NORTHERN LAKES REGION SASKATCHEWAN REGIONAL PROF I L E 1 – NORTHERN LAKES ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CORPORTATION REGIONAL PROFILE INTRODUCTION The Northern Lakes Economic Development Corporation was developed in 2010 to assist and identify needs to support business growth among their region. The communities that are included within this Region are: The Village of Glaslyn, the Village of Medstead, Shell Lake, Town of Spiritwood, Resort Village of Chitek Lake, Village of Leoville and Rabbit Lake, Pelican Lake First Nations, Witchekan Lake First Nations, Big River First Nation, Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation, the RM of Spiritwood, RM of Parkdale, RM of Medstead, RM of Roundhill and Meeting Lake. This Region is famous for its outdoor activities, proximity to the forestry belt, small-town hospitality and First Nation partnerships. It was with these assets that the Town of Spiritwood realized that there are many opportunities available in this Region, but has been kept secret from the rest of the country. For instance, you hear about the auto industry in Ontario, or the oil industry in Alberta, but many people do not know about the oil opportunities that are becoming available in Glaslyn, the regional parks/tourism opportunities that surround Rabbit Lake/Shell Lake or the animal genetics industry that is based in Spiritwood. With the recent success that Saskatchewan is having it was time to bring this Region to the forefront, so they brought together a group of surrounding communities to explore a regional strategy to attract new partners that could cluster with the existing businesses or new industries that could take advantage of the opportunities that are available. REGIONAL PROFILE NORTHERN LAKES ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CORPORTATION – 2 ABOUT THE REGION The population of this Region is dispersed among a number of communities to better suit the individual families interests and needs. Additionally, wherever you live in this region you will be in close proximity to one of Saskatchewan’s major centres, either Prince Albert, North Battleford or Saskatoon depending on where you plan on settling. Also, there are significantly different economic drivers in each community that encourages the region to work together. The population for this Region is over 9,000 and the three largest urban centres include: Location Population Private Dweling Big River First Nation 1437 322 Spiritwood 911 405 Pelican Lake First Nation 818 164 Stats Canada and Indian and Northern Affairs Canada Additionally, this Region is home to the Agency Tribal Chiefs, which consists of the Pelican Lake First Nation #191, the Witchekan Lake First Nation #117/117D and The Big River First Nation #118. These three groups alone make up a population of 2,662, over one-third the population of that Region. According to the registered Population of these bands the number increases to 5,205. Approximate boundaries of the Northern Lakes REGIONAL PARKS This Region is well-known for its access to the many lakes, hunting and fishing amenities, which include about 50 resort lakes in about a 30min drive and about 10 regional parks in about an hour drive. The following communities were included in this analysis*: As per the chart the population for this region is over 9000 and is quite stable with a 98% retention rate. The communities that have seen growth within this Region is the Big River First Nations, the Village of Rabbit Lake and the RM of Parkdale. These numbers also do not take into consideration that it is centrally located in the middle of three major urban centres including North Battleford, Prince Albert and Saskatoon, which adds an additional market of 284,936. Largely because of the regional parks and lakes that are found within this region this area grows considerably during the summer months. *Only Data found through Stats Canada was used in this analysis. The age that is nearing retirement in this region is less than what you would typically find in other regions. Further analysis of the 15-24 demographic indicates that the communities that have the highest concentration of this group is the Big River First Nations and Ahtahkakoop First Nations.
