WINTER ADVENTURES 2. JANUARY - 31. MARCH 2016 IN HAMN I SENJA The following adventures are available for both groups and individual travellers during the mentioned period. Due to weather conditions, the program maybe changed to fit the weather, and alternative activities will be offered if possible. Additional group activities can be offered, such as lavvu-camp, fishing tours, top tours/summit to sea, other guided tours to look for the northern lights, photo tours. The Lighthouse is heated. A very nice place to relax and enjoy the ever changing Arctic light and landscape. The Lighthouse package – available every evening: Hot drinks are available inside, and also reindeer skin to use as seating outdoor. These wolves are just like other wolves, except from one thing. They don't fear humans, and enjoy our company as a part of their natural environment. This is a unique opportunity to meet the wolves in Polar Park inside the enclosure – min. age 18 years. Visit the fox camp inside the fence is included in the entrance ticket, and is allowed also for children. Wearing a floatation suit, the temperature and the weather is completely indifferent. You float easily in the water – like a cork. A real kick, not physically demanding, and the stream is not dangerous. Everybody set their own limits for what they like to do. Easy walk up to the dam built for the first water powered electricity production in the world (150 m.a.s.l.) Great view over the fjord and majestic mountains. Hiking with snowshoes when there is snow. Rent a reindeer skin for outdoor seating when relaxing by the fire. Walk to the former nickel mine area Take a walk and see the remains of the old nickel mine only 15 min. walk from Hamn. Guide must be ordered in advance Hiking in the Hamn landscape Borrow a map from the reception and take a hike in the mountains in Hamn. If snow - rent snowshoes and poles, backpack, thermos, warm clothes etc. Sauna Relax after a day full of outdoor activity. Other periods: Book latest 1 hour in advance. Polar Park Kiss a wolf in the Northernmost wildlife park in the world. Min. age 18 years. Watch arctic wild animals, and visit the fox camp. No min. age. Driving time from Hamn I Senja 2 h 15 min. Visit them on the way to or from Hamn in Senja! Visit Tromsø Hurtigruten departures from Finnsnes city every day at 1145 heading for Tromsø city. Scenic tour. Arrival in Tromsø 1430. Driving time from Hamn to Finnsnes 50 min. Return with speed ferry same day or bring your rental car on board and drive back, 3 hours drive from Tromsø to Hamn i Senja. Photographing and sightseeing If hiring a car, you can experience all of Norway´s nature within a few hours drive, including one of the beautiful National Tourist Routes along road 86/862. You will never run out of motifs or exciting sceneries. Sightseeing tours can be arranged for groups on request. SENJA SPECIAL JANUARY 2016 WHALE WATCHING WINTER WHALE SAFARI FROM HAMN I SENJA IN JANUARY* The last years, from the end of December to the middle of February, the ocean outside Senja is filled with herring. The herring packed sea attracts the largest animals on earth to gigantic dinner parties. WHALESAFARI INCLUDED Boat with skipper, floating suit TIME Winter season-departures: January, or as long as the whales are in the area. The Atlantic Ocean outside the coast of Senja, is one of the richest fishing grounds in the world, and hundreds of killer whales and humpback whales join in for tasty meals during this period. Getting this close up to the whales, when they swim under the boat, jumps out of the sea and even lie still and just look at you - you can be nothing but impressed by the size, and the elegant moves. Sometimes they are so close you can even feel their breath. Other whale species can also be seen: Minke Whale, Harbour Porpoise and Pilot Whales. Fixed departures. Even though the whales seems to come every day in this period, there is no 100% guarantee of their participation. But what a magic chance to be a real explorer and have an adventure for life! Tours might be cancelled on days with bad weather and for safety reasons. Fixed whale tour departures as long as the whales are seen in the area. When the whales are gone, we continue with wildlife safari in the fjord to look for other Arctic animals like sea eagles, seals and more. Photo: www.andershanssen.com ARCTIC travel memories WINTER CLOTHING FOR A SENJA VISIT The Senja island is situated on 69,4°North, and for those who join us in Hamn in Senja in the winter time, we recommend some basic equipment in addition to clothing you can get from us. During winter, the average temperature along the coast of Senja is around minus 3-4°C (around 26 F). Occasionally we experience down to between minus 15-20 degrees, and in combination with wind the effective temperature can be quite low. The weather in Northern Norway changes rapidly, and local variations can be huge. In other words – we have to be prepared for a lot of weather. The polar nights, when the sun never rises, lasts from 22nd of November to the 22nd of January. March and April can also come with warm and sunny days, and sun glasses and sunscreen is recommended.
