Golf Poem In my hand I hold a ball, White and dimpled and rather small, Oh, how bland it does appear, This harmless looking little sphere. By its size I could not guess, The awesome strength it does possess, But since I fell beneath its spell, I’ve wandered through the fires of hell. My life has not been quite the same, Since I chose to play this stupid game, It rules my mind for hours on end, A fortune it has made me spend. It has made me curse and made me cry, And hate myself and want to die, It promises me a thing called par, If I hit this ball straight and far. To master such a tiny ball, Should not be very hard at all, But my desires, the ball refuses, And does exactly as it chooses. It hooks and slices, dribbles and dies, And disappears before my eyes, Often it will have a whim, To hit a tree or take a swim. With miles of grass on which to land, It finds a tiny patch of sand, Then has me offering up my soul, If only it would find the hole. It’s made me whimper like a pup, And swear that I will give it up, And take to drink to ease my sorrow, But the ball knows….I’ll be back tomorrow. Stand proud you noble swingers of clubs and losers of balls! A recent study found that the average golfer walks about 900 miles per year. Another study found that the average golfer drinks, on average 22 gallons of alcohol per year. This means that, on average, golfers get about 41 miles to the gallon!! We have a few requirements that we ask groups to consider when borrowing this equipment. Equipment must be signed out by the person who will be responsible for it and signed back in when finished with. Equipment must not be swapped between groups. It is to be returned to Council where it can then be signed out to the next group. Please return equipment when you have finished with it to allow other groups the opportunity to use this equipment. Please consider these points when borrowing equipment. It allows for fairness for all those using the equipment, it allows Council to keep track of where the equipment is and it also allows Council to inspect for any damage in case replacement of equipment is required. Thanks to Gwen Hennessy for sharing this story. Quilpie Magpies WELL….What a season….What a Grand Final!!! How proud are we of the boys? The first Grand Final win in 29 years and they deserved every bit of it!! If you weren’t at the game in Charleville on Saturday afternoon, you missed a great show. The Quilpie Magpies fought hard and led on the score board for the entire game, never once giving up. Congratulations to the boys in black and white….you did a great job and made Quilpie a very happy little town!! And let’s not forget the off field heroes…. “Super Coach” Brendo who put his time and effort into training the boys throughout the year, kept them motivated, stuck behind them 100% and kept the club happy. “Boss Lady” Sally Challenor kept the club running, the buses booked, the paperwork done, the money coming in, the events organized…the list goes on and on. Treasurer Bruce Paulsen paid the bills, ran the sideline, made the announcements and referreed. Chris Seng who did fitness training with the boys and Donna Waldron did the first aid. The sponsors, the helpers and the supporters. Quilpie Rugby League Just a little bit of history from Quilpie…. As written by Gwen Hennessy. It’s also a time where local community groups/ clubs can earn some extra dollars to go towards their organization. The feedback I’ve had from this year’s street party was great with a few more activities adding to the fun of the night. Cathy Drummond joined us again this year and what a performer she is. Benno Bowen as MC kept the crowd entertained, so a big thanks goes out to him for a job well done and the wool bale rolling (with one participant doing it in his jocks), was once again very popular….and I’m not even going to mention the nudey run A great feed was put on by the Quilpie State College and there was no shortage of food with the CWA doing their ever popular potatoes and hot dogs, Kindy had popcorn, the B & S had the best cupcakes in Quilpie, the Crushers had the yummiest desserts and the Show Society did ice creams. The Jumping Castles were a hit with the kids as were the temporary tattoos sprayed on by Sierra as a fundraiser for the B & S. The B & S also had its annual can bar to keep the crowd well watered and right next door was the newly constructed horse racing competition run by the Quilpie Magpies Rugby League Club. This was a new activity and it really got the crowd involved. Thanks to Brendo and the boys for getting on board with this event. Kate’s mini dancers were a hit…and how cute are they!!! And our local boys in blue brought along their Blue Light Trailer…another hit with the kids…so thanks to Brendan and Mark for getting involved. So, a big thanks goes to everyone involved on the night and thanks must also go out to Toni and the garden crew who did a great job setting up, pulling down and cleaning up.
