Free Motion Machine Quilting Workshop with Rob Appell
Spend a Day with Machine Quilting Mad Man, Rob Appell and learn from some of his
basic techniques. Rob has a back ground in sewing machine repair, so he offers some
technical information about how the machine is designed to work, and the way we can
benefit as quilters by understanding the set up of the different machines.
The class will begin with a lecture on machine designs, what makes for a great machine
for free motion quilting. Rob will also help students to understand their own equipment,
such as their machines, needles, thread, and all the little gadgets so that they can apply
their knowledge when they return home. The Lecture will also address body mechanics,
physical techniques and practice drills for quick improvement.
The rest of the day will be spent helping the students put what they have learned into
physical practice, thatʼs right, the students become the teachers and make machine
quilting magic.

DO NOT bring your best quilt top to class, this workshop is to help prepare you for your
best quilting. (however you may work on other class projects durning the quilting time if
you feel ready)
- Your Sewing Machine, in good working order with a FREE MOTION QUILTING FOOT.
- Sew Steady (plastic extension table) if you have one
- Sew Slip Mat* Teflon glide mat for machine bed.
- 2 yards of muslin
- Baby size Batting, Hobbs Heirloom (80/20) Batting is Robʼs Favorite, maybe even

bring a variety of batting styles if you like.
- Half Yard or large floral print (ok, it can be non-floral, but you will be tracing the print)
- Cotton 40 wt thread
- Polyneon, Rayon, and/or Polyester 40wt Thread that is a contrast to the print so you
can see your work.
- Curved Safety Pins for basting - no sprays for class please
- Machingers Gloves*
- Sharps and Denim Needles sizes 80 & 90.
