Program Progress/Enrollment Reports
Current enrollment for Medical Coding Specialist is 7, a drop from 11 at the beginning of
the semester. Discussion was had regarding student perceptions of medical coding and
HIT professions. We also discussed the need for highlighting the HIT profession and
MATC’s programs to high school and middle school students.
Explanation of the one-plus-one program offered at MATC where students can earn a
Technical Diploma and take their CPC and/or CCA exam, and begin working in the field.
The student then has the opportunity to complete a second year and earn an Associate
Degree in HIT and earn their RHIT credential. The consensus was that the RHIT was the
preferred credential for facility-based HIM Department functions.
Student Outcome Assessment (SOA) and Quality Review Process (QRP) was discussed as
the tool MATC uses to measure program outcomes. Program review is due April s,
2014. WTCS program measures Technical Skill Attainment (TSA) for HIT programs
identifying common core program outcomes for all programs. TSA review is in
2014/2015.
Deb Lewis asked if students are required to shadow an HIT professional before being
admitted to the program. Currently the program has an orientation with presentations
to the AHIMA Career Map website, as well as, the AAPC’s website as an introduction to
the profession prior to registering, but having students shadow will be considered.
A suggestion was made to have an advisory committee member(s) attend the
orientation and speak with students to answer questions. Another suggestion was made
to give out contact information so that students can speak with an HIT professional.
Debra Bryant volunteered to share her contact information and answer students’
questions.
Sheri made a suggestion to utilize Adobe Connect to speak with students during an
orientation or just for presentation purposes in the classroom.
