Master luthier John D’Angelico is universally regarded as the finest archtop guitar builder that ever lived. In his Kenmare Street workshop, on New York City’s Lower East Side, he created the first of what would become the standard to which all other guitars would be compared. D’Angelico adapted techniques that had been used for centuries, and then improved these delicate manual processes in order to build the modern instruments demanded by his musician clients. The marvelous reputation of “D’Angelico-built” guitars quickly spread throughout the musical community and soon John’s workshop began attracting professional musicians from all over the United States. During 32 years of production and innovation, the D’Angelico Workshop built 1,164 guitars of exceptional beauty, precision and performance. Although these superb hand-crafted instruments originally sold for prices similar to those of factory-built models, today they are highly collectible, worth many thousands of dollars, and are regularly included in museum and gallery shows as works of art. John D’Angelico was a native New Yorker and his foremost guitar designs included features in the geometric Art Deco style that was enormously popular in New York at the time, and was widely used for architectural and industrial applications. The signature ziggurat inlay, which appeared on the first New Yorker model headstock, became D’Angelico’s iconic trademark. This “stair-step” motif is actually an Art Deco rendering of the famous New Yorker Hotel. While each D’Angelico instrument was hand made with traditional Old World techniques, they were thoroughly modern instruments. Each of D’Angelico’s creations incorporated the latest features demanded by the musicians of the time. Many of D’Angelico’s customers and musician friends were also interested in guitar design, and they contributed to the evolution of D’Angelico’s products by offering suggestions and ordering instruments with special custom features. Although D’Angelico’s guitars were made to regular specifications and standard catalog descriptions, they were often built to suit the specific requirements of the customers who ordered them. Therefore, D’Angelico guitars are found with considerable variations in such features as scale length, neck width, and body depth. Some had classical-width fretboards, while others had extremely narrow necks. Body depths likewise varied, depending on whether the customer wanted a guitar with a treble sound or a bass sound. In the late ‘50s and early ‘60s, for example, D’Angelico made many guitars primarily for recording use, which were generally shallower than his earlier guitars. John D’Angelico always valued the close relationship between himself and his customers. This was one of the most appealing factors in ordering a D’Angelico instrument. The shop was small enough to cater to the desires of each musician. Allowing players to choose different types of wood, sizes, and shapes of neck, and any other custom features one might desire. While most of D’Angelico’s customers were from New York City, many came from considerable distances to place their orders. Although these custom instruments were of extraordinarily fine quality, many were sold at prices comparable to those of factory-made instruments. Some were even given away for free to players whose skill & desire to own a D’Angelico was larger than their wallets. The care & dedication that John D’Angelico lived & built with made him widely recognized as a great craftsman & a great human. Today’s D’Angelico Guitar is born to perform. We work hard to maintain the exquisite craftsmanship and imaginative techniques learned in the Kenmare Street shop, using only top quality woods and components for each and every one of our models.
