Calypso ColorFest Weekend Set for September 19-22, 2013

While we love the colors of fall, I’m not sure that everyone is
ready to let go of summer yet – it seemed to fly by so quickly this
year! So we’ll keep a little of the summer fun around with a
Calypso beach theme for the 2013 ColorFest activities. The
weekend is scheduled to be filled with events, food, wines and
microbrews, hot air balloons and lots of color.

The festivities begin on Thursday, Sept. 19 with wine dinners

at various restaurants around town. Fantastic foods will be paired with some complementary

Change of Seasons Ahead—Already?
Almost as quickly as summer arrives, is on its way out again. This summer seems to have passed in the blink of an eye.
Here we are, planning our 2013 ColorFest Celebration, Annual Diplomat Appreciation Banquet and quickly approaching
the end of the summer season in the Visitor Center.
First, I will be on vacation and out of town from Friday, August 9th through Monday, August 19th—returning to work on
Tuesday, August 20th. The Visitor Center schedule is fully staffed during my vacation, so please be sure, in the event of
your absence, to notify any member of the Chamber staff with the name of your substitute and when they are scheduled to
work for you.
Here comes September—which brings with it our annual ColorFest Celebration. We are, as always, seeking the help of
volunteers to make the magic happen. Friday, September 20th is the Passport to Pagosa Wine & Food Festival.
The following day, under the same tent, will be our 5th Annual Bands, Brews, Etc. There are numerous volunteer
opportunities such as event set up and break down, wine and beer service, ticket sales, clean up and so much more. We
offer free or discounted ticket passes for volunteers, depending on the event and participation level of volunteer duty.
We are currently planning to celebrate another successful year in the Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center, and looking at
the week of October 7th to hold our Diplomat Appreciation Dinner. Information on that event will be forthcoming. The
summer schedule continues through Sunday, October 20th, 2013.
Thank you for another successful summer season. We hope you can attend the Diplomat Appreciation Dinner and celebrate
with us.

2013 Renaissance and Pirate Festival
I would like to extend a sincere thank you to our Renaissance and Pirate Festival
sponsors. Without them this festival would not be possible. The Springs Resort and Spa, USA
Communications, Step Outdoors, Wild Horse Casino, Pagosa Baking Company, RU Feeling
Crafty, Incredible Pagosa Vacation Rentals, Dr. King Campbell, the San Juan Motel and
Cabins, Mountain Landing Guest Quarters and RV Park and last, but not least, Maggie the Irish
Wolfhound.
We welcomed visitors from as far away as Grand Junction, Denver, Santa Fe, and
Aztec along with our neighbors in Durango. This event continues to thrive and grow each year
and has become one of the most “festive” Chamber events.
Now it’s time for me to take a deep breath…and prepare for our next Chamber event.

Car Show @ Pine Ridge Extended Care Center
“On Sunday, June 16 ( Jerry and Judy Jones along with Ellen and I and our Daughter Jeanne and our two Granddaughters Bryanna and Hailey went to Pine Ridge Extended Care in Pagosa Springs with our Hot Rods, our 33 Ford 3-window and
the 36 Cabriolet, the Jones’ 36 Chevy, also there was Lin Coates and his wife with their 57 Chevy, Bill Egg and his beautiful
Trans Am, Dan Cooper brought his very nice 55 Chevy 4-wheel drive Pickup.
I was very impressed with the participation of the residents and staff of Pine crest. Many of the people dressed up for
the occasion, and the smiles were everywhere.
This was probably the best Father’s Day I have ever had watching my family enjoy all of the gratitude being shown by
a group of people that were sincere in their appreciation that we would come to see them on Father’s Day.
I know many of you were busy with family but I would like to suggest we make this an annual event, I sure will.”

Business to Business Expo
Wednesday, October 16, 2013
The annual Business to Business Expo is a time for businesses to gain more exposure for their business, garner new
ideas to implement into their business practices, learn about regulations that may affect your business, be a voice in your
community and build relationships. This year’s Expo will really get you thinking about business and your community.
There will be three primary speakers. There is so much technology out there; how does a business keep up with it:
emails, Facebook, Twitter, Linked In, mobile apps, iPads, Pinterest. It’s a technological jungle! Jack Jostes from Ramblin
Jackson marketing agency will be working with businesses and speaking about ways that you can wrap your head and
hands around the internet changes in bite-size ways. As a certified Constant Contact representative, he will also be giving
you tips on how you can more easily speak with your customer base or gain new customers. Jack has an easy to
understand, entertaining way of communicating with his audience.
2014 is right around the corner and around that corner is looming the new health care reform laws. Linda Gann,
Western Slope Outreach Coordinator for Connect for Health Colorado will be presenting health care options for
individuals and small businesses. Colorado has been working for years on solutions to the spiraling costs of health insurance and the impact that health care costs have on our state’s budget. Beginning in October our marketplace will
provide us with competitive, private, market-driven access to health insurance. As the executor of the Colorado
Exchange Program, Connect for Health Colorado has been making presentations all around the state. We are excited that
they will be joining our Business Expo and working with our businesses. In conjunction with Connect for Health, there
will also be insurance companies that are part of the exchange program present where you can receive information and get
some questions answered.
Our keynote speakers will be Tim Merriman and Lisa Brochu, authors of numerous books and the
one that caught my attention as to bring them to Pagosa Springs: “Put the Heart Back in Your
Community”. Tim and his wife Lisa have over 40 years experience working with communities all
over the world. We are lucky that they just happen to live in Ft. Collins, Colorado and had a slot

As in the past, we will also have opportunities for vendors to have booth space
and tout their business and time for people to roam the Expo and explore the vendors.
The day will start off with a luncheon and luncheon speaker and then continue
throughout the day with other interactive speakers and sessions and the Expo will end
with a networking reception. Show your support of the business community by
becoming a sponsor for the Expo. There are many options available. Vendor space will
be made available soon. Expo tickets include lunch and the reception. Stay tuned for
more information and mark your calendar now for this important community conference.
2014 Sundowner Hosts
Changes are coming !
In the past, members had to come to the Chamber on October 1st and pick a number from 1-10 if they wanted
to host a Sundowner. Then, beginning at 8am, the business with the number 1 chose the month they wanted to host
the Sundowner. It continued sequentially until all the months were filled in.
For 2014, the Chamber Board of Directors is discussing other options. To that end, we will be notifying
members about the changes via email, newspaper and radio and let you know the details about this opportunity to
have members visit your business, network with others and have some fun, food and fabulous libations!

Hestar Ranch is breeding, raising, training and selling Icelandic Horses at the Farm/Ranch south of Pagosa Springs. Icelandic horses are smaller horses that are gaited, sure-footed and smooth to ride. They are between 13 and 14.5 hands,
come in all colors and are charming and sensible riding horses for people of all ages. The Icelandic Horse is unique, especially because of its incredible talents and gentle temperament. The breed is known in many parts of the world, it is highly
respected for its qualities, its special spirit and the five gaits. There are four- and five-gaited Icelandic horses. Walk, trot
and canter/gallop are well known to all horse people, but additionally the four-gaited Icelandics have a very smooth 4-beat
gait called Tolt. The five-gaited Icelandics have the ability to run at a flying pace in addition to the Tolt, which is highly
prized in Iceland.

The Geothermal Greenhouse Partnership (GGP) was created to unite the geothermal resources of Pagosa Springs with a
belief in environmental education, the promise of sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, and a shared vision for the
community. Their mission is to harness renewable solar and geothermal energy in growing safe, affordable food for local
people; provide an attraction for visitors year round; create educational opportunities; nurture local businesses and create
jobs; cultivate community pride and develop economic vitality and sustainability. The GGP is building a threegreenhouse park for education, food production, economic development, beautification and community gardening. This
grassroots, community, permaculture project will use publicly-owned, geothermal wells to power (heat) the
geodesic-dome greenhouses, which are locally designed and built to grow healthy food for residents and for sale
regionally. It is designed as a demonstration of how a small community can harness its three intrinsic, local, renewable
resources: solar, geothermal and people to re-imagine, reinvent and reinvigorate itself.

Sky View Motel
In case you don’t know this already, the Sky View Motel has new owners—Matthew and Lera Boyle. Sound
familiar? They also own Pagosa Springs Funeral Home and Cremation Services, which is right next door to Sky
View.
The Sky View Motel still has a rustic, mountain feel to it but Matthew and Lera have added some different
furniture to the inside and new paint on the outside. I’ve seen families playing in the “front yard,” so I know they
have created some friendly places on the property. They have customized the registration area to reflect their interests. Check out the posters on the wall and their vinyl (record) collection.
