PARIS low budget
In Paris, you don’t need to be rich to have a good time. On the contrary! There
are many free or cheap things to do. Everything can be done on a small
budget, whether it’s shopping, gastronomy, accommodation, sport or culture.
You can discover new bands in bars, meet artists in their studios, visit the
permanent collections of the major national museums; you can get a haircut,
a makeover, a massage or buy famous designer clothes all without spending
a fortune. Thank you Paris!
GOING OUT ON A BUDGET
> Exceptional cultural events throughout the year
Music lovers, the inquisitively-minded and art buffs have plenty of opportunities to enjoy free artistic events in
the capital, such as Nuit Blanche (Cultural all-nighter), the Fête de la Musique and the Journées du Patrimoine
(Heritage Days). Paris was the first city to develop a special night time event devoted to contemporary art – Nuit
Blanche. The event was so successful that it soon spread to Rome, Brussels, Amsterdam, and even as far afield
as Toronto. In Paris, this event takes place on the first Saturday of October. Visual artists are selected by a panel
of contemporary arts specialists and install their art work throughout the city, in the open air and in the unusual
venues specially chosen for the occasion. These installations, sculptures, videos and screenings can be viewed
from 7pm to 7am and there are various arts itineraries or themed routes in different parts of the city. Another
all-night event takes place every year on 21 June when the entire city of Paris takes to the streets to celebrate
music. Groups, singers and collectives crowd the streets and certain areas are fully pedestrianized for the event.
With public transport running all night, the event could be compared to New Year’s Eve celebrations, the only
difference being the summer weather. Lots of Parisians participate in these occasions: groups of friends and
family meet and catch up, adding to the uniquely festive atmosphere. Finally, every year on the third weekend
of September, Paris’s historical buildings and prestigious public monuments, as well as private institutions, are
open free of charge to the public for the Journées du Patrimoine (Heritage Days). This is the ideal occasion to
visit the Presidential Palace, the Senate or even the sewers of Paris (Égouts de Paris)! However, bear in mind that
there may be very long queues for certain popular venues such as the Élysée.

> Summer time in Paris; fun and relaxing
During the months of July and August, many Parisians leave the city for the beaches, leaving a quieter, less
stressful city to be enjoyed almost exclusively by tourists and strollers. Kick-off is on 14 July (a public holiday):
the celebrations commemorate the storming of the Bastille by the French people and the beginning of democracy
and the birth of the French Republic. Why not enjoy a typical French occasion by spending Bastille Day in Paris?
Starting at 10am, there is a free military parade on the Champs-Élysées. The sight of the French airforce with
their trail of blue, white and red smoke is an impressive one. The celebrations continue into the early hours of
the morning with dances (bals populaires) at fire stations or barracks throughout the city. From 20 July to 20
August (approximately), a veritable seaside resort is established along the banks of the Seine with Paris-Plages
(Paris-Beaches). The banks are covered with sand, parasols and deck chairs. In 2011, over 3 million people took
advantage of the activities on offer at Paris’s beaches, from water aerobics to fencing to dance classes or simply
relaxed in the sun with a book borrowed from the on-site lending libraries.
In the north of the capital, cinema fans can enjoy open air cinema screenings of well-known films at the Parc de la
Villette (deck chairs and blankets can be rented on-site). All of the joys of holidays without ever leaving the capital!

Free concerts in churches
The majority of churches from small local chapels to the great cathedral of Notre-Dame offer free classical music
concerts to the public. A wide range of concerts are programmed all year round, on Sunday afternoon and in the
week, at midday, as for example at the Eglise de la Trinité on Thursday.

> Inexpensive concerts
A myriad of Parisian bars are an invitation to listen to new music groups (electro, jazz, rock, salsa, etc.) over a
drink without any entry fee. Lovers of classical music may be aware that the different stations of the Radio France
group regularly organize free concerts at the Maison de la Radio. The programme La Bande Passante on the
station, RFI, is exclusively devoted to live music and offers the public the chance to assist at the recording of its
shows. To attend these free, private mini-concerts at venues such as La Flèche d’Or or La Bellevilloise, tickets
can be collected one week prior to each recording at the Maison de la Radio. As for the Conservatoire national
supérieur de musique, near to La Villette, it holds free concerts (the Salons du lundi) given by students. Large
music stores like the Fnac organize showcases, private concerts with a limited number of spectators. These are
a great way to see popular bands (for free) promoting their latest album!

Free open air concerts!
From May to September, free concerts take place in park bandstands in Paris. All musical genres are represented,
from classical brass bands to electronic music. Pleasing to both the ears and the wallet, stroll around or take a
seat on the grass to listen to a few numbers!
Jazz concerts are held at the Parc Floral de Paris as part of the Paris Jazz Festival in June and July. With
affordable entrance prices ranging from €2.50 (for the under 25s) to €5, visitors can enjoy concerts by well-known
performers on the lawns or in the big tent in this very pleasant setting.

> Free films at the Forum des Images
Every day from 7.30pm the cinema at the Collections du Forum des Images offers free access to over 7,000 films,
on request. Cinema lovers can settle themselves on a sofa or in an alcove in the Grand Salon, or opt for the Petit
Amphi or one of the two Petits Salons which host up to 7 people. The private screening can then start; all viewers
have to do is choose from the wide range of short and feature-length films, fiction and documentaries, etc. The
Collection Parisienne focuses mainly on films that feature the capital, from that of the 1900 Universal Exhibition to
the Marie-Antoinette of Sofia Coppola. In 2012, the Forum pays tribute to the city of London with its London Calling
Festival. Perhaps the perfect opportunity to discover some cinematic gems.

> Cut-price theatre tickets
With more than 150 theatres, 122 concert halls and 31 café-theatres, Paris has a rich night-scene. Cut-price
ticket kiosques sell tickets at half price on the day of the performance. Anyone can buy a ticket regardless of age or
nationality. No advance bookings by telephone; you have to buy your tickets at the kiosque. Certain private theatres
also offer reductions on the first days of performances with the initiative « Soyez les premiers aux premières »
(“Be the first at the premières”), as well as for all young people under 26 years.

> Opera for everyone
Paris’s two opera houses are far from being reserved just for an elite public. Since 2005, it has been possible to
buy tickets for standing places at 5 euros! Under 28-year-olds benefit from reduced-cost tickets all year round.
(25 euros for an opera performance, 15 euros for dance or a « Frontières » show, 10 euros for a concert). They
should go to the ticket office of the opera house a quarter of an hour before the beginning of the performance.

> Free comedy shows
Do you want to discover up-and-coming comedians? Two Parisian theatres are specialized in stand-up comedy, a
genre originating in the United States, offering one man shows by new and emerging comedians. Alone on stage,
the stand-up comedian takes the mic to talk about current affairs, their personal life, and state of mind ... all
with practised, comical eloquence. Free of charge, these shows are performed with an applause metre for the
comedians! At the Entrepôt Cinema, improv events are held on the first Sunday of every month and are run by
the association Les Traits d’Union. The audience are guaranteed a lively show halfway between cafe-theatre and
comedy.

Free entry to national museums and monuments for under 26 year olds
From April 2009, entrance to national museum permenant collections and monuments is free for European Union
nationals under 26. This allows young Parisians and visitors in the capital to (re)discover places like the Musée du
Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay, the Arc de Triomphe, the Notre-Dame cathedral towers and any other things because
Paris has 14 national museums and 19 national monuments. All this to do without spending a thing!

Art in public places
In Paris, culture is not confined to museums; it can also be discovered outdoors. A tour of these outdoor spaces
will introduce you to the works of artists from all periods: the fountains of Niki de Saint Phalle near to the Centre
Pompidou, the « Kiosque des noctambules » by Jean-Michel Othoniel or the Buren columns at the Palais-Royal,
« Balzac » by Rodin on boulevard Raspail, the « Trois Nymphes » by Maillol at the Jardin des Tuileries, etc.
By following the T3 tramway route from pont du Garigliano to porte d’Ivry, nine contemporary art works can
be seen. These pieces were commissioned by the Paris City Council from artists Christian Boltanski, Angela
Bulloch, Sophie Calle, Frank O.Gehry, Didier, Fiuza Faustino, Dan Graham, Peter Kogler, Bertrand Lavier and
Claude Lévêque.

Highly practical, the Paris Museum Pass cuts out the queues and is a money saver. It costs 39 euros for two days,
54 euros for four days and 69 euros for six days and gives unlimited and free access to more than sixty museums

There is no better way to discover a piece of art than to have the artist present and explain it to you in person!
Artist workshop open days allow you to do this. In the Belleville, Ménilmontant and Buttes-aux-Cailles areas
artists open their doors to visitors at the weekend. Always a great experience for visitors, this is a fantastic way to
discover new talent. It’s like visiting a huge, free museum.

If you are visiting Paris from a country outside the European Union you can benefit from détaxe, prices without
taxes. All you have to do is fill in a form in the shop where you make your purchases, get it stamped at the airport
on your way home and return the form once you are home. Big stores and airports as well as some smaller shops
in the Opéra area offer duty free products, from which tax has already been deducted. Be aware that you must
present your passport and in some cases your plane ticket in order to benefit from this.

> Sales at any time
Since 1 January 2009, French law now allows shops to have two weeks of sales at any time of the year. Before
then, shops could have six weeks of sales a year on fixed dates. The law now allows five weeks of sales plus two
weeks of sales which can take place at the discretion of the shop. This means greater savings for shoppers!

> A budget outing in Jaurès
The areas around Jaurès-Stalingrad and the north of the 19th arrondissement are undergoing a facelift and
are fast becoming a multi-cultural, green and reasonably-priced destination attracting crowds of musicians,
designers and Parisian artists. The new generation youth hostel, Christopher’s Inn, opened in 2008, is the new
gathering place for young people. The hostel’s innovative architecture was designed by Chaix and Morel. At the
bar, Belushi’s, young people from all over the world exchange tips and recommendations with other tourists
visiting Paris and are often joined here in the evenings by locals, as well as at the Bellerive and the Péniche
Antipode along the quays of the Seine.
By day, it is possible to follow the Canal de l’Ourcq on Vélib’ as far as the Parc de la Villette, the Cité de la musique
and the bucolic and quintessentially Parisian market Jean-Jaurès. For an inexpensive cultural outing, head along
the canal by the rue Riquet and begin with Le CENTQUATRE. This recent cultural and creative centre in a former
funeral home has been renovated with style. The space holds workshops, fairs and exhibitions by the artists in
residence throughout the year, as well as an Emmaüs charity shop laid out like an apartment. There’s even a pizza
van if you’re feeling hungry! At lunchtime, follow the Quai de la Seine, bathed in afternoon sunshine and stroll
along the Canal Saint-Martin. The Point Ephémère, a concert hall with a bar and artist residency programmes
is the perfect place to start your stroll along the locks of the canal where there are plenty of playgrounds for
children to have fun. On your way, have a look at Arletty’s legendary Hôtel du Nord and wander around the pastelcoloured shops. When the sun sets, Parisians gather with their saucisson (sausage) and bottle of something for
an impromptu aperitif.

> Enjoy one of Paris’s most beautiful walks for next to nothing
Thanks to the Paris Respire (Paris Breathes) Project; the banks of the Seine are closed to traffic every Sunday
from 9am to 5pm and every day from mid-July to mid-August. You can enjoy a gentle stroll along the traffic-free
quays or the more energetic amongst us may prefer to use a bike, rollerblades or a scooter. The banks of the
Seine are one of the best viewing points from which to admire the city and its rich history. The city grew up along
the river and it is here that you can see some of its most beautiful buildings: from the Louvre to the Conciergerie
and the Musée d’Orsay to the Académie française. Why not rent a Vélib’ for an hour or two and admire the beauty
of Paris’s famous bridges? Starting at the Tuileries Gardens on the Right Bank, you will pass by the Louvre,
Pont-Neuf, the Hôtel de Ville and the Quai des Célestins. By then, you will have deserved a Berthillon ice cream
and a rest on the Pont-Marie. On the Left Bank, the riverbank stretches for 2.5 kms between the Pont Royal and
the Pont de l’Alma. This route will be entirely pedestrianized in 2013. Paris is becoming a more eco-friendly and
pedestrian-friendly city!

Free sports lessons
It’s good to play sport but when it’s free it’s even better! On Sunday mornings, gym lessons, organized by the
Paris City Council, take place in some of the capital’s parks. State qualified instructors give dynamic, hour-long
lessons for working out in the open air. The Attractive store also offers sports activities in the urban area around
the Forum des Halles or rue de Rennes, every Saturday from 11am to 12-noon. Lastly, the cultural establishment
