YMCA Summer Camps 2014
St. Catharines - Niagara Falls - Welland
Registration opens Monday, March 10!
Director’s & GM’s Messages
Welcome to YMCA of Niagara
Summer Day Camp! As I child,
I was a camper myself so I
know first hand the positive
impact a camp experience can
have. A quality program can
help children learn skills and
values that they will carry with
them in the future.
At all YMCA Day Camps,
children and youth will have
fun while developing and learning new skills in a safe
environment. We have a number of different types of
camps to offer this summer, and while participating in a
week of YMCA Day Camps, all children will:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Participate in the daily recommended 60 minutes
of moderate to vigorous physical activity.
Develop fundamental movement skills though a
variety of activities every day.
Increase their social skills by making new friends
at camp as well as see their counsellor as a role
model.
Be challenged to learn new skills throughout the
week.
Develop their character.
Have fun at camp.
Feel safe and included at camp.
All programs are strategically structured and facilitated
by trained camp staff that are here to make your child’s
experience an unforgettable one. Join us this summer to
create memories that will last a lifetime.
I am very excited to be back in
camp this summer, and have
the opportunity to apply the
knowledge I gained working
in other YMCA departments.
Thanks to valuable feedback
received from parents,
campers and staff we are
constantly working to
enhance our programs to
ensure that YMCA campers
have the best possible camp
experience. Here are a few of the things we are focusing
on this summer:
Program Quality
• We are developing outcome based program plans
that will ensure programmed camp activities meet
a specific objective (i.e. skill development)
• Utilizing YMCA Healthy Child and Adolescent
Development frameworks, YMCA camps will be
even more camper focused
Staff Development
• We are revamping our pre camp training program
to continue to meet the needs of our diverse staff
team
• Camp staff will receive training in physical
literacy and how to assist campers in developing
fundamental movement skills, and the confidence
necessary to be active for life
You will have to come to camp to find out all the other
amazing things we have planned!
Looking forward to seeing you at camp this summer,
Katrina D’Intino

Day Camp the YMCA Way
We Hire Role Models
What’s New?
This summer, we are excited to have a variety
of new camps and programs available! We’ve
brought some of our favourite camps to new locations and are introducing a few brand new camps!
We’re introducing Future Leaders, a brand new
camp designed to get our young campers active and inspired. We’re also excited to introduce
Tumbling camp as a variation on Dance and
Cheerleading camps that will focus on coordination and balance skills. Some of our most popular
specialty camps will also be running in new locations throughout Niagara. For more information,
visit ymcadaycamp.ca
We are also excited to announce new partnerships with community organizations across
Niagara that will further improve the quality of
our day camp programs. A few include:
The Creative Bug
4 Cats Art Studio
Little Kickers Soccer Program
Niagara Knights
Niagara Falls Art Gallery
To ensure high quality leadership at YMCA Camps,
all staff and volunteers are carefully selected based
on their maturity, experiences and ability to role
model YMCA values.
All YMCA staff hold current First Aid/CPR-C certification and Criminal Reference Check. Our staff are
trained in YMCA Healthy Child Development frameworks and Asset Building approaches. They also
receive training in program planning and behaviour
management techniques.
We Create a Safe &
Supportive Environment
At Day Camp, we provide a healthy, safe and secure environment for all participants. We are a fully
integrated Day Camp that values diversity and the
differences that form our camp community.
Behavior Guidelines
All campers:
•
•
•
•
•
•
are responsible for their actions
will respect each other and their environment
should be honest and true to their word
will care for themselves and those around them
will make healthy and safe choices
will value diversity and seek to include others
It’s All About the
Value Beads...
At YMCA Day Camp, value beads play
an important role as a sign of character
and personal achievement. As a form
of recognition, beads at camp promote
positive behaviour, and are worn as a
constant reminder of what we value as a
camp community. Throughout the week,
beads are awarded to individuals for
demonstrating the YMCA core values of
friendship, caring, honesty, inclusiveness,
health, responsibility, respect, leadership
and excellence.

At YMCA Day Camp kids
play outdoors!
“Spending time outdoors is essential to every
child’s development, health and well-being.
It builds a connection to our rich natural
and cultural heritage. Kids connected to
nature grow up caring for the Earth and
helping to conserve biodiversity.”

Our goal is to provide every child with the opportunity to experience adventure in an outdoor setting.
Exploration of nature increases children’s creativity and imagination, while developing an appreciation
for the world around them. Outdoor Adventure Camps are structured in a unique way to offer campers a
residential camp experience without leaving their city.

At YMCA Day Camp kids
are physically active!
“Canadian children spend on average 8.6 hours
or 62% of their waking hours a day being inactive. In fact, only 5% of Canadian children and
youth are meeting the new Canadian Physical
Activity Guidelines.”

development. While participating in camp, all campers have the opportunity to meet or exceed the
daily recommended guidelines of 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity per day.
Campers will gain confidence in their ability to participate in a variety of recreational and sport activities
through activities focused at developing their fundamental movement skills; and have the opportunity to

on help from the YMCA Strong Kids
Campaign to get the opportunity to
go to YMCA Day Camp. Your gift to the
Strong Kids Campaign will change the
