VOCES LATINAS
VOCES LATINAS
President’s Message From Nancy De La Reza
“Fellow Toastmasters and most
welcomed guests...” I look forward to hearing
those words as a Voces Latinas member takes the
podium to address our club. The speech could
be a first time Ice Breaker, wrapped in sweaty
palms and a racing heart, or a presentation with
grace and ease by a veteran speaker preparing to
receive their Distinguished Toastmasters badge.
More than likely, the speech will be something
in between those two milestones, but I know those words will always
encourage, inspire and teach.
Voces Latinas has been described “Voces
Latinas has
by its members as a family, and I
grown by leaps and
agree. We are a family and we certainly care about each other. We bounds in the past year.”
care enough to tell each other the
truth, and to offer guidance as to how to improve our public speaking.
One of the best ways to reach your goals is to surround yourself with
like-minded people, with similar goals. If your goal is to become proficient at public speaking, Voces Latinas is the place to be.
Just in the past month, we’ve welcomed over ten new guests, five of
whom have become Voces Latinas members. I believe this is due to the
feeling of camaraderie that is felt at each meeting. I hope to continue
to see every one of you at our meetings, and encourage you to bring
a friend. Most likely they too will enjoy hearing, “Fellow Toastmasters
and most welcomed guests…”

TM Leadership Institute Goes
Beyond Public Speaking
“Seminars like “Conquering the Fear
Factor” and “Networking, Necessary but not Evil” introduced me to
skills that I have started applying
to my professional and personal
life. Hearing Lance Miller, the 2005
World Champion of Public Speaking, deliver an inspirational speech
about his path to success was the
icing on the cake.”
Alma Guzman
VL Member
“This event opened my mind and
showed me how to run effective
meetings in order to have a more
organized group at Voces Latinas.
The workshop I enjoyed the most
was one that taught me how to be a
stronger evaluator in order to give
helpful feedback in meetings."
Lance Miller, the 2005 World Champion of Public Speaking, joins VL officers and members at the
Toastmaster Leadership Institute. From left to right: Dan Reza, Remi Mateo, Lance Miller, Nancy

ore than 75 members throughout District 52 attended the 2012 Toastmasters Leadership Institute on Saturday, Jan. 21, at Glendale Community College. Voces Latinas represented our club with several officers and members attending to hear keynote speaker, Lance Miller, DTM, recount his path to
becoming the 2005 World Champion of Public Speaking.

The training consisted of an officers training explaining the roles and responsibilities of club leaders to ensure our Toastmasters group continues to gain
membership and usher members through public speaking and leadership
manuals. Seminars on networking, conquering the fear factor and using performance techniques on stage were also provided.

Speaking Tips
By Lance Miller
Practicing and Drilling:
• Drill your speech like you will
give it.
•
Drill your speech 'to' something, not 'in your head.'
•
Do not stop and correct yourself, roll through your mistakes.
•
Pick the number of times you
will drill and then drill that

number of times.
•
Don't try to be perfect, drill to
be real and effective.
•
Drill different ways, fast, slow,
loud, soft, etc., so you have a
free range to express yourself.

STAR SPEAKERS
CORNER
How have you grown as a communicator and leader as a result of Voces Latinas
Toastmasters Club?
When I first walked through those doors, I was a wallflower with big hopes and dreams.
A girl who was uncertain of what I believed in and who I was as a person.
I didn't think that my opinion counted and never did I dare share it with anyone. Voces Latinas
Has helped me find my voice and develop my leadership.
What do you like best about our club?
Margo De Leon
DTM, Voces Latinas Officer,
Past President
Member since 2003
When I think of Voces Latinas the first thing that comes to my mind is camaraderie, teamwork
and Familia. I know that the relationships that I have built here will be lifelong friendships.
Now that you have come this far, what is your next step?
I have the privilege working with the youth and parents as a mentor and life coach for the
past five years. Teaching them to work through their challenges and gaining the confidence
they need to accomplish and make their dreams a reality.
How have you grown as a communicator and leader as a result of Voces Latinas?
Through Voces Latinas I have blossomed into a dynamic speaker, leader and consultant. I
used to be petrified when speaking in public. Now, I feel more confident, energized and motivated to allow my voice to be heard. The experience has been rewarding.
What do you like best about our club?
Voces Latinas has stretched me to grow in directions that I didn’t think possible. They are honest, supportive and provide constructive feedback. I have come to appreciate the mix of these
special ingredients because they have paved the way for my continued journey and growth.

What is the most important thing you would tell your friends and family about
Voces Latinas Toastmasters?
Voces Latinas feels like family. Everyone is loving, caring and fun! Nevertheless, we understand the true meaning of accountability, progress and success. We understand that it takes
a village to raise a great speaker and that’s exactly why we are all here.
