Donohue KEYNOTE SPEAKER & President & CEO, U.S. Chamber of Lifetime Achievement Award Commerce T homas J. Donohue is President and CEO of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Since assuming his position in 1997, Donohue has built the Chamber into a $200 million a year lobbying and political powerhouse with expanded influence across the globe. Donohue has committed to advancing the U.S. Chamber’s comprehensive competitiveness agenda, which is designed to strengthen the U.S. economy so that all hardworking Americans can prosper and enjoy the benefits of the American Dream. He has launched a number of multimillion-dollar initiatives around several items on that agenda, including forging a national energy strategy, strengthening capital markets, and protecting intellectual property. Donohue established the U.S. Chamber Institute for Legal Reform, which has won significant legal reforms in the courts, at the state and federal levels, and in elections for state attorneys general and Supreme Court judges. During Donohue’s tenure, the Chamber’s lobbyists, policy experts, and communicators have helped secure many legislative victories, including major tax cuts, more sensible workplace and environmental regulations, and increased funding for transportation. On the international front, the Chamber has become a leader in knocking down trade barriers, winning new free and fair trade agreements, and fighting isolationism at home and abroad. Under Donohue’s leadership, the Chamber has also emerged as a major player in election politics, helping elect congressional pro-business candidates through financial support and voter activism and turnout generated through the Chamber’s grassroots organization, VoteForBusiness.com. The National Chamber Litigation Center, the Chamber’s law firm, has become more aggressive in challenging anti-business measures in court. In 2007, it entered a record 125 new cases of significance to the business community and helped secure 54 victories. The Litigation Center expects to beat that record in 2008. The National Chamber Foundation, the Chamber’s public policy think tank, drives the policy debate on key issues and provides a forum where leaders advance cutting-edge issues facing the U.S. business community. Financially, the Chamber has never been stronger. Since 1997, when Donohue took over, revenues have more than tripled. Donohue has also raised millions of dollars for a special capital fund to help secure the Chamber’s financial future. Previously, Donohue served for 13 years as president and chief executive officer of the American Trucking Associations, the national organization of the trucking industry. Donohue serves on two corporate boards of directors-Union Pacific Corporation and Sunrise Senior Living Corporation. He is a member of the President’s Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations. In addition, Donohue is president of the Center for International Private Enterprise, a program of the National Endowment for Democracy dedicated to the development of marketoriented institutions around the world. Born in New York City in 1938, Donohue earned a bachelor’s degree from St. John’s University and a master’s degree in business administration from Adelphi University. He holds honorary doctorate degrees from Adelphi, St. John’s, and Marymount universities. Donohue and his wife, Liz, live in Potomac, Maryland. They have three sons and three grandchildren. Kazeminy, Chairman CONGRATULATES The Duchess of Abercorn for her achievements and contributions to humanity THE DUCHESS OF ABERCORN Patron, The Pushkin Trust S acha, Duchess of Abercorn was born in the United States to a father of Anglo-Peruvian descent, and on her mother’s side a descendant of Tsar Nicholas I of Russia and the poet Alexander Pushkin. Sacha Abercorn was educated in England, and married James Hamilton, subsequent Duke of Abercorn, whose family home is at Barons Court in Country Tyrone, Northern Ireland. Her eldest son Jamie was born in 1969 just as “the Troubles” were beginning. Trained as a counselor in Jungian depth psychology, Sacha Abercorn conducted psychological workshops in both Northern Ireland and the Republic. She was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Ulster in 1993, and that same year, a book of her poems, Feather from the Firebird, was published. In 1986, the Duchess and her family presided over a commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the death of their ancestor, Alexander Pushkin. Inspired by the creative spirit of the gathering, the Duchess worked with key people in her local education board and its equivalent in the Republic, and initiated a creative writing program for school children – The Pushkin Prizes. Anchored in the school system, the program was designed to help children across the whole of Ireland “find a voice”. By encouraging children to write stories and poems, it brought together children from Catholic and Protestant schools from both sides of the border. Over the last eighteen years, thousands of children and teachers have participated in the program, expressing thoughts and feelings in creative mediums and joining their individual voices in an island-wide chorus. A similar project has been established in Russia among schools in Saint Petersburg. Thus, children from two nations have been sharing their experiences. They have helped to enrich each other through the imagination as well as through reciprocal visits. Sacha Abercorn and the Pushkin Trust wish to see creativity and development of imagination in children accorded a central place in the education system and social system as a whole, with all of Ireland’s children granted the opportunity to lead life to the fullest, and in pursuit of imagination in education, will share a common goal, regardless of political, geographical or religious affiliations. By using non-traditional educational approaches to youth leadership, the programme will inspire and challenge the young participants. This non-formal approach recognises that while traditional education is extremely important, it is often an experience that happens outside the class-room that fuels the passion of individuals and motivates them to become more than they thought they could be. A number of guest speakers appeared at the conference to inspire the young participants. These included: Jacqueline Murekatete, a human rights activist and genocide survivor from Rwanda. n Dylan Haskins, 22 year old Dubliner who owns an independent record label n Galway hurler, Alan Kerins, founder of The Alan Kerins African Projects supporting initiatives in South Africa n Pádraig O’Ceidigh, Managing Director of Aer Arann. n The ICCUSA Foundation Inc. and Foróige, Ireland’s largest National Youth Development Organisation launched the inaugural International Youth Leadership Conference in Ireland on August 17th at Trinity College Dublin. The Albert Schweitzer’s Leadership for Life program was a week long education program for young people from 6 diverse countries around the world who have demonstrated leadership potential in their communities. The program offers a pioneering approach in youth leadership by helping young global citizens develop the skills, vision and confidence to become the next generation of innovative leaders. 2009 Albert Schweitzer’s Leadership for Life® Nuturing the Next Generation of Leaders An international delegation of over 220 young people aged between 15 and 18 from the US, South Korea, Nigeria, England, Northern Ireland and the Republic 46 American Celtic Ball of Ireland attended the conference. Each delegate was nominated to attend by a youth worker or volunteer leader who recognised their spirited desire to become active leaders in their own communities. Speaking at the Opening Ceremonies Maurice Buckley, International Chairman, ASLFL “[The ASLFL] is delighted to partner with Foróige, Ireland’s leading youth development organization, in bringing this inaugural international youth leadership programme to Ireland. Our future will need courageous leadership to make our world a more prosperous, peaceful and all inclusive place to live. Our partnership with Foróige identifies the future stewards of our globe and we are committed to supporting these young leaders in the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.” The program is a partnership between Foróige and ICCUSA Foundation Inc. and is joined by international partners; Co-operation Ireland, HOBY and HOBY UK. We are extremely grateful for the immense support from our Founding Sponsors; Mark Pigott, Nasser Kazeminy, Bombardier and Pfizer. www.aschweitzer.org Participants at the conference were encouraged to develop a ‘can do’ attitude. They attended workshops each day to improve their communication, problem solving, personal and team work skills and learn the art of critical analysis thinking. The young delegates were also encouraged to venture beyond their own personal comfort zones and perceived capabilities to realise their full potential as leaders of the future. They had the opportunity to discuss and debate matters of global importance including social, economic and environmental issues and an appreciation of multiculturalism. American Celtic Ball 47 ICCUSA The Leading Networking Organization Between Ireland and The USA T wenty one years ago, few individuals realized that there was no Chamber of Commerce representing Ireland in the United States and vice-a-versa to open the doors for US companies in Ireland. The decision took place to form the Ireland Chamber of Commerce at a time when Ireland’s unemployment was at over 20% and basically it was an agricultural and tourist driven economy. Over the last decade that has changed dramatically and the American investment in Ireland has been one of the driving forces. However, we all realize that by capitalizing on the most educated young people in Europe, opportunities would lie ahead. It is interesting to know now that Ireland is the 9th largest customer for American products and services. Added to this there are equally the same number of Americans employed in Irish companies based in America as there are American companies based in Ireland. We would like to feel that we played some small part in this success story. Our objectives are: •provide a forum for the development of business relations between Ireland the United States • encourage and facilitate a business exchange of information, ideas and expertise between Ireland the United States • development of economic, commercial, financial and educational relationships on both sides of the Atlantic • works closely with Chambers Ireland, Northern Ireland, Liverpool Chambers of Commerce & Industry, other International Chambers of Commerce and governmental organizations to promote trade, visits and conferences between the United States and Ireland • ”Launched The ICCUSA Foundation Inc in 2008 and support our flagship program: The Albert Schweitzer’s Leadership for Life program, which hosted its inaugural international youth leadership conference in Dublin on August 17-21, 2009. Our strategic international partner is Foroige. Please visit www.aschweitzer. org • Additionally, ICCUSA continues to support various Irish and international charities alike such as: Concern Worldwide, Haven Foundation in Haiti, CINI (Child in Need Institute in India) and the Irish Arts Center. We have established a strategic partnership with Chambers Ireland Ireland’s largest business organization representing over 13,000 business members through its network of 59 chambers of commerce on the island of Ireland.
