Renegade Bass Q1 Newboro Lake
June 28th, 2014
Newboro (Rideau Lakes) Ontario-June 28th, 2014: The first Renegade Bass
qualifier for 2014 took place out of Newboro Lake. Anglers also had access to
Benson, Mosquito, Clear and Indian Lakes, which are all part of the Newboro
System.
Prefish reports varied. Many who prefished the weekend before reported mostly
promising results whereas there were reports that those who prefished during
the days leading up to the event found the bite tough. Some teams attributed the
mostly tough bite to the many days of bluebird skies leading up to the event.
On the morning of the event, conditions were sunny and winds were minimal.
Throughout the afternoon, the winds picked up a bit and the sky was cloudy at
times. Surface water temperatures varied from around 77°F up into the low 80s.
Teams spread out through the chain of lakes, with many fishing Newboro and Indian
Lakes for a good part of the day.
Back at the weigh-in site at the end of the day, most teams reported that the bite
was tough over the course of the event.
The weigh-in occured at the Newboro Locks. This time, the teams that dominated
the top positions were from Southern Ontario. The winners, being the team of Dave
Chong and Doug Brownridge managed to weigh in a total of 18.09 pounds, being
roughly a half pound more than the past victors did the last time Renegade Bass
held a tournament there back in 2010. Their victory entitled them to the top prize of
5000$.
In a post-event interview, Dave Chong mentioned that they caught their fish using
topwaters and jigs. Their bag consisted mostly of smallmouth bass.
In close second came the team of Pete Bartonek and Craig Sevink with a total of
17.95 pounds, earning them not only a cheque for $2000, but also the Rhodes
and Williams Appreciation Award worth $250. The team also picked up $500 from
Ranger Boats through the Ranger Cup program.
Rounding out the top three was the veteran team of Mike Desforges and Jay
McCormack with a weight of 16.54 pounds, earning them not only a check for
$1000, but also two Shimano Cumara rods as they had signed up for the Shimano
Platinum Anglers program.
The Lowrance/Navionics Award was handed out to Terry Holder and John Lamour
through a random draw. They each received a Navionics Platinum Plus chip.
Even though many found the conditions difficult, all three of the fish that qualified
for the big fish prizes still managed to be in the four pound range. The team of
Lenny Devos and Jeff Desloges took top honors with a 4.39 pound largemouth,
earning them a cheque for $550. Consequently, they currently lead the Yokohama
Biggest Bass Of The Year Race presented by Goldwing Auto Care. Second Big Fish
honours belonged to the team of John Ebbers and Mike Vanderberg. Their 4.26
pound bass earned them $330. Tom Reid and Bryan Pollock received the $220
Third Big Fish Prize as they brought a 4.24 pound lunker to the scales.
In other news, the team of Barry Clayton and Steven Neveu are currently leading
the Rookie Of The Year race following this event with a weight of 11.48 pounds.
In close second is the team of Jon Munro and Bob Phillips who weighed in 11.08
pounds.
With the Team Of The Year race now in full swing, all eyes will now be on Qualifier
Number Two which will occur this Saturday, July 12th out of the Town of Carleton
Place on Mississippi Lake.
