2016 National Junior Santa Gertrudis Heifer Show
Florida State Fairgrounds * Tampa, Florida
Dear Juniors and Parents:
We are excited to welcome all of you to the Sunshine State where we will be “Living the Gert
Life” for the 2016 National Junior Santa Gertrudis Heifer Show! Tampa is located on Florida’s
Gulf Coast and is the county seat of Hillsborough County. While Tampa is the third most
populous city in the state, just outside of the city lights Hillsborough County produced over
$378 million a year in agriculture products according to USDA’s most recent Agriculture
Census – proving that Florida is much more than just Mickey Mouse, beaches and palm
trees! With that said – who can plan a family vacation to Florida and not want to visit Disney
World or soak up some rays of sunshine on one of our beautiful beaches? We’ve got you
covered either way as we have scheduled a “Free Day” for Monday, June 20th.
We have a group trip to Disney’s Magic Kingdom planned for Monday, June 20th for those
who wish to participate. This trip will include a chartered bus ride to and from Orlando and
admission to the Magic Kingdom, including the nightly fireworks show before returning to
Tampa.
If you choose not to take the day trip to Disney and would prefer a more laid back day to visit
one of Florida’s beautiful beaches, you will only have a 20-mile drive from Tampa to
Clearwater Beach. Clearwater Beach has sugar white sand and was voted the “best family
beach” in the world by the Travel Channel in 2014.
In preparing for your travels to Florida, please remember to bring your health papers. You
will be required to stop at one, or more (depending on which way you are traveling),
agriculture inspection stations when entering and leaving the State of Florida and health
papers are REQUIRED to pass through.
We are excited to see all of you at the 2016 NJSGHS. For more information, please follow us
on Facebook: www.facebook.com/NJSGHS2016; email [email protected]; or call
SGBI: 361-592-9357, Wanda Jones: 386-867-3169, or Hilda Edenfield: 850-209-0780.

Z. Santa Gertrudis Breeders International and its representatives reserve the right to require any test
deemed necessary to verify the accuracy of an entry, classification and/or the pedigree of exhibited Santa
Gertrudis animals, including calves exhibited at the side of a Santa Gertrudis female.
The National Junior Santa Gertrudis Heifer Show consists of five divisions: owned purebred females; bred and owned
purebred females; best of polled purebred females; donated heifers and star five females. All entries must be
registered/recorded with Santa Gertrudis Breeders International and meet the SGBI Standard of Excellence and must be
groomed in accordance with the Shows and Exhibits standards:
#8 Fitting - Shows and Exhibits Rules:
a. Purebred fitting – All purebred animals must be exhibited with the hair brushed down on the entire
body, legs, and tail with no foreign objects attached to the animal in a manner as to alter the animal’s
conformation or change its appearance. Exhibitors failing to abide by this rule will not be allowed to show.
PUREBRED FITTING CONT.
Specifically, all hair must be brushed down slick; head clipped smooth; underline
clipped blending sides; udder and teats clipped with no long hair to emphasize
udder; ears clipped as to environmental and local standards; neck and brisket
clipped; body clip using common sense as to season; leg hair clipped and do not
leave long from hock or knee to hoof; tail head clipped; pull switch or brush out

b. Star Five fitting – Star Five exhibits are not subject to purebred clipping rules. Entries
are to be fitted blow and go. Hair may be brushed according to preference with no foreign
substances / fitting materials on any part of the body.
Standard of Excellence
Please read and understand: Purebred Santa Gertrudis must meet appearance standards.
For full explanation go to www.santagertrudis.com – look under Performance then go to Breed Standards
this will explain what conditions could cause disqualification of your animal. Please note one of the most
obvious problems is Hair color. White outside the underline or other spotting in other parts of the body
could cause disqualification. Brindle in any extent could cause disqualification. There should be no more
than 50% of the underline white, white must remain behind the front legs and may not extend past the
udder or testicles. Any questions please call a member of Breed Standards Committee.
Please read carefully, if you have any questions please contact the SGBI office at
(361) 592-9357 before the show begins. Do not wait to ask questions once the show beginsit may be too late.

National Santa Gertrudis Youth Foundation
Scholarship
The National Santa Gertrudis Youth Foundation sponsors a college scholarship program to
encourage junior members to continue their education beyond the high school level. The recipients are
chosen by a scholarship committee. The amount of each scholarship is determined annually by the NSGYF
Management Committee. The scholarships are awarded on the basis of membership and participation in the
junior association, grades, need and the perception of the committee that the applicant will complete the
future plans in higher education that he or she has.
Applications must be requested from the SGBI office and must be completed and returned to the SGBI office
by JUNE 1, 2016. No Late Entries will be accepted.
Only 2016 graduating seniors are eligible for scholarships being offered. The students must be current
members (dues paid for the 2016-member year). In addition, the students must have participated in at least
three (3) National Junior Santa Gertrudis Heifer Shows (the 2016 show can be included as one of the three
(3)). Three total, but not necessarily three consecutive.
The Polled Santa Gertrudis Association offers a scholarship for members of the Polled Santa Gertrudis
Association. Membership in the Polled Association is required for the current year.
Scholarship applications will only be accepted by mail or overnight delivery to SGBI Office.
No Faxed or E-mailed copies of the scholarship application will be accepted.
Graduating seniors applying for NSGYF scholarships are requested to attend the NSGJHS for the interview
process. Interviews will be conducted on Wednesday during the show. If a student is unable to attend the
scholarship interview during the heifer show, they must give the Foundation Chairman/Scholarship committee
14 days’ prior notice so arrangements can be made for an alternative interview. Emergencies are exempt.
Times are flexible as we know several junior members are involved in other activities. Once you receive notice
on your time and there is a problem, please notify SGBI at (361) 592-9357.

Better Beef Contest
The true purpose of any Santa Gertrudis heifer is to produce offspring for the production of beef. With this in mind, the
NJSGHS conducts the Better Beef Contest to raise awareness of beef quality in our breed, identify individual animals
with superior carcass attributes, and add data to our breed registry.
Heifers born from January 1, 2015 to June 30, 2015 (Classes 4-11) are eligible to be scanned, free of charge, and can
compete for the following monetary prizes:
Cash prizes will be given to exhibitors whose heifers score highest on the USDA grid which takes into account yield
grade, quality grade and weight per day of age. Awards will also be given to the heifers with the highest IMF (marbling)
score and the highest cutability (determined by ribeye area, body weight, and fat thickness). Star 5 heifers in the
appropriate age range will also have an opportunity to win a cash prize. Cattle that are not in the appropriate age range
can be scanned at cost which is $15/head.
Ultrasound scanning will take place on Saturday evening, June 18th at 7pm and also at check-in on Sunday, June 19th.
Exhibitors with eligible aged cattle are encouraged to participate, as not only will this provide important information on
the carcass quality of your heifer, but it will also aid our breed registry in acquiring valuable data. Please be advised that
the scan does require oil to be put on the back of the heifer while she is restrained in the
chute.
