FROM THE RABBI — GOOD NEWS FROM THE EMANUEL
“JEWS’ SURVEY:” GREEN SHOOTS OF SPRING
“
I
t is customary
to blame secular science and
anti-religious
philosophy for
the eclipse of religion in modern
society. It would
be more honest to blame religion for
its own defeats. Religion declined not
because it was refuted, but because it
became irrelevant, dull, oppressive,
insipid. When faith is completely
replaced by creed, worship by discipline, love by habit; when the crisis of
today is ignored because of the splendor of the past; when faith becomes
an heirloom rather than a living fountain; when religion speaks only in the
name of authority rather than with
the voice of compassion-its message
becomes meaningless.”
— Abraham Joshua Heschel,
God in Search of Man: A
Philosophy of Judaism
Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel’s
voice resonates in my being. Sometimes I imagine Rabbi Heschel sitting
on my shoulder as I prepare a sermon,
plan a lesson, or ponder a position I
might take on a contemporary event
or societal challenge. I imagine the
good Rabbi sitting on my shoulder,
keeping me honest and demanding
that I raise my sights, stay motivated
and truly committed, and look to the
depth of matters rather than concentrate on the superficial. Keeping
Heschel’s bracing challenge to organized religion in mind, I take heart
from the results of a survey I recently
conducted among parents of Emanuel
Third Graders preparing for Matan
Siddur, the presentation of their first
Jewish prayer book.
When parents were asked to assign a degree of importance to values,
actions and identity for themselves
and their children for 21 different
categories, parents overwhelmingly
responded that they were “Important,
of great importance, or of ultimate
importance.” The categories included:
Be involved in your family; Be engaged in your synagogue; Support the
Jewish Community; Pursue Jewish
Learning; Perform acts of kindness;
Develop a Spiritual Life; Be able to
participate in prayer; Practice good
personal ethics/respect others; Light
Shabbat Candles; Help make the
world a better place; Help those who
are in need; Feel connected to Israel;
Feel connected to the Jewish People
around the world; Feel connected to
the story of the Jewish People; Feel
connected to G-d; Appreciate Nature;
Work hard; Have fun; Be creative.
Each of the above categories were
rated 8, 9 or 10.
The Three categories that earned
the most ratings of “ultimate importance:” Practice good personal ethics/
respect others; Help those who are in
need; and help make the world a better place.
In other words, “Vasita hatov
v’hayashar” “Do the good upright
thing” (Dvarim);Tzedakah and Tikkun Olam. I am encouraged that our
parents embrace the strong values
taught at The Emanuel in their personal lives and aspire to teach them
to their children. This shows that
the synagogue is valued not only as a
warm and loving communal setting (it
is!) and a link to past generations (it

is!) but also, importantly, as a place of
moral and existential seriousness that
is reflected in our actions. There is
alignment between the highest values
and aspirations of our Third Grade
parents for themselves and their children and the values and actions being
taught at The Emanuel. This gives
us reason to be hopeful for the future
and inspired to work on behalf of our
synagogue.
At the Shabbat morning service,
the children led the congregation
in “Shema Yisrael.” Later, each child
came to the center of the Bimah and
the parent(s) handed the siddur to
each child. As I watched one young
boy clutch his siddur close and leap
in the air with joy, I felt a lump in
my throat and knew that we are on
the right track. The green shoots of
spring bring with them inspiration,
hope, and new life.

Elysa Graber-Lipperman, Vice President of The Emanuel Synagogue, has been
selected for a prestigious Wexner Heritage
Foundation Fellowship.
The program identifies and trains
rising young leaders in the Jewish community. It involves an intensive two-year
course of study culminating in a group trip
to Israel. Graduates of previous cohorts
have gone on the leadership roles across
the Jewish community. Rabbi David Small,
who nominated Elysa along with three
other young leaders from The Emanuel
said, “Elysa is a great choice — she has the
drive, the qualities of mind and heart to succeed on the program and to follow through in service to the community for many years to come.” Ira Henowitz, President of The Emanuel, added “The selection committee could
not have selected a more wonderful and dedicated young leader. We are so
proud, Elysa!”

NOTES FROM THE CANTOR — RICHIE BARSHAY RETURNS TO THE EMANUEL
by Hazzan Sanford Cohn
F
or 26 years,
one of the
highlights of our
musical program
here at The
Emanuel has
been the Sharon
Barshay Music
Service. Endowed by Sharon’s family as a living musical memorial to
their beloved daughter, niece, wife
and mother, this annual Friday night
service has highlighted a variety of
choral works, usually centered on a
particular theme or composer, and has
sometimes featured guest participants.
As times and tastes have changed,
our attendance at these late Friday
evening services has diminished. So,
the Luftglas-Barshay family and I
have decided to hold a Sharon Barshay Memorial Concert this year.
On Thursday evening, May 29,
2014, please join us for an exciting
concert by the Richie Barshay Trio,
featuring, of course, our own Richie
Barshay on percussion, along with
Petr Cancura on saxophone and mandolin, and Garth Stevenson on bass.
Kol Shirenu, formerly known as The
Emanuel Adult Choir, will also perform, under my direction.
Percussionist Richie Barshay, noted for his work with the Herbie Hancock Quartet, has established himself
as a prominent musical voice of his
generation and is regarded as “a player to watch” by JazzTimes magazine.
On tour and recordings his diverse
résumé includes Herbie Hancock,
Chick Corea, Esperanza Spalding,
The Klezmatics, Fred Hersch, Kenny
Werner, Lee Konitz, Natalie Merchant, David Krakauer, Fred Wesley,
Claudia Acuña, Bobby McFerrin and
Pete Seeger among others. Since
2004, he has led outreach projects
as an American Musical Envoy with
the U.S. State Department in Asia,
Africa, South America, and Europe.
Now based in New York City, Richie
began playing Jazz and Afro-Caribbean music during his youth and has
expanded his focus to Indian rhythmic concepts and tabla, inspiring his
2007 recording debut Homework on
Ayva Records. “Homework introduces
a major rhythm voice on the rise” says
Downbeat magazine, and The Guardian (UK) praises “the arrival of a major innovator who also knows how to
have fun.” (from richiebarshay.com)
Be sure to reserve your free ticket
for this great concert, courtesy of the
Sharon Barshay Music Fund, for an
evening of great music.

“Discovery: Our Children, Our Selves”
Rabbi Howard Singer’s Friday Night Lecture
Series — 10/77 through 5/25/79 and 10/10/80
through 5/22/81
n early 1970s, I moved back to West Hartford
with my husband, Jerry, and our one-year-old
son, Michael. We went looking for synagogues
near our house. At the first synagogue, Michael and
I were gently but firmly escorted out of the sanctuary since babies and toddlers were not allowed. The
next Shabbat, with some hesitation, we went to The
Emanuel. We sat in the last row. At one point during his sermon, Rabbi Singer looked in our direction and said it was wonderful to see little ones at
services. Jerry and I knew right then we had found
our shul. Years later, our son Peter, then a toddler,
would run up to the Bimah to do a happy dance,
exhibiting his joy for being there.
About twelve years after our first visit to The
Emanuel, Michael was ready for his Bar Mitzvah
but Hurricane Gloria had struck the day before
and The Emanuel, along with most area homes,
had no power. Initially, we thought the service
could be held in the chapel, but there was not
enough natural light. Rabbi Zelermeyer decided
that the only place to hold services was outside
in the Goodwin Banks Garden. Congregants and
guests brought candles and candelabras in case
lighting was an issue. Without being asked, they
set up chairs outside, and someone (thank you,
Steve Welk) even brought a generator so that
the caterer could prepare the food. While it was
threatening rain during the service when Michael
began his Aliyah the sun came out. It was truly an
Emanuel community Bar Mitzvah. What Jerry
and I sensed at our first Shabbat service has held
true through the years. The Emanuel is a welcoming, warm, and supportive community. All of that
was quite apparent at Michael’s Bar Mitzvah.
I
W
e were new to the community and like many
families we began to look at synagogues in the area.
We heard about The Emanuel and their rabbi who was
innovative and so we went to hear the rabbi speak.
Our first Friday night service with Rabbi Howard
Singer was superb. We also enjoyed Cantor Koret’s
rendition of the Shabbat prayers. Services were at 8 p.m.
After the tea and pastry, we re-entered the sanctuary at 9
p.m. and Rabbi Singer started to speak from the middle
isle with all the confidence in the world.
Singer started a lecture series that would continue
throughout his tenure. The first series we attended was
called “Discovery: Our Children, Our Selves.” Before
starting to speak, Singer asked us if we picked up a copy of
his typed notes. These notes helped a lot. We could read
along and listen to the Rabbi’s comments. At the end of
the evening, most people wanted to come back for more.
There were lively discussions around the evening’s topics.
Rabbi Howard Singer devised an interesting plot.
It started with a fictional family, the Rothensteins who
were Inn keepers during the reign of Alexander III
(1881). Chaim Eliezer and his wife Sarah Leah lived in
a town (25,000 people) in the fictionalized border town
of Kobrinitz between pre-partitioned Poland and Russia.
Over a three-year period, Singer traced the descendants of
this family through a Jewish portal from 1880 throughout
most of the 20th century.
This series brought us to The Emanuel, but other
learning experience, events and friendships have kept us at
The Emanuel for 37 years.

NEW EXHIBIT IN THE ROSE, DAVID, AND RALPH MITNICK CASES:
PASSOVER WITH SUSAN WOLPOE — EDUCATOR BECOMES COLLECTOR
by Gloria Bein, Exhibit Chairperson
T
he new exhibit in the Rose, David, and Ralph Mitnick
cases opposite the sanctuary features Passover Judaica
on loan from Susan Wolpoe, educator at The Emanuel
Religious School.
A native of West Hartford, Wolpoe’s parents, Gert and
Harry Wolpoe, were two of the early founders of the Bess
& Paul Sigel Hebrew Academy. Consequently, her love for
Judaism was inherited.
The exhibit has outstanding Israeli and domestic matza
covers, some hand painted silk, Eliyahu goblets, and glass
and ceramic Seder plates that are unique and valuable. You
will notice a beautiful velvet matza cover, hand painted on
a silk insert, accompanied by a matching afikomen bag.
Also on view is a circular silk cover with looped edging and
embroidered figures simulating the Hebrews exiting from
Egypt and the wording in Hebrew lettering. The circular
shape is for the round shmura matzas.
Another outstanding item is a hand-painted Kiddush
cup and saucer set of antique rose-glass. Also, the seder
plates are ceramic and porcelain china. One is very colorful
and has unusually shaped accompanying cups. The
central theme is a large “Bluebird of Happiness.” Another
outstanding one bares the quote from Ecclesiastes “For
everything there is a season,” designed by Mordecai N.
Rosenstein.
Also on view is a very handsome matza plate in
porcelain china designed by Sharon Schoen Muchnick.
Another Seder plate depicts the Exodus above which
are the Hebrew words, “Next year in Jerusalem.”
Accompanying the exhibit are two Haggadot with Jaffe and
Herzlia on them, one with a beautiful velvet cover.
Wolpoe began collecting Judaica about thirty years
ago and has an extensive collection of serigraphs and
lithographs. Her collection also includes Kiddush cups and
other miscellaneous Judaica by Jewish artists from both
Israel and the United States.
Wolpoe is a graduate of the Hebrew Academy and Hall
High School, after which she attended Bar Ilan University.
During this time, she participated in the Four Day March
of 100 miles. She traveled the entire country of Israel,
meeting with David Ben Gurion at S’dei Boker in the
Negev. They had great discussions and the Prime Minister
tried to convince her to make Aliyah. He was personally
responsible for getting her tickets to the Independence Day
festivities when the country was celebrating its Bar Mitzvah
in 1961. She found the Israelis incredibly hospitable.
Wolpoe hitchhiked most of the time and one of her
experiences included a part in a movie with David Niven, a
popular British movie star in the Sixties. A picture of them
together is included in the exhibit.
After returning to the U.S., she attended the University
of Connecticut, Trinity College, and the University
of Hartford. She did her student teaching at Solomon
Schechter Day School.
She taught at Congregation Beth Israel for about 20
years and prepared most of the students for their B’Nai
Mitzvat. She then joined the faculty of The Emanuel
Synagogue, where she has taught for 20 years.
Throughout history, objects reflect the different ways
Jews have expressed their sense of what it means to be
Jewish. When asked why she massed this great collection
of Judaica, Wolpoe responded “That’s easy — I have a
passionate love for Judaism!”
The Wolpoe collection will remain in the cases until
the High Holidays, when it will be replaced by the water
colors and oils by Henrietta Stargardter. Interestingly, she
paints with oil sticks.
Assisting Gloria Bein in the setup of this exhibit were
Joy Platt, Pam Garry, Cynthia Blayer, Toby Sidrane, Ona
Mastronarde, Elaine Smith, and Pam Simon.

A NEW PARTNERSHIP
Dear Emanuel Friends,
We are delighted to share that The Emanuel Synagogue is about
to embark on an exciting new journey — a community partnership
with JTConnect! Beginning this September, JTConnect (Jewish Teen
Learning Connection) will offer a Sunday morning high school program,
JTAwakenings…right in our very own Emanuel Synagogue!
This JTConnect learning opportunity is available to teens in grades
8-12, both from The Emanuel and from the community at large. It
will replace our current high school program, Beit Sefer Tichon,
bringing with it enhanced resources and experience in a variety of teen
programming. Our own Emanuel teens will benefit immensely from
having the JTConnect program right in our kehilla, and we are excited to
welcome other Jewish teens from the community into our doors to learn
and grow as Jews.
We look forward to a strong and vibrant partnership that results in
providing outstanding Jewish teen educational opportunities here in
Metro Hartford. In the coming weeks, parents of our incoming 8th-12th
graders will receive detailed information about JTAwakenings at The
Emanuel. Please join us in celebrating such positive news for our teens,
The Emanuel, JTConnect, and the entire Jewish community.

by Risa Davidson, Co-Chair
T
odah Rabbah to congregants for making our spring
food drive such a success! Thanks to your tremendous support, we donated two carloads of food to the Anja
Rosenberg Kosher Food Pantry in April. All of our food
drives benefit local pantries.
If you’d like to do more to help the food insecure in our
community, please consider a cash donation to Foodshare,
which distributes 16 tons of food each day to almost 300
community programs. Monetary donations to Foodshare
go a very long way. Because of Foodshare’s efficiency and
ability to partner with the food industry, a $30 donation
can provide a month’s worth of food for someone in need.
Also, we would like to extend a big thank you to the
following volunteers who helped us sort fresh produce for
Foodshare at the Regional Market over the course of the
last year: Caryl Blum, Risa Davidson, Bella Fink, Fred Fox,
Monica Gold, Geri Kaizer, Susan Kurtis, Jamie November,
Don Miller, Regina Miller, Lisa Sadinsky, Hope Tripp,
and Janet Wallans. A special thank you to Hope Tripp for
coordinating this monthly volunteer project, which helps
distribute fresh produce to individuals in our community
who otherwise might not have access to such healthy food
options.
Please join other Emanuel Synagogue members in
leading Friday evening Shabbat services and sharing
Shabbat joy with residents at the Hebrew Home. Services
are held on the third Friday of the month. Upcoming
services are scheduled for May 16th and June 20th. We
start gathering and escorting residents from their rooms
to the chapel by 3:00 p.m. For more information, please
contact Pam Garry at 523-5254 or [email protected].
Your participation, children and adults, regardless of your
knowledge of Hebrew or the service, will help to make it a
warm-hearted and spirited service for everyone.
Contact one of our co-chairs, Risa Davidson,
[email protected] (860-236-8889) or Janet
Wallans, [email protected] (860-278-4596) if you are
interested in learning more about B’Yadeynu activities.

Brotherhood Breakfast Recap
Gary Schwartz, JD LLM in Taxation spoke at The
Emanuel Synagogue on March 2, 2014. His program,
called “Financial Organization and Estate Guidance
— Creating Peace of Mind for You and Your Family,”
was very well received. Gary’s presentation was engaging
and identified important steps that families can follow
to organize all of their important financial records and
documents. He was able to show all of us through specific
examples the impact, both financially and emotionally, of
poor record keeping. He highlighted the stress and strain
that families go through trying to piece together records
that may be missing or out of date. Gary also provided
excellent opportunities for families to save both time
and money by organizing and updating their documents.
He clearly identified the items that would need to be
assembled in order to avoid confusion and wasted time
which would provide our Emanuel families with the
opportunity to reduce legal and accounting fees as well
as the potential to reduce tax liability.
Neal Rubinfeld, in honor of my grandchildren.
