2010 Annual Report of the - Boys and Girls Club Bloomington
2010 Annual Report
of the
Letter from the Executive Director
What Parents Think:
“With the Boys and Girls Club, I
have always felt that my daughter
has been in caring hands that both
support her and help her grow in
positive ways.”
“[The Boys and Girls Club has]
helped my kids experience things
that I would not have been able to
provide (i.e. music lessons).”
“I think my kids have matured and
learned to handle themselves in
diverse situations.”
What Kids Think:
“My life has been changed by the
Club because I am more respectful
now to others”
-Age 10, boy
“I have gotten a lot smarter and
learned what’s not okay and what’s
okay.”
-Age 8, boy
“The Club means everything to
me…The staff and volunteers are
the nicest people in the world. If
they weren’t here to help, this Club
would not be as great as it is now.”
-Age 12, girl
Every day in 2010, hundreds of success stories were written at the Boys and
Girls Clubs of Bloomington. Some were stories of academic success: raising
grades and staying in school. Other stories were about safe havens for kids,
a place to go after school when they may not have anywhere else to go. Still
more were about making friends, discovering new talents, and just plain having fun. All of these stories have one thing in common: the support of people
like YOU.
Your support helps us to fulfill our mission every day: to enable all children -especially those who need us most -- to reach their full potential as caring,
responsible and productive citizens. Our community needs the Boys and
Girls Clubs of Bloomington to provide our youth with the skills to be the
strong, caring, productive and responsible adults we need them to be. We
build foundations at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Bloomington. These are the
foundations for strong and confident children. Strong and confident children
become strong and confident adults.
Thank you for helping us to fulfill our mission. Thank you for
investing in the youth of this community. With you, we will
continue to build strong foundations for our community.
— Jeff Baldwin, Executive Director

We opened the Carlile Archive Library this
November to celebrate and catalog 54 years of BGC
Bloomington history. This project was sponsored by
the Petro Family Foundation and named after Jim
Carlile, BGCB’s first Executive Director.
We received the Social Entrepreneur Award at the
FUSE awards this year.
The Club’s Youth Leadership Monroe County
program graduated its first class in 2010 and is
poised to welcome its second class in February,
2011. This program, geared towards 7th graders and
modeled after the LBMC adult program, offers
leadership training to ALL students from each of our
county’s private and public middle schools.
We surpassed the $30,000 2010 It Just Takes One
Campaign goal. Over $55,000 has been raised this
year!
This year, Bill Polian, President of the Indianapolis Colts, joined us for our Leaders Building Leaders
Luncheon to support our YoMon program.
Our Mitch’s Kids Tutoring Program continues to
raise reading and math test scores, with increases of
89% and 73% at the Crestmont Unit, 53% and 70%
at the Ellettsville Unit, and 64% and 35% at the Lincoln Street Unit respectively.

In 2010, Crestmont Unit’s attendance (number
of visits per year) was 3,464. That’s double
compared to 2009 (1,696).
In 2010 we introduced Lincoln Street Soccer,
Arrow Club Archery, cheerleading club and a 3
on 3 basketball tournament experience. In all of
these sports and activities, members learn about
the group process - they learn how to be a part of
something bigger than themselves.
We broke ground on
a new building at
Camp Rock to
support arts and
education!
We hosted many of
our families at our
annual
Thanksgiving
Dinner at Terry’s
Banquets and
Catering. This event
provides a holiday
meal for families that
may not otherwise
have that chance.
Who We Serve
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Bloomington offer a variety of youth programs for children ages 6 to 18
years old. Many of our kids come from families that live at or below the poverty line. According to
the American Academy of Pediatrics, youth living in poverty are 100% more likely to experience
grade retention, 98% more likely to be expelled from school, and 84% more likely to drop out of
school completely. In addition, most members are from one-parent families and often suffer from a
lack of appropriate role models. We offer specialized, creative and academic programs, low
annual dues, and scholarship opportunities to welcome ALL children. With our programs, we
strive “to enable all children, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as
responsible, productive, and caring citizens.”
Total Number of Members in 2010: 1,300+
Average Number Served Per Day in 2010: 400+
Our premiere day camp, Camp Rock,
located on the shores of beautiful Lake
Lemon serves kids ages 6-12. We also
provide a CIT program for teens 15-17.
Camp Rock has called the shores of
Lake Lemon home for over 40 years!
In 2010, we served 156 campers, a
22% increase from 2009. We had 9
CITs compared to 3 in 2009. We gave
away $4,625 in scholarship dollars to
20 campers in need so that they could
experience all Camp Rock has to offer.

“Not having the financial resources to send my daughter
to whatever child care centers I might want has opened
my eyes to the crisis of child rearing and child care in
this country as well as to the wisdom of the proverb „It
takes a village to raise a child.‟ With the Boys and Girls
Club, I have always felt that my daughter has been in
caring hands that both support her and help her to grow
in positive ways. This Club and Camp Rock are part of
the „village‟ that is helping us raise our daughter to be
the responsible member of the community that we want
her to be. We are so very thankful to
anyone who has supported this most important of
causes.”

“The Club has made available new opportunities for my
daughter. As a parent, I have always felt anxious
leaving her in certain situations because many of them
don‟t fully acknowledge her disabilities. The Club goes
way beyond just keeping an eye on her; they help her
find constructive and fulfilling things to do. The Junior
Staff program is one of the several ways for her to
participate on a whole new level. She is able to help
others, which is very new to her. She has blossomed
with a sense of self worth and confidence… It is helping
her to realize that she is capable of so much more than
she realized. ” - Club Parent
