combination of both inland and pure links
golf, which represents a challenging but
fair test for all levels of player.
The golf course was established in 1894 making it
one the oldest golf courses in Ireland. With this long
history Bundoran Golf Club has played a prominent
role in Irish golf.
In 1927 Harry Vardon, one of the world renowned
course designers, visited Bundoran and made the
necessary alterations in order to establish Bundoran
as a championship type venue. This objective was
achieved in 1930 with the first professional tournament
being played over 72 holes.
Bundoran Golf Club further came into prominence
when the world renowned Christy O’Connor Snr
became the golf professional from 1951-1957.
O’Connor Snr was a member of 10 Ryder Cup teams
and won many individual events across the world.
Bundoran Golf Club still holds major events. The
most prominent is the West Coast Challenge which
attracts visitors from as far as the United Kingdom,
United States, Canada and across Europe. This is
regarded as one of the premier amateur events in
Ireland.

In recent years the course has received an
extensive design upgrade by Pat Ruddy who has
gained the deserved reputation of “master of links
design” worldwide. Pat Ruddy’s relentless pursuit of
excellence is evident in his adjustment to a number
of holes.
The course now stretches to a massive 6736
metres – 7400 yards. Donegal’s layout is configured
in two elongated loops of nine holes. The front
nine runs anticlockwise and the back nine runs
clockwise, sitting inside the outward nine and
because of this it is regularly described as “The
Muirfield of Ireland”. The course at Murvagh offers
a genuine challenge to the accomplished golfer and
is an all round ‘true’ test of golf. Being one of the

In 1891, while a guest of Lord Leitrim, Old Tom
Morris of St Andrews (a winner of four British Opens
in the 1860s) took a drive to enjoy the Donegal
scenery. It didn’t take long for Morris to realise that the
Donegal coastline has endless golfing potential.
Before returning home he had staked out the first
Rosapenna Links, incorporating wide rolling fairways
amidst the undulating terrain and of course those
delightful greens.
Back at St Andrews, Old Tom was quick to tell of his
discovery and Rosapenna became a place of pilgrimage
for golfers at the turn of the century. Amongst those to
follow were two other great golfing champions, Harry
Vardon and James Braid who won 11 British Open
titles between them. They added length and more
detailed bunkering but left those wonderful natural
greens untouched.
In 2009 the new Strand Nine opened at Rosapenna.
It replaced the original back nine which played across

the main road on a number of holes.
These new links holes are fashioned much like the
original Old Tom Morris Valley nine. They run along
the beautiful Tramore beach overlooking Sheephaven
Bay and have now become the back nine.

Where Old Tom settled for a course alongside the
dunes, Pat Ruddy has gone straight through them from
start to finish and created a golf course that will test
any golfer.
Each hole is spectacular and the views toward
the beautiful Sheephaven Bay will salve any wounds
inflicted by this incredible golf course.
Sandy Hills is in many ways the ideal of a modern
links. Intended for the serious golfer, its narrow
fairways appear constricting from the tee, but the
landing areas sculpted from the dunes are deceptively
wide. Measuring a hefty 7,255 yards from the tips,
Sandy Hills was designed with championship play
in mind.
However don’t allow this to deter you; with a
multiplicity of tees there is a length to suit all strengths.
