Join the charismatic Lightnin’ Charlie
as he rocks-and-rolls and hosts some great
blues musicians, including headliner
“Barrelhouse Chuck,” “Harmonica Todd,”
and The Billy Crawford Band.
“Barrelhouse Chuck” is the pianist in the
new major motion picture The Cadillac Records
Story starring Beyonce. Chuck and the Cadillac
Records band were invited to perform at
President Obama’s inauguration. Chuck is the
only Chicago blues pianist to have studied
under Sunnyland Slim, Pinetop Perkins, Blind
John Davis, Detroit Junior and Little Brother
Montgomery. Barrelhouse Chuck draws on this
distinguished lineage to create a blues, boogiewoogie and barrelhouse piano style that places
him at the forefront of this celebrated tradition.
“Harmonica Todd” has played and
recorded with “Barrelhouse Chuck” and
Lightnin’ Charlie for decades.
The Billy Crawford Band plays contemporary rhythm & blues and has released five
CDs on the Triple Shot label. Crawford has
played the blues for 20 years on five
continents. He played with recording artist
Deborah Coleman from 1997-2002 and is
featured on three of her Blind Pig releases.
He has solo releases on Triple Shot recordings.
Saturday, May 2
This is Ladies Night. Performers will
include EG Kight, Ann Rabson, and Saffire:
The Uppity Blues Women. This performance
is made possible through a grant from the
Tennessee Arts Commission.
Saffire members are celebrating their
25th anniversary, as well as their final tour
and their final release as a group. Their bawdy
brand of blues is full of double entendre and
pithy observations on sex, love, booze, and
women misbehaving. They can also be
melancholic enough to break your heart. Their
“Middle Aged Blues Boogie” has become the
group’s anthem.
Ann Rabson is a member of the Boogie
Woogie Hall of Fame. She will play a solo set,
bringing historic blues, boogie-woogie, and
barrelhouse music styles front and center.
EG Kight, the “Georgia Songbird,” has
been dazzling audiences for years with her
Southern Belle mix of blues, soul, and country.
Her refreshing twist on the blues is earthy as
well as explosive. She is a powerhouse
performer with the smokiest of lyrics. Kight
has been nominated for five W.C. Handy
awards: twice for Contemporary Female Artist,
once for Debut Artist, and for two Songs of
the Year (“Nothin’ Ever Hurt Me” and
“Southern Comfort”).
‘Caterpillar Crawl’ Inspired
by Classic Children’s Book
The Junior League of Bristol will hold its
first annual Caterpillar Crawl on Saturday,
May 16, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. The familyfriendly event will be a downtown scavenger
hunt inspired by Eric Carle’s book, The Very
Hungry Caterpillar.
Scavengers will use a list of clues and a
map as they search for 10 bronze caterpillar
sculptures by Bristol artist Val Lyle. The
statues will be permanent fixtures in
downtown Bristol, and families will be able to
enjoy the activity year-round.
The event will begin at the State Street
Farmer ’s Market and culminate with a
Caterpillar Carnival at the Bristol Public
Library. The carnival will feature games,
balloons, snacks, a butterfly exhibit and a
reading of The Very Hungry Caterpillar in
honor of its 40th anniversary. There will also
be a clay table, where Lyle will help children
sculpt their own statues to take home.
“When we first came up with the concept
for the Caterpillar Crawl, we had two goals
for the project,” says Katy Sikorski, president
of the Junior League of Bristol. “One objective
was to support reading and literacy, while the
other was to promote our downtown area. The
Caterpillar Crawl will also allow the city of
Bristol to have an ongoing program for families
to enjoy.”
This
sculpture
by Val
Lyle is
one of 10
that will
be part
of the
Caterpillar
Crawl in
Bristol.
About the Book: “In the light of the
moon a little egg lay on a leaf.” So begins The
Very Hungry Caterpillar. This book follows the
ravenous caterpillar’s path as he eats his way
through one apple (and the pages of the book
itself) on Monday, two pears on Tuesday, three
plums on Wednesday, and so on, through
cherry pie and sausage — until he is really fat
and has a stomach ache.
