Spiritual and Moral Education
As a Christian college, we place a strong emphasis on nurturing the spiritual growth
of our students. Through daily morning assemblies, Religious Studies lessons and
Christian Fellowship programmes, the practice of Christian education is enhanced. This
year, Rev Christine Ho of St. Paul’s Church was appointed part-time School Chaplain to
provide pastoral care to our students, support the work of the Christian Fellowship and
help to officiate at our Advent and Lenten Services. At these services a sum of $19,718
was collected and donated to 19 local voluntary organizations. Our staff and students
also expressed our love and concern for the needy by donating $53,670 and $36,222 to
the Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Archbishop Relief Fund to help the earthquake victims
in Haiti and Qinghai respectively.
At Christmas, the College followed the tradition of holding our Carol Service at St.
John’s Cathedral with the Rev Bartholomew Ma as the preacher. Our Ascension Day
Service was also held at the Cathedral with the very Rev Andrew Chan delivering the
sermon. Apart from these regular services, a series of activities, which included talks on
“Science, Faith & God” and “Darwinism or Design?”, “Amazing Race” which was a
7
school orienteering event, a faith sharing luncheon, a religious book exhibition and a
handicraft workshop, were organised in the Religious Week from 21 to 30 October 2009.
To revisit the school motto of “Faith, Hope and Love”, the theme of the Christian
Fellowship this year was “Hope for Today”. In addition to the regular gatherings,
morning prayer meetings, cell groups, and TueStation, our Tuesday luncheon Bible study
meetings, were held to provide our students with a supportive environment for spiritual
growth.
To develop our students into confident individuals, lifelong learners and responsible
global citizens, a wide range of activities was organised. This year the College continued
to collaborate with the Baptist Oi Kwan Social Service to organise a Growth Group for
Actualizing Potential for 39 students from Form 1 to Form 3. It comprised two
components: self improvement and graffiti and visual arts.
Other programmes organised during the year included talks on anti-corruption, sex
education, anti-drugs, perfectionism and stress management. Speakers invited to deliver
the talks were from the ICAC, Department of Health, Jireh Fund, L.E.A.P., Hong Kong
Eating Disorders Association, Touch Counselling Centre and Kely Support Group.
Developmental programmes were jointly organised with the Department of Health
and the Centre for Suicide Research and Prevention for Form 1 and Form 2 students
during the Form Teacher Periods. Form teachers also designed various developmental
activities focusing on the Personal, Moral and Social Framework.
In order to help Form 1 students adapt to school life at SPCC, the Big Brothers and
Big Sisters Scheme was organised. A Play Sharing Practice Group was also formed by 40
Form 1 students. Activities in the group included lunchtime gatherings and sharing, social
services, an overnight camp and outdoor activities, which aimed to enhance the
communication skills and emotional stability of the students.
Extra-Curricular Activities and Enrichment Programmes
Self-organised extra-curricular activities have always been an important component
of students’ education. These activities not only allow students to join programmes of
their own choice, but also enable them to learn about leadership and teamwork, as well as
undergo gratifying and rewarding experiences. A list of extra-curricular activities offered
is given in Table 1.
The College also organised other programmes to suit the students’ individual needs.
For example, leadership programmes, such as the Harvard Model Congress Asia in
January 2010 and the Singapore Leadership Convention in June 2010, were offered to
students of different forms. Study tours to various places, including mainland China,
Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, the US and the UK, were offered to our Form 2 to
Form 6 students.
The important highlight of our student programmes, Student Activities Week, was
organised from 21 to 29 November 2009. Lessons were suspended for Form 1 to Form 4
8
and Form 6 so that the students could take part in different activities: Form 1 Life
Education Programme, Form 2 Cultural Trip to Beijing, Form 3 Study Trip to Nansha,
Form 4 Outward Bound Leadership Programme, F4 Community Service Project and
Form 6 attachment programmes to tertiary institutions and business organizations, which
aimed to develop students’ understanding of professional fields. Enrichment programmes
for all forms were organised three times a year to further enrich students’ knowledge and
experience in different areas. Activities included talks by professionals and renowned
personnel related to environmental protection, science, culture, and moral and civic
education. Outings and field trips were also organised by teachers.
Our Swimming Gala was held on 2 October 2009 at Victoria Park Swimming Pool
with Dr Philip Leong, Chairman of the SPCC Alumni Association, being the guest of
honour for the prize presentation. Our annual Sports Day was held on 22 September 2009
at Siu Sai Wan Sports Ground with Mrs Seto Tay Cheo Lian, a retired SPCC teacher,
being the guest of honour presenting the prizes.
Form 1 students were introduced to track and field events on the Athletics Activities
Day on 14 January 2010 while Form 2 students had the opportunity to try out various
sports on 30 April 2010. These sports included tenpin bowling, lawn bowls, archery,
orienteering, hockey, hiking and sports climbing. However, the Interest Group Activities
Day for Form 3 students was cancelled this year since the amber rainstorm warning was
issued on the day of the event.
To allow students to make better use of their summer vacation, a Summer Sports
Training Programme was arranged for all students. This year, activities included
basketball, fencing, squash, swimming, dance (hip hop), badminton, and table tennis.
Intensive training was provided for members of the school teams, including basketball,
badminton, fencing, soccer, swimming and table tennis.
The year 2009/2010 was another eventful one for the music makers in the College.
The objectives of our music education programme are to realize the music potential of
each and every student, nurture a lifelong passion for music, uphold our rich musical
tradition, strive relentlessly for artistic excellence and broaden our students’ horizons in
the humanities through music making.
In the 62nd Hong Kong Schools Music Festival in 2010, the Treble Choir, Senior
Mixed Choir, Orchestra, Harmonica Orchestra and Ensembles earned 2 firsts, 3 seconds
and 2 thirds in the group events. Most notably, our School Orchestra won the senior
orchestra class for the first time.
In the international arena, the Treble Choir and the Senior Mixed Voice Choir
participated in the 6th World Choir Games in Shaoxing, China in July, and won a silver
medal in the Champion Class and a Gold Diploma in the Open Class respectively. The
SMVC was also the Winner of the Mixed Youth Choirs Category. The Harmonica
Orchestra participated in the 8th Asia Pacific Harmonica Festival in Singapore in July,
and was crowned the Champion of the Youth Harmonica Orchestra class and won a silver
medal in the Youth harmonica Ensemble category.
9
Talented young musicians from the College received top honours in local and
international competitions: Lau Cheuk Hay Sanders (7C) won the Barbara Fei Vocal
Scholarship in the 62nd Hong Kong Schools Music Festival; So Wai Lung (1F) was a
finalist representing Hong Kong in the 2009 Steinway Youth Piano Competition. The
recipients of the Young Talents Scholarship (Music), together with other enthusiastic
music makers, have also been engaged in some chamber music making, and collectively
performed in a lunchtime recital at St. John’s Cathedral in May, and at the Hong Kong
Space Museum in June.
In anticipation of the 95th Anniversary celebration, the Treble Choir and the Concert
Choir have recorded a selection of sacred music, including a new commissioned piece,
“Ye Did It Unto Me” by renowned Hong Kong composer, Professor Chan Wai Kwong
Victor. The CD will be released in the autumn of 2010.
Student Union
The Student Union (SU) has continued to strive for excellence and to provide the
best services for students in order to enhance the quality of school life. The first JointClub Recruitment Day helped clubs and societies to recruit new members in a more
effective and efficient manner. A total of two Student Posts were published and the
blockbuster events this year included the brand new Teacher-Student Carnival, the
Apprentice programme, a Karaoke Competition – Le Chanteur, Open Forums and the
Christmas Masquerade.
The SU upgraded the Opinion Programme by placing thought-provoking questions
and materials around the school to inspire students to come up with creative and practical
suggestions. To enhance the school's excellence and to raise its global visibility, the SU
was involved with the application for the school to become a regional member of the
Round Square, an international network of more than 60 schools that share the same
vision for holistic education.
In an effort to provide a greener learning environment, the SU collaborated with
other student bodies to produce reusable water bottles and to recycle old books and
clothes. The SU also made two very successful appeals for donations to help the
earthquake victims in Haiti and Qinghai.

Achievements in Extra-curricular Activities
It was most gratifying to see many of our students winning awards and excelling in
various inter-school competitions. We wish to congratulate the winners as well as all
those who have participated and all of those who provided support. The trophies and
recognition are a reflection of the high morale among our students, the commitment of
teachers and participants, and the generous funding from the College. For a list of student
achievements, please refer to Table 2.
11
Campus Improvement
Secondary School Phase 1 Redevelopment is in full swing and the progress is
generally on schedule. The demolition, site formation and foundation work were
completed in March 2010. The superstructure will be completed in December 2010.
Internal partitioning work has commenced and the teaching section will be handed over
to the school by the end of June 2011 so that the teachers can move in in time for the new
academic year in September 2011.
Detailed Design Consultants have been appointed for Phase 2 Redevelopment. Preconstruction work, i.e. a site investigation and a structural survey were carried out during
the summer holiday. Statutory submissions to the government are in progress. A heritage
consultant has been engaged to prepare the Heritage Impact Assessment submission for
the Antiquities and Monument Office regarding construction work to the Grade II
Historical Red Brick Building. Construction work is scheduled from 2011 to 2013 once
the designated school facilities are relocated to the new extension block in 2011.
Involvement of Parents and Alumni
This year saw parents' continuous and enthusiastic support for the School,
furthering our collaboration in providing a quality, holistic education to our students.
Please refer to Table 3 for details of the activities of the Parent-Teacher Association.
The Alumni Association continued to play an important role in strengthening our
ties with alumni and in helping to contribute to the School's development. For a summary
of their activities during the year, please refer to Table 4.
Donations to Charitable Causes and Fund-raising Campaign
Being a Christian school, we have always attached great importance to caring and
sharing. On the Dress Special Day on 30 September 2009, we raised a total of $46,463
for the Community Chest. Twice in the year, we collected donations from our students
and staff to be distributed to the following charitable organizations:
Oxfam, the Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Diocesan Welfare Council, St. John’s
Cathedral, the Spastic Association of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Anti-Cancer
Society, the Boys’ and Girls’ Club Association, the Hong Kong Tuberculosis, Chest
and Heart Diseases Association, St. James’ Settlement, the Hong Kong Red Cross,
St. John Ambulance Association and Brigade, the Society for the Relief of Disabled
Children, the Children’s Cancer Foundation, Unicef, Sowers Action, Jireh Fund,
Cedar Fund, Samaritan’s Purse, Heifer and Crossroads International.
The Council of St. Paul’s Co-educational College Charitable Trust organised its 10th
Walkathon on the Peak on 1 November 2009. With the enthusiastic support of parents,
staff, alumni and students, a total of HK$2,330,247 was raised.
12
Major Tasks Accomplished
1.
Holistic, developmental and experiential learning in the four dimensions of
Leadership and Community Service; Language and Culture; Humanities,
Science and Mathematics; Aesthetics and Creativity
Leadership and Community Service
Form 1 students enjoyed a safe and engaging outdoor learning programme with
Asia Pacific Adventure. Form 2 students travelled to Beijing for a language skills
development programme in association with the University of Hong Kong. This
programme had been significantly re-designed to provide better opportunities for students
to practise and develop their Putonghua language skills by completing urban-based
problem-solving tasks and by interviewing local people. In Form 3 we completed a
successful Nansha study trip in collaboration with the Hong Kong University of Science
and Technology and this programme has developed a strong curriculum link with Liberal
Studies. In Form 4 we continued our long-standing relationship with Outward Bound
with Form 4 students completing a 5-day mobile expedition programme. In alignment
with the evolution of the Rites of Passage (RoP) programme, students who attended the
initial pilot programme did not attend Outward Bound; they were engaged in a 5-day
community service project with Crossroads International. Form 6 students were able to
choose from a variety of business and university attachment programmes across a diverse
range of sectors.
Our Form 1 to Form 3 community service attachments were conducted with the
Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden, St. James Settlement Elderly Services and the
Saviour Lutheran School for students with learning disabilities.
Rites of Passage
This was the second Rites of Passage programme with 83 students challenging
themselves for 28 days in Queensland, Australia through a variety of experiences
focusing around the following four key components: community living, outdoor
experiential activities, expeditions and enquiry learning. The programme was well
aligned with the school’s Personal, Moral and Social Framework and significantly
challenged the students both physically and emotionally. In preparation for the delivery
of the first full cohort in 2012 the programme was split across two campuses with all the
logistical arrangements running smoothly and students’ evaluations reporting a consistent
learning experience across the two residential campuses.
Round Square
The school was formally recognized as a regional member of the Round Square
organization. The Round Square is an international network of schools that aim to
provide an education that is in line with the thinking of Kurt Hahn. This can be
summarized as the IDEALS, standing for a commitment to Internationalism, Democracy,
Environmentalism, Adventure, Leadership and Service. SPCC sees this membership as a
natural progression in its commitment to a holistic education and sees the IDEALS

working alongside our Personal, Moral and Social Framework to define the practical
implementation of our values. This membership will not only broaden our international
network, but will also increase our opportunities for exchange and to participate in
international service projects.
Language and Culture
Foreign Language Studies
In 2009/2010, we offered two streams of foreign language programmes to students:
Programme A for interest and Programme B for academic pursuit.
We had two Year 1 Spanish/Arabic classes, three Year 2 Spanish classes and one
Year 3 Arabic class on weekdays after school. They focused on exposing students to the
Spanish and Arabic cultures through the basics of these languages.
For Programme B, we offered two Foundation Spanish classes and one Foundation
French class on Mondays and Saturdays. The purpose of these classes was to build up
students’ foundation in the two languages, thus paving the way for foreign language
studies in senior secondary. We also had one IGCSE Spanish 1 class and one IGCSE
Spanish 2 (NSS AS Spanish) class. Students in the latter took their IGCSE Spanish
examination in May 2009. Eight of the eleven candidates achieved the highest banding,
A*.
Culture Salon
The theme for 2009/2010 was < 中 學 生 的 文 化 眼 界 > (Cultural Perspectives of
Secondary Students). This was organised on two levels: guest speakers were invited to
share their view on the above-mentioned theme with the whole school during morning
assemblies; mini-salons and 同好小組 (‘Enthusiasts Circles’) were held for like-minded
students who shared similar cultural interests.
Aesthetics and Creativity
Teachers in charge of the Aesthetics and Creativity Education programme, together
with the Language and Culture Working Group, organized various activities for students.
A group of five Form 2 and Form 3 students participated in the ‘18 Districts ID Design
Competition’ this year, which was the 2nd Arts Ambassadors-in-school sponsored by The
Hong Kong Arts Development Council. They won the 1st runner-up and 2nd runner-up for
logo design and poster design respectively. A prize-giving ceremony was held at Queen
Elizabeth Stadium in July and their artwork was exhibited at Lok Fu Square in August.
The College also joined the scheme, Artwork on Loan, which was implemented by
the Hong Kong Arts Development Council and the Leisure and Cultural Services
Department. Twenty pieces of reproduced artwork created by Hong Kong artists were
borrowed to put on display around our campus. We held the 1st Students’ Joint-exhibition
in May. Eleven students from Form 1 to Form 6 displayed more than 50 pieces of
artwork at the exhibition.
14
Other activities offered to students included a talk on “Appreciation of Drama” by
the four founders of the R&D Theatre, an introduction to “Le French May Arts Festival”
by the Chief Executive Officer of the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and
Macau and an interview by four students from Form 2 to Form 4 with Alice Mak, a
famous artist in Hong Kong who created McDull and McMug.
The Odyssey of the Mind Competition was held in March 2010 at the Hong Kong
Institute of Education. A team of seven Form 4 students participated in Division III,
Classical Problem – “Discovered Treasures” and was ranked seventh overall.
2.
Planning and preparation for the Senior Secondary Curriculum (NSS) and
International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP)
For the cohort of students promoting to S4 in 2010-2011, we are able to offer them
a total of 45 subject combinations for the New Senior Secondary Curriculum, each
consisting of three elective subjects with Music, Spanish or French as a fourth elective. A
briefing was held in December 2009 for Form 3 students and parents; they also received
an NSS Information booklet. Relevant information was uploaded to the school’s intranet.
In the allocation of subject choices, 93.3% of the students were allocated to either their
first preference (81.0%) or their most preferred option without the Mathematics extended
module (12.3%).
Funding for teachers’ professional development on NSS was provided from the
Teacher Professional Preparation Grant and the New Senior Secondary Curriculum
Migration Grant of the Education Bureau.
Having been given the International Baccalaureate Candidate Status, the school has
continued to prepare itself educationally and administratively for the implementation of
the diploma programme. The teacher-designates have continued to receive IB-approved
professional training. An in-school IBDP workshop on TOK Across the Curriculum was
held on 16 and 17 April 2010 for 25 teachers from various disciplines. During these two
days participants were encouraged to compare approaches to knowledge and were shown
that good TOK teachers understand that different subjects emphasize different ways of
knowing.
Internal applicants for the IBDP will enter the IB Preparatory Year in Form 4 to
ensure a solid grounding for the programme. Interested students were given academic
counselling and were considered for the programme based on motivation, intellectual
curiosity and learning style, which the school believes, are essential for success in the IB
programme. Comprehensive course outlines, policy documents and timetable for the Prep
Year and the IBDP have been developed. 2009/2010 was a busy year of preparation for
the pre-authorization and authorization visits.
3.
Student Development
Catering for differentiated needs and capabilities of students
A Personalized Learning Core Group which consists of teachers mainly from the
15
Key Learning Areas and Moral Education was formed to manage a Personalized Learning
Database of high and low achievers, gifted students and students with learning difficulties.
This database was compiled using behavioural characteristic checklists and observations.
Enrichment programmes were organised for all students e.g. Student Activities Week,
Junior Science Curriculum, Public Speaking Workshop. For some selected students, there
was after-school training on Mathematics, Physics, Biology, Chemistry and Science
competitions and projects. Two Form 1 and two Form 2 students who have been
identified as exceptionally gifted in music were pulled out from normal music lessons to
attend tailor-made programmes.
In addition, six exceptionally gifted students in Mathematics, two in Humanities,
four in Science and three in Leadership were nominated to join the after-school
enrichment programmes organised by the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education.
Making students partners in learning
In order to promote both active learning and the taking of responsibility for their
own learning, students were asked to use the Student Learning Journal to set short-term
and long-term goals, and to evaluate and analyze their progress at the end of each term.
Form teachers made use of this reflective journal to discuss with students their
performance and it has proved to be a useful tool.
Development and implementation of the Personal, Moral and Social (PMS) Framework
To promote understanding of the PMS Framework, the Framework was used by
teachers to design the Form Teacher Periods, by the Discipline Team to counsel students,
and by clubs and societies as a reference when writing their mission statements. It was
also used as a functional tool to embed the objectives into students’ educational
experiences in the Student Activities Week, Community Service and Rites of Passage
Programme.
4.
Enhancement of teacher professional development and personal wellness
Apart from the workshop given by Professor Alan Bain on Mastery Teaching and
Cooperative Learning, three talks were also given. The topics presented were: Students
with Special Learning Difficulties by Mrs Lau Yu Po Kwan, Psychologist; Chinese
Medicine and Health Care for Teachers by Mr Yam Lap Sun, a parent and a practicing
Chinese medical doctor; and Assessment by Mrs Christina Lee of the Hong Kong
Examinations and Assessment Authority.
To enhance teachers’ physical and mental wellness, a number of measures were
taken, including improvement of staffroom environment, creation of a platform on e-class
to share information on activities of personal wellness, early communication to teachers
on big changes in job duties, and feedback by the school management on non-teaching
duties in formal appraisal. Furthermore, staffroom representatives were encouraged to
play a more active role in bridging communication and understanding between staff and
the school authority.

The 2009/2010 academic year was a time for sowing the seeds of caring for the natural
environment. We set up a mini-farm on the rooftop of our teaching block and assigned
each class a piece of land on which to plant vegetables and fruit. We look forward to a
bountiful harvest next year.
The past year was also a year for reaping what had already been sown. Our students
continued to excel in languages and music, and won many awards in the solo events of
the 61st Hong Kong Schools Speech Festival and the 62nd Hong Kong Schools Music
Festival. The school choir was the Most Outstanding Urban Primary School Choir of the
Year and the Best Urban Primary School Choir Singing in Foreign Language. We would
especially like to recognise Primary Four student Max Andrew Salata for winning the
first prize in the Bank of East Asia International English Contest 2009.
Our students achieved in sports and visual arts. Both our boys’ and girls’ fencing teams
took home the B Grade Overall Champions in the All Hong Kong Inter-Primary Fencing
Competition 2009-2010 (Hong Kong Island). Wong Yin, a Primary Two student who
demonstrated promising artistic talent, was awarded the First Prize in the drawing
division of the China Adolescents Science Technology Invention Contest.
We were proud to see a fruitful year for students who challenged themselves in science
and mathematics. We came second in the Hong Kong Budding Scientists Award 20092010(Group) and Hanson Datwani, an outstanding student from Primary Six, was the
champion in the Science Knowledge Quiz (Individual). We also received the Second
Prize in the China National Primary Mathematics Olympiad 2010.
To cultivate a habit of self-learning and develop the learning skills of our students, the
school will keep working hard on constructing an e-learning platform for all learning
areas in the coming years.

Appreciation
Our school has been undergoing numerous developments in recent years as part of a
concerted effort to provide quality education to our students. Many people have
contributed generously to our educational aims. I would like to thank our council
members, the Education Bureau, our parents, alumni and friends for their advice and
support, and in particular, Professor Tam Sheung Wai, our Council Chairman, the Chief
Justice, the Honorable Andrew Li, our Council Vice-chairman, and Dr Michael Mak, our
Supervisor, for their unfailing trust and support. Dr Mak, having served the Council as
the College Supervisor for 11 years, will retire from the post effective 1 September 2010.
In the past 11 years, Dr Mak has given of his time generously and committed himself to
working for the best interests of the College, while supervising, guiding, advising and
supporting my work. I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt
appreciation, and on behalf of the College, our gratitude for his tremendous contribution
to St. Paul’s.
Our school’s greatest asset is our teachers. I am proud to say that we have a team of
very committed and competent teachers. Our rapid development and numerous
educational initiatives in recent years are testimony to our teachers’ professionalism and
effort. We take pride in our school and shall continue to develop confident individuals
with high moral values and a strong desire for knowledge, individuals who will strive for
continuous development and excellence, be compassionate and aware of the need for
interdependence as a global citizen, and who are willing to serve the community and
contribute to the well-being of our society.
