ACCent Magazine THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE ATHLETIC CLUB OF COLUMBUS • SINCE 1912 SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER 2015 The New Member Meetup on August 13 brought together more than 60 new and current members over cocktails and casual conversation. The event was sponsored by the ACC Blue Wings. The ACC Annual Golf Outing was held at Pinnacle Golf Club on August 17. Forty-three members hit the links for the outing. Congratulations to Scramble winners Tim D’Angelo and team (pictured right) and Stroke Play winner Steve Jeffries! 2 • ACCent Magazine My how time flies! As I write this, the Undisputed National Champs have reported for football practice, it seems like only yesterday they were hoisting the trophy. Very soon sign-ups will begin for our fall squash and basketball leagues. New fitness classes will be offered to members of all ages. Our chef will be preparing new items for your culinary experience. We continue to receive very positive reviews in social media regarding our ability to host wedding receptions and other events. Looking back, our 2014-15 fiscal year will have closed as of August 31, resulting in a net member growth of 35 new members and the 4th year in a row of net income. Your Board has been very active this summer as it reviews plans for an updated facilities master plan and takes a deep dive into the budget process for the 2015-2016 fiscal year. As previously noted, our “crown jewel” clubhouse turns 100 years old this year. As members, I believe we all have the responsibility to continue to move the ACC to a higher level than when we joined. Each year we use resources for the general upkeep of the building, including many “behind the scenes” projects such as maintaining our freight elevator, staircase repairs, and replacement of carpeting and window furnishings. Additionally, resources are needed to retain and develop dedicated staff in the dining, athletic and other areas of the club, with whom we interact on a daily basis. Over the past year, your Board has reviewed all aspects of the club’s operations and capital spending. We want to make sure that the cash flows generated from the operations of the club, along with the capital dues received, are maximized for enhancing the member experience and for the best return to all members. We have also done a deep dive on previous capital improvement projects to make sure we can use those “lessons learned” to plan future projects. This past year, we will have re-invested approximately $600K in capital improvements. CLUB NEWS W. Michael Fritz President institute minimums in order to encourage use of their dining facilities. This amount has not changed in the 30 years that I have been a member. Our food and beverage costs have increased significantly over that period, so the “level” of use required to meet the minimum today is much less than it was when the minimum policy was last set at $65. To further encourage members to utilize our dining options, the Board also decided to allow food and beverage purchases anytime on Saturday or Sunday to apply against your minimum (in addition to after 5 PM purchases Mon. through Fri.) The members of the Board of Directors, in concert with our Club management team, have worked rigorously over the summer to budget appropriately for the year ahead. To prepare for our future, it is necessary to keep the Club relevant and compelling for both our current members Effective with the quarterly minimum cycle and for those who have yet to join. With beginning September 1, we will be increasing the quarterly minimum by $10 per quarter. Clubs that being said, we have determined that a nominal operating dues As of September 1, 2015 increase of approximately Membership Category Dues Capital TOTAL Minimum 2% paired with a capital Resident $209 $36 $245 $75 dues increase is needed Associate $129 $19 $148 $75 to maintain our positive Associate 32 - 33 $161 $19 $180 $75 trends and to achieve even Associate 34 - 35 $188 $19 $207 $75 greater success. Overall this Social $106 $19 $125 $110 represents a 5% increase in Non Resident $65 $11 $76 -dues for a Resident member Clergy $105 $16 $121 $75 (please see the dues Privileged I $67 $12 $79 -schedule below). Privileged II $121 $19 $140 -- CLUB NEWS Paul Kroll, Jr., CCM General Manager Share your member experience online! Follow the ACC, post your photos while you’re at the club, and connect with fellow members. #myclubACC 4 • ACCent Magazine We have officially ended the 2015 fiscal year with a net gain in membership of 35. This outcome far exceeds the Board’s goal set last summer of a positive 7 members for the year and marks the first time that membership rolls grew in the past 18 years. Board President Mike Fritz points out this same fact in his letter that you just read on the previous page, but news this good bears repeating! Looking back over the past 10 years, we can see how The ACC has taken decisive steps to navigate the rough water that separates the club of yesterday to a club of now, and the future. In 2005 the club purchased the parking lot, introduced childcare services, and began modernizing the programming to be inclusive of the modern club member. In 2008, the Board recognized the dues and fees as insufficient to sustain any club, let alone a platinum level club experience, and increased fees to correspond to ACC standards. In recent years, the positive operating income has enabled the club to get back on track addressing improvements and area facelifts that are long overdue. The positive relationship that’s developed over the past 10 years of vision and execution with the increase in membership is not a random phenomenon. The club industry has plenty of examples where the clubs’ boards have built upon successes to maintain relevance and freshness. While the ACC Board and committees are hard at work, the staff is also working to build upon past successes. The coming year will bring continued focus on programming for the areas of fitness, food and beverage and social programming. By the way, you would be correct to point out that similar things are said every year. To that, it is important to add that a main source of energy for the staff is seeing how much the membership enjoys an aspect of the club that they have a hand in offering. It is because of this pride in service that we are comfortably confident that an ever increasing level of service is achievable. This past year, Chef John Wolfe and his kitchen staff have done a terrific job. Reviews from weddings, corporate receptions, and member events have revealed an unprecedented string of over-the-top positive reviews. The club’s food is frequently acknowledged with fervor. Typically, reviews read something along the lines, “…my guests and I agree that The ACC has the best reception food we’ve ever had.” We hear similar rave reviews from our members about the pizzas introduced last year in The Booth, as well as the cocktail and beer programs that have begun flourishing. Your club is like no other place in Columbus. We look forward to experiencing delicious food and drinks, innovative events and programs, and exceptional service with you this year, all while keeping your membership and the club fresh for years to come. LIFE BRINGS CHANGES From time to time, life brings changes that affect our financial picture: new jobs, promotions, retirement, births, deaths, marriage or divorce, etc. Such life changes make it necessary for us to periodically review our financial plans to determine if they are still working toward our current and future goals. If you would like a free consultation, please give us a call. Membership growth surpasses goals The fiscal year wrapped up on August 31, at which time the number of net new members over the past year was finally calculated. While we continue to welcome new faces to the club month after month, we also resign members each month due to relocation, job changes and the like. The goal is always to welcome more members than we lose. The goal for this past fiscal year was to end with a net positive seven members when all applications and resignations had been accepted. With the opening of The Booth last fall, paired with overall excitement and engagement throughout the clubhouse, we are ecstatic to report that the ACC ended the fiscal year with a net positive 35 members! This number was achieved by the dedicated members who continuously share their member experience with others, as well as by the leadership of the Board of Directors and committee members who work to drive the club forward. We are all looking forward to another very bright year ahead! ACCent Magazine • 15 100 YEARS Forty-seven Columbus business men, believing in the future of their city and confident of the demand for a large and wellequipped club with athletic and social features, gathered together on the evening of September 26, 1912, and organized the Athletic Club of Columbus, with Mr. Henry J. Booth as its President. By May 1, 1913, less than six months after organization, the Club membership had grown to over 800. Consolidation with the Ohio Club was then effected, and on July 1, 1913, the Athletic Club of Columbus began operation in its own quarters on the twelfth floor of the Columbus Savings & Trust Building (now known as The Atlas Building,) with an enrollment of 1,000 members and a waiting list. Plans were soonthereafter launched for a new home for the Athletic Club of Columbus. After careful consideration of a large number of available sites, the Club determined upon the location known as the Trinity House Property, on the north side of East Broad Street, between Third and Fourth Streets, fronting approximately 93 feet on Broad Street and extending back 187 1/2 feet. Construction was soon underway for the permanent club home. In November 1915, the doors to the newly erected Athletic Club of Columbus clubhouse opened. 16 • ACCent Magazine 100 years “Capture the Moment!” Celebrate 100 years of the ACC clubhouse!
