2013 Colorado Dugout Club Hall of Fame
Ceremony and Banquet Review, 2014 Preview
In 1936, the Baseball Hall Fame inducted its inaugural class. This class included Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth,
Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson, and Walter
Johnson. Each man was a “giant” of the game of professional baseball.
In 2010, the Colorado Dugout Club imitated the Hall
of Fame’s efforts by electing 19 “giants” of Colorado
baseball, and in 2011 added 15 incredible men, and
10 more in 2012 to its Hall of Fame.
The 2014 class will be immortalized on the evening
of Friday, January 17 during the 6th annual Colorado Dugout Club Hall of Fame and Awards Banquet.
Dress for the dinner is “Business Casual.”
We are proud to announce that Mark Gustafson of
the Colorado Rockies will be our keynot speaker on
this wonderfu evening, and it will again be emceed
by ThunderRidge Head Coach Joe White.
This night will again be a “can’t-miss” event so make
sure to register and include it in your plans!

It’s hard to believe, but baseball season is just around the corner.
You know that we will have a period in January where the weather is perfect for baseball and then. on February 24, when there
is snow on the ground and you’re staring at it in disbelief because just a week or so before it was sunny and dry, your mind will
be on all things baseball and not on the administrative things that I have to remind you of.
So, let’s get those administrative things out of the way:
•
Formal practice begins February 24. Any practice up to that point is considered informal and cannot be used for
evaluative purposes, cuts cannot be made, assignments to levels cannot be made, the practices cannot be mandatory.
•
Please note that the NFHS Baseball Rules continue to put the onus on the coach regarding use of legal equipment. It is
your responsibility to ensure that your players are using legal bats, helmets, and other equipment.
•
The baseball committee met November 19 to address the upcoming cycle, but also to make recommendations on
adjustments for the 2014 season. Those “tweaks” to the 2013 season must be approved at the January 30 Legislative
Council, but will include for the 2013 season:
o Wild Card points for out of state schools will be based on the out of state school’s winning percentage, not
wins/losses.
o Games played after May 3 will NOT count in that percentage (the extra days are needed to gather that
information for seeding on May 7).
o All individual loss points have been lowered by five points.
o These recommendations must be approved in January, but will take effect for the 2014 season.
•
Recommendations for the next competitive cycle, which includes the 2015 and 2016 regular seasons, include the
following:
o Class 1A, each district will qualify two teams to regional competition.
o Class 2A, no changes were made to the playoff format for the next cycle.
o Class 3A, adjustments in the number of qualifiers by league were made and qualifying procedures were
established for Liberty Common and Sky View Academy.
o Class 4A, adjustments in the number of qualifiers by league were made and qualifying procedures were
established for Ponderosa and Valor Christian. There will be from 2 to 4 Wild Card qualifiers depending on Valor
Christian and Ponderosa.
o Class 5A, there will be 23 automatic qualifiers with the remaining 9 determined by wild card points.
o Seeding is different for each class and that process can be found in the baseball Legislative Council report found
at www.chsaa.org, then Click on Member School Info & Tools, then Legislative Council and Baseball report.
o MaxPreps will be the sole site for schedules and results. It is mandatory that all schools use MaxPreps.
MaxPreps will keep a running total of Wild Card points based on the table developed by the CHSAA Baseball
Committee.
Every day is a new opportunity. You can build on yesterday’s success or put its failures behind and start over again. That’s the way
life is, with a new game every day, and that’s the way baseball is. – Bob Feller
