Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse Tours
Marvel Mother Nature’s beauty and power as you tour
Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse. With only 59 steps, it is
Australia’s most accessible lighthouse. Wind your way to
the top of the tower, unveiling breathtaking views across the
Indian Ocean and the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park.
From the balcony, try spotting whales and their young
frolicking in the waters below during the annual migratory
period, from September to December.
Friendly tour guides will provide you with a fascinating
insight into the functions of the working lighthouse.
Take a step back in time as you hear
tales of ships wrecked off the
formidable coastline, the hardships of
life as a lighthouse keeper, and
resident ghosts, Harry and Mary, that
will be sure to send a tingle down
your spine! Finish your visit with
refreshments on the panoramic deck,
or by the fireplace, in the lovingly
restored lighthouse keeper’s cottage.

Plants and Animals of Cape Naturaliste
Birds
Birds are the most noticeable and colourful residents of Cape
Naturaliste, particularly in early morning and late afternoon, when
the small heath land birds are the most vocal. Spendid Redwinged Wrens, Scarlet, White-breasted and Yellow Robins, New
Holland Honeyeaters and Spinebills are easily identified. Parrots,
such as 28s, Western Rosellas and Long-billed and Red-tailed
Cockatoos, are colourful additions to the landscape. Splendid
Fairy-wrens are very common around the Cape Naturaliste
Lighthouse area and dazzle with their brilliant blue colour.
Birds of prey, to look out for along the cliffs, include Ospreys, the
small Nankeen Kestrel, Hobbies and Brown Falcons. Many birds
inhabit the shoreline and beaches, such as Cormorants,
Oystercatchers, Reef Herons, and Red-capped Plovers, as well as
the endangered Hooded Plovers. Sugarloaf Rock is the only site in
mainland Australia where the Red-tailed Tropicbirds can be seen
reliably from the coast (September to May).
Flora
The wild landscape of Cape Naturaliste contains well in excess of
600 species of plants including eight species of rare and
threatened flora. Dominant tree species found on the Cape are
Jarrah, Marri, Peppermint and Banksia. Declared rare flora in the
Cape area include the Cape Spider Orchid, Dunsborough Spider
Orchid and the Meelup Mallee. Studies show the Meelup Mallee is
possibly as old as 6660 years, meaning it is potentially one of the
oldest Eucalypts on record.
Dense coastal heath dominates the windswept, western slopes of
Cape Naturaliste. Pink Pimelea, Yellow Buttercups and Wattles,
Blue Fan-flower and Red Cockies’ Tongues are just a few of the
common flowers of the heath of the land. Many of the native
plants on the coastline contain oil glands, which give each species
a unique aroma. The Winged Boronia, Coastal Daisy-bush and
Lemon-scented Myrtle create just a few of the scents wafting on
the breeze on the Cape.
Fauna
Dugites and Tiger Snakes are not uncommon on the walking tracks
around Cape Naturaliste in warmer months and should be given a
wide berth. The non-venomous Carpet Python, however,
recognised by its broad head and beautiful mottled markings,
is a rare treat for walkers. Bobtail Lizards and the large Southern
Heath Monitor are both residents of Cape Naturaliste, along with
the shiny black King’s Skinks and Western Bearded Dragons.
Marine Life
Whale watching is very popular, particularly from the top balcony of
Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse. Each winter, beginning late April to early
May, Australian Humpbacks leave Antarctica to migrate northwards to
their tropical calving grounds along the west and east coasts of
Australia. Around August, they begin travelling south to their feeding
grounds in the polar waters of the Antarctic, so the first whales can
been seen passing by Cape Naturaliste from early Spring.
Blue Whales, the largest of all living animals, can often be seen off
the Cape Naturaliste coast at these times. They can grow to a length
of over 30 metres and weigh up to 180 tonnes. They are usually
bluish-grey with a paler underside, and when fully submerged,
appear a remarkable luminous blue or aqua.
The Humpback Whale is the fifth largest of the great whales with
adult females growing to 19 metres and weighing up to 40
tonnes. They are generally blackish with white underbelly and
sides. The humpback whale has been protected from whaling in
the southern hemisphere since 1963, with the populations in
Western Australia now around 15,000.
Australian Sea Lions visit Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse waters and
coastline to fish. New Zealand Fur Seals only reappeared near
Augusta during the last 20 years after being decimated by sealers,
during the last century. Numbers are increasing with a new
colony of about 30 fur seals recently established on a rocky island
between Cape Naturaliste and Bunker Bay.
