Our Blessings
Dear Friends of St. Patrick’s,
With all my heart, I thank each of you for becoming
an important part of my life and for letting me become
a part of your journey. That love and friendship will
never change. Once again, I go on a new journey this
time to New York and my new job will have different
challenges, but I know God will direct me with His
loving hand. My new mission will begin January 31,
2015. I know this day will be a day of tears for me and a
feeling of great loss. The Sister coming will have similar emotions
as she journeys to her new Home. She will be blessed to have you all
as part of her family and I know she will feel your support as she makes
the transition.
Christmas is just around the corner. If you wish to show your appreciation to our staff this holiday season, we ask that you make a donation
to St. Patrick’s for the Staff Christmas Party, which includes an extra
bonus from you. (Please indicate on the memo line of your check:
Staff Christmas Party.) By doing this, your contribution will benefit
the staff in all departments and on all shifts, as each of them participate
in the care of your loved one.
The Sisters thank each of you for the blessing you are to us. We keep
you in our prayers daily, but especially as we celebrate Christmas Day.

Yes, Nuns Really Do Fly
A
s the Administrator of St. Patrick’s Residence for the past eleven years,
Sr. Jeanne Haley has been the face of St. Pat’s. From being the Grand Marshall
of the West Suburban Irish St. Patrick’s Day Parade, dancing on the White Sox
dugout at U.S. Cellular Field, to being the Flying Nun in the “Naperville Loves a Parade”
mural (see front cover), she is a legend to follow and an inspiration to many.
She has devoted her adult life as a Carmelite Sister for the Aged and Infirm to caring
for our elders with love, respect and dignity. For many of us, she was by our side as we
held the hand of a loved one in their last days. She has dried many tears and taught us
that our loved one needs to know that it is okay to leave this world and continue on their
journey. She has given meaning to the old adage that “people come into our lives for
a reason”.
We wish Sr. Jeanne well as she moves to Germantown, New York in January. She was
elected to the General Council of the Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm. Sr. Jeanne
promises frequent visits to Naperville and thanks everyone for reaffirming for her the
importance of the Mission of Mother Angeline and the vow that she took as a Carmelite
Sister 43 years ago.

2014 SILVER & Gold Key Gala
Silver & Gold Key Gala Marks Record $105,000
T
his year, the Gala was named to reflect the year of celebrating the 50th Golden Anniversary of St. Patrick’s
Residence and the 25th Silver Anniversary of St. Patrick’s relocating from Joliet to Naperville. The Gala, held
on Thursday, September 25th, was an overwhelming success reaching $105,000 in net proceeds! Proceeds
from this year’s event will be used to help the Sisters complete the modernization of the resident rooms on the first floor.
These enhancements include: reclining chairs, window treatments and furnishings to include nightstands and dressers.
Auctioneer, Dick Kuhn kept the bidders with their hands up and provided an ample supply of Kleenex for Sr. Jeanne
as she announced her election to the General Council of the Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm (see page 3).
Sr. Jeanne has served as the Administrator of St. Patrick’s Residence for 11 years. Emotions were evident and a testament
to the commitment and devotion Sr. Jeanne has put forth to make St. Patrick’s Residence a loving home for the residents
and their families.

S
t. Patrick’s Residence is blessed with families,
friends and staff who are dedicated to us and
who are devoted to our residents. On October
17th, we honored four members of our staff who
exemplify the Mission of Mother Angeline Teresa
and the Carmelite Sisters of St. Patrick’s. They
have gone beyond their duties to love and serve
our residents in a way that comes from the heart.
For the tenth year, the Mission Made Visible award
has been made possible through the generosity of
one of our benefactors. We wish to thank him for
his continued support and for sharing in our belief
of the importance of affirming our employees and
helping to continue Mother Angeline’s legacy.
Each recipient and their guest were invited to a
special dinner with the Sisters and department heads
where they received a plaque and a monetary gift.
The Carmelite Sisters would like to thank the award
recipients for displaying love, concern and respect to
all of our residents and for believing in the Mission of
Mother Angeline Teresa and St. Patrick’s Residence.
You are a blessing to us.
The award recipients are chosen from nominations
submitted by our employees and are evaluated by
the Mission Committee, focusing on one of the ten
Carmelite Core Values. This year’s Core Value is
Hospitality. Hospitality is defined as someone who
is welcoming, approachable, genuine, accepting
and who creates a warm, comfortable atmosphere.

Behavioral Management Program

Creating Comfort with Love
F
or the past several years, the St. Patrick’s
staff have been learning and applying new
techniques to enable positive behaviors in our
residents. Nursing, Social Services, Life Enrichment,
and Administration meet weekly to review resident
behaviors and determine interventions that may
provide comfort to them.
When staff notices a challenging behavior in a
resident, they observe the behavior to recommend
interventions based on what they assess is
the cause.
Using the STEAM method we try to determine if the
behavior is attributed to:
Sensory—has too much, too little or conflicting sensory
stimulation
Tangible—needs liquids, food, photo album or busy box
Escape—wants to get away, avoid a peer or a task that is
too complicated
Attention—is lonely, insecure or scared and wants reassurance
Medical—is in pain, has an infection, is sick or has a drug reaction
The first group of volunteers is made up of Ministers
of Comfort. Based on the findings of the Behavioral
Management Team’s observation, these individuals
provide one-on-one companionship and comfort to
our residents by doing the following:
• Sit and talk with the resident
• Escort a resident to spend some time in the Emerald
Garden or Guild of St. Patrick’s Butterfly Garden, to
Our Lady of Mount Carmel Chapel or to Happy Hour
• Listen to music, or share a picture book or magazine
• Give a hand massage
• Sit beside the resident to provide a quiet presence
• Help the resident to participate in a Life
Enrichment activity
These ministers attend a training session that has
been developed directly from our staff training
focusing on Person-Centered Care, Dementia Care
and Palliative Care.
Utilizing this technique allows us to isolate the cause of the
behavior and work together as a cross functional team to
implement solutions to fulfill resident needs.
After the Behavior Management Team identifies a
potential solution to the resident’s unmet need, they
are able to determine what type of intervention(s)
would assist in making the resident more comfortable.
An outgrowth of the Behavioral Management
Program has been the implementation of two
“Ministries of Comfort” volunteer opportunities.
As we begin our second year of this special ministry, we invite
new members to join us. To inquire, please contact any one of the

The second group of ministers working with the
Behavior Management Team, are the “Threshold
Singers” from Wheaton, IL. These singers provide
ease and comfort usually at the bedside. They
bring a calm and focused presence with their
gentle voices, simple songs and sincere kindness.
As Threshold Singers, they share a repertoire of
beautiful, meaningful and soothing songs, and a
desire to provide comfort and peace at a significant
and challenging stage of life. Families have shared
that their gentle singing helps them to “be” with their
loved one.
These individual ministers and ministers of song
bring positive, spiritual energy to our residents.
We thank them for sharing their time and special
talent with the residents.

to Host Annual Holiday Cookie Walk
O
n Saturday, December 6th, the Guild of St. Patrick’s
Residence will host its annual Holiday Cookie Walk
from 10:00 a.m. to Noon. Cookies will be sold by the
pound or you may purchase them pre-packaged or stroll
among the tables of a vast assortment and choose your
favorites. Back by popular demand will be the ever-favorite
English toffee.
We are looking for cookie bakers to share your favorite
holiday cookies with us. We would appreciate 5-6 dozen
holiday-themed cookies delivered to the St. Patrick’s
Volunteer Office in disposable containers/trays on
Friday, December 5th between the hours of 8:00 a.m.
and 8:00 p.m. It’s a wonderful family or group project.
