Bouda is a nationally known photographer and author.
Bouda chose freedom in 1981 by escaping former
Czechoslovakia and ultimately becoming a United
States citizen. After living in Georgia and Utah, Bret
decided to relocate his wife and children to Kalispell,
Montana, to be only a few minutes away from Glacier
National Park. Throughout his life, Bret has been an
enthusiastic photographer, particularly interested in
capturing nature in the most intimate and dramatic
settings.
The frame for this exquisite full-color 16” x 20”
photograph was donated by Greg Smith at Frame It.
Frame It is located in Suite #135 in the basement level
of the KM Building (50 Second Street East, Kalispell).
The Hockaday wishes to thank Bret Bouda and Greg
Smith for making this raffle possible.

This year has sped by and
the holidays are quickly
approaching. All of the
activities are beginning
to wind down and we
are thankful for all the
volunteers who help us all
year long. There are so many
folks who donate their time
and they are unfortunately
too many to list. Please
know that we appreciate
each and everyone of you!
Sponsors recognition for the Artists in the Garden Event:
Tedrowe & Jill Watkins, Robert & Nancy Westberg, Gardner
Auction Services, Cocinando, Hilton Garden Inn, DA
Davidson, Lucy Smith, Roger Sullivan, Peg Allison, Greg &
Laura Ennis, Nancy Dunlop Cawdrey, and Janet Sullivan.
The Artists in the Garden fundraising event at the Hilton
Garden Inn was a wonderful combination of art, good
food and dancing with music by Cocinando. Proceeds
for the evening totaled $16,390. Thanks go out to the
participating artists, our generous sponsors, Mark
Holston who acted as our Master of Ceremonies and to
Davar Gardner of Gardner Auction Services who did a
stellar job getting the art sold. The success of the many
events we do is so important to help offset the Museum’s
operating costs which exceed $30,000 per month.
I would like to invite everyone to attend the annual
Christmas Gift Fair at the Museum December 3rd & 4th. The
Hockaday’s galleries will feature local artists presenting a
range of unique items that make exceptional handmade
gifts. Join the many folks who visit the museum for this
fun event! Christmas Fair hours: 3-9 Friday, 10-3 Saturday.
The Museum will be closed December 24 - January 3 and
reopen regular hours on January 4.
The Hockaday has recently evaluated its permanent
collection to identify candidates for deaccessioning. The
items selected for deaccessioning have been approved
by the Permanent Collection Committee and Board of
Directors. Complete information and public notice of the
individual items to be deaccessed can be found on the
website.
Be happy, safe and have a warm Holiday Season!

Upcoming Exhibitions & Events
January 2011
The Hockaday will present four exciting exhibitions
opening on January 13, 2011, reception 5-7pm. A new
series of informal talks begin with the 2011 exhibition
schedule called “Conversations with the Artists”. The
talks are free to Hockaday members and $10 for nonmembers. Please join us on January 13 prior to the

Wayne Hammer
Metalsmith
January 6 - March 17, 2011
Metal is largely a slow moving, painstakingly deliberate
media. Yet, it affords a detailed modeling of scenarios
imagined, conceived and contrived.

Cast Glass
January 6 - March 17, 2011
When one thinks of glass, the images conjured are often
smooth and fragile. Barry’s forms are solid… of the
earth. They come alive with the translucency of texture
and layer upon layer of color.
Josephine Hale, 1878-1961
“The Life and Art of Josephine Hale”
Painter
January 6 – February 26, 2011
What were the signs in that landscape, in the air, in
the motion, in our companionship, that so excited
our imagination and made us so happy? What is that
memory? If we knew what we saw, we could paint it.

Hockaday Museum of Art Education Program
Kathy Martin, Director of Education
Update from Kathy
Docents have had a busy Fall with training sessions,
leading tours, and visits to schools. They enjoyed a visit
from James Clayborn for the November training session.
He answered questions about his artistic process and
Artist-Wilderness Connection experience. We were
thrilled to have some new teachers and schools, such
as Fortine School, visiting the Museum. As part of our
continuing effort to involve all area schools in Hockaday
programs, we have created a slide presentation about
our tours, classes, and other education opportunities to
share with school staff members. There has been a very
positive response to the “Education Connection” visits
and we hope to reach all of our schools in the next few
months.
“Look what I did, Mom!” Chandler and Caleb Currrier
show off their still life paintings.
Open Studio Art Sessions for Teens
Pre-School Art Free to Members
Artist Shelle Lindholm instructs students on the process
of making acrylic skins.
Students created landscape-inspired multi-media
collages during a recent Home School Art Class.
Home School Art Attendance Rises
Painting Pastel with Janet Sullivan
Another new program is our Open Studio Art Sessions
for teens. We provide materials to use and a space for
middle school through high school students to create
art of their own choosing. Guided by a different local
artist as instructor/advisor each session students are
able pursue new artistic avenues.
The number of students participating in classes for
home school increased this fall. Parents are encouraged
to register students before the actual class session
to ensure there is space for their child and that an
appropriate amount of materials are prepared. Current
class sessions for home school and after school students
are listed on the education section of our website.
Pre-school children are encouraged to bring Mom,
Dad, Grandparents, or another responsible adult to
participate in our Tuesday morning art making sessions.
These visits are free to museum members, although a
donation to cover supplies is appreciated.
Students at Janet Sullivan’s pastel workshop in October
learned about under painting and other techniques for
using pastels. If you did not have the chance to take this
workshop, look for another opportunity to study with
Janet in late spring. Other adult classes to sign up for
include Landscape Painting in January, Drawing on the
Loose in February, and Silk Painting in April. Details

about these and other class offerings can be found on
the education pages of the Museum website.
Ardith Scovel and Dawn Weyer work on their pastel
landscapes during the Janet Sullivan Pastel Workshop.
Traveling Medicine Show
From Hungry Horse to Whitefish and Kalispell, the
Traveling Medicine Show was on the road for 9 days this
fall. Blackfeet Indian artists accompanied Museum staff
on several occasions to share their first hand cultural
knowledge and experiences with students of all ages.
Reservations are currently being taken for schools
that would like to participate in this outreach program
during March through June of 2011.

Medicine Show visit.
New Education Trunks
Our new education trunks featuring Native American
Indian art of Montana’s plains and plateau tribes
debuted at the CORE (Flathead Community of
Resource Educators) Trunk workshop during MEA
days. These trunks were created with grants received
from the Woodcock Foundation and the Jerry Metcalf
Foundation. They are available to teachers and schools
for use in their classrooms. To reserve a trunk please
contact Kathy Martin at education@hockadaymuseum.
org or 406-755-5268.
Participants at the CORE Trunk Workshop created tipis
using instructions from one of the new art trunks.
Upcoming Education Events
It is time for elementary aged students to start creating
art for our annual Children’s Art Show. The theme for the
April 2011 exhibit is “Voices of the Wild West”. Students
of member schools and Hockaday students are invited to
participate. Full details and entry form will be available
in January.

Extending the Reach
As the Hockaday’s printing and postage budget tightens,
reaching its membership through electronic means
is becoming the primary and preferred method. Not
just a way of saving our natural resources, electronic
distribution methods are a way of reaching members
quickly and efficiently, as well as providing a means for
those individuals to interact.
The social networking revolution is here and the Hockaday
is a part of it!
