As 14 Wing Greenwood
Commander Colonel Iain Huddleston settled into the rear
seat of the Fleet Finch, pilot
Chris Cormier pointed out the
controls: “Here’s the brake.”
“We won’t need that much
with an 8,000 foot runway,”
Huddleston said.
“You don’t need much of
anything!” Cormier replied.
The bright yellow plane is a
74-year-old flying “museum
piece,” one of just a few still
able to take to the skies. It’s
part of the Canadian Vintage
Wings collection of Second
World War and Cold War
training aircraft. Four of the

Will the show go on?
14 Wing Greenwood Commander Colonel Iain Huddleston would like to think
movies at the Zedex Theatre
will continue to screen for his
military families and the wider
community, but a solution to
projection technology “is not
easy.”
The Zedex Theatre is privately owned, a concession
with a rental agreement for
space in 14 Wing’s Birchall
building. The base uses the
theatre for large-audience
audio visual presentations as
part of its operations; the Zedex operates in the evenings,
offers weekend matinees and
is often available for school,
group and base-wide events,
including Wing Welcome and
winter carnival family movies.
Changing technology, however, means the military’s
standard digital projector and
the 35 millimetre projector
the Zedex uses are becoming
dated: fewer mainstream movies are being released in 35
millimetre, and an expensive
upgrade is required to convert to the commercial digital
standard.
The base headquarters staff
and Zedex owners have been
in discussion, but options have
been limited.
“What the Zedex needs is a
very expensive piece of equipment that doesn’t have an
entirely rational military use,”
Huddleston says. “We can justify operational requirements,
but how do we justify nonoperational requirements?
And, if we can, where do we
find the money?”
The base operates from several different funding sources,
and much of it is earmarked
for specific spending. Funding
is limited, tied and difficult to
“combine” for complicated
projects – such as upgrading projection equipment for
the use of a private business
renting facilities from the base.
“But,” says Huddleston,
“Wing Telecommunications
and Information Services has
indicated the current projectors are becoming unsupportable, and they’re reaching
their life’s end. Last week,
one of the two bulbs in one
of the machines blew and
actually damaged it. So, it’s
really time.”
Huddleston is able to authorize the military projector’s
replacement. What the Zedex
requires is significantly more
expensive. Regardless, he

This Fleet Finch was the first aircraft to check out Greenwood’s runway, landing in the summer of 1941 as the
base was under construction for RCAF training.

Camp programs were involved,
including the 500th Cadet.
“This is a sweet-flying
airplane,” Huddleston said,
comparing his own previous
experience in an open cockpit,
home built plane. “My Dad
trained in the Chipmunk and
the Harvard – these are excit-
ing airplanes, and the amazing
thing is these planes would go
10 or 12 hours in all weather.”
14 Wing Greenwood Heritage Officer Major Bob Johnson says the Finch is actually
a significant visitor at 14 Wing,
as it was the first aircraft to
land on Greenwood’s runway
in the summer of 1941.
“The Finch was based out of
Stanley for elementary flying
training and, when Greenwood
was constructed, they sent a
plane over to check it out and it
happened to be a Finch. None
ever flew here at Greenwood
– it would have been more
advanced flying here.”
The Cadet flying initiative
was a project of the Air Force
Association and the Air Cadet
League of Canada. Those
selected for the flights were
taking part in aviation courses,
and seem interested in the
technical side of aviation and
its history.
“They may also be interested in becoming future pilots, and being able to fly in a
vintage aircraft deepens their
commitment,” says Johnson.
aux besoins d’utilisation des
FAC. Nous pouvons justifier
les besoins opérationnels, mais
comment justifier les besoins
non opérationnels? Et même
dans ce cas, où trouver l’argent? », explique Huddleston.

Mod work improves base living space
Sara Keddy,
Managing editor
It’s a room-by-room renovation many people could relate
to – especially the distant and
unclear “done” date.
14 Wing Greenwood is
steadily renovating a series of
its modular-style accommodations to meet Canadian Armed
Forces housing standards,
upgraded five years ago to improve quality of life for tenants.
People use the mods for everything from weekend sports
event housing to multi-week
courses or even long-term,
year-round residential stays.
“All it takes is time and money,” says Lieutenant Damon
Murray, accommodation officer, as outgoing Wing Commander Colonel Jim Irvine
showed off the project to his
replacement, Colonel Iain Huddleston, during one of Huddleston’s July familiarization
briefings.
Visiting flight crews from 407
Squadron have assigned accommodations in some of the
renovated housing. Summer
Cadet camp staff also use the
space regularly. The renovation
plan was designed to specifically meet Greenwood’s needs
for beds and revolving guests.
“There are peaks and valleys throughout the year,” said
Irvine. “During June and July,
we’re full.”
Each of the older modular
compartments contains three
or four two-bedroom units
with a shared washroom. The
renovation turns one of the
bedrooms into a sitting room,
with room for a small fridge and
table. The plan was to complete
Greenwood’s 26 mod renovation in three years: right now,
there are just seven units left
to be done. The cost is about
$125,000 per mod.
“This is considered a ‘small’
project, not big budget,” says
Murray. “Now, we are just
waiting on budget numbers to
finish.”
Huddleston agreed the renovation results are impressive:
“I’ve certainly stayed in one
of these, and I do notice the
difference – the significant difference.”
Doing some mental math,
Huddleston estimated completing the four last mod conversions, if there are funds free
throughout the coming year
or two, renovation contracts,
funding and work could be a
four-month “flash to bang”
project.
Colonel Iain Huddleston, left, is briefed by Lieutenant Damon Murray, right, as outgoing 14 Wing Greenwood Commander Colonel Jim Irvine led a series of familiarization
briefings for his replacement. The base’s modular housing is two-thirds through a
quality of life renovation.

Sara Keddy,
On utilise
les modulaires pour toutes
sortes d’activités : évènements
sportifs de fin de semaine,
cours de plusieurs semaines
voire même de longue durée,
séjours en résidence à l’année
longue.
« Il faut tout simplement du
temps et de l’argent », affirme
le lieutenant Damon Murray,
agent des locaux, pendant
que le commandant sortant
de l’Escadre, le colonel Jim Irvine, présentait le projet à
son remplaçant, le colonel Iain Huddleston, lors d’une

doesn’t have money for either
the military or movie grade
projector.
“We do need to find a solution, and we’re very cognizant
of the value of the Zedex to the
community – particularly our
military families. Other bases
have done this as a morale and
welfare initiative, but they’ve
done it in previous years when
funding was not so much of a
challenge.”
Huddleston is appreciative
of the complicated funding,
legal and transparency requirements 14 Wing will have
to demonstrate to access authority and funding for either
the required technology or
movie projector upgrades.
“It’s great the community
is coming together to support
the Zedex, but it doesn’t help
our business case. We have
a bit of a hill to climb, but we
want to climb it – the Zedex is
an important facility, and we
want to see it continue. That’s
not to say we’ll be successful.”
Huddleston estimates the
business case development
he will have to pursue could
take until December, and he
hopes to be able to replace the
projector in the spring of 2014.
“Whether that includes a
commercial grade digital movie projector is the issue, but
we are exploring our options.”

Mass jump training chance
for SAR Techs to practice up
Sara Keddy & Captain
Bertrand Thibodeau
They were there, and then they
were gone.
With lots of high fives, finger
pointing, hand shakes, “whoohoos” and even a little dancing
on the spot, 11 search and
rescue technicians (SAR Techs)
stepped out into 10,000 feet of
airspace above 14 Wing Greenwood August 21, leaving loadmaster Master Corporal Chris
Steward alone in the back of a
Hercules aircraft.
“On days like this, it’s hard to
believe we get a pay cheque,”
said SAR Tech Sergeant Paul
Jackman.
Two dozen SAR Techs, in
all, from 413 (Transport and
Rescue) Squadron and 439
Squadron, held their summer
“saturation training” August 19
to 23. The annual jump camp
is an invaluable opportunity to
hone parachuting skills, with
25 SAR Techs putting in two or
three jumps a day – more in a
week than they may get in five
months.
“If you just do one jump, it’s
a jump,” said Jackman. “If you
do them back-to-back, you can
correct your mistakes.”
And lots can go wrong: Jackman himself was taking a day
out after a bit of a bumpier
landing than he’d have liked the
day before.
Coaches from the Canadian
Sports Parachuting Association attended from the Atlantic
School of Skydiving to jump
with SAR Techs and share some
techniques and best practices.
The group practiced free fall and
static jumping, landing in confined spaces and got a chance
to do some tandem jumping. The
days’ schedules were “all out,”
Jackman said.
“It’s straight up and, as quick
as the air crews can turn us
around, the better. This is all
about proficiency: the more, the
better – that’s saturation.”
Gear checks, exiting from the
aircraft, air positioning, targeting and landing skills are all
scrutinized: video and photos of
all the jumps is reviewed every
afternoon. SAR Techs must be
able to deploy, regardless of
conditions, from helicopters
and fixed-winged aircraft in an
emergency to provide on-scene
medical aid and evacuation.

WLEO changes chief
Master Warrant Officer
C.R. Bradshaw
The 14 Wing Greenwood
Wing Logistics and Engineering Branch held a change of
appointment ceremony at the
Annapolis Mess July 16 to
welcome Chief Warrant Officer
William (Bill) Hinchey.
Hinchey and his wife, Colleen, spent the last five years
in Kingston, Ontario, where he
was posted to the Canadian
Armed Forces Joint Operational
Support Group and participated
in both Operation PODIUM and
Strategic Lines of Communication Detachment in Cyprus
operations.
The ceremony was presided
over by Wing Logistics and
Engineering Commanding Officer Lieutenant-Colonel Brian
Richardson, as Chief Warrant
Officer Hank Etheridge relinquished his duties and responsibilities. Etheridge will attend
the year-long French language
training course in Greenwood,
commencing in August.
Over 200 WLE branch personnel were in attendance to
bid a fond farewell to Etheridge,
marking his hard work and
dedication during his tenure; and to welcome Hinchey.
Etheridge said, with a unit of
over 600 personnel - which includes both civilian and military
personnel, the job of branch
CWO is very busy. There is
not a lot of business on the
wing that does not involve one
or more of WLE’s squadrons
or sections, Construction Engineering, Environment, GSO,
Replenishment, Transportation
and Electrical and Mechanical Engineering or Telecommunications and Information
Services. The branch extends
the very best to Etheridge and
his wife, Tanya, through the
next phase of his career.
The branch also took this
opportunity to bid farewell to
Master Warrant Officer Bill
Hanham, who retired from the
Canadian Armed Forces after
Terry Fox Run: participants,
volunteers needed
Eric MacKenzie,
Community recreation
coordinator
The 33rd Terry Fox Run will
take place September 13 in
Greenwood, and organizers
hope to see as many military
and civilian members attend as
possible. Registration will take
place at the 14 Wing Greenwood Community Centre at
noon September 13, with a
warm up at 12:50 p.m., prior to
the official start at 1 p.m.
Walk or run either the five kilometre or 10 kilometre routes
planned, or bike the 10 kilometre route. Participants under the
age of eight must be accompanied by an adult. Routes will
start at the community centre
on Church Street, then proceed
down Kingswood Rd, through
the flower streets, through the
PMQ gate, around the wing and
then back to the community
centre through the main gate.
The Terry Fox 100 kilometre
challenge is also open for
anyone who would like to run,
walk or bike 10 kilometres a day
for 10 straight days, starting
September 4 and finishing with
your final 10 kilometres during
the Terry Fox Run September
13. If you are interested, contact Eric MacKenzie at the 14
Wing Greenwood Community
Centre, 765-1494 local 5337.
This is the sixth year the
Village of Kingston will partner
with 14 Wing and, with this
great partnership, we expect
this event to be even larger and
more successful than ever. It
is also the goal this partnership will increase donations
in support of the Terry Fox
Foundation.
The need for volunteers has
also grown. The success of
this annual community fundraiser requires a great deal
of community assistance and
support. If you are interested
in volunteering, please contact
MacKenzie.
A 2013 Terry Fox Run T-shirt
can be bought at http://www.
terryfox.org/Merchandise/index.html, and Terry Fox Run
pledge sheets are available
from August 27 at the 14 Wing
Greenwood Community Centre,
Fitness and Sports Centre,
Military Family Resource Centre
and CANEX; at the Greenwood
Post Office, CIBC and Scotia
Bank; and, in Kingston, at the
post office, CIBC, Pharmasave
and Avery’s Farm Market.

Bikers rally for memorial road trip
Sara Keddy,

“Blown away” is how local
bikers felt after taking a day’s
ride to a veterans’ memorial
built by a bunch of high school
kids.
“We went down and scoped
it out – flabbergasted,” says
Darren “Willy” Williams (Old
Members of the Fortress Europe unit of the 2nd Canadian Army Veterans at the Hebron Guard), the road captain for
Afghanistan memorial earlier this year. A ride August 31 as part of Digby’s Wharf Rat the 2 Canadian Army Veterans

ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20
Now is a great time to explore new
culinary horizons, Aries. You just may
find a new type of cuisine that you
never would have anticipated liking.
TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21
Taurus, if you feel like there haven’t
been too many opportunities to
socialize with friends, host your own
gathering of friends and family. Start
planning now.
GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21
Gemini, sometimes forgetting
responsibilities and acting like a
child for a day can be good for the
spirit. Take a mental health day and
don’t let worries get you down for
a few hours.
CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22
Cancer, make travel plans before the
summer passes you by. There has
never been a better time to get out
for a road trip or book a weekend
jaunt to somewhere special.
LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23
Leo, it can be difficult to upstage
you, but someone else steps into
the spotlight at work and it has
you reeling for a little while. Be the
bigger person and offer congrats.
VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22
Virgo, you might be ultra careful
when choosing friends, but keep
in mind those closest to you have
been there through thick and thin.
Remember that this week.
Fun By The Numbers
Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid,
broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers
1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can
appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out
the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric
clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name,
the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21
Sagittarius, it’s hard to smile when

Heavy rains held off August

NSGA Senior Men’s Championship, hosted at the Greenwood

Hebb, a member of Ashburn

eagle on the par five twelfth to
propel him to victory.
Entering the day one shot
ahead of Gary Smith, and three
strokes up Gerry MacMillan,
who both play from Paragon Golf and Country Club in
Kingston, Hebb turned at the
nine up two shots on both golfers. MacMillan did his best to
catch Hebb: on the front nine

of catching Hebb, who notched
a two under. Smith meanwhile
was steady but could not match
Hebb, recording four bogeys
and two birdies and shooting
a one over on both nines.
Because of work commitments, both Hebb and MacMillan are unavailable to play
at the Golf Canada Senior
Championships. The Nova
Scotia team will be comprised
of Gary Smith, Tom Banks and
John Archibald, with Les Smith
as alternate.
In other divisional play,
Sandy Herrick of Paragon
took top honours in the super senior category, besting
hometown golfer Charlie Costin of Greenwood. In division
two, John Brown of Riverside
Golf Club, near Saint John,
took top honours, followed by
McDonell of Oakfield. In the
third division, Curtis Duggan
of Amherst bested Herrick
by three strokes. And, in the
fourth division, Frank Cotton
of Eden bested Dale Jenkins
and Ed Brown of Glen Lovat
and Eagle Crest.
McMullen, Banks capture
senior men’s four ball title
Lorne McMullen and Erwin Banks shot a sizzling
hot 66 August 16, the lowest
round of the day, to claim
the 28th NSGA Senior Men’s
Four Ball Championship.
McMullen, a member at Eden
Golf and Country Club, and
Banks, a member at Paragon,
had six birdies in total: two on
the front nine and four on the
back; their only blemish being a
bogey on the par four eleventh.
Entering the day three shots
behind leaders Gary and Les
Smith, McMullen and Banks
needed to have a strong round.
They came through, winning by
two strokes over the brothers
from Paragon.
Finishing in second were the
Smiths, who shot an even par
71 to finish two strokes back.
The Smiths were plus one on the
front nine, but rebounded with
three birdies and two bogeys on
the back. The brothers also won
the first division gross.

Tami Parks, left, and Kevin
O’Keefe, of Aylesford,
were part of a medalsweeping individual and
team badminton contingent at the World Masters
Games in Italy earlier this
month.

O’Keefe, Parks win seven medals
at World Master Games
Two Aylesford badminton
players returned from Torino,
Italy with seven medals between them from the World
Masters Games, August 2
to 12.
The World Masters Games
is the largest sporting event
for athletes over the age of
35. More than 19,000 athletes from around the world
competed in more than 30
different sporting events,
from archery to volleyball. It
is held every four years, and
the format is similar to the
Olympics.
Tami Parks, a dentist in
Greenwood, competed in 40+
Women’s Doubles with Petya
Georgieva from Bulgaria, a
former World Masters champion. Together, they defeated
athletes from Russia, Spain,
Greece and Canada, losing
only in the final to an elite
team from Ukraine.
Parks teamed up with
spouse Kevin O’Keefe in the
45+ Mixed Doubles event and
also went undefeated until the
finals, where they lost a close
three-game decision to Kim
Calvert and Sherilyn Blight
from New Zealand.
O’Keefe also competed
in both 50+ Men’s Doubles
with Quebec native Robert
Desroches, and in 50+ Mixed
Doubles with Irina Shamakova from Russia. Despite
having never played with
these partners before - and
considerable language barriers, O’Keefe captured both
gold medals in these events.
In team competition, Parks
and O’Keefe joined a strong
group of players from Quebec.
Their team, named “Fleur-
de-lys,” captured the bronze
medal, just one point behind
the American squad, which
took silver. A dominant Russian team captured the gold
medal. Team captain Parks
was thrilled with the level of
performance, despite temperatures between 37 degrees
Celsius and 40 C.
Both Valley athletes were
pleasantly surprised with
their results, as it had been 25
years since they competed at
this level. They attribute their
strong performances to the
considerable support they
received from many people
at home. Parks is grateful to
have worked with Middleton
personal trainer Cathy West
for the last number of years.
“Our original goals were
solely to become more
healthy. It came as a sur-
prise that I have become fit
enough to compete at this
level again,” says Parks.
“The physiotherapy treatment and advice that we
have received has also been
crucial,“ says O’Keefe. “Both
physios, Jessica Ritchie of
Greenwood and Christina
Connolly of Berwick, were instrumental in getting us back
on the court after numerous
small training injuries over the
last year. Lastly, the support
we got from the players and
staff at the gym at 14 Wing
Greenwood was fantastic.”
The couple plans on taking
a few weeks off, but looks
forward to playing in many
more tournaments. Their
long-term goal will be to participate in 2017 at the World
Masters Games in Auckland,
New Zealand.
