That’s what I thought a successful marriage was: finding someone to serve you. That’s because I was a chauvinist. I thought men were better than women. Needless to say, the idea of me serving Karen was the farthest thing from my mind. It was a shock to me that she would even expect me to do anything. In John 13, Jesus is in the remaining hours before being crucified. He is eating a meal with His disciples. The disciples were having a conversation about which one of them was the greatest— they never were the sharpest knives in the drawer—when Jesus made an example of washing their feet. Remember, these guys spent all day wearing sandals on dusty roads. Their feet were filthy. Washing someone’s foot was a demeaning task, detestable to them. Humility. We’re naturally prideful. Both men and women have pride issues in their lives. We might be given tasks or asked to do things and we think, “I’m too good for that.” But that's an unhealthy attitude in marriage. Helping is about being involved with even the insignificant details of each other’s days. Jesus told them the servant was the greatest of all. That His followers were to be servants. They were stunned by both His example and His message. As followers of Christ, around friends, among strangers, and especially within our marriages, we are to be servants. We are to put others’ needs ahead of our own. Do the dishes. Wash the car. Fold clothes. Clean toilets. Give a foot rub. Nothing is beneath you if it benefits your spouse—even if you're wealthy. One of the worst marriages I've ever seen was a wealthy couple who wouldn't do anything for each other. Why? Because they always hired people to do any work for them. A husband and wife who constantly serve one another have discovered the secret of a great marriage. Why is serving each other so important? Equality. A person who refuses to serve his or her spouse is either dominating the relationship or has checked out emotionally. Men and women are absolutely equal. Serving your spouse— doing things in their interest, not yours—tells them “I am not better than you.” Intimacy. In Matthew 6, Jesus said, “Wherever your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” Where you invest yourself, that's where your passion will be. If you're pouring all your time and abilities into your work, or your children, or your Art of Marriage Connect C ongratulations to Anthony and Lacricia Barnes for taking the initiative to strengthen their marriage relationship by building a biblically based marriage. Mr. & Mrs. Barnes have completed the following HomeBuilders (renamed “The Art of Marriage Connect”) classes: Building Your Marriage to Last Improving Communication In Your Marriage Resolving Conflict in Your Marriage They are now enrolled in Mastering Money in Your Marriage. We are excited to have them as active participants of the Art of Marriage Connect Program. “A God-honoring Marriage is not created by finding a flawless spouse but by allowing God’s perfect love and acceptance to flow through an imperfect person (you) toward another imperfect person (your spouse).” 4 Jimmy and Karen Evans hobbies, that will become what you treasure most. Pour your time and abilities into serving your spouse, and he or she will capture your heart. Continually investing in each other means you stay passionate for each other. It means you’re sharing your life with each other. It brings you closer. Destiny. God decided it was not good for Adam to be alone. He created us for each other. I can’t achieve what God has planned for me without Karen. She can’t reach her full potential without me. Obviously God can do anything, but He put us in each other’s lives for a reason: to serve each other toward our destiny together. The best marriages are made of two servants in love. Put each other first and you'll discover the marriage of your dreams. I t was a beautiful summer evening in July – a small breeze moving in the air, birds singing, and neighbors out walking after dinner. Our 6-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter and I were strolling through our new neighborhood, having just moved into our first single family home a month earlier. Our son had just learned how to ride his bike without training wheels, and he was proudly riding on the sidewalk as our daughter and I walked behind him. As we came upon a house about a block from our home, the homeowner came out to greet us and welcome us to the neighborhood. We both had a son and daughter about the same ages, and we shared our delight with our new neighborhood and the abundance of children in it. As we stood in her driveway talking, she mentioned something that she had done in her kitchen and invited me in to look at. I welcomed the invitation, and thought to myself how blessed we were to have such wonderful neighbors. By Debora Plunkett son! I had left him riding his bike on the sidewalk and it was now almost dark! I rushed out of the house, looking both ways! I didn’t see him, and I panicked and began praying, on the verge of tears. What kind of mother am I? How could I leave my son? Where could he have gone that quickly? Did someone take him? Then I saw him, sitting on the curb about half a block away, his bike beside him, and his little head resting in dismay in his hands. I called him and ran to him to find him frightened, confused, scared. He didn’t quite know how to get home in this new neighborhood. He had lost us. Our daughter and I went into the house, leaving our son riding his bike on the sidewalk. We talked in her kitchen for apparently longer than I thought, for when I finally prepared to leave I noticed that it had begun to get dark. And then I remembered! Our 10 I comforted him, in tears with him. No, you didn’t lose me, I told him. I lost you. I neglected to take care of one of the two precious gifts God had given to me. I got caught up in the new neighborhood and forgot what matters so much more. Have you ever gotten so wrapped up in things that don’t really matter that you forget those that are most important? Perhaps focused too much on the temporary or the material, forgetting the lasting and eternal? I’m so glad that even when I’m feeling lost, (or in this case causing someone else to feel lost), the truth is that my Lord knows my whereabouts at all times. He continues to protect me, and to put his arm of protection around those whom I love. Oh how He loves me! John Newton’s song has a special place in my heart because of that summer night many years ago. Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, That saved a wretch like me, I once was lost, but now I’m found, Was blind but now I see! Praise God! Amazing Grace. John Newton (1725-1807) May 2015 If you would like to be a sponsor, forms are available in the Narthex. Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.” John 19: 26-27. E nduring the greatest pain and agony a human could experience, our Savior looks upon his mother and makes a declaration of love and provision. Could it be that honoring our mothers was established in that very moment? Anna Jarvis introduced Mother’s day in the sense that we celebrate it today. Anna spent many years caring for her ill mother and missed her dearly following her passing. She believed children neglected to appreciate their mothers while they were alive and she initiated a campaign to establish a National Mother’s Day. On May 9, 1914, a presidential proclamation declared the second Sunday of May to be observed as Mother’s Day. It was during the first observance that the carnations were introduced by Miss Jarvis. Large vases of white carnations were set about the platform where the service was conducted. At the end of the ceremony a white carnation was given to each person present as a souvenir of Mother’s Day by Florence T. Johnson because Miss Jarvis’ mother was fond of carnations. dynamic creative life filled with love and joy. Mother’s Day is celebrated on various days in many places around the world. It is a day when you acknowledge your mother’s contribution in your life and pay tribute to her, often with flowers and gifts.
