Ya’ll Come On Out
To The Post-Parade
Dinner Social
at The Prairie House
Didn't make it to the Porsche Parade this year? Or maybe you did, and want to
show off your new hardware and software (trophies and photos)? Well, come
on out to the Prairie House restaurant in Carrollton on Saturday, August 11, for
Maverick Region's Parade Recap Dinner.
We're asking everyone who went to the Milwaukee Parade to please bring their
hard-earned swag for show-and-tell in our private room. If a lot of folks have
video to show, we'll do our best to arrange a way to display it. Please mention
this in your RSVP.
Dinner will be a brisket & chicken BBQ plate with mashed potatoes
and cream gravy, tossed salad, rolls, pickles, onions, BBQ sauce
and peach-blackberry or
apple cobbler for dessert. Yum! Soft
drinks and iced tea are also included in
the fixed price of $17 per person ($6 for
kids 8 and under). A cash bar will be available, too.
Please RSVP to Mimi and Carey Spreen
(NOT to the Prairie House) at 972-4209953 or [email protected]
by Wednesday evening, August 8.
Late RSVPs and walk-ins will be charged
$20 per person, so plan ahead and get
those reservations in by Wednesday!

Prez Says:
by James Shoffit, Maverick Region President
All the preparations had been done. Tires were
balanced and inflated. Everything loaded. Trailer all
hooked up to our new Expedition. Brake controller
working perfectly. Sure I was leaving for the Zone 5
Shootout in College Station a little later than I had
planned, but I still had plenty of time. I should be
able to arrive by 9 or 10 and still get plenty of sleep.
I was fully loaded and just picked up speed passing
through downtown. I saw a rented U-Haul truck pulling an open
trailer with a silver 914 on the back with the widest flares I have ever
seen. I kept up with them for a while. Then the phone rang.
Wendy called to tell me that our 1990 C4 Cab was running poorly
and was about to make her late. She had our daughter Jasmine in the
car, and they were desperately trying to get to her dance rehearsal on
time. Our nephew Cameron was in the car as well. Wendy said it just
pretty much died in the middle of the road and smoke was pouring
out of the back. Not good. After several minutes of discussion I
decided to turn back around.
Thirty minutes later had me arriving at the scene and a friend
took Wendy and the kids to the dance rehearsal. Late, but still in time
to practice some. In the mean time, I could not get Ivory started, so
began unloading Ebony from the trailer. Boy it was hot. After getting
Ebony off the trailer and parking her a short distance away, I began
loading Ivory. I had to push it to get it lined up (another guy in an
83SC – not even a club member) stopped to help me push her up
close. Luckily he left before he saw the entire comedy of errors. It
started with me not putting down the trailer’s rear stabilizers before
winching the car up. So the rear of the trailer dipped down and the
tongue went up. In a fit of insanity, I thought that releasing the tongue
from the Expedition was the solution and would bring the trailer back
down. Quite the opposite! The front of the trailer rocketed into the air
as I released the hitch. So I start jacking up the back end of the trailer.
After a little bit of bending metal I had it level enough to continue
winching.
Maverick Region was VERY well represented there. Out of the
18 drivers at the autocross, 11 were Mavericks (the Houston guys
who didn’t show up blamed a rain storm or something like that). The
only class we didn’t sweep was the 84-89 Carrera class, but none of
our members brought 84-89 Carreras, so what could we do ?
As I write this, we are getting
ready for Parade. Maverick will be
well represented there as well.
Lanean has packed up the
Enthusiast Of The Year trophy and
we are ready for another fun-filled
week of Porsches and Porsche
People. If you have never tried a
Parade, you must really make an
effort some time. You can’t imagine
it till you go to one. I am sure I will
have more to write about next
issue (after we get back).
Lanean Hughes
2000 Enthusiast of the Year.
The board meeting (they aren’t called Bored Meetings anymore
– show up to find out why) will be July 12th, a THURSDAY, at my
house. There will be plenty of Parade stories there, I bet. And there is
an SCCA Rally on the 15th. Then on the 21st and 22nd, is our
Mineral Wells TT/AX weekend. So come on out, and join the fun!
PRINTER OF SLIPSTREAM SINCE 1982
Then I heard the sprinklers. Then I realized I had parked Ebony
right next to the sprinklers. Then I realized I had left the windows down.
Wendy and the kids got back from the dance rehearsal just as I
had finished loading Ivory and wringing the water out of the seat of
Ebony. We towed Ivory back to the house and I had to unload all my
packed stuff from the Expedition and load it into our 78 911SC. Not
a pretty sight. The passenger seat was loaded to the point that 5th gear
would be a REAL challenge. I had to leave the Expedition as Wendy
(with 2 kids) would have otherwise been without transportation. And
so again, I departed for College Station. It was now after 9 p.m.
The grey skies faded and the blue skies came out (even though it
was dark). I arrived at the motel only a little after midnight and got
my 6 hours of sleep. The next morning, we got the course set up and
ran a pretty smooth, very fun event. It was the lowest-stress autocross
I had ever been to. We had hired corner workers (who also got fun
runs at the end of the day), and so people came and went as they
chose. Some people dropped by just for their runs; others stopped and
chatted a while.

Pam’s Page
by Pam Abdalla, Slipstream Editor
Despite the heat, I was glad I participated
in autocross #3 at Standridge on June 3rd.
Also, despite the well-intentioned discouragement from several folks, I was glad I insisted
that my husband, George, be my instructor.
You see, it’s well known that husband instructors tend to get too worked-up and might bop
the wife on the head if she happens to take a
corner improperly. I was quite confident in
mine, however, and he proved to be a great instructor, staying
calm and collected, directing me through the course. I didn’t get
bopped once, not even when I kept “shuffle-steering” (a no-no)
and kept bumping the windshield wipers, accidentally turning
them on over and over again. He also maintained his cool when
I kept looking in the rear-view mirror to see if I had just hit a cone
(also a no-no).
My decision paid off in the end. I kept improving my time,
and was able to achieve top time for ladies in my class. I’m very
proud of that, considering it was only my second time ever. I
must thank my instructor for a job well done. Of course, some
could argue that the windshield wipers gave me an advantage,
acting sort of like ‘spoilers’ as I went through the turns.
Look for more highlights of autocross #3 in the August issue
of Slipstream. See you then.
Maverick Minutes
by Andy Mears, Maverick Region Secretary
Maverick Region’s June Board meeting was
held on June 6th at the home of Wendy and
James Shoffit.
The meeting started around 7:00 PM,
immediately after a pizza dinner.
Sunday AX was a great success, but we still
need more people to register online if possible.
Online registration expedites the check-in
process as well as maximizing driving time during events. Go to
the web site and check out the form located in the “Driving
Events” section (www.pca.org/mav).
One Lap of DFW had over 80 cars participate and raised a lot
of funds for both Hope Shelter in Mineral Wells and Familiar
Footsteps in Dallas. Congratulations go out to the One-Lap team
for putting in all the extra time to make the event the success that
will hopefully encourage more participation next year.
In the interest of keeping things interesting the board voted
to move the monthly board meetings to Thursday nights. The
July meeting will be held on July 12th. Since the board meetings
are open to all club members, everyone is welcome to come and
see how the club’s elected board members tackle the really hard
decisions, like where to order pizza from. Look for the map in this
month’s issue and get involved.
After many years of hard service the club’s radios are starting
to show their age. With the combination of failing batteries and
failing units the board passed a motion to purchase additional new
units and additional batteries. The new units will be compatible
with the existing ones and should offer more flexibility as the club
continues to grow and participate in more events that require the
need for better radios.
The meeting was brought to a close around 9:00 PM.
See you at the July board meeting - and remember, it’s on a
Thursday night!
Please note that all remaining Board Meetings for
2001 will be held on a Thursday night,
rather than a Wednesday.
Check the website or Slipstream for the correct dates.
Maverick Region PCA board
meetings are held once a month.
The board meetings are open to all PCA members and your
suggestions and opinions are welcome . . .
. . . and there’s FREE Pizza!!!

May at Mayo’s
by Carey Spreen
After long minutes of research in my Slipstream archives, I
have discovered that Maverick Region's dinner meeting known as
May at Mayo's had its humble beginnings in 1998. Ussery
Printing was having their company picnic on a Friday afternoon
in May, and the tables and chairs that they had rented were not
due back at the rental place until Monday. "What the Heck," said
Fran and Carl Ussery (I'm paraphrasing here), "why don't we put
these tables and chairs to work again and have the Maverick
monthly dinner meeting at Mayo Performance?" And a tradition
was born.
Well, this year the Ussery company picnic is in the fall, but
that didn't prevent Fran and Carl from renting tables and chairs
anyway (old habits are hard to break, I guess) and having them
delivered to Mayo Performance for another go at North Main
Barbecue's delicious all-you-can-eat dinner.
More than 80 Mavericks showed up and got their fill of
brisket, sausage, ribs, chicken, and all the fixins, as well as all the
beer and/or soft drinks they could consume. (Well, if they didn't
get their fill, it was their own fault!) This year's dinner was
actually the final event of a Porsche trifecta. The afternoon began
in Haltom City at the Sturgeon Vehicle Collection, a group of
over 60 vehicles owned by Ron Sturgeon and cared for by our
own Bill Dugan. Then a poker rally designed by Joe McGlohen led
from Haltom City to Mayo Performance in Euless. A poker rally is
just what it sounds like--you draw cards at each "checkpoint" and
whoever has the best poker hand at the end of the event wins!
An added bonus at Mayo Performance were scale models of
a four-stroke engine, a 4-speed transmission, and a differential.
All were hand-operated and cut away at strategic locations so the
uninitiated, like me, could see what actually happened inside
those big old hunks o' metal under our cars! Provided by the
Sturgeon Collection and arranged by Bill Dugan, these working
models helped explain a lot about how engines, transmissions,
and differentials actually do what they are supposed to do.
Thanks again to the Usserys, the Mayos, Bill Dugan, Ron
Sturgeon, and Joe McGlohen for another fun afternoon and
evening in our Porsches.

“Santa-Cross” at Mineralring
by Richard Louis Todd
Twas 2 days before May
and what did dawn bring?
Some 50+ autocrossers to the Mineral Ring!
They showed up in Boxsters and 944s,
914s, 911s and oh so much more.
Then what to their wandering eyes did appear?
But a new kind of course, one that seemed awful queer!
"Who did this?" they shouted, "and what does it mean!?"
"It's Charlie's," they said, "and we think it's quite keen."
"The four boxes at center have four gates apiece!"
"And there's a hundred different ways to navigate this beast!"
"We've added a slalom and one pivot cone,
in hope of you all finding your way home."
So they walked it and walked it and still scratched their heads.
"This is way too much thinking! We just got out of bed!"
But James grabbed the green flag and started the show
And they scrambled to see which ways the first ones would go.
Some of them did great, some only did fair.
Some did so bad we won't even go there!
But they'll always remember, and that's a sure thing,
the day Charlie went "boxing” at the Mineralring.

Autocross #2 and Time Trial #2
by Dean Yamada
The North Texas (Maverick Region) Porsche Club put on an
excellent autocross event the weekend of April 28 and 29th. It
was quite a fun, fast, and challenging course. I highly recommend
their events if you want great seat time! The event ran smoothly
and was well organized. We had 8 run and the course was 84-120

Happy Hour at Champps Americana
by Tinker Edwards
The regular Happy Hour in May was held on Thursday the 17th at Champps Americana
on Beltline in Addison.
The day before the Happy Hour, I receive a phone call from Dennis Chamberlain. His
voice had a tone of concern wondering if he did the right thing by inviting a "guest" to our
happy hour. I assured him it wouldn't be a problem. Dennis is a conservative CPA, very
laid back so I couldn't understand his concern about his "guest."
Well, it's happy hour day and I am waiting to meet our invited "guest"(I have to admit
I made Dennis tell me who it was). I'm trying very hard to not stare when the invited
"guest" arrives, as you can see from the photo it was none other than “Cher” aka Karen
Kelley. I had to leave early that evening but I understand she did sing for the group!
Besides Cher, we had Sandy and Mike Lapp join us from the Houston Region along
with new members Ford Howland, Mike Billinghausen, and Tom Widmer. Also, Steven
and April Dodd found us on the web while looking for a 911 and decided to check us out.
We’re glad they did!
Join us for our next Happy Hour Thursday, July 26th at 6:30 p.m. at Stone Trail in
Addison. See page 3 for more details!

Moonlight at the Oasis
by Mike Oakes
Yes, Virginia, there is life south of I-30! At the beginning of May, we decided to do
something a little different for a Thursday night Happy Hour. We headed south to the
Oasis restaurant on Joe Pool Lake in Grand Prairie.
The evening started out overcast, which didn't bode well for later planned activities
(more on that later), but there were no damp spirits at the Oasis bar. At least 15 to 20
Mavericks filled up the entire bar area, including new member Bill Rosenberg, and reactivated members Ed and Kim Vanderveen. I won't try to list all the attendees as I'm sure I'll
forget a few, but I will mention that it was good to see some of my fellow southern DFW
residents such as Keith Bird and Bob Morris who were glad to have a short drive to a
Maverick event. We still had plenty of the Happy Hour regulars, and I think Karen
Pederson probably took the long-distance award, driving in from McKinney (luckily she
didn't know where the Oasis was when she set out, otherwise I don't know if she would
have made the trip).
After a dinner of fried catfish & hushpuppies (there was other food, but who cares?),
a devoted group set out for the aforementioned night activity. The Oasis sits adjacent to
the dam on the northern end of Joe Pool Lake. There is a closed road along the top of the
dam, which is perfect for running, biking, or blading. It is especially nice under a full
moon. Luckily, the weather gods were good to us, and the clouds had cleared out nicely.
After inspecting the Cochran's Boxster S missile defense system, an intrepid band set
out for a moonlight blade/stroll, with myself and Keith Bird braving the in-line skates, and
Bob Benson, Tinker Edwards, and John and Suzanne Cochran taking to tennis-shoes.
Although Bob and Tinker swear there was not a lake out there, Keith and I know better you just have to walk a little farther.
Luckily there were no casualties, and after a great night of food, fun and fellowship,
we all headed back to our cars, only to find a wayward Maverick wandering the parking
lot in his 911, looking for the party (name withheld to protect the innocent, okay Ofer?).
John Cochran digging in!
Bob Morris with reactivated members Kim and Ed Vanderveen.

One Lap of DFW - A Hounding Success!
By Linda Bambina, Registrar
All shined up at the winner’s circle inside Texas Motor Speedway.
The Maverick Region of the Porsche Club of America can be
extremely proud of its latest charity accomplishment. Our club
raised over $5,000 to be divided between two local charity organizations that are lesser known by most folks, but who have great
needs. While the members of our club know about the Hope
Shelter in Mineral Wells, Nelson Hodges, originator and chair of
this day-long event, wanted his favorite charity, Familiar
Footsteps to benefit as well. Familiar Footsteps is a home for
mentally challenged adults.
The format of the event was basically to bring as many
specialty car clubs of North Texas together to show, parade and
visit with other people who have a passion about their vehicle
marque and to generally have fun. We had about 90 cars representing 14 different car clubs. The Z Club of Texas won an award
for the largest showing and they could have won an award for the
Most Exuberant group, if we’d had such recognition. They even
had one member, Tomi Bailey, who drove in from Houston for
the day! Other groups in attendance included Texas IMOC,
Metroplex Early Birds (Ford Thunderbirds), GTO Association,
Texas Cobra Club, Morgan Motor Car, Viper Club, S2000, Lone
Star Corvette Club, BMW Club, and the Mini Cooper Club.
The day began at dawn, Saturday, June 2nd for our own BB1
and BB2 (that’s Bob Benson and Bob Bianconi, mighty Mavs who
were the nuts and bolts, Click and Clack, Co-Chairs of the entire
day’s activities) at Six Flags Mall where there was a People’s
Choice Car Show and an appeal for “votes” with donations.
While the event attracted few visitors from the local area, the
participants themselves chipped in even more cash and the two
People’s Choice awards went to Mavericks Kent Haven and Nancy
Dugan. I personally voted for Carlton McMillan’s white Xterra,
artfully splattered with mud on just ONE side and oh-so-clean on
the other!

Police escort to Grapevine Mills Mall.
At mid-morning, the car show caravanned to Texas Motor
Speedway for lunch, for photos, to buy MORE raffle tickets and
for a chance to watch practice laps by Team Texas (a driving
school on location). Or you could purchase practice laps of your
own for a Fall Charity Event at TMS. This portion of One Lap
was expertly organized and orchestrated by Lanean Hughes and
included some surprise Air Conditioning! Thank you, Lanean.
We were then escorted to Grapevine Mills Mall by the Flower
Mound and Lewisville police departments. We thank Sam
Morehouse (Corvette Club) for getting this part of the day safely
organized. It was now time for the Awards and Raffle portion of
the event as well as a presentation of the checks to our adopted
charities. Shelia Wilson had graciously come out from Mineral
Wells to accept our donation on behalf of the Hope Shelter and
Nelson accepted for Sarah Thomas whose own son was the impetus
behind the creation of this particular type of home for those with
severe and persistent mental illness.
There were actually only about 35 Mavericks who were present
at this new event. Ten of those folks were part of the One Lap
committee and then about 10 more were volunteers who either
entered and worked or just came to help out at one or more of the
locations. Several Maverick people not yet mentioned in this
article deserve your thanks for an incredible job on a difficult
“invent the wheel” event: Jan Mayo, Jay Walker, Kay Leibel,
Lanean Hughes, Doug Molny and Hill Bullock. Ed Mayo, Fran
Ussery, Susanna Kavanaugh (who brought in $260 in personal
sponsorship pledges!), Tinker Edwards, Annette and Tom
Snodgrass, Wendy Shoffit, Al Stickley and Al Leibel all helped
with various aspects of pulling this class-act off in Mahvelous
Maverick style!
A vintage Morgan.
Spectators enjoying the show.
Jean Marshall, a special friend to Warren Bushey, Mr. Zcrazy
himself, and One Lap committee member, had some comments
to make about the event.: “Thanks to all the Porsche people who
took the time to work out all the details. Some of them put in a
lot of time and effort to make this enjoyable for all. These people
worked really hard to pull this together and deserve a big hand of
applause. But most of all, thank you Nelson Hodges for your
dream. For being there all these months with your dedication,
strong will, but most of all for helping us see this through. To all
of those who couldn’t make this, you missed a great time. Let’s all
look forward to next year when we can do this again. Look out
Nelson, it will be bigger and better.”.
(If you were not able to participate in Maverick Region’s First
Annual One Lap of D/FW, but would like to contribute to the
event, please send your donation to Bob Knight, club treasurer.)

How Fast?
By Charlie Davis
One of the most common questions I see on the Rennlist is
something like: "When my speedometer reads 70 MPH, my
tachometer reads 3200 RPM. I have different tires and I'm sure
my speedometer is not accurate. How fast am I really going?"
Unfortunately, this question is often answered incorrectly.
The most common incorrect answers are:
1. Measure the error of the odometer, by comparing it with
highway mile markers, then assume that the speedometer error is
the same.
2. Look up the answer in the back of your Owners Manual
(there is normally a transmission diagram that shows the relationship between RPM and MPH, assuming standard tires), then
calculate the difference between the diameter of the standard tire
and the new tire and use that to compute the real velocity.
3. Use one of several on-line "calculators" to figure out the
answer.
The last two are difficult and rarely give good answers. The
first one has a serious flaw. The relationship between the
speedometer and odometer is tenuous. They both normally are
driven from the same cable, which comes from a fitting on the
transmission. They are also commonly mounted in a single case.
But they are separate instruments. If the speedometer cable
breaks, both the odometer and speedometer stop working. Other
than that, there is no connection...the "calibration" of the
speedometer is totally separate from the odometer.
A normal analog speedometer is an eddy current motor. This
involves a non-ferrous rotating conductive disk or cup and a
stationary magnet (or the opposite...a rotating magnet and a
stationary conductive disk or cup). The relative motion between
the two induces an eddy current in the conductive disk or cup.
This eddy current creates a drag torque that is directly proportional to the relative velocity. If the stationary component is
suspended with a spring, the drag force will "wind up" the spring
until the spring force exactly equals the drag force induced by the
rotational velocity of the speedometer cable. The stationary
component is attached to a pointer, which indicates the velocity
on a scale.
Normally, speedometer shops that perform "calibration", use
the fourth technique. They fully magnetize the magnet (from the
outside of the speedometer case, without opening it), then they
operate the speedometer drive at a specific, accurate rotational
velocity and note the indicated speed. It will be high. They then
demagnetize the magnet in small increments until the speedometer
gives the correct reading. Most VDO speedometers are marked
with the RPM and speed at which they are calibrated.
Notice that this adjustment of the speedometer doesn't affect
the odometer at all! The odometer is directly (gear) driven off of
the speedometer cable and can not be adjusted.
So when you change tire sizes, you can adjust the speedometer
to be accurate again, but it's difficult to adjust the odometer.
The bottom line is that you need to check your speedometer
and odometer separately. So how is a speedometer checked? Go
out and find a lightly traveled road with mileage markers. A
straight, flat road is best. The TxDOT has some special 10-mile
highway sections that are designed for speedometer and odometer
calibrating...they are more accurate than the normal mileage
markers. Drive for 10 miles at a constant speed and measure
the time (in seconds) that is required. Your correct speed can be
computed by this formula: MPH = 36,000/Time
For example, if your speedometer indicated 70 MPH and it
took 550 seconds (9 minutes and 10 seconds) to travel 10 miles,
your speed is really 65.45 MPH and your speedometer reads
6.9% high.

A speedometer can be "calibrated" in four ways:
1. Vary the spring force on the stationary component
2. Vary the spacing between the magnet and disk or cup
3. Vary the spacing on the scale
4. Vary the strength of the magnet

Hope Happenings
By Lanean Hughes
We recently sent a check to the folks at Hope in the amount
of $2,300, which was the amount collected from the One Lap of
D/FW. The shelter is in need of some repairs to their facility, and
this will sure come in handy. I believe there is more being collected at this time, and will keep you posted.
A trip was also made to the shelter in June to deliver a washing machine donated by Barney Barnes, a friend of Jan Mayo’s,
and a beautiful Oak table with 6 chairs, which we received from
Kelly Stellar, an employee of The Porsche Store.
The shelter would like to take the clients and their children
to some fun places this summer, such as the Imax, Zoo, and a
water park, and I hope that we as a club can help fund these trips.
Please stay tuned for more information.
Thanks for helping us to keep “Hoping”!!
