A WORD FROM A BOARD MEMBER: BRUCE DALZIEL
“As we celebrate our 45th anniversary in 2015, Peters Valley looks back in pride, and forward with
excitement, about connecting people to fine crafts and helping them to grow as artists. While the
world has changed in many ways, this is as vital today as it was at our founding in 1970.
OUR MISSION
Each year comes with unique challenges and achievements.
After six seasons of leading Peters Valley I am more excited
than ever before by our programs, our artists, our dedicated
Board and Staff and our ever growing forward momentum.
Peters Valley is getting stronger every year and fulfilling our
mission in innovative ways, enriching lives through the art of
fine craft as we have since 1970. 2014 was an amazing year of
growth for our organization and further proof of our place in
the national movement of fine craft.
In the past year alone our membership has risen 200%, reflecting the excitement we ignite in
people of all backgrounds about fine crafts. Our workshops, gallery exhibits, craft fair, annual
auction, Bevans Day, and other programs bring people to the Delaware Water Gap to learn,
explore, and connect with fellow artists and collectors.
We want Peters Valley to remain culturally significant, inclusive, and sustainable for the next
half century. We have made great strides over the last five years to position Peters Valley for this
future and are ready to press ahead. We embrace the opportunity to provide the field of fine craft
with resources, education and leadership through our staff, visiting artists, students, and alumni.
To our old friends, the board and staff thank you. To our new friends, the board and staff hope
you will join us in making things by hand and supporting Peters Valley.”

Since leaving after a summer spent running
the weaving studio, Fiber Artist Diedrick
Brackens has gone on to complete his MFA
in Textiles for California College of Arts
and is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor
of Fibers at the University of Oregon.
WHAT WE DO
THE CRAFT SCHOOL INITIATIVE
Peters Valley is a nationally recognized center for fine craft nestled amid the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area in Layton, NJ with a
primary focus on Immersion Learning Workshops in eight major studios: blacksmithing, ceramics, fibers/surface design, fine metals, photography,
weaving, woodworking, & special topics/glass. Established in 1970, we continue to be a thought leader in the field of fine craft.
FINE CRAFT
YOUTH ART PROGRAM
Peters Valley was one of five premier craft schools in the nation
to collectively launch a campaign to increase awareness and
enrollment in our programs. International attention was raised with
the successful presentation of the ‘Craft School Experience’ at the
SOFA Expo in Chicago, which included a special exhibition of fine
craft, a panel discussion with artists and the directors of each of the
five schools, and the launch of the web portal www.craftschools.us.

Stuart Kestenbaum of Haystack Mountain School of Crafts (ME),
Gene McLoughlin of Penland School of Craft (NC), Bill May of
Arrowmount School of Art & Craft (TN) and Jim Baker, not
pictured here, of Pilchuck School of Glass (WA). The initiative
is being lead by Ennis Carter of Social Impact Studios (PA).
SPECIAL EVENTS
CONSIDERING THE KYLIX
Each year nationally recognized artists from around
the world come to teach and share their knowledge.
Our youth art program, serving ages 8-17 with hands on activities, expanded into the
fall with sessions including Beginning Blackmithing, Stop Animation, Art and Nature,
and Creative Photography.
PARK PARTNERSHIP
THE PLACE
We are encouraged by our collaboration with the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation
Area to improve the conditions of our historic campus. In addition to working on ways to
highlight the connections between art and nature, we are looking forward to celebrating the
upcoming 50th anniversary of the park with more Art in the Park activities in 2015.
Peters Valley’s serene campus is the perfect
setting for artistic and spiritual renewal,
relaxation and contemplation.
Our Gallery Exhibition ‘Considering the Kylix’ received national attention and traveled from our gallery to additional venues. The Peters Valley
Gallery continues to invite guest curators to mount contemporary craft exhibitions and continues to publish full color catalogs for each to ensure
that their impact goes far beyond the exhibition closing.

FINE CRAFT FAIR
Two major fundraisers were held: The Annual Fine Craft Auction & Dinner Event and
our 44th Annual Fine Craft Fair. Both events had record attendance, involving more
artists and drawing more attendees than ever before.

establish endowed, named scholarship funds with

OUR
In 2014, Peters Valley expanded the Craftsmen At Work public
outreach program, which brings demonstrating artists to schools,
groups and public events. A new division – The Accessible Art
Program (AAP) – was launched in conjunction with Peters Valley
artists and occupational therapy students to bring access to art and
creativity to people with physical, mental and emotional health needs.

Peters Valley ENRICHES LIVES through the learning, practice, and
appreciation of fine crafts.
The making of fine crafts is a kind of EXPLORATION, which relies on
an integration of heart, head, and hands. Peters Valley encourages and
facilitates this exploration in everything we do.
We are a vibrant community, bringing together established and
emerging artists from around the globe. COMING TOGETHER to
make things makes us better artists, able to learn from each other,
and to evaluate our own efforts in a wider context.
We provide studio-based educational workshops for life-long learners
who have the opportunity to benefit from working with nationally and
internationally RECOGNIZED ARTISTS.
We are stewards of the CREATIVE PROCESS: from preparation, to
incubation, to illumination, to verification. We strive to develop the
creative abilities of all of our participants through this focus on process.
We provide an inspiring natural setting, intensive instruction, the right
tools, and a supportive environment to immerse oneself in making
things by hand. Fresh air and respite from one’s normal routine can
bring FRESH INSIGHTS, and for some, perhaps, opportunities for
peak moments, magic, and transformation.

Our gallery shows, craft fairs, annual auctions, presentations at
various festivals, community outreach efforts, and other programs
allow us to both bring fine crafts to a wider audience, and to help
SHAPE FUTURE STANDARDS of excellence in fine crafts.

new techniques and materials, in pursuit of artistic, professional, and
personal GROWTH. This is our focus and joy.
