Funding For The Future With Bernard “Bernie” Behrends
SPECIAL HONOR ROLL OF DONORS EDITION The Official Alumni Publication of Lincoln College, Lincoln, Illinois SPRING/SUMMER 2010 Funding For The Future With Bernard “Bernie” Behrends By Kathleen H. Wheeler Omni Communications Group Lincoln College philanthropist Bernard “Bernie” Behrends shares a passion for education espoused by the prominent gentleman for whom his hometown was named. In his first political announcement in 1832, Abraham Lincoln wisely noted “Upon the subject of education, not presuming Anna K. ’36 & Bernard E. ’48 Behrends to dictate any plan or system respecting it, I can only say that I view it as the most important subject which we as a people can be engaged in.” In keeping with Lincoln’s sentiment, Bernie Behrends has devoted his personal time and financial resources to provide higher educational opportunities for those less fortunate in the community. The Behrends philosophy of charity was instilled early in childhood through the teachings of the Lutheran Church. Bernie and his older sister Anna were raised by their widowed mother and grandfather to help others when possible through service to their church and the public. They were taught to view their contributions as a privilege that would ultimately strengthen society as a whole. Blessed by success and prosperity as adults, Bernie and Anna have sustained these fundamental Christian principles through consistent and generous donations to their alma mater, Lincoln College, hoping the recipients of their charity will someday “pay it back” by helping others as well. Bernie was born in Lincoln, Illinois on July 27, 1921 and received his primary and secondary education through the Lincoln public school system. After being honorably discharged from the United States Navy in 1946 following three years of active duty during World War II, he was allowed to pursue his post-secondary education through financial assistance provided by the GI Bill of Rights. Bernie attended Lincoln College from 1946 through 1948 and upon graduation continued his studies at Bradley University in Peoria from 1948 to 1950. He graduated from Bradley University with a bachelor of science in general engineering and worked the next thirty-two years as a civil engineer with the Illinois Department of Transportation until his retirement in 1982. While successfully advancing in his profession, Bernie put into practice the charitable lessons of his youth and began helping others by volunteering his time and talents in numerous capacities. First he served for six years as vice president of Immanuel Lutheran Church and treasurer of their building committee until 1963. During the Vietnam War, Bernie worked as a member of the Logan County Selective Service Board. He then was assigned to the board of trustees at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital from 1967 to 1973, followed by an eight year stint as a member of the Logan County Election Board. Finally in 1992, Bernie was elected to the board of trustees at Lincoln College, an educational appointment that he holds in high regard to this day. As if this impressive record of service isn’t enough, Bernie is also a lifetime member of a long list of admirable organizations, including The American Legion, Forty and Eight, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Veterans, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks #914, Lincoln Masonic Lodge, Springfield Consistory, Ansar Shrine, Logan County Shrine and the Legion of Honor. From his position on the board of trustees at Lincoln College, Bernie Behrends has worked to provide financial assistance for needy, worthy and qualified high school graduates from Logan County who wish to better themselves through a quality education at Lincoln College. In 1998 with the support of his sister Anna, Bernie established the Anna and Bernard Behrends Endowed Scholarship Fund, allowing more than forty students to attend college since its inception. In 2002 Bernie was instrumental in founding the Nurses in Training, Logan County Voiture 985 of the Forty and Eight Scholarship. To date this program has helped over 150 students pursue an education in the field of nursing. So great are Bernie and Anna’s contributions that the new admissions building on the Lincoln College campus was dedicated in their honor in 2002 and is now known as the Anna K. and Bernard E. Behrends Admissions Building at Lincoln College. Bernard “Bernie” Behrends continues his legacy of educational service to Lincoln and the surrounding community with no apparent signs of slowing. When pressed to explain why he and his sister Anna have dedicated their lives and resources to the educational pursuits of the underprivileged, he responds simply with conviction, “Education is what’s important! We knew we could do more to help others, the whole point in life is to help people.” Honest Abe would undoubtedly agree. The decision to step down as President was not an easy one for my wife, Jean Ann, and me. We have been honored to serve in the leadership role here, believe deeply in the mission of the College, and have had the opportunity to work with many wonderful faculty, staff, and students. For most of the past 28 years I have been involved in high-level college administrative work. I have served as a president for three institutions of higher learning and as a state higher education executive officer. This year seemed like a good year to “hang up the cleats.” It is gratifying to leave at a time when the College is in good health. A number of important things have been accomplished in the last several years which give me great confidence in the future of the institution. These accomplishments include: 1. Development of a balanced budget and the retirement of significant debt. 2. Completion of the Lincoln Center, which will aid enormously in recruiting and retaining students. 3. A necessary re-engineering of the mission of Lincoln College – Normal resulting in six new bachelor’s degrees in the past five years and the establishment of the Center for Adult Learning with an enrollment approaching 250 students. 4. Research to determine the critical predictors of college success and the establishment of admission requirements that reflect this research. 5. Initiation of a very popular massage therapy program at Midwest College of Cosmetology. 6. Creation of the ACCESS program for students with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. 7. Revitalization of the Office of Institutional Advancement and the initiation of the College’s first comprehensive campaign. It is important to note that I cannot claim most of the credit for these accomplishments. I have simply followed former G. E. executive Jack Welch’s motto in his book Straight from the Gut: hire the right people and get out of their way. Therefore whatever accomplishments can be touted during my tenure are most certainly the product of hard work by many people besides myself. As I noted earlier, I consider the future of Lincoln College to be very bright. This is a very unique college in the landscape of American higher education. There is definitely a place for an institution in the Midwest that focuses on transforming students’ lives, whether they be traditional college-age students at Lincoln or adult learners at Normal. I am very proud to have been given the opportunity to serve as President and will continue to watch the progress of Lincoln College with great fondness. Thank you for your continued support of this fine institution. 2 www.lincolncollege.edu/alumni Lifetime Giving Honor Roll In Memory Lincoln College deeply appreciates these distinguished individuals & organizations who have given generously by choosing to invest in our students & the mission of this institution. I wanted to be a part of it, and to help make this much-needed facility a reality. -Tom and Dorothy Komnick www.lincolncollege.edu/alumni 11 The Lincoln Log In Memoriam Donald Lee Hilscher Alumnus (class of 1958) and former Lincoln College Professor Don Hilscher passed away January 19, 2010. With his death the Lincoln College family lost a great and compassionate teacher and friend. Over his 48-year career at LC, Mr. Hilscher taught a large portion of the natural science curriculum, including Biology, Botany, Zoology, Medical Terminology, and Anatomy and Physiology, to over 1,000 students. He instilled an awe of nature in his students, whose lives he touched and in whom he inspired a lifetime love of learning. Many of his students so embraced his love of science that they pursued careers in the field, and are now veterinarians, dentists, research chemists, marine biologists, and nurse anesthetists. For many students, Mr. Hilscher was more than a professor; he often became their friend, staying in touch and encouraging them in their educational, professional and personal pursuits. Just months before his death, he inquired about a student with whom he’d lost touch. His students were in his thoughts and remained an important part of his life even after he retired. After his death, several former students shared memories and testimonies. Former student Amy Tebrugge Owings (class of 1972) had this to say about her former professor: I believe I am speaking for my brother, my college roommate, as well as many others who regarded Hilscher as one of the best—if not the best—teachers we ever had. Not only could “the Chief ” bring science to life, he inspired you. He held us accountable. He asked the hard questions. Hilscher made you think. He would tell us, “Always look under the rock,” referring to the things that might not be immediately visible. His enthusiasm for discovery was contagious. Very few instructors made the impression on me that he did. I owe so much to him for not giving me the answers but making me discover them myself. I will miss him. Another former student, Adrienne Harmon (class of 2001), sent this reflection: His excitement was evident in each lecture where sometimes he would jump on top of tables to demonstrate! He instilled a passion in each and every student as we began our journey down the road of medicine. Upon graduation from Lincoln College, he kept close tabs on me throughout my many years in college. A simple smiley face in the return address section of the envelope was all Mr. H would put, and I would instantly know it was a letter from him in the mail. A note came without fail during boards, during clinical, during licensure… When I became a dentist in 2008, he was the first person to send a note of congratulations addressed to “Dr. Adrienne Harmon.” He was a colossal reason I was able to earn my doctorate and pursue my passion for medicine. I give thanks to Mr. H for his teaching, motivation, and many “smiles” he sent along my journey. Mr. Hilscher is survived by his wife, Mary Hilscher of Lincoln, Ill.; four sons, Jerry (and Wanda) Hilscher, Donnie Hilscher, Danny (and Denise) Hilscher and Jeff (and Amber) Hilscher; two step children, Matthew (and Cindy) Wilson and Stephanie (and Ryan) LaPlante; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
