The troupe that rode to the Sault to celebrate Christmas with our friends in Chapter Q had a blast and survived a wintery blast on the way home! Speaking of having a blast, we are already planning the 2014 trip with expectations that we stay at the casino for an “after party”. A special thanks to Gordy and Ella for buying lunch on the way home, I’m glad the first bill was in error and the total cost was much lower, $5,000.00 did seem like a lot for a dozen burgers!! BTW, I just got another check from MIS for $100.00 for our work at the races. This was our last check and was a bonus based on the customer survey’s given out during the race. The response was clear that we were helpful, cheerful and a big part of making their race experiences a good one. Thanks to those of you who helped work this event, it was a huge success and… I’ve just completed the initial paper work for the 2014 races, hope to see ya all there!! Have you taken a look at our 2014 calendar yet? We have a lot of great rides/events planned for 2014 and you’ll want to get them on your calendar to start the planning process. I’m convinced that January and February were designed to provide preparation time for the upcoming riding season so make sure you take full advantage of them and; ensure your bike maintenance is done, your vacation time is scheduled, and get ready for summer!!! Ride Safe. Ride Often. Tom & Darlene Taylor Chapter J Directors From Jim and Kathy Chapter J Rider Educator In a recent Rider Ed talk we were reminded how important it is to have the right mindset before riding, starting with a clear mind to allow not only the enjoyment of the ride but also to allow giving the attention and focus required to see ahead and avoid potential hazards. Seeing such situations in time to react is our job as riders and obtaining or refreshing the skills to maneuver safely from harm’s way is another job we should happily embrace. Registering for the earliest course possible is a two-fer it will not only give you greater confidence during early season riding, but the early sessions can mean a much more comfortable temperature on the course in the afternoon. One of the skills we will hear discussed involves the strategies of lane placement to more easily be seen. Being seen is a multi-faceted process, and pre-ride choices can be a strong complement to the ride time tactics. During Chapter J's Color Ride this past fall a stop at the Iron Pony cycle store yielded two of our company donning new 'high visibility' helmets before we headed home. This was another two-fer, not only taking responsibility for protecting their heads but also making a fantastic jump in visibility in congested traffic. Recent Wing World advertisements show hi-vis mesh jackets being offered, brake light circuit attention grabbing electronics are available too. The choices abound for increasing your odds of being seen so you won't have to use some of those skills offered in the ARC. So please in addition to taking the course, give hi-visibility options a consideration if you are shopping to replace worn gear this spring. Chapter J is a wonderful group of people and the time we’ve spent with all of you has been “The ride of a lifetime”. Speaking of rides, you never know when a birthday celebration will turn into a face full of whipped cream. So, don’t miss out! Since we are new to being ACDs, we have no idea what we’ve gotten ourselves into. Therefore, I (Jeff) am not very computer savy so if you need to reach me, the old phone is best. On the other hand, my counterpart (Terri) is a little better at electronic mail so be my guest to contact her. Here’s to another year of fun rides, awesome company, and a lot of laughs along the way… Jeff & Terri Chapter J Assistant Directors Chapter J 2014 Couple of the Year Cost per person $25.00 Deadline is at the January 05, 2014 Gathering Contact Gary Williams @ 517-788-4538 for more information From Don Chapter J MEC Coordinator & Chapter J Assistant Directors Gary & Carol Williams Website Coordinator Hi! Hope 2013 was a great year for everyone. Hard to believe we’ve started another one. We definitely have had the Michigan winter weather mix… rain, sleet, snow, and everything in between. Terri even blew out a pair of boots in December. We’ve had a wonderful holiday season though with both our boys home for the first time in 3 years. Wingless Weekend will be here before you know it and we hope many of you can make it this year. No matter whether you participate in the Chapter’s skit, beaver breeding, ice cream social, or just enjoying the camaraderie with other Michigan Chapters, it’s a great time. We feel very honored that you have chosen us as this DON’T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT 6 Cascade Wings From Mary Dodge Newsletter Editor Hi! Everyone Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. This year we went to my Family in Arkansas for Christmas and had a great time. We always do when we get together. We stayed an extra day, but got home before the bad weather came. You know who is down with a cold, but getting better. This year are some changes in the Chapter with new Chapter Assistants Gary, Carol, Jeff, and Terri, Rider Educator, Jim and Kathy, Treasurer, Lori Norkey, and Activities Cordinator and Sun Shine Person, Monica Rodman. Be sure to let them know how much we appreciate them stepping up for these positions. I’m sure they will do a great job for Chapter J. Congratulations Guys! January starts the year off with the Fish Fry at the Red Fox Sportsman’s Club, then the CPR First Aid Class, Wingless Weekend in February. Be sure to check the Web Site, and emails for any changes. Your Newsletter is not always up to date on changes or cancellations since it is only published once a month. If you have any suggestions on dinner rides let Randy Know. It looks like there are some openings in January and February. I want to thank all of you who filled out my Favorite Ride Sheet. Look on this page and page 8 to see if you can guess who said what. Have a great month, stay warm, and ride safe Notice on Ride meeting changes All Rides will leave from the East Side Meijers by the Gas Station, or the West Side Meijers from behind the Gas Station Pictures Needed More pictures are needed to help Peggy create our 2014 Brag Book. If you are going to any events, please take your camera and get some pictures, also if you have a cell phone that takes pictures use that as well. You can e-mail, snail mail, put them on a CD or Flash Drive and give them to Peggy at one of our Monthly Gatherings, Any thing you can do is greatly appreciated Guess Who Said My Favorite Ride/Event/ Vacation/or/Rally # 1 It’s all about the People, Long or short rides are fun but, the people we ride with are the best!! As Tom and I add more miles and smiles to our Goldwing I’m beginning to see that wherever we go, we have fun. Now as you may know, I’m not into the twisties or high speeds, like someone else we all know, the scenery is nice and the radio is great. However, our food/fule stops, breakfast, dinners and other excursions are really the best part of being a member of Chapter J. Whatever we are doing together seems to be FUN. Our jokesters are always trying to stir the pot while others are busy helping with a route, meal or other important function. The friendships we have made, like the memoires, will last a lifetime. So, with the last little bit of ink I’d like to say thanks to all of you for being our friends, you all mean a lot to us! # 2 I enjoy Every Ride, my bike is so much fun to ride, and the company or should I say “FRIENDS” I ride with are the best people I know. # 3 So many rides, so hard to choose! But I nearly skipped this one, Midnight Ride Mackinaw City, and yet it is one of my favorites. Staying right on Lk. Huron (thanks Cheryl), finally able to have a brew at he brew pub, (thanks Terri, Jeff, Randy). But my favorite part was the nightly bonfires (thank you to all who helped). The stars, the cookies, conversation, laughs, perfect nights. This has been the best year, loved it all Chapter J. # 4 Hawaii. We took a helicopter ride over the island of Kuaii with Charlie and Kim Brown. The scenery was breathtaking and I (????) got to sit up front, in the middle right next to the pilot. # 5 The Ohio run w/Jeff and Terri, the Spring Ohio Run and Zip Lineing. # 6 Hocking Hills/Zipline Ride ????? Says, The fall 555/ Bridge/ color ride ??? Says. # 7 Punta Cana—We went with (guess who). We had such a great time, we are going back next year. It was just a very relaxing time with some great people. More people from this chapter are going next year. # 8 We rode south for the color tour. There was no color, but there sure were a lot of interesting happenings. Saw a super charged Corvette with a big blower and a River Boat ride in one day. 7 Cascade Wings # 9 Color Tour was our 1st and hopefully not our last bike adventure. I enjoyed the 555 but ???? Did not because he had to navigate the hills and curves. Chapter J’s New Patch # 10 Out West in June. Seeing all of the sights along the way. A GREAT TRIP! # 11 The Color Tour into Ohio and W. VA. This was our first multiple day ride we had ever been on. There wasn’t much color, but ride was still beautiful. # 12 The Bike trip to Hocking Hills and the Zip Line. What a blast. # 13 Our 39 day, 7,000 mile trip to bad we had to come back. 2nd Ohio Color Tour. # 14 Ohio Color Tour Nice weather and got to know more about other members and it was about riding. Have fun, and see how many you get right. No prize for the most number right, but just pat yourself on the back for knowing your fellow chapter members so well. Answers will be in the February News Letter. See how easy it is to write an article can’t wait to hear from all of you again GET WELL GREETINGS Secret Buddies 2014 Hope all is well in the Chapter J Family this month Hi!
