AUSTRALIA 1943 I PROOF PAIR
In 1964, coin collectors were informed that Australian 1943 proof pennies and
halfpennies with the "I" mintmark for India were being sold by the Bombay Mint.
Sales were restricted to one set per person.
Details of the restrikes were reported in the press towards the end of March,
1966. Officials in Canberra took appropriate action and, at the request of the
Australian Government, the Master of the Bombay Mint, Mr V J Joshi advised
that production of the restrikes had ceased. He reported that only a small number
of sets had been struck.
These Bombay proofs are toned and were struck in very small numbers - with
around 20 known, compared to the standard circulation issues of 1943 that were
struck in their millions.

AUSTRALIA AT WAR 50 CENTS
As part of the Australia at War Commemorative
Coin Program issued by the Royal Australian Mint,
three new cupro-nickel 50¢ pieces have been
issued with a mintage of 50,000 of each design
dated 2015.
The seventh coin in the series pays tribute to
Australian WWII soldiers who fought against the
German invasion of Greece. The reverse features
a depiction of Commonwealth soldiers battling
along side their Greek counterparts.
In 1941, as Australian and allied troops began
withdrawing from Greece, many were relocated
to the island of Crete to sustain the Royal Navy's
garrison. The reverse of the eighth coin features a
vivid depiction of soldiers battling, while aircraft
and airborne troops attack from above.
The Australian and allied forces faced an uphill
battle against German and Italian forces, the latter
sought to seize control of the Suez Canal and oil
fields in the middle east. In 1942, the Allies’ fortunes
began to change due to two significant actions in
the Egyptian town of El Alamein. This coin depicts
soldiers in action among barbed wire obstacles.

2015 SIR HENRY PARKES 20¢
In the 200 years since Sir Henry Parkes’ birth, much has been
said about the man whose tireless efforts gave us the
nation of Australia as we know it today. Described as ‘a
colonial colossus’ and ‘the most commanding figure in
Australian politics,’ he has been best known to generations of Australians as the Father of Federation.
Henry Parkes had already served more
than fifty years in public life when he
embarked on the most ambitious political
cause of his career. In 1889, Parkes
dedicated himself to uniting the seperate
colonies of Australia under one federal
government. By 1890 Parkes' political skill
had succeeded in winning a federation
Conference in Melbourne (attended by all
Australian and New Zealand colonies).
The conference agreed a Federal Convention
should meet in Sydney the following year to
draw up a constitution for a federated Australia. In less than one year, Parkes
had set the wheels in motion. Throughout the meetings of the convention, Parkes
was the figurehead and maker of inspirational speeches.
To commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Sir Henry Parkes, the
Royal Australian Mint has struck a cupro-nickel uncirculated 20 cent featuring a
portrait of Parkes on the reverse.

UNLIKELY HEROES
The third and fourth al/bronze
uncirculated one dollar coins to be
represented in a new six coin Unlikely
Heroes - Great and Small series are
Shake the Kangaroo and Horrie the Dog.
During WWII, many kangaroos travelled
to the battlefields with soldiers, becoming
mascots for a number of regiments. One
special kangaroo became the star of
a photograph in which he was shaking
hands with an Australian soldier near the
Egyptian pyramids. This was a powerful
image of battlers connecting with home,
and the kangaroo earned the nickname Shake.
In Egypt 1941, private Jim Moody, VX13091,
of the 2/1st Machine Gun Battalion discovered
a puppy in the Ikingi Mariut area of the Western
Desert. The dog was named Horrie, and used a distinctive bark to warn
the battalion that the enemy was approaching. He was given the service
number EX1 and travelled to Greece, Crete, Palestine, and Syria before being
smuggled into Australia.
