PTA Message
Dear West families and friends,
I want to start off by thanking you for being involved
and for participating in school events as well as PTA
events that have been occurring regularly since
September. We have had two PTA meetings so far this
year, which were fairly well attended. It has been
great to see freshman parents as well as our seasoned
PTA folks participating. In addition, we have had two
Project Graduation (PG) Meetings. From this point on
throughout the end of the academic year, there will be
a PG meeting held each month in anticipation of and
preparation for this big event. It is not too late to
become involved, and we always welcome new people
with willing hearts and hands. The next several PG
meetings are as follows: February 12 directly following
the Senior Trip Parent Meeting, March 17, April 21, and
June 9. All meetings start at at 7pm in the Library.
The remaining PTA General Membership Meetings for
the year are: February 12, April 23 and June 9. We
always have a special guest speaker or two for these
meetings, and Dr. Morton is available, not only to give a
principal’s report, but also to address concerns and
questions. It is a great time to speak with him.
Believe it or not, it is time to begin the process of
selecting PTA officers for the 2014-2015 school year.
The slate needs to be completed by the April meeting,
and will be voted on at the June meeting. Some
officers will be staying on, if elected. Others are
moving on as their child is graduating from West, and
they must also graduate. If you are interested in
helping out in any capacity next year, please contact
me or one of the other officers. Our information is on
the West Website.
Lastly, this is where I sound like a broken record. We
accept membership into the PTA throughout the entire
school year. Forms can be downloaded and printed,
and can be sent in with your child. Membership is $10
per person.
Again, thank you for your involvement. Many hands
make light work (as my grandmother used to say). Stay
warm, and think summer!
Warmly,
Kris Walters, CHHS West PTA President

Dear Parents & Guardians:
It is my hope that this New Year has been a happy
and joyous one for you thus far! We are excited about the
many wonderful things that are happening here at High
School West. We are intently focused on our goal of
raising academic achievement levels for all students
while also helping our students to develop the
character that they will need to succeed in postsecondary school life.
Our students are hard at work both in and out of the
classroom. The second marking period has closed and
report cards will be distributed on February 11th. I am
encouraged by the high number of honor roll students for
the second marking period. College acceptances and
scholarships have been rolling in for our 12th grade students
including those to prestigious Universities. The students
involved in our theater program will be putting on a
prodection of the musical In The Heights. The show opens
on March 21st, and it promises to be highly entertaining
affair. Students involved in our music programs continue to
flourish having already given us multiple memorable
moments this year. We are also in the midst of the Winter
sports season. I am proud to report that our sports teams
are representing HS West with pride and integrity. It is
truly an exciting time to be a part of the HS West family!
In the coming weeks guidance counselors will be meeting
with all students to begin the process of course selection
for the 2014-2015 school year. It is essential that parents
are involved in this process with their children. I encourage
you to engage your child in a conversation about their
future interests to ensure that they select courses that are
aligned with those future interests.
Finally, you can stay up to date with important daily
announcements and other pertinent information by
following us on Twitter @CherryHillWest. Please know that
I consider it a privilege and an honor to have the
opportunity to interact with the students of HS West on a
daily basis. Feel free to contact me with any questions or
concerns you may have. I am always available for you!
Yours truly,
Dr. Kwame R. Morton, Sr.
Principal

Guidance Center
Student Assistance Program
Cherry Hill Schools has provided a Student
Assistance Counseling Program for many years. In
addition to the traditional guidance services
offered in the school the Student Assistance
Program is intended to address personal issues
early as a means of prevention. The Student
Assistant Counselors, Mrs. Barbara
Rakoczy at West, (663-8006, ext. 1216), Mrs.
Jennifer Distefano, at East (424-2222, ext. 2548),
and Mrs. Molly Crincoli (429-5600, ext. 455) at
Malberg each have a Master’s Degree in Counseling
in addition to a certification as Substance
Awareness Coordinators or Student Assistance
Counselors (SAC).
Student Assistance is a confidential counseling
program designed to help students and families
with a broad spectrum of issues. The counseling
program provides a safe haven for students to
explore difficult and sometimes sensitive issues so
they can develop a positive plan for coping or
change. In the past, students have received help
managing stress, parental separation/ divorce,
peer conflicts, grief, eating disorders, depression,
anxiety and substance abuse. Student Assistance is
often viewed as family assistance, since many
times the entire family is offered assistance in
managing a difficult situation.
Peer support groups are also offered on a voluntary
basis. Though the groups are not therapy they
provide a safe environment where students may
receive peer support, gain education around a
specific issue or concern, and develop listening and
coping skills that will assist them in both school
and at home.
In addition to self-referrals, many students make
contact with the Student Assistance Counselor as a
result of a caring teacher, administrator, nurse,
guidance counselor, friend or parent who requests
an appointment for a student. If you would like to
make a referral or discuss a concern, please
contact the SAC in your student’s school at the
telephone numbers indicated above.
Scholarship Update
ABOUT LOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS by Michelle Pryor, School
Counselor/Scholarship
Coordinator
Each year, West seniors are able to apply for over $50,000
total worth of scholarships awarded to only West seniors. For
these awards, our students compete only with each other.
The criteria for each award varies. However, many require an
essay, an official transcript, test scores, a resume, and in
some instances an interview. The effort spent applying for
these scholarships is worthwhile as the odds of receiving the
award increase with this smaller pool of applicants. These
scholarships are called "local scholarships." The local
scholarships will now contain in the heading the words For
West Seniors Only.
Some, but not all, of the local scholarships are: The Cherry
Hill Rotary Scholarship, The Jon W. Dinsmore Memorial
Scholarship, The Nan Lightstone Memorial Scholarship, The
Lions Pride Alumni Association, The Mark Homan
Foundation Scholarship, The Madeline Hyman Memorial
Scholarship, and The Cherry Hill African American Civic
Association Scholarship.
On a yearly basis, I contact the Cherry Hill organizations and
the private donors who are often the families of the person
for whom the scholarship is named, to confirm the existence
of the scholarship and the current amount to be awarded. At
times, the donors have wanted to discontinue the
scholarship, however, I was able to convince them not to do
so. Herein lies the frustration: It is so difficult to get our
seniors to apply for these scholarships even though I am
sure they could use the money. Despite repeated efforts to
get students to apply, some of these awards have no more
than one or two applicants.
Seniors, do not let the word "essay" cause you to miss an
opportunity. With well-placed effort in life, you can reap
rewards. Apply for as many scholarships as possible, but
especially for the local scholarships.

Ways & Means Update
Winter greetings all! Just a quick update on our fundraising efforts to date. We are continuing with our Shop
Rite card sales but it has been a slow year. Remember....5% of the value we sell goes back to West PTA, which
in turn goes back to the school/kids. Please consider supporting this program. Just contact me (info below)
and I will get the cards to you.
Next up is an anniversary fundraiser with Jersey Mike's Cherry Hill. It is tentatively set for 2/20/14 but final
details are still being worked out. Jersey Mike's was so wonderful to work with last year and the amount of
money raised was incredible. The additional funds were put to such good use for the school and the students.
Let's do our part to make this another great fundraiser!
Thank you for your support of West PTA.

King Day of Service Mural Arts Project
By Alexis Mayfield
On January 8, 2014 8 West students participated in a press conference to unveil the annual King Day of Service
student mural project at Gerard City College in Philadelphia. The 8 West students created a 5’ x 6’ panel
commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision Brown v. Board of Education. Working in
conjunction with the Philadelphia Mural Arts project, and resident artist Cesar, the students were able to
create a panel entitled “for all” representing not just liberty and justice, but also respect, peace, compassion,
courage, love and hope for all. These were all hard fought for and won in the Brown v. Board decision. With
Oliver Brown as a central figure, he is surrounded by lady justice whose eyes were blind to race, but open to
the fact that separate can never truly be equal; children who although outwardly different are undoubtedly
united; Ruby Bridges who dared to fight for her own future and those who came after her; and doves as a
symbolic reminder of how far we have come and the hope of what the future holds. The full banner will be
displayed at the armory in Philadelphia on January 20, 2014 during the day of services activities in
Philadelphia. High School West will have the opportunity to display the banner at West sometime in the spring,
look for those dates and please come in to celebrate our students and their work.

who wish to take AP examinations must register with AP Coordinator Melissa Franzosi in Guidance by 4:00
PM on Wednesday, April 2. The AP order must be completed and processed at the end of that day, and
there can be no late submissions. The fee for each AP exam is $100.00 and can be remitted via check or
money order only payable to “CHHSW” (it is not necessary to write out the full name of the high school). If
a student chooses to take more than one AP exam, s/he need not submit separate checks/money orders—the
total fee may be combined into one sum. Students who may need financial assistance to pay for AP exams
should see Mrs. Franzosi individually.
Along with the fees for AP exams, students must also submit a form indicating which exam(s) they
will be taking. Forms will be distributed in all AP classes and will also be available in Guidance and from AP
instructors. Students should submit completed forms and fees directly to Ms. Kane, Guidance secretary
personally—do not leave these in a mailbox or give them to anyone else!
Any student at West is welcome to sign up for an AP exam. If a student is not enrolled in an AP
course but still wishes to sit for an AP exam, that student should see Mrs. Franzosi for appropriate forms and
instructions. Thank you!

2014
Dear Cherry Hill West Community Member,
PROJECT GRADUATION is an annual post-graduation event providing seniors with a drug and alcoholfree environment in which to celebrate. West PTA sponsors it with the help of the entire community.
We’re planning our 2014 celebration and need your financial support. Since 1991, we’ve partnered
together and have been so proud of the community response that has allowed us to provide PROJECT
GRADUATION. We look forward to continuing this important tradition for all of our future West Graduates.
Graduation is a high-risk time for high school students, with injuries and fatalities often due to the
celebrations that include alcohol and drugs. This post graduation party, to be held the night of graduation
from 10pm to 5am, will provide a safe place for our graduates to gather together and celebrate their “first
reunion”. We need your help to provide this memorable night for our graduates.
MAY WE COUNT ON YOU?
Benefactors ($1,000) or more
Sponsors ($500-999)
Patrons ($100-499)
Friends ($1-99)
For more information, contact Project Graduation Chairs:
Christie Robertson, [email protected]; Mindy Kegel, [email protected] or Jack Gallagher,
[email protected];
Thank you for your support so characteristic of the West community!
Please complete the following form and return to CHHSW PTA, Attn: Project Graduation, 2101 Chapel
Avenue, Cherry Hill, NJ 08002. Make checks payable to Cherry Hill West PTA.
I am pleased to support Cherry Hill West Project Graduation 2014!

SHOP RITE GIFT CERTIFICATES
Interested in helping the PTA but you just don’t have the time? Then purchase Shop Rite
gift cards through us. Shop Rite has a program where our PTA purchases gift cards at a reduced
face value of 95%. The PTA sells them to you for full face value. That means if you use our gift
cards for a month at an average of $1,000 per month, our PTA earns $50. That’s a pretty good
deal. There are no restrictions and the cards do not expire.
All you have to do is contact me. I will drop the cards off to you or you can pick up at my
house or at the next PTA meeting. So instead of writing a check to Shop Rite (or using a bank
card), please think about taking this extra step, contact us, and use our cards. It is a great way
to support the PTA which in turn provides support and programs for all students.
Thank you!!
