When his wife mentioned her interest in joining him on the road as a team driver two years ago, Fort knew he needed to find a company with a great training program. After doing some research, Fort determined that Prime inc., had one of the best student training programs around. Working with Prime, Fort was able to become a driver trainer and then train his wife himself. “The Prime Student Driver (PSD) program gave me a great opportunity for a career and allowed my husband to train me from start to finish,” says Melissa Fort. “With Prime, we’re able to stay together on the road, get great miles and work with some really great people.” With the PSD program, students can obtain their CDL and receive top-notch training with experienced instructors while still earning a weekly income. The program is designed to help students achieve their long-term goals of becoming successful company drivers or independent contractors. To enter the PSD program, students must be at least 21 years of age, have a valid U.S. driver’s license and good driving record. Kevin and Melissa Fort run from coast-to-coast with Prime’s refrigerated division. When the two are not on the road, they like to spend time at their home in North Carolina with their children and grandchild as well as fishing together when they can get some time away. The couple’s son, Kevin Fort, Jr., is also a company driver at Prime. Melissa Fort was recently chosen as the 2013 Female Driver of the Year by the Healthy Trucking Association. She participated in Prime’s first ever Driver Health and Fitness class and lost 10.1 percent of her total bodyweight during the 13-week program. She is now a Driver Health and Fitness Coach, helping coach other Prime drivers in the program while continuing to lose weight herself. EVERY SECOND COUNTS 877-491-1102|DriveForPrime.com 7 American Fulfilled Perry WEBSTER Driver prides himself on working for the best Perry “Tex” Webster grew up right in the backyard of Prime inc. located in Springfield, Mo. For Webster, it felt only natural that he would eventually become a professional driver since Prime had always felt like it was a huge part of his community. “I actually started driving for someone else because I wanted to explore different companies and see what else was out there since I already knew so much about Prime,” says Webster, who joined Prime in 2011. “I wanted to see if there was anything better, and I found that there really isn’t another company out there better than Prime.” Prime, explains Webster, stands out for its family-like atmosphere and how it treats its drivers. The company focuses on creating successful drivers, which is why it provides a solid lease-purchase program, competitive pay scale and one of the best driver training programs in the industry. Webster became a CDL instructor for Prime over a year ago when his brother decided to join him at the company. He spent a lot of time helping his brother learn the ins and outs of the business, so it only felt natural that he pursue becoming an instructor. “I teach these guys how to do things the right way: how to drive a truck, back it up and be professional on the road,” he says. “Teaching them how to do things properly means that I’m ensuring that Prime continues to have safe drivers.” Webster says he also appreciates being able to balance his work and home life. “Prime has always been good about getting me home when I need to be there,” he says. “It’s just one more thing that proves that when you’re driving for Prime, you’re driving for the best.” EVERY SECOND COUNTS 8 Prime’s Student Driver program sets students up for success James Burrow loves being a professional driver. As an independent contractor for Prime inc., Burrow enjoys the freedom on the road and the control he has over how successful he is with his truck. It’s everything he wanted when he first came to Prime as a student driver in 2005. “All the stuff with the economy had just started going on, and I wanted something that could offer me stability and the opportunity for success,” explains Burrow. “I gave it a shot with Prime because they had the best training program around that would allow me to go through debt-free.” The Prime Student Driver (PSD) program works with students like Burrow to help them achieve their goals of becoming a professional driver while ensuring they receive a solid education and one-on-one training. The program is designed to allow drivers to complete their training and earn a paycheck at the same time. “Other programs out there charge you a rate you have to pay back for your training, but with Prime, you’re making money practically from the start as long as you commit to the whole program,” Burrow says. “The amount of knowledge you gain is amazing, but even more than that, this is a place where you can learn a trade and still support a family.” James BURROW EVERY SECOND COUNTS 877-491-1102|DriveForPrime.com 9 American Fulfilled John VALENTINE Long-time Prime driver (and his family) find success behind the wheel For 23 years, John Valentine has built a solid driving career with Prime. But his connection to trucking and to the company has deep roots. “I met my wife Kathy on the road – she was a Prime driver for 18 years,” says Valentine. “She’s a two million miler and I’m a three million miler so we’re a pretty good match.” When he was growing up, Valentine’s parents were both drivers and eventually drove for Prime. After his father’s death, Valentine alternately teamed with his mother and his wife. “There can’t be many drivers out there who have been part of a driving team with their mom,” he says with a laugh. “We just did that for about three years.” Valentine says leasing with Prime has been beneficial for him as their programs help him operate profitably and they have great equipment available for lease. “They have the latest technology on board including rollover stability control,” he says. According to Valentine, Prime is always on time and correct with his pay and he is not pressured to take loads. “There is definitely no forced dispatch which is good,” he says. “My dispatcher is great to work with.” Valentine says he most appreciates that Prime is committed to open communication and keeping their operators informed. “They give us operational CDs and make sure we’re up to date on any regulations or issues,” he says. “That’s just another reason I would recommend Prime to other drivers.” EVERY SECOND COUNTS 10 877-491-1102|DriveForPrime.com Driver achieves unexpected success working for Prime Driver Roy McGuire knows his way around a flatbed truck. He and his wife worked together as team flatbed drivers for several years. Once his wife retired, McGuire decided to continue driving a flatbed as a solo driver and applied for a position with Prime, inc. McGuire knew he’d enjoy working for Prime, but he didn’t realize just how much his eight years with the company would impact his life. “Prime is unlike any other company out there. They treat each employee as if they are family,” explains McGuire. “Each driver at Prime is a real person – a real individual with a name and a story instead of just being a truck number.” McGuire especially likes Prime’s open door policy, which gives its drivers access to anyone in the company from their dispatcher all the way up to Robert Low, president and founder of Prime. This policy ensures that Prime drivers have all the tools essential for success. “You get everything you need to be a successful driver from Prime,” McGuire says. “The only thing missing is your motivation. Prime will work for you if you work for them.” With the money he makes driving for Prime, McGuire and his wife were able to purchase their own home and pay off a significant portion of their mortgage with his income from Prime. He was also able to buy a new motorcycle for himself and give his wife a new vehicle. “I also get plenty of time at home to spend time with my wife and my beautiful grandchildren and great-grandchildren,” adds McGuire, who owns a small 10-acre farm in Missouri.“ Roy MCGUIRE EVERY SECOND COUNTS 877-491-1102|DriveForPrime.com 11 IT’S TIME TO TAKE COMMAND.
