The CCC Boys of
Dover & New Philadelphia
Saturday, April 16 at 11:00 AM
Join Michigan based author Bill Jamerson as
he presents a music and storytelling program
about the Civilian Conservation Corps.
Dressed in uniform, Jamerson tells stories,
shows clips from his PBS film, reads excerpts
from his novel, and sings original songs with
his guitar. This nostalgic program is filled with
heartfelt stories and lots of laughter. The CCC
was a federal works program created by FDR
in the heart of The Great Depression. The
CCC in Ohio planted millions of trees, built
hundreds of bridges and dams, fought forest
fires, and built a dozen state parks. For more
information or to register
for this free community
event, please call the
Dover Public Library at
330-343-6123.

On March 15, the Dover Public Library will ask

Our Mission:
The Dover Public
Library is committed to
being the center of
community life in Dover,
Ohio. It is our mission
to support life-long
learning by providing
information and
opportunities for
personal enrichment
and enjoyment to
people of all ages and
from all backgrounds in
Dover and throughout
the Tuscarawas Valley.
This year, the library is
pleased to unveil a brand
new author series called Nights at the
Round Table. As it was in King Arthur’s
court, our round table is a symbol that
everyone who sits around it is equal. This
new series gives people the opportunity to
meet and share ideas with visiting authors.
Not everyone has the opportunity to
become a published author, so we hope
Nights at the Round Table becomes a
forum for conversation where readers can
connect with writers in a way that
is fun, inspiring, and possibly lifechanging.
We hope to see you around the
Round Table in 2016!

Dover Public Library Levy Q&A
What is the library levy and when will it be on the ballot?
The Library is proposing the renewal of a 1-mill operating levy for 5
years to be on the March 15th ballot.
Will my taxes increase?
There will be no tax increase for the renewal levy. The renewal will
cost $2.91 per month for the owner of a home valued at $100,000.
How are the funds used by the Library?
Levy funds will be used for operating expenses of the Library such as
materials (books, DVDs, eBooks, CDs), programming for all ages,
and services to the community such as Books on Wheels and
computer classes. The Library depends on the levy for 27% of its
funding.
What will happen if the levy does not pass?
Without the levy, the Library will have to make severe cuts beginning
next year, including changing operating hours and staffing, reducing
the amount of new materials, and reducing the number of programs.
What are the important dates for this election?
The deadline to register for the Primary election is Tuesday, February
16. The Primary election is Tuesday, March 15.
Please feel free to contact director Jim Gill with any questions.

Q&A with Two Friends of the Library
Who are the Friends of the Dover Public Library?
The Friends of the Library is a group of people who believe an
excellent library is essential to the community.
What is the Book Cellar?
The Book Cellar is a bookshop open to the public featuring new and
gently used books available at reasonable prices.
Name: Joyce Cecil
Family: Married to Joe for 51 years, 9 Children,
14 grandchildren with identical twins due in April
making 16.
Work status: Retired Music educator at St.
Joseph School and organist for 43 years.
How long have you been involved in The Friends
of the Library? My husband and I joined when the
Dover group was founded. I’ve been a member of the Friends board
for 10-12 years.
What do you like most about working in The Book Cellar?
Working in the Book Cellar fulfills a lifelong fantasy of being a
librarian. It never ceases to amaze me the subjects that have been
written about. I’m very much a people person and love meeting the
customers and helping them find the right book. I also really enjoy
working with Vickie and the other volunteers.
What do you like to do in your free time?
Besides babies and books, I enjoy gardening
and playing piano at two nursing homes. It’s
an extension of my teaching, only with
seniors.
Name: Vickie Wittkop
Family: A son, Chris; a daughter and son-in-law,
Bethany and Allen Olmstead; 4 grandchildren, Olivia
who lives in Hilliard; Elsie, Jacob, and Sam who live in
Hillsborough, North Carolina.
Work Status: Retired English teacher from New
Philadelphia H.S.
How long have you been involved in Friends of
the Library? 5 years on the Friends Board
What do you like most about working in The Book Cellar? Meeting
people who share a love of reading and exchanging "must reads"! My
range of authors has expanded exponentially! Another benefit is
working closely and sharing ideas with Joyce Cecil, our special group of
volunteers and the library staff!
What do you like to do in your free
time? Reading...no big surprise;
refinishing/refurbishing/ repurposing
furniture; spending time with family and
friends.
People would be surprised to know...
I was the first recipient of the Dr.
William J. and Mae Hurst Jackson
Award for Distinguished Teaching in
2003.
Friends of the Library Book Cellar
Open Saturdays 9:00 AM - Noon
People would be surprised to know... My
college major was French, and I never took a
music course in college.

Mortimer (my moose friend) asked me, “What’s
retirement, Miss Pat? Why’s this such a big
deal?”
I told him I think it will be like selecting the perfect book to read. First

select another book,
and another adventure begins. I’m anticipating many adventures with
family and friends in my retirement.
I’ve loved being the Children’s Librarian at our wonderful library. I’ve
enjoyed meeting and getting to know all our young patrons and their
families. I’ve enjoyed sharing books, story times and programs with
them. I’ll miss working with my wonderful staff and all my great coTitle
workers in other
departments. I’ll miss working with Mr. Jim, our
Director, who Date
has helped me maintain and improve the Children’s

Department, in so many ways. And finally I’ll miss my friend Mortimer
the Moose. He and all the children have helped to make me always

at heart.
But the great thing about retirement is I will be able to enjoy all the
programs and books at the library as a patron. I’m really looking
forward to that!
