CRITICAL CARE SUZANNE DEMPSEY, DVM Diplomate American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Dr. Dempsey received her veterinary degree from the University of Georgia in 2006. She then completed a rotating small animal internship and emergency and critical care residency at Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston. She is board certified in Emergency and Critical Care and joined CARES in 2012. Outside of work she enjoys spending time with her family, exploring local museums, restaurants and parks and traveling. Dr. Dempsey is available in the hospital Wednesday through Friday. GARY PUGLIA, DVM Diplomate American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Dr. Puglia received his veterinary degree from Tufts University. He then completed an internship at Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston followed by an emergency and critical care residency at Tufts University. He spent two years at Red Bank Veterinary Hospital as a staff criticalist and internship director, as well as two years at Hope Veterinary Specialists as a staff criticalist before joining CARES in 2015. Outside of work he enjoys running, cooking (particularly grilling), lacrosse, and building or refinishing furniture. Dr. Puglia is available in the hospital Sunday through Wednesday. EMERGENCY JONATHAN RAPPAPORT, VMD Hospital Director Dr. Rappaport earned his veterinary degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1993. He founded CARES in 2004 after working as an emergency clinician in the area. Outside of work, Dr. Rappaport enjoys exercise, travel, gastronomy, and spending time with his family (two and 4 legged!). Dr. Rappaport is available via the emergency service Monday through Friday. MORGAN CALLAHAN, VMD Dr. Callahan received her veterinary degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 2005. She then completed a rotating small animal internship at Garden State Veterinary Specialists. She joined CARES in 2007. Dr. Callahan lives in Philadelphia with her husband and two young children. Outside of the hospital she enjoys cycling, hiking and snowboarding. She finds nothing more rewarding, than seeing patients feeling well and returning home with families especially after an emergent situation. Dr. Callahan is available via the emergency service on a rotating schedule. KIMBERLEY DITATA, DVM Dr. DiTata received her veterinary degree from the University of Wisconsin in 2012. She then completed a rotating small animal internship at the Animal Medical Center in New York City. She also completed a small animal surgery internship at VCA Veterinary Emergency and Referral Center in Norwalk Connecticut before joining CARES in 2014. Dr. DiTata is available via the emergency service on a rotating schedule. KREIG EMBRIANO, VMD Dr. Embriano received his veterinary degree from the University of Pennsylvania, and joined CARES in 2015. His professional interests includes emergency and emergency surgery, anesthesia, and dermatology. In his free time, Dr. Embriano enjoys running, kayaking, soccer, playing music, and trying out new tech gadgets. He has 4 cats with the love of his life and fellow vet, Amy. Dr. Embriano is available via the emergency service on a rotating schedule. 24 HOUR EMERGENCY & CRITICAL CARE KARLIN ERK, VMD Dr. Erk received his veterinary degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 2005. He then worked as an emergency clinician in Colorado before joining CARES in 2010. When Dr. Erk isn't under a big heap wrestling his three young sons, he loves being outside, especially on the water and in the mountains. Dr. Erk is available via the emergency service on a rotating schedule. JESS FEJES, VMD Dr. Fejes received her veterinary degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 2014. She then worked as an emergency clinician in New Jersey before joining CARES in 2015. Outside of work, Dr. Fejes enjoys traveling, reading, and spending time with her husband and pets. Dr. Fejes is available via the emergency service on a rotating schedule. SAM GARTLAND, VMD Dr. Gartland received his veterinary degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 2014. He completed an internship in small animal medicine and surgery at Oradell Animal Hospital prior to joining CARES in 2015. His undergraduate degree is from Bucknell University. He enjoys all aspects of veterinary medicine, especially emergency and critical care. His interests outside of veterinary medicine include spending time with his wife (who is also a veterinarian), his dog and his cat. Additionally, his hobbies include cooking, traveling, sports, and playing guitar. Dr. Gartland is available via the emergency service on a rotating schedule. NICHOLLE HOMMEL, VMD Dr. Hommel received her veterinary degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 2007. She worked in a Small Animal private practice in center city Philadelphia, PA for 8 years before joining the CARES team in 2015. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time outdoors with her husband and two children - hiking, camping, mountain biking, and most of all, relaxing on the beach, listening to the ocean. Dr. Hommel is available via the emergency service on a rotating schedule. JASON PALAIGOS, VMD Dr. Palaigos graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 2015. He is originally from the Baltimore area and currently lives just outside of Philadelphia with his girlfriend of five years and their rescue dog, Trixie. In his off time, he enjoys exploring southeast Pennsylvania and spending time with family and friends in the Baltimore area. He is a hiker, amateur mountaineer, and enjoys visiting new national parks when able. He has explored the Appalachian mountains between Pennsylvania and New Hampshire, and has summited several iconic mountains in the United States such as Mt. Washington, Half Dome, and Angel's Landing. Dr. Palaigos is available via the emergency service on a rotating schedule. JENNIFER WINTERGRASS, DVM Dr. Wintergrass received her veterinary degree from Ross University in 2013. She joined CARES in 2014 after spending a year as an emergency clinician in Delaware County. When she is not working, Dr. Wintergrass enjoys running, painting, and other crafts. She also has an interest in graphic design. She resides in the city with her two cats, Hammy and Joob, and one dog, Skeeter. She is a self-proclaimed eccentric feline enthusiast, but loves all of her patients and especially helping them in the most critical of times. Dr. Wintergrass is available via the emergency service on a rotating schedule. ANESTHESIOLOGY ANDREA CANIGLIA, VMD Diplomate American College of Veterinary Anesthesiology Dr. Caniglia received her veterinary degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 2007. She then completed a rotating large animal internship, followed by an anesthesia internship and residency at the University of Pennsylvania. She joined CARES in 2011. Outside of work, Dr. Caniglia enjoys spending time with her family, running and cooking. She lives with her husband Todd, two daughters Sofia and Alessia, and two dogs Willie (Wire Fox Terrier) and Bella (Portuguese Water Dog). Dr. Caniglia is available in the hospital Tuesday through Friday. THE CANCER CENTER AT CARES JENNIFER BAEZ, VMD Diplomate American Collage of Internal Medicine (Oncology and Small Animal Internal Medicine) Dr. Baez received her veterinary degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1992. She then completed a rotating small animal internship at VCA South Shore Animal Hospital. Dr. Baez went on to complete a small animal internal medicine residency followed by an oncology residency at the University of Pennsylvania. She joined CARES in 2005 after spending seven years as a lecturer and Assistant Professor at the University of Pennsylvania. Outside of work, Dr. Baez enjoys spending time with her family, including her husband, Brad, and her two daughters, Emma and Lizzy, as well as her three dogs, Charlotte, a Golden Retriever, and Remy and Vivi, French Bulldogs. Her other interests include horseback riding, skiing, traveling, and music. Dr. Baez is available for consultations Monday through Wednesday. BETH OVERLEY, VMD Diplomate American Collage of Internal Medicine (Oncology) Dr. Overley received her veterinary degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 2000. She then completed a rotating small animal internship and oncology residency at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Overley joined CARES in 2008 after spending three years as a staff oncologist at the University of Pennsylvania. Outside of work, she enjoys tennis, dancing, sailing, scuba, hiking, and reading. She shares her home with her husband, two children, two dogs, one fish, and one (very large) bird named Bob. Dr. Overley is available for consultations Thursdays and Fridays. CARDIOLOGY MEGAN KING, VMD Diplomate American College of Internal Medicine (Cardiology) Dr. King received her veterinary degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 2003. She then completed a rotating small animal internship and cardiology residency at Red Bank Veterinary Hospital. She joined CARES in 2006. Dr. King lives in Philadelphia with her husband, two sons and two german shorthaired pointers. When not working she enjoys spending time with her family and friends, the beach, running and CrossFit. She is available for consultations Monday and Wednesday, and on an emergency basis through our emergency department. DENTISTRY & ORAL SURGERY CARLOS RICE, DVM Diplomate American Veterinary Dental College Dr. Rice received his veterinary degree from Ross University in 2006. He then completed an internship in Dentistry and Oral Surgery at All Pets Dental Clinic in Florida. He went on to complete a residency at the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Rice joined CARES in 2014 after spending three years as a lecturer in dentistry at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Rice is an avid sportsman. He is a competitive cyclist and enjoys playing racquet sports and soccer. When not at CARES he can be found tackling the Manayunk Wall, playing a lively game of racquets, or cheering on his beloved Tottenham Hotspur. He is available for consultations Tuesday through Friday. DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING JESSICA BASSECHES, DVM Diplomate American College of Veterinary Radiology Dr. Basseches received her veterinary degree from North Carolina State University in 2003. She then completed a rotating small animal internship at Affiliated Veterinary Specialists in Florida. She went on to complete a residency in Diagnostic Imaging at the University of Georgia. Dr. Basseches joined CARES in 2013 after spending several years at Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston. When not at work, Dr. Basseches enjoys spending as much time as possible outdoors taking pictures, hiking or running, gardening and exploring foreign destinations with her partner. She is excited about the idea of having honey bees and is always tweaking her recipe for homemade sauerkraut. She is available for consultations Monday through Thursday. CHRISTOPHER RYAN, VMD Diplomate American College of Veterinary Radiology Diplomate American Board of Veterinary Practitioners Dr. Ryan received his veterinary degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 2003. He then completed a rotating small animal internship at Red Bank Veterinary Hospital followed by a residency in Diagnostic Imaging at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Ryan is board certified in Diagnostic Imaging (Radiology) as well as a Veterinary Practitioner. He is available for consultations Fridays. JONATHAN NEVINS, DVM Diplomate American College of Veterinary Radiology Dr. Nevins received his veterinary degree from the University of Minnesota in 2011. He then completed a rotating small animal internship and Diagnostic Imaging residency at the University of Pennsylvania. Outside of the hospital, Dr. Nevins enjoys spending time with family including his Labrador Shylo, especially taking her to swimming spots. He is available for consultations on Saturdays. INTERNAL MEDICINE JENNIFER ADLER, MSc, VMD Diplomate American College of Internal Medicine (Small Animal Internal Medicine) Dr. Adler received her veterinary degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 2003. She then completed a rotating small animal internship at VCA West Los Angeles Animal Hospital followed by a small animal internal medicine residency at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Adler joined CARES in 2008. Outside of work, Dr. Adler enjoys running, the beach and her expanding family, as well as a naughty terrier mix named Lloyd. She is available for consultations Monday through Wednesday. JESSICA MIDENCE, DVM Diplomate American College of Internal Medicine (Small Animal Internal Medicine) Dr. Midence received her veterinary degree from Cornell University in 2010. She then completed a rotating small animal internship at Ohio State followed by a small animal internal medicine residency at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Midence joined CARES in 2014. Outside of work, Dr. Midence enjoys relaxing at home with her family and pets. She also enjoys travel, trying new restaurants, and all things pop culture. She is available for consultations Wednesday through Saturday. NEUROLOGY EDWIN DARRIN, VMD Diplomate American College of Internal Medicine (Neurology) Dr. Darrin received his veterinary degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 2002. He then completed a rotating small animal internship at Red Bank Veterinary Hospital followed by a neurology residency at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Darrin joined CARES in 2010. When he is not at CARES, Dr. Darrin enjoys hiking and backpacking and listening to music. He is available for consultations Monday through Friday. OPHTHALMOLOGY MARTHA LOW, DVM Diplomate American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologist Dr. Low received her veterinary degree from the University of Illinois in 2009. She then completed a rotating small animal internship and ophthalmology residency at CARES. Dr. Low joined us at CARES as a board certified ophthalmologist in 2013. Dr. Low enjoys cooking, gardening, horseback riding and hiking with her favorite four-legged friend Riley. She is available for consultations Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. SURGERY DAVID PUERTO, DVM Diplomate American College of Veterinary Surgeons Dr. Puerto received his veterinary degree from Cornell University in 1993. He then completed a rotating small animal internship and surgery residency at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Puerto joined CARES in 2004 after spending three years as a surgery lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Puerto enjoys spending time with his family and pets. He enjoys being active with karate with the family, biking, running, and horseback riding. The family menagerie includes a pug, two cats and a flock of chickens. He is available for consultations on Tuesday and Thursday and surgery on Wednesday and Friday. STEPHANIE ROSENHECK, DVM Practice Limited to Surgery Dr. Rosenheck received her veterinary degree from Western University of Health Sciences in 2011. She then completed a rotating small animal internship followed by a small animal surgical residency at Red Bank Veterinary Hospital in Tinton Falls, NJ. She is boards eligible and joined CARES in 2015. Outside of work Dr. Rosenheck enjoys reading, cooking, spending time outdoors with her fiance, and hanging out with their cats. She is available for consultations on Monday and Wednesday and surgery on Tuesday and Thursday.
