We have a graduate development programme in place which
is used to bring new graduates into the business. This gives
us the ability to mould and model our future managers in
line with the company’s beliefs and values. This is a 2 to 3
year development programme giving individuals the insight
of the company by working in all areas of the organisation
so gaining an overall understanding of the business. This
programme is used alongside succession planning to ensure
that we have suitable successors for management positions
to meet our current and future growth plans. We have found
this a refreshing exercise whish has benefited the company
greatly.
Performance Appraisals:
Performance appraisals are completed on a yearly basis for all
staff employed within the company. This is a formal process
which we adopted in June 2008. The appraisal not only covers
out direct employees but the process allows us to incorporate
any Subcontracting organisations we are employing at
the time. The appraisal itself covers the individual’s and
company’s performance (For the case of subcontracting
organisations) and takes approximately one hour to
complete. Preparation works in advance of the appraisal is
completed by the both parties. This is a standard type of proforma which acts as the discussion document for the main
appraisal. The performance is discussed initially focusing on
the positives and then moving to the areas where further
development is needed. The appraisal then moves to the
aspirations of the individual’s i.e. where they see themselves
in Three & Five years. From the aspiration discussions a
Personal Development Plan (PDP) is produced. The PDP is
then monitored by the company’s training department for
progress against completion.

Case study one
Olympic Park (Blackwater)
Connectel were appointed a Tier 2 Contractor for Volker
Highways to deliver in a short space of time and within
a restricted works area, the Blackwater Foul Water
connection. The project works involved installing two
sewer runs of 300mmID vitrified clay. Augerboring was
the preferred method of installation of the pipes, as the
existing sewer manhole had a sacrificial concrete ring
of approximately 1m depth. The rout of the system was
such that it crossed the major highway for the Olympic
site and therefore the works could not impede the park
development.
The project consisted of Augerboring the 300mmID clay
pipe and the excavation and installation of the manholes
for the drainage run including the tie in to the main sewer
shaft. Excavations took place to allow a 7.5 M shaft to be
sunk in an area approximately 6 m Which needed significant
coordination and engineering knowhow to enable the shaft
to be sunk with such limited space to work in. Due to the
nature and location of the works, the works was completed in
a restrictive programme.
A full confined space escape team was provided by Connectel
and confined space trained scaffolders where in place to work
within the live Thames Water sewer.
A problem arose and our client asked Connectel to help
stop an existing manhole from leaking, Connectel adopted
an innovative solution. The method was to inject a dual
combined product into the area behind the concrete ring of
the faulty manhole entry. The solution provided an effective
repair and saved the need for a further 4m deep excavation.
Connectel completed the project on time, working nights
to complete the project within the clients timeframe. and
works were well received by the client who awarded an the
management team with a Olympic Park recognition award.
Connectels trained staff liaised with Thames Water to
complete the works to the Thames Water specification as
Thames would ultimately adopt the completed sewer system.
The Ground water required treatment prior to discharge to
foul sewer, Connectel employed the services of their own
In House treatment specialists Pegasis (UK) Ltd who is part
of the Connectel Group of companies. Pegasis deployed
equipment to treat the groundwaters prior to disposal to the
Foul sewer.

Redbridge Crossover
Connectel were contracted by AMEY to complete a
crossover at Redbridge roundabout.
The project works involved traffic management and the
installation of TWO crossover points to enable replacement
works on the existing bridge deck expansion joints at
Redbridge Flyover.
Initially the works took on a environmental prospective
ensuring Connectel were not going to disturb any of our
native species. Topsoils were identified for reuse and were
stored locally.
After the establishment of traffic management agreed in
conjunction with Transport For London (TFL) Connectel
commenced the enabling works.
fig 3
All excavation arisings were removed from site and sent to
a local recycling facility for processing and reuse. Connectel
measure the quantities of materials sent to Landfill and
recycling or exempt sites (fig 1).
The landscaping was completed and the subbase set in palce
in readyness for the final Asphalt waring course. And where
necessary connectel replaced road markings (fig 2).
In certain areas of the project Manholes were raised and
lowered to accomodate the ner surface levels (fig 3).
Temporary barriers were set in place in readyness for the
final pahse (fig 4).

Woodford VRS
Connectel were contracted by Amey to complete the
installation of VRS barrier in a previously installed
crossover point barrier works at Woodford, after
previously completed bridge repair works. The barrier
system were semi – permanent, removable to enable
crossovers to be utilised in the future. The project works
involved the new installation of 240m continued length
of crash protection barriers.
Connectel established Traffic Management for the project,
the rout of the new barrier system was planned and the new
fixing points marked and drilled and excavated.

Once the new fixings have set, Connectel Engineers
Inspected the integrity of the fixings as part of the in house
quality control arrangements.
New barriers set in place and fixed according the clients
specifications
The integrity of the transition coupling was tested and
inspected (fig 1).
