Dear colleagues, S eventy five years of the work of a higher education institution is always an important jubilee. The Faculty of Economics was founded on 31 March 1937, as the Higher School of Economics and Commerce, in the environment without a long tradition in economic science. After the Second World War the Faculty became a part of the University of Belgrade. The Faculty passed a long way to the modern Faculty which relies on all contemporary achievements in its teaching and scientific process. Since its founding, the Faculty has been an important educational and scientific institution with the clearly defined aims and objectives, including specifically the higher education of economists at the Bachelor level for various specialties and, over time, the education of Masters and Doctors of Science in Economics, Business Management and Statistics. During 75 years of its history the Faculty of Economics has been actively improving the system of study at all levels, following modern international trends in creating highly qualified experts in the field of economics. The Faculty is known nationally for the quality of its research, with postgraduate education (master and doctoral studies) making its central part. In the academic year 2006/07, in accordance with higher education reforms in Serbia, the Faculty of Economics reorganized the postgraduate studies in order to provide one-year-long (60 ECTS) Master studies, in accordance to the European credit transfer system. Today, the Faculty offers 12 study programs fully accredited including several international Master programs jointly organized with foreign universities. The Faculty of Economics has a long tradition in educating Doctors of Science in Economics, Management and Statistics. In the academic year 2008/09, the Faculty started with the Doctoral Studies, which last three years (180 ECTS points). Today the Faculty provides three fully accredited PhD programs in Economics, Business Management and Statistics. The Faculty of Economics is especially proud of its intensive international cooperation, which has been maintained over the past 75 years. This is also reflected in intensive cooperation in the organization of joint studies with foreign higher education institutions, as well as in the scientific work. The Faculty of Economics has proved that a difference is made by people. With 140 full-time teachers and associates, as well as numerous programs of study offered at its postgraduate studies, the Faculty of Economics is one of the largest faculties within the University of Belgrade. At the same time, it represents a significant medium-sized university in itself. Naturally, apart from successful teachers and associates, the Faculty of Economics in Belgrade also has successful students. Since its foundation, about 2885 have continued their studies successfully advancing to the MSc degree and more than 740 obtained their PhD degree. 1 PAST AND PRESENT OUR TRADITION IN POSTGRADUATES - A SHORT HISTORY OF THE FACULTY OF ECONOMICS RELATED TO POSTGRADUATE STUDIES PAST AND PRESENT Year 1937 Higher School of Economics and Commerce (HSEC) founded in Belgrade 1939 HSEC was authorized to award PhD Degrees 1941 First PhD thesis defended at HSEC War: suspension of teaching activities due to the occupation of the country 1947 HSEC transformed into the Faculty of Economics becoming a part of the University of Belgrade 1952 First PhD thesis defended at the Faculty Institute for Economic Research founded within the Faculty Faculty moved to the new building (present premises) 1955 First issue of the journal Ekonomski anali (Economic Annals) published 1956 First foreign student defended a PhD thesis at the Faculty 1960 Beginning of the MSc Studies (Serbian: Magistratura1) offering five programs: Economic Development, Market and Market Trends, Economics of Enterprises 1, Economics of Enterprises 2 and Operational Research 1961-1962 Construction of three new, modern amphitheatres (A1, A2, A3; total seating capacity: 840) 1962 First MSc thesis defended 1974 Founding of the Centre for Scientific Research of the Faculty of Economics (NICEF) 1980 Founding of the Computer Centre; the first computer (Honeywell-6/43) with 4 terminals acquired 1989 Publishing Centre (CID) founded as a separate operating unit of the Faculty 1 In Serbia until 2006, MSc studies were two-year postgraduate studies called “Magistratura”. 2 PAST AND PRESENT 1990 First TEMPUS project coordinated by the Faculty of Economics 1992 Sanctions imposed by the EU and UN; suspension of international projects and cooperation 1994 One-year Specialist postgraduate programs introduced (in addition to MSc courses) 1995 All teachers’ offices and two lecture rooms equipped with personal computers (PC AT 486) 1996 Internet link established through the academic network of the Belgrade University Electronic Computer Centre 1997 Faculty obtains its domain: www.ekof.bg.ac.yu (from 2010: www.ekof.bg.ac.rs ) 2001 Preparation of new syllabi for all teaching subjects Reintroduction of the students’ survey as part of the evaluation system Founding of the Centre for International Studies and Cooperation 2002 Introduction of the new (the first international) Specialist Postgraduate Programme in Finance New International Master in Management and Economics – in cooperation with the HEC (Hautes études commerciales), Paris 2003 Introduction of distance learning Academic Council adopts the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS); curricula and syllabi adjusted The Faculty hosts the Second International Conference of the Association of South Eastern Europe Economic Universities (ASECU) 2004 The Faculty hosts the Seventh International Conference of the European Association for Comparative Economic Studies (EACES) Economic Annals assessed as the best economic journal in the country (by the international standards) 2005 Opening of a new lecture room with 45 computer units; 25 lecture rooms provided with new video equipment Renovation of the amphitheatres Founding of the Foundation for the Advancement of Economics (FREN) 2006 MSc Programs (Serbian: Magistratura) transformed into one-year Master ones (60 ECTS points); 16 programs in Serbian, 2 in English; a new international Master in Macroeconomics, jointly with University of Nice Sophia Antipolis, in French First elections for the Student Parliament of the Faculty Economic Annals obtain the first International Editorial Board 2007 Accreditation of the Faculty (according to the new standards) as a scientific and research institution Opening of a new video conference hall 2008 New PhD Programs in Economics, Management and Statistics (180 ECTS) introduced; the first generation of doctoral students enrolled Revision of Master Programs: 8 in Serbian, 2 in English and 1 in French 2009 Accreditation of the Faculty (according to the new standards) as a higher education institution in Economics Career Centre for Students established at the Faculty 2010 First MBA course established jointly with Texas A&M University Commerce Reaccredidation of the Faculty as a scientific and research institution 2011 Another journal of the Faculty emerged: Ekonomske ideje i praksa (Economic Ideas and Practices); the first issue published 2012 First generation of MBA students finished their studies 3 OUR MISSION IN POSTGRADUATES Our Mission in postgraduates F or 75 years, the Faculty of Economics of the University of Belgrade has provided top quality teaching and learning at postgraduate level, based on the needs of both of its students and Serbian economy and society. At the Faculty of Economics you can study for a Master in the fields of economics, banking and finance, international economics, accounting, management, marketing, statistics and quantitative economics. You can obtain PhD in Economics, Business Management and Statistics. The Faculty’s postgraduate curriculum and syllabi are constantly being updated. The European Credit Transfer System is applied to all postgraduate programs provided at the Faculty according to the Bologna process. 6 The Faculty provides programs which are designed to include practical perspectives and skills with case study orientation. The goal is to teach students how to think about current economic and political issues in order to apply knowledge to many problems. The Faculty provides students with recognized degrees that grant them access to various carrier opportunities. Postgraduate Studies The Faculty’s postgraduate courses are long established and successful, strongly supported by our research work and links with industry. The Faculty of Economics has been organizing postgraduate courses since the early 1960s. Until 2006, these were two-year postgraduate studies, whereas the doctoral studies until 2008 were organized in the form of a doctoral thesis. Since 2006, i.e. 2008 respectively, the Faculty of Economics has switched to master, i.e. doctoral studies, fully in compliance with the European standards of postgraduate studies. COURSE OVERVIEW Master Programs Following the adoption of the Law on Higher Education in 2005, under which this form of study was introduced, the first generation of students in the master studies of the Faculty of Economics enrolled in the school year 2006/07. As the studies have been formed, to follow all trends of scientific development as well as the development of teaching process, the study programs underwent certain adjustments and were reformed for school year 2008/09. Pursuant to the decision of the Commission of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Serbia, all master programs at the Faculty of Economics have been accredited. Master academic studies have been fully adjusted to the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) and comply in all respects with the accreditation requirements and standards for this level of study (student workload, curriculum structure, aims and objectives of the study programs, student competencies acquired under the programs). The master academic studies at the Faculty of Economics have 60 ECTS credits and last one year. The study programs offer all necessary knowledge and academic skills required by professionals of different profiles at the level of master academic studies. The study programs of master academic studies have been adjusted to the programs of foreign higher education institutions. The adjustment refers to: the curriculum and its content, aim and outcome of the course; student competencies acquired under the program; jobs that can be done by masters; enrollment requirements for study programs and perspectives of further education at the doctoral level. The Faculty of Economics was among the first higher education institutions in Serbia to organize joint master programs in cooperation with prestigious foreign higher education institutions. Today, there are two international joint master programs under which teaching is conducted according to the study programs which, apart from accreditation in Serbia, also have foreign accreditation. Upon completion of these programs, students will acquire two diplomas: the diploma of the Faculty of Economics in Belgrade and the diploma of another – foreign institution. Entry Reqirments for Master Studies The Faculty welcomes application from all those interested in furthering their education. The master studies are available for candidates who have completed a fouryear bachelor academic program – BSc diploma of minimum 240 ECTS in relevant fields, not necessarily in economics or management (most subjects are acceptable), after testing their knowledge relevant to the study program. More detailed requirements (the entrance exam information) can be found on the Faculty’s web page www.ekof.bg.ac.rs. 7 COURSE OVERVIEW Structure, Objectives and Aims of the Master Studies The master studies at the Faculty of Economics represent the second-degree education of academic masters in economics and masters in management for the specific fields. The master studies at the 8 Faculty of Economics provide 60 ECTS credits, after a student has acquired 240 ECTS credits at bachelor level. The study program subjects provide 45 ECTS credits, while the final master paper counts as 15 ECTS credits. A course content is relevant to future careers. Our courses are designed to be very flexible. The program structure fully follows the contemporary trends in the teaching process, thus ensuring an appropriate degree of electiveness. At the same time, the methods used in the teaching process are modern (the inclusion of students, encouragement of critical thinking, solving concrete problem – case study method and the like) and ensure the acquisition of appropriate competencies and academic skills in accordance with the study program and module. Students acquire general and coursespecific knowledge, as well as necessary academic skills (analytical, numeracy, information and communication). Masters acquire appropriate competencies and qualifications for performing complex jobs at different levels of decision making in firms, banks, government, central bank and the like. At the same time, masters provide knowledge needed for further education at the doctoral level. The basic aim of all master programs is to educate appropriate professionals in a specified field at the master level, thus making them qualified for complex and managerial jobs in the economy, as well as for the inclusion in scientific research. We aim for postgraduates with an understading and ability to apply knowledge. Therefore, our courses are «applied» with a strong vocational emphasis. The program enables the acquisition of knowledge and mastery of skills required for the performance of very complex managerial and analytical jobs in different fields. (More information about the structure, objectives and aims of each master course can be found on the Faculty website: www.ekof.bg.ac.rs). COURSE OVERVIEW The master program “Macroeconomics of Transition Economies” has given me opportunity to study on recognized French state university, without leaving my job in Belgrade. Studying on French and being able to pursue my studies abroad was precious experience. Professors and knowledge that they gave me really have broadened my perspectives and work possibilities. Hristina Bajić, Raiffeisen Bank, Serbia Competencies of Graduate Students The diploma and qualifications, which are gained upon completion of any study program of master academic studies, correspond to the character, content and aims of each program. The competencies acquired by students attending any study program of master academic studies are specifically linked to each scientific field covered by the program or, more exactly, program modules. All study programs of master academic studies offered by the Faculty of Economics supplement students’ knowledge acquired during their bachelor studies with a view to preparing them for further scientific research (at the doctoral level), or enabling them to apply acquired knowledge to solving concrete problems. Students acquire knowledge and academic skills that enable them to solve complex problems in an economic environment at the level of economic entities (firms, banks, financial institutions), government and its bodies (ministries, agencies, central bank), development institutions and international organizations (depending on the study program). At the same time, students acquire the qualifications for further scientific research in the field covered by the study program, both for the formulation and assessment of simpler theoretical models, as well as for their application to real economic problems. Students are also trained to present their opinions, ideas and conclusions to a broader academic and professional public in a clear and unambigous way. At the same time, they are trained to convey their knowledge in the field of economics or management and business in the vocational training process (economics courses in secondary schools). Specifiic competencies are given for each study program (on the Faculty website: www.ekof.bg.ac.rs). After graduating from the Faculty of Electric Engineering in Belgrade and five years of active work in the country and abroad, I have found that without adequate academic knowledge there would be much fewer opportunities for me to successfully conduct and manage business activities. In that sense, the program “Business Economics and Management” has fully met my expectations and it offers a fantastic theory basis which, combined with practical experience, helps in mastering skills required from a manager.
