This $150 million investment represents the largest capital investment in South Central Kentucky in a decade. The company is a newly formed joint venture that brings together business leaders from Japan and several different countries across the European Union to create a new facility right here in South Central Kentucky that will serve the North American automotive market. In July, we were honored to welcome the Governor and company officials from all over the world right here to Bowling Green to break ground on their Transpark site. This announcement joins 4 others so far this year for over $187 million in investment and over 330 new jobs created. It’s truly an exciting time to live and work in South Central Kentucky. Another exciting development that has taken shape over the summer is the crystallization of a motorsports initiative in South Central Kentucky that will encompass everything from economic development to education to tourism. You will be hearing more about this initiative in the coming months, but we’re very excited to have a strong Steering Committee and community partners already on board and working to expand and market our already impressive motorsports commu- Chamber Board of Directors nity. An exciting start to this new initiative is the appointment of Executive Committee Member Dave Tatman as the inaugural Executive Director of the Kentucky Automotive Industry Association. Congratulations to our colleague! In mid-July, our Chamber received notice that we have been named one of four finalists nationally for the ACCE’s 2014 Chamber of the Year. This is an exciting milestone! Chambers all over the country submit a detailed operational survey just for the chance to be invited to apply for Chamber of the Year. It’s an honor to even be invited to apply and a bigger honor to be named as a finalist. I am so proud of this accomplishment. I am not sure that many know what a high-performing Chamber we have here in South Central Kentucky, and I am delighted to see that our efforts are being recognized nationwide. Additionally, you may not know that our Chamber is a 5-Star Accredited Chamber, as defined by the US Chamber of Commerce. What does that mean? It means our Chamber is a member of an elite group: only 1% of the Chambers of Commerce across the nation are awarded 5-Star status. I’d like to personally thank all of our partners, volunteers, and staff who work tirelessly to make our Chamber the award-winning institution it is. Congratulations to all on these outstanding achievements! Finally I want to mention a couple of exciting upcoming events. On August 21st, we will celebrate our Coffee Hour at the WKU Center for Research and Development. Speaking will be our very own, newly minted Executive Director of the Kentucky Automotive Industry Association, Mr. Dave Tatman. On August 27th, we will welcome students back to campus with our annual Welcome Back WKU event. In recent years, this has turned into a great community event that celebrates our students and businesses alike. Plan to come…bring lots of goodies for the students…and get ready for an afternoon of fun! Hope to see you there! We are looking at ways that our faculty, staff, and students can be an even greater resource to business and industry. In particular, we are developing ways to make our resources more transparent and available to business – especially in the manufacturing sector – in our region. The Center for Research and Development houses applied research centers, the Small Business Development Center, the Central Region ICC, the Innoplexx (a student business accelerator) and the WKU Small Business Accelerator, which currently is home to 17 technologybased businesses. Most of the technical resources likely to be of interest to advanced manufacturing industry are now administered as a single Institute of Materials and Manufacturing. Within this institute, are the NOVA Center (large chamber SEM), the Center for Applied Physics and The Engineering-Manufacturing-Commercialization Center. All these facilities work with business and industry to stimulate opportunities and new enterprises. Faculty and staff bring experience and knowledge to the forefront to assist company needs. A university like WKU is a complex institution that can be hard to navigate. We will be launching a new web portal as a single landing point for business and industry. The new portal, along with a new management system, will make it easier for business to find partners within WKU. Kentucky’s Automotive Industry and Its Impact on South Central Kentucky The Bowling Green area is home to many automotive related industries. In fact, the automotive industry has a widespread impact on the state. According to the Cabinet for Economic Development, Kentucky produced more than 1.2 million vehicles in 2013 and the state ranks third overall in light vehicle production and first per capital. Kentucky’s 460 motor vehiclerelated establishments employ nearly 82,000 people. To make the Commonwealth a more prominent automotive powerhouse, the Kentucky Automotive Industry Association (KAIA) has been created to bring together Kentucky auto manufacturers and suppliers. “The association will play a vital role in addressing the challenges, solutions and opportunities facing the industry. It will also allow us to highlight successes and elevate the state’s contributions to the global automotive industry,” said Governor Beshear. An individual that is no stranger to the Bowling Green community was chosen as the individual to elevate Kentucky as a global leader in the automotive industry. Dave Tatman, former general manager of the General Motors Corvette Assembly Plant, will serve as the inaugural executive director of the organization. Dave will also be working with WKU to customize university resources in the areas of engineering and manufacturing to the needs of local industry with prototyping, commercialization, and innovations. He will provide guidance and mentoring to the NIST Manufacturing Extension Partnership, Advantage Kentucky Alliance and integrate WKU into the regional Motorsports initiative. His background in industry will provide faculty and staff the insight needed to respond to the engineering and manufacturing community. The Joint Venture will create 80 new jobs and the plant is being designed for future expansion beyond the initial target. On July 2nd, Governor Beshear joined local, company and elected officials to celebrate the groundbreaking of the Constellium-UACJ Body in White Plant in Bowling Green just two months after their initial site selection decision. The companies signed the international joint venture in May and announced their $150 million investment in an automotive aluminum sheet production facility in the Kentucky Transpark. “What an exciting day for Bowling Green and all of Kentucky,” said Gov. Beshear. “This huge investment will further solidify our role as a key player in the auto industry. I want to thank Constellium N.V. and UACJ Corporation for locating here, and I look forward to seeing the impact of this operation.” “We are really thrilled to mark the official start of the Bowling Green plant’s construction today”, said Constellium’s CEO Pierre Vareille. “This project is highly strategic and it is the first milestone of an ambitious strategy to become a major player in the fast growing US aluminum body sheet market” Constellium, a European aluminum company and UACJ, a Japanese aluminum company will supply an initial target capacity of 100,000 metric tons (approximately 220 million pounds) of cold-rolled aluminum coils, which will be treated and processed in Bowling Green. “Today, we are very pleased to take the next step forward to the initiation of the Joint Venture with Constellium. We are committed to deliver advanced products to our customers from mid-2016 onwards, utilizing the technologies each party has separately developed in EU and Japan,” commented Shigenori Yamauchi, Chairman of the Board & CEO, UACJ. 6 | Chamber Connection “The multinational project team has worked hard over the last year to go that far and it is great to see the alignment of both shareholders,” stated Pat Franc, President & CEO of Tri-Arrows Aluminum, a fully controlled subsidiary of UACJ. “We were honored to be chosen as the site for this project,” stated Chamber Board Chairman John Mark Fones. “This is the largest investment in our region in more than a decade. But what is even more exciting is the companies’ dedication and eagerness to begin production. Their aggressive timeline for construction means more jobs for our region’s residents in a short amount of time. This is a company that is looking to succeed, but more importantly they are looking to grow. We couldn’t be happier to have them here in South Central Kentucky.” The plant will produce finished aluminum body sheets for the North American automotive industry responding to the growing demand for aluminum in automotive manufacturing. Consul-General of Japan Motohiko Kato, based in Nashville, was in attendance to celebrate the Joint Venture and the growth of the manufacturing sector in the region. “It is truly an honor to be a part of this project that represents such a strong partnership among companies from around the world. The decision of this joint venture to bring their operations to Bowling Green attests to the attraction of our strategic location and skilled workforce. We have no doubt that they will be a perfect fit for the collaborative spirit and automotive hub here in Warren County. We congratulate them on this landmark in the process and look forward to their success here in South Central Kentucky,” stated Judge Executive Michael Buchanon. Both the City of Bowling Green and Warren County were instrumental in helping to bring this project to South Central Kentucky, in addition to many other organizations throughout the Commonwealth. A thank you luncheon was held in May with more than 50 individuals in attendance to celebrate the collaborative efforts. The finalization of the joint venture remains subject to regulatory approvals which are currently expected in the second half of 2014. The initial announcement of the joint venture is among five total announcements for the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce in 2014 for a total capital investment of more than $187 million and the creation of over 330 jobs. “Both regional and global competition is intense,” stated Consul-General Kato. “But there is no doubt that Kentucky lies at the heart of one of the world’s most important manufacturing regions.” “Our corporate citizens are such an important part of the growth and development of our community,” stated Mayor Bruce Wilkerson. “When we have a company that comes in ready to hit the ground running, we know that their dedication and investment will allow them to succeed here. The impact this joint venture will have on Bowling Green will be great and I believe there is no limit to the success they will find here. We appreciate their confidence in our community and look forward to working with them in the future.” www.bgchamber.com Thank You Partners for Renewing Your Chamber Investment AA Rid-All Termite & Pest Control AAA Systems, Inc. R Overhead Door Company Of Bowling Green www.bgchamber.com Chamber Connection | 9 ® Your Chamber is One of the Nation’s Finest! The Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce, 2009 Chamber of the Year, was recently named one of four finalists nationwide for the American Chamber of Commerce Executive’s (ACCE) 2014 Chamber of the Year. Chamber of the Year is the nation’s only award recognizing the dual role chambers have in leading businesses and communities. Chambers honored with the Chamber of the Year designation have not only demonstrated organizational strength, but also have made an impact on key community priorities such as education, transportation, business development and quality of life. The Chamber of the Year award involves a multi-stage process, which includes a detailed operations survey, application and interview. Only a handful of chambers nationwide are asked to compete beyond the operations survey. The application process takes several weeks, with each department submitting detailed information and case studies on initiatives completed throughout the previous year. The finalists are then named based on the scoring of the in-depth application process. From there, each finalist chamber will undergo a 45 minute interview in front of a panel of 4 judges. “We couldn’t be more proud to once again be named a finalist for the Chamber of the Year Award. The invitation-only application process is rigorous and comprehensive, and we wouldn’t be here without the hard work of our volunteers, our Chamber leadership, and our professional Chamber staff,” said Tonya Matthews, Vice President of Partnership Services at the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce. “Winners of the Chamber of the Year must wait a designated number of years before submitting again. After winning in 2009, we’ve waited to return and are thrilled to make finalist again on our first shot.” “The Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce maintains a strong focus on the needs of our partners and the growth of our community. We work in collaboration with our local leadership on a regular basis to ensure our partners have a community with a strong local economy and vibrant quality of life where their businesses can grow and prosper. We are delighted to be recognized by the ACCE for our efforts,” said Chamber CEO Ron Bunch. Winners for the award will be announced at the ACCE Annual Convention August 12-15, 2014 in Cincinnati. The Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce is also a 5 Star Accredited Chamber of Commerce, as named by the United States Chamber of Commerce. The accreditation process is a comprehensive examination of every aspect of a Chamber’s operations over a 2 year period, including governance, finance, human resources, government affairs, program development, technology, communications, facilities, and benchmarking. According to the US Chamber of Commerce, only 1% of the Chambers of Commerce in the United States have achieved 5 Star Accreditation. The Bowling Green Area Chamber is proud to have achieved the 5 star milestone, and is currently seeking reaccreditation, which will be announced at the end of August. “Achieving these two significant milestones isn’t easy. Our Chamber is among the elite. I’m not sure that it is common knowledge that out of more than 7,000 chambers across the country, we are ranked in the top 1%, according to the U.S. Chamber’s thorough evaluation process. This means that our partners have a Corvette when it comes to chambers, and they helped build it!” said John Mark Fones, Chairman of the Bowling Green Area Chamber Board of Directors. South Central Kentucky Motorsports Initiative In April, the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce took a coalition of companies, educators, and local officials to Virginia to examine their flourishing motorsports cluster. The group visited tracks, manufacturing shops, and local educational institutions where they witnessed first-hand how each sector contributed to create a vibrant industry sector. Lessons learned from the trip include: • Motorsports spurs innovation and invention, done at a very fast pace. • Motorsports enhances the growth of existing companies in the sector and can attract a wide array of local companies. • Motorsports can create a unique and valuable branding identity for a region. • Motorsports is a high tech, high education, and skill intensive industry with alignment to many other targeted sectors like manufacturing. After sharing what they learned with several local companies, a Steering Committee was formed that will be responsible for mapping our current motorsports assets and developing a strategy to maximize those resources as we continue to grow and develop the motorsports cluster in South Central Kentucky. Look for more announcements and information soon on this exciting initiative! KAIA Announcement Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Committee Member and former plant manager of the General Motors Bowling Green Assembly Plant Dave Tatman was named inaugural Executive Director of the Kentucky Automotive Industry Association (KAIA) on July 1, 2014. The KAIA was initiated to create a unified voice for an industry sector that is profoundly important to the state’s economic health and growth. Automotive manufacturers, suppliers, and supporting entities will work together to share practices and encourage meaningful dialogue and action. We are more than excited to have one of our own at the helm of this statewide association. His industry knowledge and experience will no doubt serve our state and region well as we go forward in advancing our already impressive automotive sector. We look forward to working closely with Mr. Tatman and the KAIA as we embark on an initiative to better understand, market, and expand motorsports in South Central Kentucky. Congratulations! 14 | Chamber Connectionwww.bgchamber.com Small Business Spotlights Mc Whorter Chiropractic Dr. Jeremy McWorther is a graduate of Greenwood High School and The University of Kentucky. He attended Logan University in St. Louise, Missouri, where he received his Doctorate of Chiropractic degree. Over the years he was able to extend his training and expertise by working in multiple clinics and rehab centers. He is very experienced in multiple chiropractic techniques, such as Graston Soft tissue Technique and Cox-Flexion-Distraction. Dr. Jeremy is always eager to learn more and further his knowledge to serve his patients better. He is very involved in the community and enjoys public speaking and participates in many events relating to education about public health and wellness. His practice is dedicated to improve the lives of the patients, with individualized treatment plans. Whether you search for pain relief or optimal athletic performance, Mc Whorter Chiropractic is the place for you. Dr. Jeremy has partnered up with Jason Appling, of Appling Massage Therapy. Jason graduated from the Middle Tennessee Institute of Therapeutic Massage in 2003. He says about himself:” I am a husband and father of two. I have trained in Martial Arts for 20 years and received a black sash in Martial Arts in 1999. I enjoy working out and taking care of my body. Massage therapy is not just a job but my passion to help others.” He has joined the McWorther Chiropractic office to get folks better. Over the years, he has seen many people suffering from pain he had dealt with himself. He tried physical therapy, pain relievers and visited many other healthcare professionals; nothing seemed to help. Jason found that massage therapy is a gentle way to help the body heal itself. Neuromuscular therapy releases trigger points that cause knots and tension, and pain in the neck and back muscles: all this and more can be helped. It is amazing how massage therapy helps pain and has no side effects. His primary goal is to decrease the pain, increase range of motion and help to restore normal function. Southern Lanes began as a one stop sport shop where bowling balls were drilled. In 1984, it was transformed into a 24 lane bowling center, which included a small snack bar, a lounge and only a few arcade games on Campbell Lane. As business began to grow, Southern Lanes outgrew their small bowing center and in 2004 decided to relocate to the Scottsville Road location. Southern Lanes have now become a family fun center with something for everyone. With 34 lanes, miniature golf, batting cages, arcade, billiards room and lounge area. The fun never ends! An angel investor provides financial backing for small startups or entrepreneurs, usually on a local or regional basis. The capital they provide can be a one-time injection of seed money or ongoing support to carry the company through difficult times. Angel investors generally come in after “family and friends” money but before the company is ready for venture capital. Angel investors invest their own money, where the typical amount raised ranges from $50,000 to $2,000,000. These investments are considered high risk/high reward for the investor. Since angel investors are very often individuals that have held executive positions at successful businesses, they can often provide valuable advice and introductions to the entrepreneur, in addition to the funds. According to the Angel Capital Association, there are over 330 groups in the United States and Canada that are active within the startup community. In Kentucky, we have something called the Kentucky Angel Investor Network – or Kentucky Angels. The Kentucky Angels bring new ventures and accredited investors together via monthly online meetings, providing investor access to early-stage deal flow on a statewide basis. New legislation passed this year will allow an investor to claim up to 50% of their investment as a tax credit for qualifying investments; a major incentive for investors. Governor Beshear recently announced eight regional pitch competitions to be held around the state during the summer, with winners receiving cash prizes and a chance to present in front of the full Kentucky Angels Network in Frankfort. One of our own local companies, Connected Nation Exchange (CNX), was recently one of two winners at the Elizabethtown competition. Here in South Central Kentucky, we are fortunate to have our own investment group, SOKY Capital. This group meets as needed to hear pitches from Kentucky companies looking to start up or expand their operations. For more information about the SOKY Capital Network, please contact Ron Bunch at [email protected]. After seeing the results of The Leader In Me program in a handful of schools, we committed as a community to making sure our children had the benefit of this life changing program. Every child. Every school. As a Chamber, we began a campaign to raise $1.6 million to fund The Leader In Me in every school, K-12, in the Bowling Green and Warren County school systems. In the last 3 years, your generosity, dedication and support have been unparalleled. We now have The Leader In Me active in all 19 elementary schools, including 2 that have reached Lighthouse status; all 5 middle schools; and we look forward to the groundbreaking high school curriculum to be implemented in the 2015 school year. And we have you to thank for it.
