This program is a sneak peek of this year’s fun, free lineup of San Diego River Days events! Full event details, directions, and RSVP online at www.sdriverdays.org. 21 Julian (unless noted) SATURDAY, MAY 9TH 1 River Park Festival 3:30 - 8 pm Location: Town Center Community Park in Santee The River Park Festival is a family-friendly event focused on environmental sustainability with live music, craft beer, kid’s corner, BMX and skateboard demos and a green car show. Host: City of Santee Location: Mission Valley Strap on your walking shoes for a four-mile, brisk walk along the San Diego River Trail in Mission Valley. Host: Walkabout International 7 2 River Park Festival Tree Planting 8 - 10 am Location: Walker Preserve, Santee Help the City of Santee support the Monarch butterfly by planting Milkweed along the newly opened River Trail. Learn about butterfly habitats and how to identify native versus invasive plant species and how they affect the environment. Host: City of Santee 3 6 Guided River Walk 9 - 10 am San Diego River Run & Ride 5K 3:30 - 5 pm Location: Town Center Community Park in Santee Run to raise awareness of the San Diego River. This year’s theme is Sustainable Superheroes, so don’t forget your cape and mask! Please visit the website for registration fees and information (note: This is NOT a free event). Host: Lakeside’s River Park Conservancy 8 Native Plant Garden Summer Facelift 9 - 11 am Location: Point Loma Come join the River Park team as we work to enhance this beautiful native plant garden in Point Loma. Host: San Diego River Park Foundation 9 4 A16 Backpacker’s Swapmeet 8 am - noon Location: Mission Valley A special event for outdoor enthusiasts! Fun day includes a vendor fair, parking lot sale and lots of discounted pricing. Come to just browse or upgrade your gear! Host: Adventure 16 Location: Ocean Beach Paint beginner to intermediate level scenes of the San Diego River estuary, beach, pets and people. Event includes a “lucky drawing” for an original piece of artwork. Bring your own art materials. Meet new people and make a positive impact on the environment! Host: Friends of Tierrasanta Canyons Location: Old Town Travel back in time to 1769 as you learn about the native plants that provided food, medicine, fiber and tools for the Kumayaay people on a native plant garden tour. Host: California Native Plant Society Location: Mission Valley The Mission Valley Library will host a petting zoo with pony rides and a river-related craft project. Fun activities for kids to learn about how they can help the San Diego River too! Host: Mission Valley Library Location: Dog Beach, Ocean Beach The San Diego River Mouth needs your help! Join us as we work to clean up Dog Beach and the surrounding area for humans and canines alike. Host: Friends of Dog Beach 9 EXPLORE d DISCOVER v VOLUNTEER 23 These events will allow you explore the great outdoors in your neighborhood and beyond. Most require walking, hiking, or other physical activity. These events are learning opportunities to discover new ways to experience and appreciate the River. These events feature volunteer opportunities to care for sites along the San Diego River through stewardship. Love Your Mother 3 - 5 pm Location: Normal Heights Kids and families are invited to visit the Creative Reuse Store to craft a river-inspired Mother’s Day card using recycled materials. Host: Art FORM 17 Tierrasanta Canyons Habitat Restoration 8 - 11 am 13 Native Plants of the San Diego River Valley 10 am - noon 15 14 35 4 20 19 13 23 Silverwood Streamside Hike 10 - 11:30 am Location: Lakeside Silverwood’s tributaries that empty into the San Diego River are of ecological importance. The naturalist will discuss the stream’s residents, both small and great, on this easy hike. Learn about the River and connect with your community! Host: San Diego River Park Foundation San Diego Fly Fisher’s Casting Clinic 9 am - noon Location: Lake Murray Come out and work on your fly casting technique with certified instructors. Beginners welcome! Bring your own equipment or borrow ours. Host: San Diego Fly Fishers Mother’s Day Hike 9 am - 3 pm Location: Santa Ysabel Open Space Preserve Eight miles (round trip) with beautiful views of the San Diego River as it runs through Santa Ysabel Open Space Preserve. Host: San Diego River Park Foundation 22 Fitness Class on the River 9:30 - 10:30 am Location: Santee Families with children 5-8 years old are invited to celebrate the San Diego River with stories and crafts! Host: Santee Branch Library 16 Location: El Monte Valley near Lakeside Join Allied Climbers of San Diego, the San Diego River Park Foundation and El Monte County Park Rangers for a clean-up of the El Capitan Trailhead. Host: Allied Climbers of San Diego and San Diego River Park Foundation 19 Mother’s Day at the San Diego River Garden 9 - 11 am 21 15 River Days Storytime 2 - 3 pm San Diego River Bike Ride 10 - 11:30 am Location: Ocean Beach to Mission Valley Enjoy a family fun ride and learn about bicycling opportunities along the San Diego River Trail! This interactive program includes a leisurely hike and a chance to identify animal tracks out in the field. Host: San Diego Tracking Team Location: Point Loma This 37-acre wetland is home to many different species of birds and animals. Join the team to help restore this area to its natural beauty. We’ll use GPS devices to find both trash and hidden cache boxes with prizes! Host: San Diego River Park Foundation 26 Coastal Habitat Restoration 9 am - noon Location: Ocean Beach Join us for a guided tour and restoration activity at this unique coastal habitat. You will learn about flora and fauna and efforts to protect this threatened area while working to restore it to its original state. Host: San Diego River Park Foundation 27 Mission Museum Open House 9 am - noon Location: Mission Valley Relive two centuries of history by touring the museum and learning about California’s first mission, located on the banks of the San Diego River. Host: Mission San Diego de Alcalá 28 All About the Watershed 9 am - noon Location: Alpine Learn about the San Diego River watershed while touring Alpine Creek! Learn how to test the water quality and help water newly planted trees and shrubs. Host: Back Country Land Trust 33 Edgemoor Barn Open House 10 am - 2 pm Location: Santee View displays of activities along the River from 1890-1940 with a focus on the San Diego River’s influence at the historic Edgemoor Barn. Host: The Santee Historical Society 29 Forester Creek Clean-Up 9 am - 1 pm 34 Headwaters Hike and Species Survey 10 am - 2 pm Location: El Cajon Location: Boulder Creek Preserve near Descanso Volunteer to help remove trash from upper Forester Creek in Explore the beautiful San Diego River headwaters and help El Cajon, a tributary of the San Diego River. survey the native and invasive plant species in the area. Find out by joining this 5-mile moderate hike. This hike is mostly in a section of the preserve that is closed to the public, so this is not to be missed. Scenic views guaranteed! Host: San Diego River Park Foundation 32 River Bugs Are Cool 10 – 11 am & 11:30 am – 12:30 pm Location: Mission Valley Bring the kids to this one hour event and learn about the cool bugs that live in our River. Join us for either rotation. Fun for the whole family! Host: San Diego River Park Foundation SUNDAY, MAY 17TH San Diego River Trivia and Happy Hour 2 - 4 pm You are invited to join fellow River Days participants, hosting partners and friends for San Diego River Trivia! Start envisioning a water-wise landscape of your own to protect water resources! Host: The Water Conservation Garden 36 Famosa Slough Bird Walk 1 - 3 pm Location: Point Loma Birders and nature lovers are invited to an easy, guided walk to spot birds around this salt marsh habitat. Bring your binoculars or borrow ours. Host: Friends of Famosa Slough 37 Canyoneer’s San Diego River Walk 10 am - 12 pm Location: Mission Valley Learn the ins and outs of your San Diego River on this guided walk through a portion of Mission Valley.
