THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 18th 8:00 - 10:00 / FRIDA Workshop Creating Girl’s Early Interest in Science ORGANIZED BY Danièle Castle International Federation of University Women (IFUW) Martha Pérez Armendariz & Margarita Almada Federacion Mexicana de Universitarias (FEMU) [email protected], [email protected] There needs to be a concerted effort in recruitment, retention and promotion of women to the highest levels of science and technology. Countries must strengthen the links between education, science and the labor market, ensuring that gender stereotypes and bias are removed from classrooms. This seminar will explore the significance of girls’ early interest in science, on gender equity in science fields, and the factors that need to be put in place to improve the number of girls and women in science at all levels of education, employment and science innovation. 8:00 - 10:00 / CRISTAL Symposium 1 Gender Research in Developing and Developed Countries: Between Autonomy and Integration MODERATOR Rokhsana M. Ismail Woman’s Research & Training Center, Aden University, Yemen. [email protected] PARTICIPANTS Norma Blázquez (Mexico); Lilliam Álvarez (Cuba); Ahbor Dolly A. Ighore (Nigeria); Kaiser Jamil (India). Fifth International Conference Women Scientist in a Quest for Sustainability and Development 17-20 september 2014 14 Symposia, panel and workshop In this symposium the relation between gender research and the feminist movement in developing and developed countries will be discussed. Also the gender theory will be analyzed with special focus on the prospects of policy learning between regions and within regions. As an example the new trends in Middle Eastern gender studies and its application in the Arab region will be addressed, taking into consideration their own customs and traditions, levels of modernization and religious manifestations. 8:00 - 10:00 / SIQUEIROS Symposium 2 Neglected and Under Utilized Plants and Food Security MODERATOR Amanda Gálvez Facultad de Química, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México PARTICIPANTS Ngozika Okechukwu-Ezike & Nwosu J.N. (Federal University of Technology Owerri, Nigeria); Ricardo María Garibay Velasco (Mexico). In this symposium several examples of how these neglected and underutilized plants are utilized for food, preserved for increasing the storage life will be discussed, as well as strategies to use it to lessen food insecurity in rural areas. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 19th 8:00 - 10:00 / SIQUEIROS Symposium 3 Sustainable Energies MODERATOR Teresa Ponce Noyola CINVESTAV, Mexico PARTICIPANTS Savita Singal & Jyothi Prasad (India); Musaida Mercy Manyuchi (Zimbabwe); Deke Adegunloye, Ogunsuyi H.O. & Ikhuoria (EE. UU., Nigeria); Ma. Flor Morales & Myriam Amezcua (Mexico) Energy is central to sustainable development and poverty reduction efforts. It affects all aspects of development -- social, economic, and environmental -- including livelihoods, access to water, agricultural productivity, health, population levels, education, and gender-related issues. Access to sustainable sources of clean, reliable and affordable energy has a profound impact on multiple aspects of human development; it relates not only to physical infrastructure (e.g. electricity grids), but also to energy affordability, reliability and commercial viability. In practical terms, this means delivering Fifth International Conference Women Scientist in a Quest for Sustainability and Development 17-20 september 2014 Symposia, panel and workshop 15 energy services to households and businesses that are in line with consumers’ ability to pay. Approaches of various developing countries will be presented and analyzed. 8:00 - 10:00 / CRISTAL Symposium 4 Emerging Pollutants in Water Resources of Developing Countries: Who cares and Who Dares? MODERATOR Olfa Mahjoub Reseach Institute for Rural Engineering, Water, and Forestry, Tunisia PARTICIPANTS Carmen Ponce-Caballero (Mexico); Petra Nnamani (Nigeria); Wafaa M. Abd El-Rahim (Egypt). Chemicals are being discovered in water that previously had not been detected or are being detected at levels that may be significantly different than expected. These are often generally referred to as “contaminants of emerging concern” (CECs) because the risk to human health and the environment associated with their presence, frequency of occurrence, or source may not be known, these emerging pollutants are new chemicals without regulatory status and which impact on environment and human health are poorly understood. The objective of this symposium is analyzing the actual situation concerning these and other pollutants in developing countries as well as strategies to alleviate the situation. 8:00 - 10:00 / FRIDA Symposium 5 Women´s Health and Gender Research MODERATOR Enedina Jiménez Mexico PARTICIPANTS Sujatha M. (India); Xiyn Yan (China); Noemí Tirado (Bolivia); María Isabel López Martínez (Mexico); Chibuzo, Umeh (Nigeria) Persistently high levels of ill health, exacerbated by HIV/AIDS, and inequalities in health and access to health care indicate that equity issues in health care are still inadequately addressed. What is needed is the will, at all levels of government, supported by outside funding sources, to devote the required resources to advancing the cause of women’s health and to foster research on health with a gender perspective at national and regional level in the developing world. Approaches of different countries will be discussed in this symposium. Fifth International Conference Women Scientist in a Quest for Sustainability and Development 17-20 september 2014 16 Symposia, panel and workshop 17:00 - 19:00 / FRIDA Symposium 6 A Gender Perspective in Science, Technology and Innovation Policy ORGANIZED BY Gabriela Dutrénit Foro Consultivo Científico y Tecnológico, Mexico MODERATOR Gabriela Dutrénit Foro Consultivo Científico y Tecnológico, Mexico. PARTICIPANTS Sussan Cozzens (Georgia Tech, USA); Glenda Kruss (Human Sciences Research Council, South Africa); Mónica Salazar (Observatorio Colombiano de Ciencia y Tecnología, Colombia); Adriana Ortiz (Facultad de Ciencias Políticas y Sociales), UNAM, México); Ana Puy Rodríguez (Universidad de la Laguna, España); Smita Smita Srinivas (Columbia University, USA). Is it feasible to change gender inequalities to promote gender equality public policy? And more importantly how to deal with the quality- equality dilemma that is central for the gender and science debate? 17:00 - 19:00 / SIQUEIROS Symposium 7 Towards Sustainable Entrepreneurship and Social Development MODERATOR Liliam Álvarez Cuba PARTICIPANTS Manuel Limonta (International Council for Science Regional Office for Latin America and The Caribbean); Gustavo Viniegra (Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana plantel Iztapalapa, Mexico). Social entrepreneurship is about applying practical, innovative and sustainable approaches to benefit society in general, with an emphasis on those who are marginalized and poor. It captures a unique approach to economic and social problems. It is this approach that sets the social entrepreneur apart from the rest of the crowd of well-meaning people and organizations who dedicate their lives to social improvement. Approaches and points of view of researchers from different countries and organizations will be discussed. Fifth International Conference Women Scientist in a Quest for Sustainability and Development 17-20 september 2014 Symposia, panel and workshop 17 17:00 - 19:00 / SIQUEIROS Symposium 8 Environment, Conservation and Sustainability: The role of Women MODERATOR Bibiana Vila Argentina PARTICIPANTS Samira Omar (Kuwait); Bertha García (Peru); Kinkini Dasgupta Misra (India). While women’s environmental contributions offer an incentive for a thorough analysis of gender, there is a broader perspective as well. Gender equality is essential for countries’ economies and sustainable development is not possible without equity. In fact, it is a prerequisite for any action aimed at improving people’s quality of life. This implies that gender equality and equity are not only a question of fundamental human rights and social justice, but are also instrumental, and a precondition, for environmental conservation, sustainable development and human security (Julekha Begum, Bangladesh). SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 20th 8:00 - 10:00 / FRIDA Symposium 9 Voices of Scientists: Opportunities and Obstacles MODERATOR Myriam Amezcua Instituto Mexicano del Petróleo, Mexico PARTICIPANTS I.A. Kalagbor, Chiemeke Stella & Nkechi Emea Ibisi (Nigeria); Peiheng Qin (China); Silvia Torres (Mexico). Although women have better access to education and employment in scientific fields today than ever before, the playing field is not level one. Even though women and men face many similar hurdles in science, women are more likely to falter because they lack role models, support systems to help them balance family and work, and professional networks that men can tap into more easily. Women scientist will tell us their experience and proposals to make the way easier for girls who aim to be scientist. Fifth International Conference Women Scientist in a Quest for Sustainability and Development 17-20 september 2014 18 Symposia, panel and workshop 8:00 - 10:00 / SIQUEIROS Symposium 10 Engineering for sustainable development MODERATOR Rosalia Zepahua Mexico PARTICIPANTS Veronica V.N. Akwukwuma (Nigeria); Cecilia Morales-Juárez, Micheline Gutiérrez-Prieto & Diana Vargas (Mexico). There is still a notable shortage of women in engineering, most people associate math and science fields with men and humanities and the arts with women. Women are still less likely to get an engineering job than men, influenced by societal norms and workplace bias. There have been polls done that show that most people do not think of engineering as a job where people are helping people or contributing to society. Changing the image of engineering could make it clear that engineers do, in fact, contribute to society in a meaningful way. This could go a long way toward opening girls’ eyes to the possibility of a career in engineering. Seeing women who are engineers can make a big difference too (Christianne Corbett). Examples that show that women engineer can success in developing countries will be analyzed as well as their influence to change the image of engineering. 8:00 - 10:00 / CRISTAL Symposium 11 Integrating a Gender Perspective into STI policies MODERATOR Michel Bergeron University of Montreal, Canada PARTICIPANTS Lanxiang Zhao (China); Esther Orozco (Mexico); Erica Hynes (Argentina); Gladys Esiobu (Nigeria); Lillian Alvarez (Cuba). The challenge for policy-makers is to assess and understand the gender factor of their human capital, and to build this knowledge into the design of their national development, including the national STI policies. The primary features of a gender-affirmative policy are: coherence, confirmation by evidence, integration into policy-making, and provisions for scaling up of successful programs (Anne Miroux). The models for integrating a gender perspective into STI policies of different countries and the constraints will be analyzed.
