KIRKPATRICK
The early Kirkpatrick genealogy is extracted from internet sources and has a few inconsistencies that
are not completely clear. The Kirkpatrick family of this research seems to follow from several
generations of Alexander Kirkpatrick grandfathers that originated from the region of Watties Neach,
Dumfries Shire, Scotland, and eventually settled in Wilson County, Tennessee. The first Alexander of this
research was born and died in Scotland and had 9 children: Alexander, Andrew, James, Jacob, Sarah,
Hugh, Isabelle, John, and Thomas. Alexander and Andrew, along with 5 children between them, made
the journey to America and were the forefathers of this particular line of Kirkpatrick’s. They left
Scotland and settled for a few years in Belfast, Ireland before arriving at New Castle Delaware in 1736.
They traveled to Baskinridge, Somerset County, New Jersey where it was to remain home for most of
the Kirkpatricks. Eventually, Scottish born Andrew (1720-1777), sold his part of the Kirkpatrick estate to
his brother David and headed to Washington County, Pennsylvania. Andrew is officially recorded as a
veteran of the American Revolution.1 Andrew and his wife, Margaret Gaston (1728-1795), remained in
Washington County, Pennsylvania until their deaths.2 Andrew and Margret’s son, Alexander (17411825), married Jane Stewart (1743-1815) and are the originating grandparents of most of the
Kirkpatrick’s within this research. This may be Alexander Kirkpatrick that is reported to of been the first
Sheriff of Augusta County, Virginia. Alexander and his wife, Jane, had a large family, where at least two
of their children remained in Orange County, North Carolina as they made their way to the region of
Sumner County, Tennessee (later to become Wilson County, Tennessee). Alexander’s son, David (17621816), another reported veteran of the Revolutionary war, is the next ancestor in the line of this
research. David’s marriage to Rebecca Stewart is not documented – there are a few of his progeny that
is suspect because of birth date issues and the age of Rebecca Stewart. It is quite possible that David
had a marriage prior to Rebecca Stewart – this could account for the name “Rachel” being used as a
middle name for Rebecca where I do not see any official record supporting the name Rachel. One of
David’s reported sons is John D. Kirkpatrick (1815-1876) who was to never know his father, David. John
(Dilliard) was born in Wilson County, Tennessee and married Locky Joiner on March 12, 1838 in Sumner
County, Tennessee. John and Locky had at least 7 children until Locky’s untimely death sometime
between 1850 and 1860. John later partnered with Lucinda Jane Hogan (marriage record not located),
Edward Latimer’s widow, where they settled and in Dunklin County, Missouri by 1865—where they died
in the 1870’s. John and Lucinda’s son, Robert Taylor Kirkpatrick, was born December 12, 1857 in Dyer
County, Tennessee before making the family move to Missouri. Robert married Addie May Reeves in
Dunklin County, Missouri and made their way to a couple different locations in Texas. Robert T. and
Addie were the parents of three children; Daisy (1880-1948), Temple (1886-1979), and Edgar (18891982).

Ohio River at Buffington’s Island, O. July 19, 1863, into what is now West Virginia, eventually
making his way to Southern Territory. Wounded in arm at Cynthiana, Ky., May 12, 1864. Arm
paralyzed. Resigned. Resignation refused. Ordered to report with his command to Gen. Hood to
take part in the Invasion of Tennessee in 1864. Paroled at Marion, Ala. May 16, 1865.

Biography Records
Lucilius M. Kirkpatrick (1829-1908)
LUCILIUS M. KIRKPATRICK, Muhlenburgh [sic] County, was born July 18, 1829, in
Wilson County, Tenn. He is the eldest of nine children - four boys and five girls - born to
Anderson and Emma E. (Moss) Kirkpatrick, natives of Wilson and Sumner Counties,
Tenn., respectively, of Scotch-Irish and German descent. Anderson Kirkpatrick was a
son of John Kirkpatrick, who married a Miss Clendening; they were natives of North
Carolina and Virginia respectively. John Kirkpatrick was the son of Alexander
Kirkpatrick, who was born in Ireland. The family came to Tennessee about 1780.
The mother of our subject was a daughter of John Moss, who married Miss Lawrence
Slainks; they were natives of Virginia. Lucilius M. was reared on a farm, and received a
common school education; he taught several terms of school in Tennessee; he lived with
his parents until the age of twenty, when he engaged as salesman for one year in
Lebanon, Tenn. He was engaged in business for himself at Cole's Ferry, on the
Cumberland River, for eight years. In 1859, he moved to Logan County, Ky., and
engaged in farming for two years. When the war broke out he returned to Tennessee, and
engaged in farming and trading until 1877, when he moved back to Logan County. In
1879, he located near Penrod, where he has been engaged in the mercantile business,
railroad contracting and farming. He was married in September, 1853, to Vandelia S.
Coles, of Tennessee, a daughter of Samuel and Sallie (Walker) Coles; natives of Wilson
County, Tn., and of Irish descent. Her grandfather, William T. Coles, was born in
Dublin, Ireland. To Mr. and Mrs. Kirkpatrick were born thirteen children: Laura L.
(deceased wife of _____ Kennedy), Sallie E. (Crewsdon), John W., Mary E. (deceased),
Lizzie M. (Mohon), Lucilius Z., Colista A., Anderson D., Samuel T., Robert H., Harry
L., Sue D., Frizzella. Mr. and Mrs. Kirkpatrick are members of the Presbyterian church.
He is a member of the F. & A.M.3

John D. Kirkpatrick (1836-1895)
JOHN D. KIRKPATRICK, D. D., professor of historic and practical theology in
Cumberland University and editor and proprietor of the Lebanon Register, was born July
8, 1836, son of Anderson and Eliza (Moss) Kirkpatrick, who were the parents of nine
children. The father was of Scotch-Irish lineage, born in Wilson County in 1808, a
farmer and stock raiser by occupation. He was married about 1828, and has since resided
on the old homestead, which consists of several hundred acres. The mother was born in
1814 in Christian County, Ky., and died in 1875. Our subject received his rudimentary
education in the county schools, and afterward attended the Hartsville High School for
three years and the high school at Mount Juliet two years. At the age of nineteen he
entered Cumberland University, remaining two years. In 1857 he entered the Theological
Seminary of the same institution. He began teaching in 1854, and in 1858 became a
minister of the Presbyterian Church, being ordained in 1860. In April, 1861, he enlisted
in Maney's company, First Tennessee Regiment. In 1862 he returned to Sumner County
and raised Companies C and D, and was elected captain of Company C, Seventh
Tennessee Cavalry. He participated in many of the principal battles of the war, and rose
to the rank of colonel. He was seriously wounded at Cynthiana, Ky., and was compelled
to give up active duty, and was given charge of the enrolling department at Richmond,
Va. He was also chaplain of his regiment. After his return he resumed teaching, and
November 1, 1866, he married Susan Kirkpatrick, who has borne him four children:
Curry B., Donnell B., John D. and Harry B. In 1865 he was given the pastorate of the
Goodlettsville Cumberland Presbyterian Church, where he remained four years, and then
took charge of the Second Cumberland Church of Nashville. In 1875 he was called to
Lebanon to become the financial agent of Cumberland University, and at the same time
accepted the chair of historic and practical theology, which he has since filled with credit
to himself and honor to the institution. In 1880 he was made managing editor and
proprietor of the Cumberland Presbyterian Review. This he disposed of, however, and in
1885 took charge of the Register. In December of the same year the building caught fire,
and was consumed with all its contents. He immediately re-established himself and is at
present editing a newsy and valuable paper. In 1884 the degree of D. D. was conferred
upon him entirely unsolicited. He is a man of unsullied reputation, a gentleman and a
scholar. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and K. of H. and K. of P. 4

Death of Mrs. Sumner Kirkpatrick.
Mrs. Sumner Kirkpatrick died at her home in Kemp Monday night after an illness caused
by measles, lasting several weeks. She was a sister of Mrs. J. F. Reasonover of this city, who
was with her when she died. She is survived by a husband and four boys. At the time of her
death she was 32 years of age.

Mrs. J. F. Reasonover has returned from Kemp, where she attended the funeral of her
sister, Mrs. Kirkpatrick. She was accompanied home by her sister, Mrs. Hearn, of Coleman
City.
John Yarbrough was here today from Kemp on his way home to Elmo. He had gone to
Kemp to attend the funeral of his sister, Mrs. Kirkpatrick, notice of whose death was in The
Transcript of Tuesday.

Mrs. J. F. Reasonover is home from Kemp where she attended Monday afternoon at
4’oclock, the funeral of her nephew, Walter Kirkpatrick, who died there Sunday afternoon
at 6:35 after an attack of appendicitis. An operation was deemed too late by attending
physicians when he was stricken. Mr. Kirkpatrick, who was a leading business man of Kemp,
was twenty-seven years old. He is survived by a wife and two children and his death is
mourned by the entire community.

Addie Reeves Kirkpatrick (1859 – 1918)
Mrs. Addie M. Kirkpatrick, a Great Divide resident who was operated on in Craig
Tuesday of last week, suffered a relapse on Friday and passed away early Monday morning.
The lady came here a year ago from Oklahoma with a son, E. E. Kirkpatrick, who lives with
his little family on a homestead seven miles northeast of Great Divide. She was a widow, 59
years old, and leaves another son in Oklahoma and a daughter in Texas. Funeral services
were held at the Christian Church yesterday forenoon, conducted by Rev. V. M. Hovis, with
interment in Craig cemetery. The bereaved son states that in no place on earth could
people be more thoughtful and kind than those of this community have been during their
time of sorrow.

In the name of God Amen. I Alexander Kirkpatrick of the county of Wilson and State of
Tennessee, being in tolerable heath and perfect memory god be thanked but calling to
mind the mortality of our bodies that is appointed for all men once to die. I do this twenty
first day of February in the year of our lord on thousand eight hundred and twenty four
make and publish this my last will and testament in the following manner (to wit)
Item) I give and bequeath unto my son James Kirkpatrick a certain tract or parcel of
land containing ninety three acres to him and his heirs forever, being the land where Robert
Taylor first improved.
Item) I give and bequeath to my six grandchildren Jane Motherall, Alexander
Kirkpatrick, Samuel Kirkpatrick, Hanah Clendenon, and Anderson Kirkpatrick heirs of John
Kirkpatrick deceased one hundred acres of land, whereon Alexander Kirkpatrick son of John
now lives, the above land to be appraised by three free holders as wood land, and the

Alexander Kirkpatrick deceased, and to the heirs of David Kirkpatrick deceased, In land that
