality in the most cost effective manner to the people of
Ventura County to ensure a positive patient outcome.
LMVNA explores and develops health-related programs based upon
community need and acceptance, economic viability, and availability of
resources to provide services.
LMVNA is sensitive to the financial circumstances of its patients and provides
needed services, including those at reduced or no charge to indigent patients,
based upon the available resources for the organization.
The Livingston Memorial VNA Health Corporation is the parent organization
of Livingston Memorial Visiting Nurse Association and Gold Coast CareGivers.
Livingston Memorial Visiting Nurse Association is licensed by the State of
California, certified by Medicare and Medi-Cal, and is accredited by The Joint
Commission.
Joint Commission accreditation is regarded as the
most comprehensive review of patient safety and
quality efforts in the industry. Accredited home health
organizations have fewer readmits to the hospital after
an episode of care.

Leadership giving not
new to loyal donor
D
onor Mark Schwartz recently recounted
his experience of losing his mother and
the genesis of his strong connection to
Livingston Hospice. “When my mother died in 1993,
I flew 2,000 miles to Minnesota, rented a car, drove 30
minutes to the hospital (missing an exit along the way),
and made it 15 minutes before she passed. The nurses
said she likely was waiting for me to get there. Losing a
loved one is never easy, but that memory will stay with
me forever.”
Mark has been giving at the Distinguished Donor
level, annual giving of $1,000 or more, since 1998,
nearly a decade before the agency established a
Distinguished Donor program. He’s had Livingston in
his estate plans for nearly as long. In this year’s annual
report Mark will be counted among the inaugural
members of Livingston’s Legacy Society. Thanks for
waiting on us to catch up Mark!

caring and kindness
P
roviding care for those in need is not an easy task.
Medical expenses continue to climb. The numbers of
unemployed and uninsured remain stubbornly high.
Meeting this double ended challenge requires cooperation and
compassion. The Livingston-St. John’s hospitals’ relationship is
built on that foundation.
Last year St. John’s discharged 81 subsidized care patients to
Livingston’s home healthcare. Livingston provided approximately
$72,900 of home healthcare or an average of $900 per patient.
St. John’s recognizes that the continuum of care between
hospital and home is crucial to producing positive patient
outcomes. In 2010 Livingston reduced its acute care
hospitalizations to a rate of 12.83%, well below the benchmark
national rate of 24.18% and increased patient satisfaction from 78
to 84%.
St. John’s partners with Livingston in many ways. Their
financial support of the County’s only non-profit provider of
home healthcare is crucial to the care of our shared patients. We
thank St. John’s for joining us in caring for the indigent and for
their generosity of spirit and funding.

ivingston volunteers make every season a season
of caring. Every fall we recognize volunteers for
their hard work and commitment to the mission of
providing quality home health and compassionate
hospice care to the people of Ventura County.
In November Marc Bobonic was recognized as
“Volunteer of the Year” for 2010. Marc has been
a hospice volunteer for many years and is a vital
member of the Light Up A Life team. A big hug and
thank you to all Livingston volunteers!

Livingston Lights up Lives

L
ivingston’s Light Up A Life celebrates the warmth and spirit of
the holiday season. Light Up increases awareness and raises crucial
funds, over $50,000 last year, for Livingston Hospice. Donations ensure
that all terminally ill patients living in Ventura County have access to
compassionate care that leads to a better quality of life, at the end of life.
The 26th annual event was hosted at the Pacific View Mall in Ventura with
friends, family and holiday shoppers.

Dear Ana and Gold Coast Caregivers,
My mom, June Baker, and I would like to thank
you.
As mom’s full-time caregiver since her stroke 4 years
ago, I wanted to thank each of you for your kindness to
my mother and me.
We appreciate the help with mom’s showers and
making it possible for me to get out to get groceries.
We appreciate how Lynne has created such a caring,
conscientious organization and has chosen such a
warm, devoted staff.
Vicki and Annalyn bring such warmth, caring and
sunshine to my mother’s life and we are very thankful to
have chosen Gold Coast Caregivers.
