My vet tells me my dogs
have to be tested for
heartworm every two
years, even though they
take heartworm medication regularly. Why? It’s
expensive - one test
times three - and I don’t
see why it’s necessary.

DEAR DOG MOM: It’s a
valid question, but there
really is a good answer
for why the veterinarian
insists on testing your
dogs for heartworm.
The reason is that
monthly heartworm
medications, while billed
as “preventative,” work
by killing off the microfilariae (heartworm larvae) that enter a dog’s
bloodstream through an
infected mosquito’s bite.
The medication doesn’t
stop mosquitoes from
biting your dog; therefore, there’s still a risk of
heartworm infection
even though it is taking
preventive medication.
The other reason is that
the doctor can’t be 100
percent sure that your
dogs are taking their
heartworm medication every month. She
doesn’t administer the
medicine, so - while you
probably are giving your
dogs their monthly dosage right on schedule she can’t take your word
for it. That’s because,
as you know, there are
some pet owners who
don’t give pets their
heartworm preventive
on schedule. To reduce
the number of heartworm infections, and
keep your dogs healthy,
the vet has to check
them regularly. She does
it every two years because it can take several
months for an infection
to be detected. Some
vets test for infection
every year, particularly
in regions with a high infection risk. What if the
vet detects a heartworm
infection? She’ll treat
your dog with a much
stronger medication to
kill the heartworms.
The healthier your dog
is when treatment
starts, the better it will
be able to tolerate the

THE SOUTHERN FLYING
SQUIRREL (PART 2 OF 2)
The English language is full of misnomers that can be
downright confusing. For instance, we park on a driveway, while we drive on a parkway. It makes one wonder
what someone was thinking when they were naming
things in our lexicon. However, when it comes to nature,
it’s easy to understand how the southern flying squirrel received its technically improper name. While they
don’t actually fly like a bird or bat, they are highly efficient gliders that can effortlessly soar from tree to tree
throughout the forest. The southern “gliding” squirrel
possesses a loose flap of skin/membrane, called the patagium, that stretches from its wrists to its ankles. When
stationary on the side of a tree or on the ground, these
loose skin folds make the flying squirrel appear almost
like a large, roly-poly chipmunk without stripes.
The purpose of these wonderful adaptations becomes
apparent as soon as the flying squirrel launches into the
air. With its front paws and hind legs completely outstretched, the flying squirrel’s patagium make it similar to a small 7”x10” hang glider that steers in-flight by
banking its body and using its tail as a rudder. Amazingly, it can make almost 90o turns mid-glide to avoid
trees or predators. Equally impressive is its ability to
flair its head up and tail down, using its patagium as a
parachute to come to a sudden stop on the side of a tree.
Studies have shown the flying squirrel can glide 3 feet
horizontally for every 1 foot in vertical drop travelled.
For example, if a flying squirrel launched itself from 50
feet up in a tree and wanted to land on another tree ten
feet off the ground (a 40 foot vertical interval), it could
remarkably glide up to 120 feet or 40 yards through the
woods in the process. They usually scramble up the tree
upon landing to make subsequent flights and can move
throughout the forest quite rapidly. No wonder their
early human observers named them southern flying
squirrels, based on their aerial prowess.
Unfortunately, many PA residents have never had an
opportunity to watch a flying squirrel. Their proportionally, very large eyes enable their aerial antics to go on
primarily at night. Southern flying squirrels typically
den in hollow trees or woodpecker cavities, and will
communally den in the winter to conserve energy. In
warmer months, they may occupy leaf nests, similar to
fox or gray squirrels. Flying squirrels are preyed upon
by owls up in the trees or while in flight, and subject to
attack from raccoons, black snakes, and house cats in
their dens or nests. Most PA predators will take advantage of any highly vulnerable grounded “gliders” they
encounter. Across PA, southern flying squirrel populations typically run 1 to 3 individuals per forested acre
in suitable habitat. This surprises many people since
they are so rarely seen. The home ranges of individual
flying squirrels will overlap and they will often congregate at abundant food sources, such as regularly filled
bird-feeders. A very opportunistic feeder, the flying
squirrel’s diet includes nuts, seeds, berries, buds, and
fungus. Interestingly, they will prey on insects, larvae,
bird eggs, nestlings, and mice; and are not above consuming carrion.
Flying squirrels are active year round and females
normally have two litters of 2 to 7 young per year, one
in the spring and the second in late summer. Typically,
adults weigh-in at a mere 11⁄2 to 3 ounces and are 8 to 10
inches long, which includes their 3 to 5 inch tail. Their
pearl white underbellies contrast significantly with their
gray brown coats. If you’ve never observed a southern
flying squirrel, take a minute to watch an on-line video
on them. I’m pretty sure you’ll want to get out and see

A bush that is on fire is something that won’t escape notice. When it is not being consumed by the
fire, that attracts curiosity. When a voice speaks from
the fire with instructions to remove foot coverings
because the ground is Holy, that is going to command complete attention.
He didn’t want the job. He didn’t feel that he was
qualified to be a spokesman. The voice from the fire
wanted him to go to the king. He was to speak to the
king and to demand that the people be freed from
their slavery so that they could go and worship their
God, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. This was
the voice from the fire. The God who had heard the
cries of His people.
The king was worshipped by his people too. Kings
like to be worshipped and this king was no different. He wasn’t impressed with this commoner who
claimed to be speaking for God. “That is what the
great Lord says: Let my people go, so that they may
worship me.” The king’s answer should not surprise
us. He said “No.”
After a direct warning from Moses, God’s spokesman, the river and other water sources turned into
blood. The whole place began to smell awful. But
the king was not impressed. He had magic men who
could do that.
So God sent frogs. A lot of frogs. Frogs were hopping everywhere. They were in bedrooms, kitchens
and even in the palace. The king pledged to release
the slaves if the frogs died. The next day was the
time that the king choose, and they died. One would
think that it had to be the Real God. Not the king. He
changed his mind. Then God sent lice. Next He sent
flies. But the king kept refusing to free the slaves.
Miraculously the land where the slaves lived wasn’t
affected.
There was then an epidemic that spread to all
of the livestock in the kingdom. First stinky water.
Then the stench of decaying cattle and sheep added
to the aroma of dead frogs. Oh, and the slaves’ animals were not affected. Neither was the king. It was
still “No.”
The next plague, the sixth, was a skin disease. It
was unfortunate for the king’s magic men. Though
they could mimic some of the miracles, they couldn’t
escape the disease. Next came hail during a lightning
storm. The king had finally had enough. After the
storm stopped he went back on his promise again.
Each time Moses warned the king what the next
plague would be if he did not let the slaves go free.
When a swarm of locusts ate the crops that the hail
storm had not destroyed, the king agreed to release
some of the slaves. Since this was non-negotiable,
the kingdom went dark for three days. No light at all.
The king held his ground. Each time the land where
the slaves lived was not affected like the rest of the
kingdom.
The tenth plague was the breaking point for the
king. The Angel of Death came upon the land overnight and killed every firstborn. The slaves were
instructed to put the blood of a sacrificed lamb on
their doorposts and the Angel would pass over their
home. The household would be spared. They were
instructed to eat unleavened bread, bitter herbs and
the roasted sacrifice.
The king finally released the slaves to worship
their God. People of the Jewish faith are in the midst
of their Passover celebration. Shalom.

Knowing the power of the resurrected Christ in a
personal way is far better than simply repeating a
creed that states the fact that the Lord Jesus Christ
arose. The Christian’s life should give daily evidence
of the reality of Christ’s resurrection.
The noted conductor Reichel was taking his choir
and orchestra through their final rehearsal of Handel’s beautiful and inspiring “Messiah”. When the
soprano soloist came in with the refrain, “I know
that my Redeemer liveth,” she sang it with flawless
technique, perfect breathing, and clear enunciation.
After she completed her part, everyone looked at the
conductor expecting to see his response of approval.
With a motion from his baton for silence, he walked
over to the soloist and said, almost sorrowfully, “My
daughter, you do not really know that your Redeemer
lives, do you?” Embarrassed, she answered, “Why,
yes, I think I do.” “Then sing it!” cried Reichel. “Tell
it to me so that I’ll know you have experienced the
joy and power of it.” Then he motioned to the orchestra to begin, and she sang the truth with a fervor
that testified of her personal knowledge of the risen
Lord. Those who listened wept and the old master,
eyes wet with tears, said to her, “You do know, for
this time you have told me.”
On this glorious Easter day, let’s yield ourselves
anew to the indwelling Holy Spirit, and be sure that
we are living in obedience to the Word of God. Unbelievers will then see that Jesus is alive and that we
truly know Him.

21/2 cups all-purpose flour, divided
1
/4 cup white sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 (.25 ounce) package active dry yeast
2
/3 cup milk
2 tablespoons butter
2 eggs
5 whole eggs, in shells, not cooked, dyed
2 tablespoons butter, melted
In large bowl, combine 1 cup flour, sugar, salt and
yeast; stir well. Combine milk and butter in small
saucepan; heat until milk is warm and butter is softened but not melted.
Gradually add milk and butter to flour mixture; stirring constantly. Add two eggs and 1/2 cup flour; beat
well. Add remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, stirring
well after each addition. When dough has pulled together, turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and
knead until smooth and elastic, about 8 minutes.
Lightly oil a large bowl, place dough in bowl and turn
to coat with oil. Cover with damp cloth and let rise in
a warm place until doubled in volume, about 1 hour.
Deflate dough and turn it out onto a lightly floured
surface. Divide dough into two equal size rounds;
cover and let rest for 10 minutes. Roll each round
into long roll about 36” long and 11/2” thick. Using
two long pieces of dough, form loosely braided ring,
leaving spaces for 5 uncooked dyed eggs. Seal ends
of the ring together and use your fingers to slide 5
uncooked dyed eggs between braids of dough.
Preheat oven to 350OF. Place loaf on buttered baking sheet and cover loosely with damp towel. Place
loaf in warm place and let rise until doubled in bulk,
about 45 minutes. Brush risen loaf with melted butter. Bake in preheated oven for 50-55 minutes, or until golden. Yield: one 1 lb. loaf

• Foam Sheet
• Wooden Block
• Adhesive
• Scissors/Cutting Tool
• Pen or Pencil
The first step to making your own stamp is
to draw your desired pattern onto a foam
sheet. It could be a picture or words. You
could even use a stencil if needed. Then
cut out your design. For simple shapes
you can probably use scissors, but for
smaller or more intricate designs you
may want to get an Xacto Knife. Once
you have it cut out you need to use your
adhesive to stick the foam to your block.
Remember, if you are doing words you
need to glue them on backwards. That is
a perk to using foam sheets. All you have
to do is draw it the right way and then flip
it over once you have it cut out. Once it
dries you can use your stamp!
